But it seems it may have been his latest stunt in a bid to avoid the death penalty for his crimes. Via Omaha.com : Jenkins told a Douglas County judge during a recent telephone hearing that he “self-mutilated” by trying to carve “666” into his forehead. The problem? Jenkins was looking in a mirror. So he carved the 6s backward — making them look more like upside-down 9s, according to court officials. Jenkins reportedly told Douglas County District Judge Peter Bataillon that he carved the 666 — known in the biblical book of Revelation as the number of the Beast — because he is not receiving treatment for his purported mental illness. He asked the judge to order the Nebraska State Patrol to investigate. Bataillon declined. It is not clear yet whether Jenkins will use the latest self-mutilation to try to get himself again declared incompetent before he can face a death-penalty hearing. Jenkins mutilated himself last year, and Bataillon delayed his death-penalty hearing. It took a year before the judge declared him competent to stand trial. Jenkins’ disclosure of a Manson-style mark — the California killer has a swastika between his eyes — was just the latest antic in a case that has dragged on for 20 months. The strange case of Robert Durst continues to get more bizarre by the day. On March 14, Durst was arrested in connection with the 2001 death of his friend Susan Berman. He has since been charged with first-degree murder , meaning that he could face the death penalty if convicted. In the days following his arrest, those who knew Durst best – or simply encountered him during the decades-long period in which he somehow managed to avoid prosecution – have come forward with strange stories of the real estate heir’s troubling behavior. Earlier this week, Douglas Durst stated that he believes his brother killed seven pet dogs as “practice” before allegedly murdering his wife Kathleen McCormack in 1982. Today, Durst has been accused of another disturbing act of animal mutilation by the former judge who presided over the 2003 trial in which Durst was acquitted of the murder of Morris Black. In an interview with the New York Daily News, Susan Criss recalls making a horrific discovery outside of her home, three years after Durst’s trial concluded. “It was June 29, 2006,” Criss tells the newspaper. “I came home from work around 5 pm, and you can imagine how hot it was. I saw something on the walk that leads straight to my front door. “It was a little gray cat that had been cut behind the shoulders. It was a head with its two front legs…It was not just thrown there, it was placed there. “I believe it was Robert Durst. I know this guy had a history of cutting up his dogs.” Criss says she first ran inside to make sure that Durst had not harmed her dogs. She then called local police, who performed several tests, but were unable to prove that Durst had killed the cat. Criss says she believes Durst left the head as revenge for her testifying against him at his parole hearing.
