The Alejandro González Iñárritu Nike Commercial Will Brighten Your Day

Weren’t able to make it to the Cannes Film Festival this year to see, among other things, Alejandro González Iñárritu’s latest depressing affair? Good news: Following in the footsteps of David Fincher , the famed director has used his considerable technical talents to create a new World Cup television spot for Nike. Titled “Write the Future,” the three-minute ad feels like noting Iñárritu’s ever done, and not just because it features cameos from Homer Simpson, Kobe Bryant and Gael Garcia Bernal. This thing is infectious, fun, incredibly watchable and manages to coherently say something about how one event can tie the entire world together. In other words, it basically accomplishes everything that Babel didn’t. Check out the clip after the jump and prepare to order yourself a Ronaldo jersey.

‘20,000 Leagues Under The Sea’ Films Being Prepped By Two Studios

David Fincher is in talks with Disney, while ‘Wanted’ helmer Timur Bekmambetov may direct for Fox. By Adam Rosenberg David Fincher Photo: Pascal Le Segretain/ Getty Images Two competing undersea voyages are being prepped for Jules Verne’s “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.” One belongs to Disney, with “The Social Network” director David Fincher in talks to helm and “Bourne Ultimatum” writer Scott Z. Burns pegged to develop the script. Elsewhere in Hollywood, Fox is prepping its own adventure with Captain Nemo and his submarine, the Nautilus; sibling filmmakers Ridley and Tony Scott will produce and Timur Bekmambetov (“Wanted”) is in talks to direct. The classic sci-fi/adventure novel was on the fast track for a McG-directed Disney adaptation until late last year, when the “Terminator Salvation” helmer departed after the project was put on hold indefinitely. The Hollywood Reporter ‘s Heat Vision blog reveals that Fincher approached the studio’s new production head, Sean Bailey, some weeks ago about the project. Fox’s project is further along, as Heat Vision blog also reports that Fincher and Burns have yet to finalize any deals. The Scotts are working with “Clash of the Titans” co-writer Scott Beacham now on developing a script. Bekmambetov isn’t confirmed, but given that Disney doesn’t yet have a script nailed down, Fincher will likely direct another film before he dives down “Under the Sea.” There are no concerns over the rights to adapting “20,000 Leagues” because it’s in the public domain; anyone can work with it. The tone of Disney’s take is unknown, but it is believed that the Fox version would shift from a period setting to a futuristic one. It’s worth noting that this bears a resemblance to another adaptation that Bekmambetov has spoken about, a complete with a supernaturally talented whale and psychic-powered whalers. Another 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea Remake Planned

Since one big-budget remake of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea clearly isn’t enough, here comes another. Because, of course. After it was reported over the weekend that David Fincher was circling an adaptation of the Jules Verne classic for Disney, now comes word that Fox and Scott Free Productions have been planning their own take with help from a script by Clash of the Titans co-writer Travis Beacham (yes, that film did have a script). The studio wants the incredibly busy Timur Bekmambetov to direct, meaning this 20,000 Leagues will get made right around the time the Fincher-led version does: Never. [ THR ]

Soderbergh to Go 3D

If David Fincher can mainstream himself enough to direct a megabudget family tentpole , Steven Soderbergh can shoot his next studio film in 3D. He’ll be doing just that with the star-laden virus thriller Contagion , it was announced today — a fact made more interesting by Soderbergh’s tendency to lens all his movies himself. Of course, he’d hoped to crack that visual frontier first with his musical Cleo , but alas, bedbug crazy campfests with Catherine Zeta-Jones singing Guided by Voices are awfully hard to mount. Fincher Boarding 20,000 Leagues

Upgrade! After trying to mount a big-budget version of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea with McG helming, Disney has now plunked David Fincher in that director’s chair. Coming off the Facebook drama The Social Network , it seems that Ol’ Hundred Takes was anxious to make a “visually dazzling” “four-quadrant tentpole movie,” reports THR . Disney’s budget-crunchers are already saying their novenas. [ THR ]

Rooney Mara: David Fincher Made Me Do 99 Takes of a Single Social Network Scene

Rooney Mara goes through the wringer as the lead of the revamped A Nightmare on Elm Street , but it’s nothing compared to what she had to endure in her upcoming film, the David Fincher-directed Facebook drama The Social Network . The meticulous Fincher is notorious for demanding that his actors peform dozens of takes, as Jake Gyllenhaal found out while shooting Zodiac : “Sometimes we’d do a lot of takes, and he’d turn, and he would say, because he had a computer there, ‘Delete the last 10 takes,'” Gyllenhaal told the NYT in 2007. “And as an actor that’s very hard to hear.” When Movieline spoke to Mara this week, we had to know: Is Fincher still up to his old tricks?

Who Should Play Suzy Kolber in Forthcoming Joe Namath Biopic?

Word on the street is that James Mangold is in talks to direct a biopic about the legendary New York Jets quarterback Joe Namath. While there appears to be no script as of yet, the film would no doubt cover all the crucial milestones of Namath’s life, from leading his team’s heroic upset of the Colts in Super Bowl III to shilling for Hanes BeautyMist pantyhose to his stunning, drunken on-air flirtation with ESPN sideline reporter Suzy Kolber in 2003. The high-profile project will make for one of the most coveted roles in Hollywood, for which every agent in Hollywood will have only one question for the filmmakers: ” Who’s playing Kolber? ”
