As The Campaign Dawns, 10 Top Political Movies Position for Spotlight

“Obamacare.” “Romney Hood.” The political name-calling sounds like campaign season is well under-way (though does it ever end or begin?). The art of the possible will get a comical twist this weekend with the release of The Campaign , starring Will Ferrell and Zach Galifianakis. The pic follows two rivals who clash in an election that will decide who will head to the U.S. Congress from their North Carolina district (Ferrell appears to even flash a not-so-subtle coif similar to former V.P. candidate John Edwards). The film, which opens this weekend, prompted ABC’s Political Punch reporter Jake Tapper to offer up his Top 10 political films of all-time (documentaries were excluded) and “political film” was kept to a narrow definition. See if you agree with this list and let the campaign begin. 10. In The Loop , directed by Armando Iannucci (2009) Starring Tom Hollander, Peter Capaldi and James Gandolfini, the 2009 Sundance premiere is a satirical play on the build up to the war in Iraq and the relationship between the U.S. and the U.K. In the film both countries are on the verge of launching a Middle Eastern war and the story follows a behind-the-scenes drama in which there are officials trying to promote armed action and those trying to stop it. A British government minister tells a radio interviewer that war may be inevitable, but is then shot down by the Prime Minister’s aide, played by Peter Capaldi. But then, the aide himself makes a further mistake saying there may be a need to “climb the mountain of conflict,” further muddying a delicate situation. 9. The Parallax View , directed by Alan J. Pakula (1974) Based on the 1970 novel by Loren Singer, Warren Beatty plays a newspaper reporter who takes on a dangerous investigation into a corporation that engages in political assassination. Presidential candidate Senator Charles Carroll (Bill Joyce) is assassinated atop the Space Needle in Seattle and one witness, journalist Lee Carter (Paula Prentiss) tells her former boyfriend, reporter Joe Frady (Beatty) that she believes there is more to the killing since six of the witnesses have died and she fears she may be next. The Parallax View is the third in director Alan J. Pakula’s political paranoia trilogy including Klute (1971) and All the President’s Men (1976) (and also the only one not to receive an Oscar nomination or win). 8. Z , directed by Costa Gavras (1969) Also based on a novel, this time the 1966 book of the same title by Vassilis Vassilikos, the French political thriller is a vaguely fictionalized take on the events around the assassination of democratic Greek politician Grigoris Lambrakis in 1963. Starring Jean-Louis Trintignant as an investigator, the film combines dark humor and a satirical view of politics though it managed to be the 10th highest-grossing film of the year in the U.S. in 1969. It also received both an Oscar-nomination for Best Foreign Language Film and Best Picture. 7. Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb , directed by Stanley Kubrick (1964) Starring Peter Sellers, George C. Scott and Sterling Hayden this black comedy takes on the nuclear scare and the Cold War. Based on Peter George’s novel Red Alert , the story revolves around a rogue U.S. Air Force general who orders a nuclear assault on the Soviet Union. The President of the United States and his staff as well as a Royal Air Force officer attempt to return the planes as they head to deliver their apocalyptic payload, while separately the film follows the crew on one of the planes as it heads to its target. The U.S. Library of Congress called Dr. Strangelove “Culturally Significant” in 1989 and is preserved in the National Film Registry. 6. Bananas , directed by Woody Allen (1971) South American politics take the focus in this comedy in which Allen stars with Louise Lasser and Carlos Montalban. Allen plays Fielding Mellish, a bumbling blue collar guy who wants to impress his activist love interest Nancy (Lasser) by getting involved in a revolution in a fictional South American country. He shows concern for the locals, but after he’s nearly killed by a military chief, he is saved by the revolutionaries and he finds himself in their debt. Soon, he learns to be a revolutionary himself, but when the revolt succeeds and their Castro-esque leader goes mad, he inadvertently finds himself as their new top figure. Back in the U.S., he faces trial and he reunites with his love… 5. Mr. Smith Goes to Washington , directed by Frank Capra (1939) This classic has shown up on lists throughout the decades. Starring Jean Arthur and James Stewart and based on an unpublished story by Lewis R. Foster, the film proved a controversy when it was released back in ’39, but received 11 Academy Award nominations and a win for Best Original Story. The story revolves around an unnamed Western governor who by chance chooses Jefferson Smith (Stewart) to serve out a term in the U.S. Senate following the death of the sitting incumbent. The governor believes he’ll be able to manipulate the naive Smith. His good intentions soon collide with an apparatus of political corruption and then all hell breaks loose. 4. Charlie Wilson’s War , directed by Mike Nichols (2007) Aaron Sorkin adapted for the screenplay based on a true story by George Crile III’s 2003 book Charlie Wilson’s War: The Extraordinary Story of the Largest Covert Operation in History . The drama recounts how U.S. congressman Charlie Wilson, a Texas Democrat, played by Tom Hanks, teamed up with the C.I.A. to support the Afghan mujahideen during the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan. Also starring Julia Roberts, Philip Seymour Hoffman along with Amy Adams, Ned Beatty and Emily Blunt, Wilson’s political maneuvering and his allies in the spy agency’s Afghanistan task force results in the mujahideen being armed to the teeth complete with stinger missiles which can shoot down Soviet choppers. The result is a Soviet quagmire and ultimately a triumph for the mujahideen, but the unintended consequences imply an unwieldy Afghanistan that was left to fend for itself after the Soviet withdrawal. 3. Wag the Dog , directed by Barry Levinson (1997) This film came out before the Clinton/Monica Lewinsky scandal broke, though the film is often identified with it. The black comedy stars Dustin Hoffman and Robert DeNiro about a Washington spin-master who hires a Hollywood producer to create a fake war with Albania (of all places) in order to distract the electorate with a sex scandal just days before a presidential election. The caption at the beginning of the film says it all: “Why does the dog wag its tail? Because the dog is smarter than the tail. If the tail were smarter, it would wag the dog.” 2. All the President’s Men (1976) Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein The 1976 Oscar-winning political thriller is based on the non-fiction work of Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein, better known as the The Washington Post journalists who blew the lid off the Watergate scandal. Robert Redford and Dustin Hoffman play Woodward and Bernstein respectively. The crisis that ensued ended in the resignation of President Nixon, the first U.S. head of state to resign and the subsequent inauguration of Vice President Ford in 1974. 1. The Candidate , directed by Michael Ritchie (1972) Robert Redford also stars in this film about an unlikely and idealistic Democratic candidate from California. Bill McKay (Redford) is initially more interested in espousing his liberal views publicly than winning and decides to take to the campaign trail to vocalize his opinion since his challenger, the incumbent Republican is a given as the victor. McKay wins the party nomination, but then finds out he’s likely to be overwhelmingly trounced in the election. He figured he’d lose, but not by such a humiliating margin. So, in order to avoid embarrassment, he broadens his appeal by dousing his ardently liberal message resulting in a rise in the polls. He also appeals for his father’s help (a former governor) to endorse him since the media is speculating that his silence is a tacit thumbs up to the opposition. As the debate looms, more compromises are made and the result entrenches McKay in the political establishment. [ Sources: ABC News , Wikipedia ]

Hi Haters: Neo-Nazis And Black Conservatives Rally Support Around Chick-fil-A’s Stance On Gay Matrimony-dom

Chick-Fil-A Appreciation Day Huge Hit With Neo-Nazis And Black Conservatives So much for boycotts… Chick-Fil-A’s across the country were flooded Wednesday with support from chicken lovers who support Dan Cathy’s stance on gay matrimony-dom who came out to dine on the franchise’s “Appreciation Day”: American neo-Nazis and some top black conservatives have found rare common ground — over Chick-fil-A’s stand against gay marriage. The two sides rallied around “Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day,” during which patrons — and protesters — swarmed restaurants Wednesday in response to the company’s support for “the Biblical definition of the family unit.” Chick-fil-A president Dan Cathy’s recent comments have sparked a new front in the culture war over gay marriage, and led Democratic mayors Rahm Emanuel of Chicago and Tom Menino of Boston to declare that the company is not welcome in their cities. In response, ex-Arkansas Governor and 2008 GOP presidential candidate Mike Huckabee, now a Fox News host, called on viewers to eat at one of the fast-food joints Wednesday to show support. One member of the skinhead Internet forum Crew38 was already there, according to the SITE Monitoring service, which tracks extremists online. “I had Chick-fil-A today for lunch and it was delicious and non-gay … just how I like it,” one member wrote. Members of the Project 21 black leadership network, a branch of the conservative National Center for Public Policy Research, also backed Huckabee’s call to dine at Chick-fil-A. “Being against gay marriage is not being anti-gay,” said Project 21 member Demetrius Minor. “The last time I checked, Chick-fil-A wasn’t expressing a desire for gays not to eat at their restaurants or seek employment with them.” Both groups rapped the progressive left as hypocritical, alleging it espouses tolerance while not tolerating conflicting views. There’s just one Chick-fil-A in New York City — on the campus of New York University. Mayor Bloomberg, while not an opponent of gay marriage, has sided with civil libertarians, who argued that businesses have a First Amendment right to operate where they choose regardless of management’s opinions on social issues. More than 630,000 visitors pledged online to participate in Huckabee’s event, while his Facebook page included photos of lines snaking out of restaurants around the country. The privately held company would not, however, share sales figures for the day, Chick-fil-A spokeswoman Hannah Wagner told the Daily News. The company issued a statement Tuesday asserting its Bible-derived values but adding: “Going forward, our intent is to leave the policy debate over same-sex marriage to the government and political arena.” How long do you think this back and forth will continue? What side do you stand on? Do you agree that the left has been hypocritical in not allowing the other side to express their views freely? Source Photo Credit: Twitter

Mitt Romney’s ‘Bane’ Problem, and Ours

Good morning! By which I mean just go back to bed : “‘Bane’ is the terrorist in the new movie who drives the caped crusader out of semi-retirement in the final Batman movie . Democrats, who believe they have Romney on the ropes over the president’s assault on his leadership at Bain Capital, said the comparisons are too rich to ignore. ‘It has been observed that movies can reflect the national mood,’ said Democratic advisor and former Clinton aide Christopher Lehane. ‘Whether it is spelled Bain and being put out by the Obama campaign or Bane and being out by Hollywood, the narratives are similar: a highly intelligent villain with offshore interests and a past both are seeking to cover up who had a powerful father and is set on pillaging society,’ he added.” [ Washington Examiner via Big Hollywood ]

Hi Hater: Former Obama Professor Says The President And His ‘Food Stamp Policy’ Politics Gotta Go

They smile in your face…. Former Professor of President Obama Not Supporting His Re-election Campaign In the latest NOBama news , a former professor of President Obama has come out of the woodwork to voice his non-support. One of President Obama’s former Harvard professors is calling for the president’s defeat in November, releasing a scathing video in which he accuses the president of abandoning America’s workers while pushing a policy of “food stamps.” The video by Brazilian scholar and politician Roberto Unger serves as an indictment of both parties. But in it, Unger says Obama must be defeated in order for the Democratic Party to restore itself “as the vehicle for the progressive alternative in the country.” Obama, he said, has not advanced that cause. “President Obama must be defeated in the coming election. He has failed to advance the progressive cause in the United States,” he said in the eight-minute video, titled “Beyond Obama.” Obama, when he attended Harvard, took two classes with Unger — Jurisprudence and Reinventing Democracy, according to David Remnick’s book “The Bridge: The Life and Rise of Barack Obama.” Unger continued to correspond with Obama via BlackBerry going into the presidential campaign, Remnick reported, though Unger said he never became Obama’s “friend” and kept his distance from the then-candidate out of concern that Unger’s own “leftist” leanings might do “harm” to Obama. All of these “food stamp” references are so unnecessary.  SMH. Source Image via Wenn

Interstate Hate: The Shady Azz State Of Georgia Konsiders Klan Application To “Do Something Positive” By Adopting A Stretch Of Highway

You can’t be serious… The Klan Applies To Adopt A Highway In North Georgia The Ku Klux Klan has applied to adopt a stretch of highway in northern Georgia, setting off a battle between a state representative condemning the application and the group’s ardent but anonymous leaders. “The state of Georgia is absolutely shameful in even considering an application from the KKK,” Democratic Georgia State Representative Tyrone Brooks told ABCNews.com. “If the state will accept an application from the KKK, we may as well get ready to accept applications from the Nazi party, Taliban, Al Qaeda and Aryan Nation.” The group, the International Keystone Knights of the KKK, denied Brooks’ comments. “What we’re trying to do is something positive and this Tyrone Brooks is trying to raise a stink about it. We just want to do something good for the community,” a representative of the KKK group, who would only agree to be identified as the “Imperial Wizard,” told ABCNews.com. The man was adamant that his real name not be used, in order to protect his job and family, he said. “[Brooks is] coming out and calling the Klan a terrorist organization. Prove it in black and white that the U.S. government has labeled us a terrorist organization,” the Imperial Wizard said. “Prove it. He needs to prove it. I challenge him.” When attempting to defend the Klan’s history of violence and hate the “Grand Wizard” says: “I’m a separatist. I’m not a racist. I believe in the separation of the races. It was originally printed in the Bible.” *Side-eyes this fool AND the state of Georgia* Image via AP Source

Black Congressman Artur Davis Switches From Democratic To GOP…”I Can’t Support Barack Obama” [Video]

Artur Davis Switches From Democratic Party For GOP The political conversion of Artur Davis made national headlines as the former Democratic congressman from Birmingham announced his decision to become a Republican in Virginia. The GOP welcomed Davis, once a top surrogate to President Barack Obama. “The fact that he has the courage to analyze the problems with the current administration on the issues of unifying diverse interests in America and creating jobs tells me this is a guy with a lot of principle,” Virginia Gov. Robert McDonnell, a Republican, told the Washington Post. In Alabama, where Davis suffered a painful loss in his 2010 bid for governor , leading Democrats had a different view. “In defeat, we have seen the real Artur Davis — a man with no principles, and no understanding of what it means to be a statesman and public servant,” said state Rep. Craig Ford, D-Gadsden, the House Minority Leader. “Artur Davis has no principles, and will say anything to advance his own career.” Conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh said Davis can expect plenty of abuse from Democrats as a result of his switch. “Some people are being cynical and are saying, ‘Well, he’s just doing an Arlen Specter. He’s just switching parties because he knows he can’t win as a Democrat,’” Limbaugh said on his radio show Thursday. “I don’t care. I listen to what he’s saying. This is an African-American who is setting himself up for Uncle Tom status. This guy is going to join the ranks of Thomas Sowell, Clarence Thomas and Shelby Steele. He’s going to be persona non grata in the Democrat Party.” Peep Davis’ reasons for his switch and discuss… Source

Hoes Gotta Eat Too: Rielle Hunter Writing Tell-All About Torrid Affair With John Edwards

Superhead ain’t got nothin’ on her! SMH… John Edwards’ baby mama is about to get that paper! Rielle Hunter, the mother of John Edwards’ love child and the woman with whom he conducted a scandalous affair, is about to publish a memoir, “What Really Happened: John Edwards, Our Daughter and Me.” (Photos: AP) The news was announced on Friday, one day after Edwards was found not guilty of funneling about $1 million from his 2008 presidential run to Hunter through Andrew Young, a loyal campaign staffer. The jury deadlocked on five other counts, and the judge ruled a mistrial. According to People magazine, which first reported on the book, Hunter’s memoir will be published in on June 26 by the boutique press BenBella Books. Said the company’s president, Glenn Yeffeth, “We are delighted to publish Rielle Hunter’s memoir. A lot has been said. But no one has heard the truth of what really happened until now.” Readers will surely be curious about how the 80′s party girl who is featured in the novels of literary Brat Packers Jay McInerney and Bret Easton Ellis tells her own tale. That tale is a long one. Hunter was born Lisa Jo Druck to a Florida lawyer who ran a horse farm. After dropping out of college in the mid-80′s, she moved to New York, where she dated McInerney. She would appear in his 1988 novel “Story of My Life,” where Alison Poole, the character obviously based on Hunter, is portrayed as “an ostensibly jaded, yayo-addled, sexually voracious 20-year-old.” Poole also appears in Ellis’ “American Psycho” and “Glamorama.” Later, Druck moved to Los Angeles, where she married the lawyer “Kip” Hunter III in 1991, changing her name to Rielle Hunter three years later. She divorced her husband in 2000. In the intervening years, she became involved in Internet videography, rising to some prominence in the field. Supposedly, she met Edwards, then a rising star in the Democratic Party, at the Regency Hotel in New York in 2006, pitching herself as a potential campaign videographer. She would become that and much, much more. rielle-hunter-300_0.jpegThe rest of it is most sordid history, and most of it already relayed in “Game Change,” the 2010 book about the 2008 presidential campaign by John Heilemann and Mark Halperin. In it, they describe Edwards’ increasing and increasingly irrational infatuation with the loopy Hunter, even as his wife Elizabeth is dying of breast cancer. It fell to the National Enquirer to first reveal their affair in 2007, leading to near-endless denials from Edwards, despite mounting evidence against him. Edwards made incomplete admissions starting in the summer of 2008, finally fessing up to fathering a child with Hunter in 2010. His wife died shortly thereafter. One of the juicer moments in Hunter’s book will probably be her response to the revelation that Edwards called her a “crazy slut” to Young in 2007 after being informed that he was the father of the child now known as Quinn. It is not clear how much the book will touch on her intriguing pre-Edwards years. SMH at this broad sloring out her story. This ish is about to be a bestseller. Will you buy it??? Source
