Gabrielle Giffords to Resign from Congress

Following an inspiring return to Congress in August – one that took place just a few months after she was shot in the head during a campaign event in Arizona – Gabrielle Giffords announced today that was is resigning from her position. “A lot has happened over the past year. We cannot change that,” Giffords said in a video on her website. “I don’t remember much from that horrible day, but I will never forget the trust you placed in me to be your voice. Thank you for your prayers and for giving me time to recover. I have more work to do on my recovery. So to do what is best for Arizona, I will step down this week.” Giffords is expected to attend the State of the Union Address on Tuesday night and then submit a letter of resignation to House Speaker John Boehner and Arizona Governor Jan Brewer. The state will hold a special election to fill the Democrat’s seat later this year.

Jon Huntsman Drops Out Of Presidential Race

Former Obama ambassador failed to pick up momentum in race. By Gil Kaufman John Huntsman speaks during the 2012 New Hampshire primary Photo: Getty Images After a series of disappointing finishes and a failure to emerge from the pack, former Utah governor Jon Huntsman announced his withdrawal from the 2012 presidential race on Monday (January 16). Huntsman threw his support behind leading candidate Mitt Romney in a bid to unite a Republican party that is sorely divided over which candidate will take on President Obama in November. Huntsman served as ambassador to China in the Obama administration and was the sole voice of moderation amid a pack of White House contenders that have done their utmost to highlight their conservative bona fides. After skipping campaigning in Iowa
to focus all his energies on last week’s New Hampshire primary, he came in a distant third to Romney and Ron Paul. And though he put on a brave face and said his #3 finish in New Hampshire was a “ticket to ride” to the next contest in South Carolina on January 21, the reality of his anemic support base appears to have become clear to the man whose bid was launched on the promise of bringing civility back to the process. Almost from the start, Huntsman was unable to win over a Republican voting base that looked at his service in the current Democrat administration with scorn and blanched at his support on some social issues, including civil unions for gay couples. In a campaign that struggled to pull polling numbers out of the single digits for most of the past year, one of the bright spots for Huntsman was the media embrace of his music-loving daughters’
social-networking prowess. Sisters Mary Anne, 26, Abby, 25, and Liddy, 24, helped focus some attention on their dad’s often-overlooked campaign with their irreverent viral videos and tweets. . Speaking to MTV’s Power of 12 last week in New Hampshire, the Huntsman trio said the grueling campaign was a “family affair”
that they were really enjoying. “We call it a roller coaster: You never know which way the car is going to go,” said Abby on the eve of the Granite State contest when it looked like her dad’s poll numbers were finally inching up into the solid double digits. “We think [social media] is crucially important for this election cycle, especially for our younger generation, so we’ve kind of run with it,” added Liddy, referring to such now-infamous bits as a YouTube send-up of former candidate Herman Cain’s “smoking” commercial and a Justin Timberlake remake promoting their dad. Despite his pledge to endorse Romney, just last week Huntsman referred to the former Massachusetts governor as “unelectable.” With Huntsman — who, like Romney, was vying to be the nation’s first Mormon president — out of the race, leading candidate Romney is now facing off against Paul, former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum, former House speaker Newt Gingrich and Texas Governor Rick Perry. Update: FAMU Band Director Julian White Says University Didn’t Help Him Get Hazing Situation Under Control

Oh, when legacies get tarnished… After almost fourty years at Florida A&M and 13 years as the school’s band director, Julian White was fired last week in the wake of the “Marching 100″ hazing scandal that left one student dead. And now he’s fighting back. FAMU president Dr. James Ammons announced Wednesday that the university would fire White in the wake of Champion’s death. A letter sent to White from Ammon’s office cited “alleged misconduct and/or incompetence involving confirmed reports and allegations of hazing.” “We weren’t able to stop it, and so that’s why we thought that the sanction was appropriate at this time,” Ammons told CNN. “While Dr. White has had a distinguished career in music education and administration within the university as director of bands, I did not feel there was competence involving reporting allegations of hazing within the Department of Music and the Marching 100,” Ammons told the Tallahassee Democrat. White has since hired an attorney, who is demanding the now-former director be reinstated. 11Alive obtained a letter sent by attorney Chuck Hobbs to Dr. Ammons, outlining White’s actions against hazing, but saying the school did not provide enough “support” for those efforts. “There has been little uniformity in discipline in the form of University-wide suspensions or expulsions,” the letter stated. White said Ammons gave him the choice to resign or be fired. Ammons, an FAMU graduate, became band director in 1998 and has been on the school’s music faculty for nearly 40 years. According to the Capitol News Service in Tallhassee, White is a union member, and the university will have to wait until Dec. 22 to actually separate him from the university, in order to give him enough time to respond. Ammons’ letter placed White on administrative leave with pay until the official Dec. 22 firing date. On Tuesday, Ammons announced that the school would form an independent task force to investigate Champion’s death, along with any “unauthorized activities” associated with the Marching 100. The school president said FAMU’s “band, staff, students and history” will all be subject to investigation. On Wednesday, Florida Gov. Rick Scott sent a letter to the commissioner of the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, Gerald Bailey, asking the FDLE to investigate Champion’s death and the circumstances surrounding it. Ammons told the Democrat that he was looking forward to the FDLE’s involvement in the case. “We want answers,” he told the Democrat. “I welcome FDLE to this investigation to get to the bottom of this.” Since Champion’s death Saturday, blogs and social media sites have been flooded with posts speculating that Champion’s death may be connected with hazing. Ammons has asked people to stop engaging in rumors, but also acknowleded that several band members have been released from the band this semester because of possible participation in hazing. “Hazing is illegal, and it’s something that should not happen,” he said. “I am committed to making certain that we end this practice.” In Florida, hazing is a third degree felony. Orange County Sheriff Jerry Demings has said he suspects hazing is involved in Champion’s death and that charges could be forthcoming. A FAMU student and former band member who asked not to be identified, told the Democrat that groups within the band haze as an initiation for new members. The student said there was a myriad of band fraternities and some have groups within groups. The student went on to say inter-band fraternities, including a clarinet section called “The Clones” and an Atlanta-based group called the “Red Dawgs Organization” are responsible for the majority of the hazing in the band. Do you think the University is using Dr. White as a scapegoat to make itself appear tougher on hazing than it really is? Source

Good Job, Dirt Dog: Democrat Anthony “Look At My” Weiner’s Congress Seat Now Belongs To A Republican

SMH… Republican Bob Turner, with voters dealing a rebuke to President Barack Obama in a traditionally Democratic district, won the New York City House seat that scandal forced Anthony Weiner to give up. The Associated Press reported that with 88 percent of the vote counted in yesterday’s special election, Turner had 54 percent and Democrat David Weprin had 46 percent. “I think it’s a big red flag,” Stu Rothenberg, editor of the Washington-based Rothenberg Political Report, said of the New York election results. “The ramifications go well beyond Queens and Brooklyn.” He called it “a warning sign that voters who are dissatisfied with the direction of the country may well be more likely to take it out on the president and his party than on congressional Republicans.” Rothenberg said Democrat Weprin “didn’t run a great race,” but “even a weak Democratic candidate should be able to hold it against a mediocre Republican.” Hope this isn’t a sign of what’s to come in 2012… Source

Happy 65th Birthday, Bill Clinton!

The 42nd President of the United States of America, Bill Clinton, celebrates his birthday today. The Big Dawg is now 65. Happy birthday, Bubba! William Jefferson Clinton, the pride of Hope, Ark., remains the only Democrat to win two full White House terms since Franklin Delano Roosevelt. He also presided over the largest peacetime economic expansion in U.S. history, and left office extremely popular despite being impeached. Hey, no one’s perfect, right? His wife, Hillary Clinton, is currently U.S. Secretary of State. Their daughter, Chelsea, married Marc Mezvinsky last summer in New York State. In a political flip-flop of Mitt Romney-esque proportions, Bill Clinton is marking his 65th birthday by going vegan. Seriously. No more burgers! What a difference a quadruple bypass makes. “I like the vegetables, the fruits, the beans, the stuff I eat now,” the ex-President tells CNN. After experiencing heart problems leading up to the 2004 surgery, Clinton has now lost 20 lbs.: “I feel good, and I have so much more energy.” Glad to hear. Have a veggie burger on us tonight, BC!
