David Guetta Dishes On U2 Collaboration

‘We met with Bono and I was really excited, really honored,’ dance superstar tells MTV News of working with pop-rock legends. By Mawuse Ziegbe, with reporting by Akshay Bhansali David Guetta Photo: MTV News David Guetta can check Akon, Rihanna and Flo Rida off his list of superstar collabos, but the next possible high-wattage team-up in the works for the producer/DJ may be much more than the clubs can handle. The French behind-the-boards whiz recently told MTV News that he’s been speaking with pop-rock icon Bono about putting his hit-friendly touch on the next U2 project. “We met with Bono, and I was really excited, really honored because he proposed me to maybe produce some tracks for the next U2 album,” Guetta said. The architect of smashes like the Akon-assisted speaker-crusher “Sexy Chick” and the ubiquitous Black Eyed Peas anthem “I Gotta Feeling,” Guetta added that he’s more than ready to broaden his professional horizons beyond the main-room bangers and R&B-tinged tracks that have netted him tons of fan acclaim and status as a dance-music demigod. “I’ve been more and more open to different styles of music, and obviously electronic music is still my main thing, but I just love music. If it’s good, it doesn’t matter what style,” he said. “After those collaborations with all these urban artists, I thought it would be a real challenge for me to try to go in that direction.” But what would a Guetta-helmed U2 jam sound like? The quartet has spent decades blowing minds with their epic yet intimate pop-rock cuts, but how does one marry the fist-pumping, booty-rattling throb of Guetta’s body of work with the Dubliners’ sensibilities? The DJ told us that’s he’s already trying to figure that out. “That’s done already,” Guetta smiled, admitting that he started tinkering with some sounds in the studio. “I started a few ideas already, yes.” Bono said late last year that U2 are actively exploring a dancefloor-friendly sound in some of their new music, and have also enlisted Broken Bells producer Danger Mouse, Lady Gaga soundsmith RedOne and the Peas’ will.i.am to craft some tracks. “U2’s remixes in the 1990s were a real treasure,” Bono explained to Australian newspaper The Age in October. “So we wanted to make a club-sounding record. We have a pile of songs.” What do you think a David Guetta/ U2 collabo would sound like? Sound off in the comments! David Guetta ‘Honored’ To Have Rihanna On ‘Who’s That Chick’

‘I saw her again and she was like, ‘That record is stuck in my head!’ ‘ producer tells MTV News about infectious club hit. By Akshay Bhansali David Guetta Photo: MTV News David Guetta has made himself at home on the U.S. charts, teaming up with a long list of heavyweight collaborating partners that includes the Black Eyed Peas, Madonna, Lil Wayne, Taio Cruz and Flo Rida. The electronic dance-music producer recently added Rihanna to that list, and he spoke to MTV News about their collabo, “Who’s That Chick.” Guetta originally produced the track for Rihanna’s return-to-pop/R&B album, Loud. But when it didn’t make the final cut, Guetta decided to release “Who’s That Chick” on his own, with the Barbados singer featuring. After just three weeks on the Billboard Dance/Club Play Songs chart, “Chick” is sitting at #3, and at #51 on the Hot 100. And given that the song almost didn’t happen, it’s an impressive feat. “Bu, which is Akon’s brother, was doing the A&R on the new album for Rihanna [and] came to me and asked me for some tracks,” Guetta recalled during a sit-down with MTV News on Wednesday. “And I was feeling terrible because I’m such a huge fan but I didn’t have any beats that would fit. I just didn’t have any ideas. Sometimes two artists wanna work together, but it doesn’t mean it’s gonna happen, because you have to find the right idea.” Luckily, Guetta was able to overcome his temporary beatmakers’ block. “I came up with the idea for the song for ‘Who’s That Chick,’ and I said, ‘That’s it. It’s perfect!’ ” Guetta continued. “I went to see her in London; she was having a concert. And just before the concert, I went to see her backstage and I played her the record and she was like, ‘Yeah, I like it.’ But I think she was doubting it a little bit. And then after the concert, I saw her again and she was like, ‘That record is stuck in my head!’ And I was like, ‘OK, let’s do it!’ Finally, which is really amazing for me, we did it as ‘David Guetta featuring Rihanna.’ It’s a great honor for me.” Remixes of the club jam are now available digitally, including additional edits and mixes by Adam F, Afrojack and Guetta. Fans can also look forward to not one, but two music videos for Guetta’s “Who’s That Chick,” which have been shot and will drop in the next few weeks. (Stick with MTV News as we serve up more details.) Meanwhile, Guetta’s greatest hits album, One More Love, is due on Tuesday and includes the Rihanna-assisted banger. ‘I don’t want to disappoint his fans,’ ‘Dynamite’ singer says. ‘They can be angry little 12-year-olds.’ By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Jim Cantiello Taio Cruz Photo: Jason Kempin/ Getty Images Justin Bieber ‘s team is enlisting some of the music industry’s biggest stars for his next album. And according to Taio Cruz , working on tracks for the pop star’s next album comes with quite a bit of pressure. “Yes, I am [writing for Justin],” the “Dynamite” singer confirmed to MTV News at Z100’s Jingle Ball on Friday . “I was just recently asked to work for Justin Bieber, so that should be good. “Yeah, he is a big deal,” Cruz added. “I don’t want to disappoint his fans — they can be angry little 12-year-olds. He’s fun. He’s young, so we’ll keep it in the right arena; just fun, young pop music.” So how did the collaboration between Cruz and Bieber come to be? Cruz explained, “Sometimes the label or someone or management will ask me to write something specifically and they’ll give me a few topics, a few things to focus on, and then we come up with ideas.” Not much is known about Bieber’s next album, but Justin did share with MTV News in September that it would “probably [come out] fourth quarter next year.” ” Drake is gonna be on that album ; I’m not sure [who else]. I’m gonna ask him if he can get [Lil] Wayne on there,” Bieber revealed. Aside from writing for Bieber, Cruz said that in 2011 he hopes to have a few more radio hits of his own after an impressive 2010. “I would say next year, just more good songs. Hopefully the fans (and new fans) enjoy the music as much as they are currently,” he said. “I’ve been working with so many amazing people — David Guetta and Swedish House Mafia — and producing more stuff myself, as well. I’ve got some really, really good songs in the bag.” What do you think of Justin Bieber/ Taio Cruz collaboration will sound like? Tell us in the comments! Related Artists Justin Bieber Taio Cruz

Rihanna Looking To Re-Create ‘Lie’ Magic On Next Album

‘Love the Way You Lie’ producer Alex Da Kid is working on Rated R follow-up. By Jocelyn Vena Rihanna Photo: Michael Tran/ FilmMagic Rihanna has found a winning formula in her Eminem collaboration, “Love the Way You Lie.” Naturally, for her next album, she’s reportedly looking to the song’s producer, Alex Da Kid, for new hits. “We worked together about a year before ‘Love the Way You Lie’ in London, and obviously that song has helped the people around her and her label say, ‘Oh, that’s a big hit, we want another one,’ ” Alex explained to Billboard. “You know how the music industry is.” The “Lie” producer — who also produced B.o.B’s “Airplanes” — said that the key to Rihanna’s future success is all about finding the balance between Rated R edginess and the hit-making sound of the Eminem track. “I’d say it’s like a mixture of her two sides,” he said. “It’s commercial, but at the same time, it’s got an edge to it — it has substance.” Alex Da Kid isn’t the only producer coming onboard for the album. Songwriter Sean Garrett has been in the studio with the Barbadian star and recently told MTV News that the new songs will reflect Rihanna’s current, lighter state-of-mind. “I can definitely say that her album is definitely gonna be way more exciting, happy,” Garrett said. “I hope she doesn’t mind me saying this. I love Rihanna. She’s fun, she’s like a sister, and I tend to think she doesn’t really take herself too seriously. And I think that’s what this album is gonna be about.” The album will earn fans in the clubs too, if David Guetta has his way with it. “Well, you know, I’m a DJ, so I make beats that make you want to dance,” Guetta told MTV News. “And I think she was one of the first to do that in that urban world, so you know, I think it would be good for her to do it again.” What kind of music do you want to see Rihanna do next? Kelly Rowland Recalls Wrecking Cars On ‘When I Was 17’

‘I was a really, really bad driver,’ the ex-Destiny’s Child singer admits. By Mawuse Ziegbe Kelly Rowland Photo: MTV News As part of the “Bootylicious” chart-topping girl group Destiny’s Child, Kelly Rowland was a key member of a bona fide hit factory. But before she was cranking out global R&B and pop smashes, Rowland remembers smashing up cars as a teenager. The singer reminisces about her bumpy ride toward learning how to drive on the latest episode of MTV’s “When I Was 17.” “I was a really, really bad driver,” the singer admits. “As a matter of fact, I wrecked about three cars before I finally got the whole driving thing down.” Rowland, who has steered her solo career toward success by bringing her pipes to the house-music scene and teaming up with French producer David Guetta on the international 2009 hit “When Love Takes Over,” has presumably mastered the art of driving since her teenage years. However, the memories of Rowland’s automotive antics still haunt the singer’s nearest and dearest. On Saturday’s episode — which also features teenage tales from Latin pop star Enrique Iglesias and Stephanie Pratt from MTV’s “The Hills” — Rowland’s friends remember the R&B diva’s less than smooth moves behind the wheel. “Terrible, terrible,” is how Rowland’s homegirl Angie describes the singer’s driving skills. “Did I say terrible? Terrible driver.” Former Destiny’s Child member LeToya Luckett shudders when she thinks back to Rowland’s early days in the driver’s seat. “Tales of Kelly behind the wheel — Lord help us all,” the “Torn” songstress chuckles. “When I Was 17” — this week featuring Rowland, Enrique Iglesias and Stephanie Pratt — premieres Saturday at 11 a.m. on MTV. Rihanna Is Working On ‘Positive, Explosive’ Tracks With Sean Garrett

‘Her album is definitely gonna be way more exciting, happy,’ songwriter says. By Jayson Rodriguez Rihanna Photo: Fotonoticias/ WireImage Rihanna channeled her personal life into her last album, Rated R, a dark collection of songs that touched on her experience with former flame Chris Brown, who assaulted her just before the 2009 Grammys. For her follow-up, she and her collaborators are promising something more energetic . Rihanna recently told Elle that she’s much happier these days, and gushed about how her new beau, baseball player Matt Kemp, keeps her “sane.” And according to songwriter Sean Garrett , who has been in the studio with Rihanna recently, her new music reflects this state of mind. “I can definitely say that her album is definitely gonna be way more exciting, happy,” Garrett told MTV News. “I hope she doesn’t mind me saying this. I love Rihanna. She’s fun, she’s like a sister, and I tend to think she doesn’t really take herself too seriously. And I think that’s what this album is gonna be about. “Remember when Rihanna was just the little girl from the island and she was just having fun with ‘Pon de Replay’ and enjoying life?” Garrett continued. “It always seemed like, ‘Dag, she has that thing. ‘ And it wasn’t so serious until the incident happened. And everything became so serious. That’s just life. But I’m just happy to see her back. And I can definitely say the records that we’ve been working on are very positive and very explosive. Heavy in the club.” In addition to Garrett, producer David Guetta said he wants to work with Rihanna and help her revisit her “Umbrella” days. “Well, you know, I’m a DJ, so I make beats that make you want to dance,” Guetta told MTV News. “And I think she was one of the first to do that in that urban world, so you know, I think it would be good for her to do it again.” What musical direction would you like to see Rihanna go on her next album? David Guetta Wants To Drop Dance Beats On Rihanna’s Next LP

The superstar French DJ/ producer tells MTV News he and the pop diva have discussed a collaboration. By Jocelyn Vena, with additional reporting by Matt Elias and Akshay Bhansali Rihanna Photo: Frank Micelotta/ Getty Images When Rihanna released her Rated R last fall, she showed fans that she was in a darker, more serious mood. Tracks like “Russian Roulette” and “Hard” were decidedly more introspective than her past club bangers. But if superstar French DJ David Guetta has his way, he’ll have Rih back to singing tunes like her mega-hit “Umbrella.” “Well, you know I’m a DJ, so I make beats that make you wanna dance,” Guetta told MTV News at the Activision E3 party in Los Angeles. “And I think she was one of the first to do that in that urban world, so you know, I think it would be good for her to do it again.” While the producer already has some material in mind for the pop star, he said it was just a matter of scheduling. “We[‘re] thinking of doing something together, yes,” he revealed. “Yeah, yeah, yeah [the beat’s ready], we just have to make sure it’s okay with her schedule and my schedule cause we … this is what happens. Unfortunately, it’s not only about the music anymore, it’s also about schedules, which is really boring but, you know.” Dutch DJ/ producer Afrojack has also gotten behind the boards, Guetta said, crafting what he hopes will be the next big Rihanna hit. “Like, he was in the studio with me the first time [after] he finished the new song for Rihanna,” Guetta recalled of Afrojack. “He was like, ‘Oh, my God! You gotta hear this! It’s crazy!’ I was expecting some crazy club sh–. He played me that track and it was a good track. I think pop-wise it’s a fatter sound. Musically, it’s as high a level as RedOne, Lady Gaga’s producer.” Rihanna has been vocal about bringing up the energy level on her next album. ” Rated R, I love the sound of it, in terms of the bass,” Rihanna told MTV Korea in February. “I really like the bottom, the grime of it. But if I were to combine that with more energetic, up-tempo pop records, then I think that will be a happy marriage. And that’s where we’ll probably go next.” Where would you like to see Rihanna go musically on her next album? Tell us in the comments! Related Artists Rihanna David Guetta

Lil Jon’s Revamped Crunk Rock Trades Rock For ‘Lifestyle’ Music

‘We live life to the fullest — that’s what crunk rock really means now,’ he tells MTV News. By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Sway Calloway Lil Jon Photo: MTV News Lil Jon once proclaimed “crunk ain’t dead,” and these days, he could easily rework that former mantra in support of his long-delayed Crunk Rock album . The long-in-the-works project finally has a release date set, June 8, and Jon is in full promo mode behind the project. The album, in the works for four years due to a feud with his former label, transformed over time from a rock-leaning effort into one that reflects his new life as a working DJ. “Initially, when I started work on it I was collaborating with a lot of rock producers and rock musicians,” he told MTV News. “And then, as time progressed and as I was going through stuff with the label and as I was DJing again, then I got the new deal and so on and so forth. The new energy started to come around me by being in the club. It started meaning we’re crunk all the time, we party like rock stars, we live life to the fullest — that’s what crunk rock really means now. “Because there’s so many different kinds of Lil Jons that’s on this album that it’s not just rock and roll,” he added. “You got some rock kind of collaborations, but you got some electro collaborations, you got crunk music, you got dance music, you got all kinds of stuff, Bali funk. We got so many different kinds of collaborations on the album that it changed really into a lifestyle. We live like this.” Crunk Rock features an array of producers, including David Guetta, Drumma Boy and Steve Aoki, whom Jon recently worked with on the DJ’s own project. Pitbull, R. Kelly, Mario, LMFAO and 3OH!3 are among the collaborators who chipped in to help Jon on the album. The producer said he took a step back from manning the boards on Crunk Rock to help him reset and recharge after his battle with TVT, whom he released a number of albums with before. But the beatsmith, who has scored hits for Usher (“Yeah!”) and E-40 in the past, said fans should expect to hear him on upcoming projects by Flo Rida and Pitbull, among others. Last week, Lil Jon premiered his latest video, “Outta Your Mind,” featuring LMFAO, the lead offering from Crunk Rock. Are you excited to hear new music from Lil Jon? Let us know in the comments!
