Real Life Set It Off?: Unarmed Flatbush Woman Killed By Police After Crashing Car During Rush Hour “Please Don’t Kill Me!” [Video]

Unarmed Brooklyn Woman Killed By NYPD After Car Crash Shantel Davis was killed in Brooklyn by NYPD after crashing her car in Flatbush: “A Brooklyn detective shot and killed an unarmed woman in a stolen car after she blew through three red lights, hit a minivan and tried to escape by driving in reverse, police said. The incident unfolded about 5:40 p.m. in East Flatbush when two plainclothes narcotics cops spotted Shantel Davis, 23, at the wheel of a gray Toyota Camry she allegedly carjacked at gunpoint on June 5. Davis — who had eight arrests on her rap sheet, sources said — ran a series of red lights along Church Ave. and crossed a double yellow line to pass cars at E. 38th St., where she smacked into the minivan, NYPD spokesman Paul Browne said. As the two cops approached the Camry, they saw Davis slide over to the passenger side, where the seat had been stripped out, and try to open the door. One officer, who has been on the force six years, got hit by the door and was thrown backward, Browne said. Davis then got back in the driver’s seat, put the car in reverse and hit the gas, police said. Simultaneously, another cop, identifed by sources as Detective Phillip Atkins, 44, was entering the driver’s side of the Camry, with his gun in hand. “He’s attempting with the other hand to shift the gear into park,” Browne said. “When she’s hitting the gas, a single round was discharged from his firearm, striking the woman in the chest.” Browne said it was too soon to say whether the detective, who has 12 years on the force, meant to pull the trigger or if it was an accident. Witnesses described a scene of chaos before the shooting. Dave McKenzie said he heard the cops yelling: “Get out! Get out!” “They try to pull her out of the car, and she fights them,” McKenzie said, recalling the woman screaming, “Let me go! Let me go!” “ ‘I don’t want to be killed! Don’t kill me!’ ” the woman yelled, McKenzie added. Lorraine Preddie, 61, said that after she heard the crash, she saw the detective in a blue NYPD T- shirt with a shield around his neck. “The next thing I saw was the police officer took his gun out and fired a shot,” she said. Witnesses said it was instantly clear the woman was gravely wounded.“She was bleeding, and then she just dropped. She fell on the floor facedown. She was shaking and the blood was just going out of her,” said one woman who works at a nearby laundermat. “She was in the street,” Preddie said. “They started giving her chest compressions and took her in the ambulance.” Davis died at Kings County Hospital. Councilman Jumaane Williams broke the news to her family. Police said the owner of the Camry confirmed that Davis swiped the vehicle. Davis, who was identified by family members, was due in court Friday on a kidnapping and attempted murder case stemming from a May 2011 attack. “This is like a bad dream,” said cousin Stephanie Gilmer, 40, who called Davis a “sweetie pie.” “She was only 23. She had her whole life in front of her.” Despite Davis’ criminal record, Assemblyman Nick Perry said he was concerned about the circumstances of her death “because the investigation I have seems to suggest this woman was not a threat.” Mike Palladino, head of NYPD detectives union, backed Atkins, who had never fired his gun in the line of duty. “Based on the facts and the circumstances, I’m confident that our detective’s actions were appropriate and justified,” Palladino said. “ Turn the page for the video

Oscars 2012 Predictions: Best Actress

‘The Help’ star Viola Davis will likely help herself to a statuette on Sunday. By Amy Wilkinson Viola Davis in “The Help” Photo: DreamWorks The Oscars love nothing more than a role that allows an actress to a) portray a historical figure or b) completely transform herself physically. (And, lest we forget, some combination thereof, i.e. Charlize Theron’s chilling turn as serial killer Aileen Wuornos in 2003’s “Monster”). This year’s Best Actress field is no exception, with four of the five nominees falling squarely into one of these categories. Representing real-life ladies we have Meryl Streep as first female British prime minister Margaret Thatcher in “The Iron Lady” and Michelle Williams as breathy blond bombshell Marilyn Monroe in “My Week With Marilyn.” In the transformation category is Rooney Mara, all pierced and tatted as punk-hacker Lisbeth Salander in “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo,” and Glenn Close playing a woman playing a man in the period drama “Albert Nobbs.” And the wildcard nominee? “The Help” star Viola Davis. Yet, despite her non-conformity, Davis may just be the lady going home Sunday night with Oscar. Can anyone top her? Here are our predictions for Best Actress. Who will win : The big-screen adaptation of Kathryn Stockett’s 2009 novel has been riding a wave of accolades this awards season, notching several wins at the Screen Actors Guild Awards, including awards for Davis, co-star Octavia Spencer and the entire ensemble cast. (In fact, we’ve already predicted a win for Spencer in the Best Supporting Actress category too.) Despite Williams and Streep both scoring Golden Globes for their respective roles, we expect Davis triumph thanks to her moving portrayal of Southern maid Aibileen Clark in this racially charged, yet uplifting film. Who should win : Davis is a strong contender to be sure, but going on sheer dedication alone, the trophy should go to relative newcomer Mara. The girl pierced her nipple for goodness’ sake! Mara has so embodied Stieg Larsson’s embattled heroine that we’ve been having a hard time separating her on-screen persona from her off-screen, as she continues to walk carpets sporting Salander’s raven locks and even darker wardrobe. Sure, the film didn’t perform as well as many had hoped, but it had nothing to do with Mara’s gritty performance. As it turns out, we’re a fool for a good transformation role too. Clive Davis Opens Up About Whitney Houston’s ‘Genius’

The legendary producer relives the pop diva’s 1983 television debut on ‘Whitney Houston: In Her Own Words.’ By Kara Warner Whitney Houston Photo: MTV News There were several noteworthy aspects of MTV News’ special tribute “Whitney Houston: In Her Own Words” Wednesday, such as the rarely seen interview clips of Houston from her network debut in 1986 through her final interview, as well as her unforgettable impact on music as a whole straight from the man responsible for her discovery at age 19, Clive Davis. “The week after I signed her I had an open opportunity from Merv Griffin. He said, ‘Whenever you run across a talent that blows you away, I want you to bring her on my show,’ ” Davis told MTV News of arranging Houston’s memorable 1983 television debut. “Either you’ve got or you don’t have it,” Davis is shown telling Griffin in a clip from that specific show. “She’s got it, wait ’til you hear her,” Griffin said. “Here’s Whitney Houston.” “My introduction of Whitney was that if there’s going to be one performer for the next generation who combined the beauty and lyric phrasing of a Lena Horne with those Gospel fiery roots of an Aretha Franklin, it would be Whitney Houston,” Davis said. The legendary record producer attributed Houston’s genius to her ability to fully interpret and embody a song. “You see the genius that Whitney Houston has as an interpreter of material and you realize why genius can be applied to only a few interpretive performers,” Davis said. “She finds meaning and depth and soulfulness in a song that often the writer and composer never really knew was there. Whitney approached that with her phrasing; she studied hard. She would go into the studio, sometimes she would do it on one take. Once she agrees that the song is special for her, she really does in every matter make it her own.” Share your condolences with Whitney’s family and friends on our Facebook page. Bobby Brown Breaks Down Onstage Paying Tribute To Whitney Houston

Singer’s shaken ex-husband turns to Mississippi crowd for support during New Edition concert. By Jason Kaufman Whitney Houston and Bobby Brown in 2000 Photo: Larry Marano/Getty Images Just hours after Whitney Houston’s death , her ex-husband, Bobby Brown, took to the stage and was visibly shaken in front of the crowd. Brown was performing with New Edition in Mississippi. Upon hearing the news of Houston’s passing, TMZ.com reported that he was comforted by his bandmates backstage at Southaven’s Landers Center. The Associated Press says members of the R&B act took to the stage without him and told the crowd, “This one is for Whitney.” Brown soon made his way onstage to join them and was met with a standing ovation. An emotional Brown spoke about Houston to the near-capacity crowd. “First of all, I want to tell you that I love you all,” he reportedly said. “Second, I would like to say, ‘I love you Whitney.’ The hardest thing for me to do is come on this stage.” Brown told the fans that their support for New Edition over the years was the only thing that allowed him to get through the show. Us magazine reports that the audience appeared to be willing him through a performance of New Edition’s 1996 single “Hit Me Off” with their applause. A concertgoer told Us that Brown, who was married to Houston for almost 15 years, broke down onstage again while performing his solo hit “Roni” and asked the audience to sing along. During the intermission, the early Houston hit “You Give Good Love” played over the Landers Center’s sound system. The AP reported that New Edition performed 10 songs over more than an hour. As the concert wound down, Brown could not hold back the tears. As his voice cracked during one of the final numbers, he waved to fans and walked off the stage. Brown, who had a tumultuous marriage with Houston before their split, was not available to talk to the media either before or after the performance. Todd Mastry, the executive director of the Landers Center, was asked by reporters about the mood backstage before the show. “It’s what you would expect it to be when something like this happens,” Mastry said. “Respectful.” While Brown was dealing with his grief in the South, artists across the country paid tribute to Houston, with stars like Mariah Carey and Rihanna taking to Twitter while Alicia Keys, Clive Davis, LL Cool J and Tony Bennett toasted the late star at several pre-Grammy parties in Los Angeles. Whitney Houston Celebrated: Inside Clive Davis’ Grammy Party

MTV News is on the scene as Alicia Keys, Diddy, Pitbull, Tony Bennett, more pay tribute to late singer at Davis’ annual pre-Grammy bash. By James Montgomery Swizz Beatz, Alicia Keys and Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs at Clive Davis’ 2012 Pre-Grammy Gala Photo: WireImage BEVERLY HILLS, California — Ever since 1976, Clive Davis has been throwing his pre-Grammy gala, a celebration of the year in music that’s part concert, part cocktail reception, part roast. It’s become the event during Grammy week, a black-tie party attended by the biggest stars, a soiree as synonymous with the awards as those golden gramophone trophies. And yet, in its 35 years, there’s probably never been a Clive Davis party like the one that took place on Saturday night. It occurred just hours after the death of Whitney Houston , the legendary producer and music executive’s crown jewel, was announced, in the very hotel where Houston’s body was discovered. Understandably, there was a rather palpable pall to the proceedings (so much so that several outlets reported the grieving Davis had decided to cancel the event), though most in attendance seemed to believe Whitney would’ve wanted the show to go on. So while throngs of Houston fans began to hold a candlelight vigil outside the Beverly Hilton, inside, Davis himself was stepping up to the podium to deliver a eulogy for an artist who was not only his greatest discovery, but one of his closest friends. “By now, sadly, we’ve all learned of the unspeakable [tragedy] of our beloved Whitney’s passing,” Davis said, visibly shaken. “I don’t have to mask my emotions, not in front of this room filled with so many dear friends. I am personally devastated. Whitney was so full of life … she was a beautiful person with talent beyond compare. She graced the stage with a regal presence … and her family asked that the show go on.” Davis then asked those in attendance — everyone from Richard Branson and Joni Mitchell to Sean “Diddy” Combs and Serena Williams (not to mention Britney Spears, Lana Del Rey, Adam Lambert and more) — to join him in a moment of silence to honor Houston’s memory, and you could hear a pin drop. Then, he announced that this night’s gala would be dedicated to the singer, before announcing, “And now, on with the music.” For the next three-plus hours, the talent in the room did their best to not only rise to the occasion but to vocalize the shock and sadness they were feeling in the hours after Houston’s death. Tony Bennett remembered that after Davis had signed Houston to Arista Records in the early 1980s, he told him, “Clive, you finally got the greatest singer I ever heard in my life,” before performing a somber rendition of Frank Sinatra’s “How Do You Keep the Music Playing?” Diddy recalled Houston’s smile and “natural, positive spirit,” before telling the audience that “Whitney, simply put, had the greatest voice in the world. She was a gift from God.” After finishing his tribute, Combs then reminded the crowd that Davis’ gala has always been about celebrating — he repeated the phrase “There ain’t no party like a Clive Davis party” — and urged those in attendance to get out of their seats and give both Davis and Bennett standing ovations. That energy carried over into Kinks frontman Ray Davies’ raucous set, which had the men of Mumford & Sons leaping out of their seats. Pitbull, who teamed with Ne-Yo for a spirited sprint through their hit “Give Me Everything,” also managed to lift the event out of the shadows. Alicia Keys shared stories of singing “I Want to Dance With Somebody” in front of the mirror as a child, and she talked about her longtime friendship with Houston, whom she called “a sister.” She then played an emotional mini-set on the piano, which included her leading the audience in a sing-along to the chorus of “No One,” a fitting tribute indeed. Wiz Khalifa, who earlier in the night told MTV News that he planned on celebrating Houston’s life onstage, lived up to that promise during his brief set, burning through his hit “Black and Yellow” while backed by a cracking live band. And Brit import Jessie J had the attention of the entire room as she spoke about Houston’s influence, saying that when she first got signed at the age of 17, her #1 goal was meeting the singer. Of course, not everyone found the strength to perform. Towards the end of the night, Davis once again returned to the lectern and informed the audience that two of Houston’s disciples, Brandy and Monica, were scheduled to take the stage (he added that Houston had attended a rehearsal of their performance on Thursday), but were too emotional to make it through their song. And in a night overflowing with tributes to the late singer, it was that moment that truly said it all. Houston was not only a prodigious talent, she was also a friend, a mother, a family member … and all those points were mentioned time and time again during Saturday’s celebration. But the unspoken grief of two of Houston’s closest friends made it abundantly clear that she was also loved dearly, and that those who knew her best are struggling to put her death into perspective. But at the very least, this night was the first step. MTV News’ Sway and James Montgomery will be live from the Grammys red carpet this Sunday, February 12 starting at 5 p.m. ET to get reactions from music’s biggest stars on the death of Whitney Houston. Watch Reactions and Remembrances at MTV.com. Share your condolences with Whitney’s family and friends on our Facebook page. The New York Knicks Scoop Up Veteran Cavs Point Gaurd Baron Davis To Help ‘Melo And ‘Mare

This shortened NBA season looks like it may just be exciting after all… After using the amnesty clause on Chauncey Billups, the Knicks have been hunting a new starting point guard. Mike Bibby recently signed, but that’s not exactly the answer. Baron Davis was amnestied by the Cavs and cleared waivers, opening up the opportunity for him to sign anywhere. And that anywhere has turned out to be the Knicks, according to ESPN.com and confirmed by Ken Berger of CBSSports.com With the Knicks being well over the cap, the deal had to be for the veteran minimum or the “mini mid-level” the Knicks have. According to SI.com, it is indeed for the $2.5 mini mid-level. Which is why this makes a lot of sense for New York. It’s a low risk, potentially high value signing. Davis still has a lot of game left, it just comes down to motivation and health. And with him being in New York playing on a solid Knicks team, you have to think he’s going to be ready. He’s dealing with a back injury though, and could be out up to 8-10 weeks. However, after being amnetied by the Cavs, that timetable miraculously dropped to 4-6. Other teams reportedly going after Davis were the Heat and Lakers, so the Knicks landing their target to likely start once he’s healthy is a big move. Not to say Davis is going to be a star or anything, but considering the options right now for New York, Davis is about as good as they could do in their situation. Bibby is a nice veteran backup, Toney Douglas isn’t a point guard and Iman Shumpert is mostly an unknown. Davis could at least step in and handle the offense. Knicks fans, hate it or love it?!?!
