When Lea Michele Met Barbra Streisand: A Play in Two Tweets

To say that Lea Michele has been waiting to meet Barbra Streisand for a long time is a bit of an understatement. When Movieline caught up with the Glee star last summer to play My Favorite Scene , all she could talk about was Babs’ star-making turn in Funny Girl . “I just related to that movie so much,” she said. “It’s my favorite movie ever.” As anyone who saw her performance at the Tonys — or any minute of Glee , in general — can attest, she wasn’t lying. So, what would happen if Michele ever got the opportunity to meet Streisand out in public? Some hyperventilating and tweeting, of course.

Who Should Present This Year’s Best Picture Oscar?

“Tom Hanks just announced as presenter. Will be the Best Pic presenter do we think?” And with this tweet today Oscar-watcher Sasha Stone has commenced the speculative chatter around the most influential temp job in Hollywood: Who will present this year’s Academy Award for Best Picture? On DVD: With 15 Extra Minutes, Seeing Robin Hood is Even More Disbelieving

Only about 10 million Americans resisted the critics’ irritated wailings and bought tickets for Ridley Scott’s mastodon movie Robin Hood this spring, and so the rest of us, now that the DVD is here, can find out what all the non-fuss was about. Even with 15 extra minutes thrown in for “the director’s cut,” it’s truly not an awful movie — it’s just so hugely redundant of other movies, and so brutally humorless, that when you watch it your brain begins to react like it’s trapped in a sensory deprivation tank.

Val Kilmer Passed on ‘Hardcore Pornography’ of Blue Velvet

Another fun Movieline Vault discovery : While discussing Batman Forever in 1995, Val Kilmer confessed he missed the boat on David Lynch’s Blue Velvet . ” ‘I was given [a copy of that script] because [at one point] I was involved with Dune ,’ he recalls. ‘It would have been my first job for damn near a year. So, Dave gave me the script and it was straight-out, hardcore pornography before page 30. I never finished it. I said, “Good luck, but I can’t do this.” It isn’t what he ended up making,’ he says, pointedly. ‘That movie, I would have done.'” Of course. [ The Vault ]

On DVD: Lost on Planet Werner with My Son, My Son, What Have Ye Done

Like a missile out of the declared Hollywood underground, the Werner Herzog-directed, David Lynch-produced, Michael Shannon-starring My Son, My Son, What Have Ye Done lands in your yard and dares you to get near, lest it finally detonate. Fresh to DVD this week, it’s not a movie you can bring expectations to, unless you’re expecting a cranial injury and a case of vertigo.

VIDEO: Guy Ritchie and Jude Law Want to Sell You Cologne

You’d think Guy Ritchie’s lightning-fast cuts and shotgun-to-the-face subtlety would make him a perfect candidate for directing advertisements. But his five-minute short film with Jude Law for Dior Homme is a little slow, very pretentious and doesn’t even have one explosion! It looks pretty though.

On VOD: Will the Real Best Reality-Competition Series Please Stand Up?

I’m hard to please, I know, but reality shows just won’t interest me until they actually involve outright homicide, like they do in movies. You know, Death Race 2000 (just out on Blu-ray!), Rollerball , Battle Royale , ad infinitum. I guess until that happens we’ll just have to be satisfied with the simulacra, including Daniel Minahan’s forgotten mock-doc Series 7: The Contenders , on demand…

1 Set of Ceramic Speakers, 10 Artists. Including David Lynch, Tobias Wong (Slideshow)

We are big fans of erstwhile TreeHugger contributor and designer Joey Roth, and of his elegant ceramic speakers , reviewed on TreeHugger here . They are simple and elegant, made of natural materials and built to last. But Joey can’t leave well enough alone, so he gave a set of speakers to collaborators “to modify and reshape using their own visual language…to work with a musician they know to produce a track to accompany their speaker interpretations.” The work… Read the full story on TreeHugger
