Filmmaker J.C. Chandor on His 15-Year Journey to Make Margin Call

Writer-director J.C. Chandor isn’t traditional Verge material — a 15-year veteran of commercials, documentaries and short films whose dramatic feature debut, Margin Call features a eye-popping ensemble cast of Oscar winners (Kevin Spacey, Jeremy Irons), seasoned pros (Stanley Tucci, Demi Moore, Paul Bettany, Simon Baker) and next-generation standouts (Zachary Quinto, Penn Badgley) taking on the tale of a New York City investment bank flirting with oblivion at the dawn of the ongoing financial crisis. And thanks to both the cast and his own formidable chops, Chandor pulls it off with impressive aplomb .

Scarlett Johansson Was Too Hot for David Fincher’s ‘Pervy’ Dragon Tattoo

David Fincher on his search for The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo ‘s Lisbeth Salander: ” Scarlett Johansson was great. It was a great audition, I’m telling you. But the thing with Scarlett is, you can’t wait for her to take her clothes off… Salander should be like E.T. If you put E.T. dolls out before anyone had seen the movie, they would say, ‘What is this little squishy thing?’ Well, you know what? When he hides under the table and he grabs the Reese’s Pieces, you love him! It has to be like that.” He eventually cast the “great weirdo” Rooney Mara for his “pervy” Americanized adaptation; read the full profile here . [ Vogue ]

Quickly, Let’s Come Up With 20 Hilarious New Titles for The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

I accept that The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo will be the sensation of winter, and not just because it looks fantastic in its new trailer. Stieg Larsson’s thrilling Millennium series is perfect for David Fincher’s dark auteurship, and I expect his protege Rooney Mara to pull off protagonist Lisbeth Salander’s Nordic grit. In the meantime, though, Lisbeth’s cartoonishly goth appearance (shown in the movie’s new photos ) is too bizarre not to mock, and I need to get some snark out of my system before the wave of great buzz sweeps through fall. Here are 20 mocking new titles.

226 Seconds of Bliss: Get Lost in the New, Extended Girl With the Dragon Tattoo Trailer

We’ve gone back and forth on the marketing for The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo , from parsing its initial, pseudo-bootlegged trailer to trawling its mysterious Tumblr to breaking down both NSFW and maybe too-SFW images to spending eight early minutes with David Fincher’s adaptation of the international bestseller. In a nutshell, it looks good! And today’s new, extended trailer looks even better.

Madonna to Cut W.E. in Attempt to Salvage Awards Hopes

So there’s good news and bad news about Madonna’s W.E. , whose Venice/Toronto festival coming-out parties made more of a splash for the Material Girl’s attitude toward hydrangeas than for being the type of classy, prestigious filmmaking breakthrough its principals had anticipated. Critics, including Movieline’s own Stephanie Zacharek , were cool toward W.E. at best, with some beating it apart like a glossy piñata. That’s the bad news. The good news is that we know what that calls for, especially with Harvey Weinstein at the domestic-distribution reins: Recut!

Face to Face: Does Latest Dragon Tattoo Image Owe a Debt to Apple?

New images and behind the scenes peeks are steadily emerging over at The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo ‘s Tumblr Mouth Taped Shut , including a new piece of maybe-poster art for the December 21 thriller. But there’s something familiar in the way Daniel Craig’s face is split by Rooney Mara’s shadowy profile. Was someone over at Sony marketing borrowing from the Apple playbook?

Surprise 8-Minute Girl with the Dragon Tattoo Trailer Makes A Case for the Fincher Remake

Over the summer, audiences got their first taste of David Fincher ‘s English-language version of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo in the form of a “leaked” trailer that was either stolen and placed online or (more likely) a brilliantly secretive piece of marketing posed as an accidental viral phenomenon. This week something called Mouth Taped Shut ( http://mouth-taped-shut.com/ ) debuted announcing a special surprise attached to a number of “secret” regional screenings of upcoming Sony films Straw Dogs and Moneyball . That surprise turned out to be an eight-minute preview trailer for Fincher’s Dragon Tattoo .

Dragon Tattoo Tumblr Goes Behind the Scenes With Fincher and Co.

It’s the quotidian, almost invisible bits that matter most behind the camera on a movie set. Take the sliver of video newly available on a Tumblr called Mouth Taped Shut , by all appearances another bit of authorized viral marketing for The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo — this time featuring David Fincher directing Daniel Craig, Christopher Plummer extolling Fincher’s virtues (and leveling a not-so-prescient Oscar-season pledge) and snapshots from the production.

Critic: Flimsy, Terrible Movie Will Make You Happy

“I do like the Fox series , but I’d resisted the idea of the concert film. It just seemed an inherently thin idea. And when compared with some of the greats, say Martin Scorsese’s The Last Waltz on the Band, exceptional for both its music and its insight, it is. But a hallmark of the show, in addition to some of the best musical mash-ups ever, is its celebration of differences, an ode to the outsiders that pack high school hallways. Those kids get an almost equal voice here. Glee represents validation, as significant as the enjoyment to be had from all those show-stopping Broadway-styled productions. So if you’re feeling down, and troubled, and you need a helping hand…” Yeah, actually, I do. Can the Glee movie run to Home Depot and get me some batteries ? [ LAT ]

What’s Her Line? Rooney Mara Gets Pointy in Latest Images From Dragon Tattoo

There’s been precious few sightings to date of Rooney Mara in character as Swedish punk-rock bisexu-hacker Lisbeth Salander in The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo . Which can only be a good thing; there’s only so much toplessness a marketing campaign can really withstand in the far-off months leading up to release. But what’s this? New Rooney? Fully clothed, hooded and pointing at a dude ? Ooh la la, let us at it. (Bonus: Daniel Craig and Christopher Plummer, also fully clothed!)
