Former Redskins Executive Vinnie Cerrato Weighs In On Albert Haynesworth

The man who brought Albert Haynesworth to Washington has weighed in on the current situation brewing at Redskins Park. “When he signed, he said he wanted to prove everybody wrong,” said Vinnie Cerrato, the team’s executive vice president of football operations during the 2008-09 seasons. “He said he wanted to show everybody that it’s not about the money. He said he wanted to be the best that ever played. He said he wanted to be like Reggie White. He said Reggie White was his hero, so live up to what you said. Don’t have it change just because a coach changed.” Cerrato went on to say that Haynesworth would actually enjoy playing for Shanahan and that he doesn’t even really know what his role on the defense would be because he hasn’t been in Washington. Arkansas Has ‘Definitely Put Out Some Feelers’ About Joining Big 12

On Wednesday, a report emerged that Cowboys owner Jerry Jones would like to see Arkansas (and Notre Dame) join the Big 12 which would instantly make it one of the top conferences. According to Chip Brown of Orangebloods.com ( via Twitter ), that report has some legs. Sources tell OB Arkansas has definitely put out feelers about possibly joining the Big 12, but the B12 votes don’t appear to be there yet. Arkansas has a better chance of joining than Notre Dame but its unclear if Jones was implying the two are a package deal. Arkansas, since joining the SEC, has seen its national profile drop. If it joined the Big 12, it would get back part of its Texas recruiting base as well as some relevance. Jerry Jones is a powerful man and, most importantly, has lots of cash and influence to make something happen. This is a situation worth monitoring.

Blackwater/Xe’s Weekend Warrior Bootcamp

For the vigilant patriot, Blackwater, rebranded as Xe Services, now offers classes in “Home Defense” at their 6,000-acre North Carolina and 80-acre northwest Illinois training locations. Xe’s training division goes by the name U.S. Training Center. According to the center’s website, the “Home Defense” course will make “armed citizen[s] more aware of personal security whether at home or away” as they go about their duty of “protecting self and family members.” On the company website, Tammy G. offered this testimonial, “While I hope I never have to put the skills into practice defending myself or my son, I feel like I now have the tools necessary to do that wisely and safely.” The two-day course, which is limited to 12 participants, has as a prerequisite “basic pistol marksmanship” and costs $400, not including room and board. Provided for this fee are a holster, a magazine carrier, 100 rounds of Simunition ammunition, safety gear to protect the wearer from head to groin, and a Simunition pistol—a Glock, Sig Sauer or Beretta, your choice. Further, it is “highly recommended” that students provide their own cover garment “for concealed draw.” Should you choose to enroll in the class, 25 percent of your time would be spent in classroom lectures and 75 percent with “practical instruction.” Topics explored include “use of force,” “force-on-force scenarios,” “away from home considerations,” “mindset/indications of mental state,” “basic room clearing techniques for the homeowner” and “dealing with police.” The course description concludes with this “disclaimer” (in bold): “Local authorities should be consulted on use of Lethal Force and the use of Lethal Force to defend lives and property.” In these uncertain times, the concerned citizen can’t be too careful. According to the company website, “The students will receive classroom instruction and will engage in shoot/no-shoot, force-on-force realistic scenarios based on actual events that have occurred where their decision making process will be explored and tested.” According to the U.S. Training Center website, the ultimate objective of “Home Defense” is to “inform the concerned citizen on methods of protecting the home front.” What kind of “home front” scenarios does this course prepare you for? The “Home Defense” course description doesn’t say, but knowing that Erik Prince is Blackwater’s founder and owner provides a clue. In a sworn affidavit, filed in a Federal court in Virginia last August, a former Blackwater employee, known as John Doe #2, said that Blackwater founder and owner Erik Prince “views himself as a Christian crusader tasked with eliminating Muslims and the Islamic faith from the globe.” The former Blackwater employee said: “Mr. Prince intentionally deployed to Iraq certain men who shared his vision of Christian supremacy, knowing and wanting these men to take every available opportunity to murder Iraqis. Many of these men used call signs based on the Knights of the Templar, the warriors who fought the Crusades … Mr. Prince operated his companies in a manner that encouraged and rewarded the destruction of Iraqi life. For example, Mr. Prince’s executives would openly speak about going over to Iraq to ‘lay Hajiis out on cardboard.’ Going to Iraq to shoot and kill Iraqis was viewed as a sport or game.” In his book, Blackwater: The Rise of the World’s Most Powerful Mercenary Army, Jeremy Scahill describes Prince as a man “dedicated to a Christian-supremacist agenda.” Looks like the company’s classes ensure all’s white on the Western front. http://www.inthesetimes.com/article/6019/weekend_warrior_bootcamp added by: Stoneyroad

Rep. Alan Grayson Introduces the "War Is Making You Poor" Act | | AlterNet

The bill would cut the DoD's budget and use that money to make the first $35,000 each American earns tax-free. May 23, 2010 | Last week, as Congress prepared to pass yet another “emergency” spending bill to cover America’s costly operations in Iraq and Afghanistan — to the tune of $159 billion this time around — Rep. Alan Grayson, D-Florida, introduced a bill that would force the Pentagon to pick up the tab out of its ample regular budget. The War Is Making You Poor Act is elegant in its simplicity. Instead of financing these longstanding conflicts outside of the regular budgeting process, where they’re not factored into deficit projections, Grayson’s bill would make the DoD work within its means, and the money would instead be used for an across-the-board tax cut that would make the first $35,000 each American earns tax-free. “The purpose of this bill,” wrote Grayson last week, “is to connect the dots, and to show people in a real and concrete way the cost of these endless wars.” It’s not just the costs of active shooting wars; with hundreds of bases overseas, as far as the defense budget is concerned Americans have been on a permanent wartime footing, to varying degrees, since Pearl Harbor was attacked in 1941. “War is a permanent feature of our societal landscape,” wrote Grayson, “so much so that no one notices it anymore.” The bill already has several co-sponsors, including at least two Republicans (albeit maverick GOPers Ron Paul of Texas and Walter Jones of South Carolina). But since the Pentagon would have to take money out of its regular budget — largely from the budget for newfangled hardware — the DoD and influential defense contractors will no doubt fight it tooth-and-nail. But the War Is Making You Poor Act might have a major impact on our national dialogue regardless. It highlights in a visceral way what Americans lose by privileging money for guns over butter. “The costs of the war have been rendered invisible,” wrote Grayson. “There's no draft. Instead, we take the most vulnerable elements of our population, and give them a choice between unemployment and missile fodder. Government deficits conceal the need to pay in cash for the war.” Grayson’s measure might just shine a bright light on those “opportunity costs.” Budgeting is all about priorities, and the bill can raise public awareness of that fact. The Right has done a remarkable job convincing the American public that tax dollars used for programs that help the middle class or the poor are dollars “taken out of your pocket,” but no such consideration is given to the trillions spent on financing our military operations. That was apparent during the recent debate over the Affordable Care Act, when Republicans, Blue Dog Democrats and most of the media focused relentlessly on the costs of the bill, and its likely impact on future deficits. No such discussion took place when the invasion of Iraq was being debated. Grayson’s bill makes the same appeal to self-interest the conservatives have used to often devastating effect to oppose everything from Medicare to public education. It says: “We can pay for these wars, or we can make them take it out of the defense contractors’ hides and get our first $35K tax-free.” added by: Monkey_Films

Finally: The Flying Car

“The Defense Advanced Projects Agency (DARPA) has cleared the Transformer (TX) program for takeoff. If it flies, by 2015 U.S. soldiers will be able to ride into battle aboard a four-person flying car that can cruise in the air like an airplane, drive on the ground like an SUV, rove 250 miles on one tank of fuel and not require a runway to get airborne. DARPA, the Department of Defense office that is tasked with exploring futuristic technologies that may have military applications, held an industry day workshop for companies earlier this year to solicit proposals for developing a prototype vehicle. Proposals are due May 27. The Transformer will give troops the ability to avoid traditional and unconventional threats such as ambushes and Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) and road obstructions. DARPA envisions a variety of use-case scenarios for the TX, including strike and raid, interdiction, intervention, insurgency/counterinsurgency, reconnaissance, medical evacuation and logistics supply.” More at link! http://www.livescience.com/technology/DARPA-flying-car-warfare-100422.html added by: DeliaTheArtist
