Obama Backers In New Hampshire Ask: ‘Why Are You In?’

‘I’m in because he brought the troops home,’ read one poster in the Obama campaign office in Manchester. By Gil Kaufman, with reporting by Sway Calloway Obama supporters in New Hampshire Photo: Getty Images MANCHESTER, New Hampshire — “I’m in because we are the change we’ve been waiting for.” “I’m in because I want my grandchildren to know what polar bears are.” “I’m in because the power is in the voice of the youth.” Those are a few of the handwritten signs penned by volunteers for the Obama 2012 re-election as part of a “Why Are You In?” wall aimed at inspiring them to get out the vote during Tuesday’s (January 10) primary. While most of the attention has been focused on the squabbling among the Republican White House hopefuls in the Granite State, as in last week’s Iowa caucus , the Obama team here has been hard at work training volunteers, making calls and reaching out to the state’s legendary independent voters and committed Democrats to remind them to come out on Tuesday. It’s part of an effort to keep the president’s supporters fired up and ready to go for the general election in November, and 19-year-old volunteer Kathieya Odiah said the chance to see how a campaign works has been eye-opening. “The Obama campaign is basically about having volunteers and having a grassroots campaign, so when we have volunteers come in we always have them make posters and notes about why they come here for Obama,” said Odiah, one of a number of Quinnipiac University students who will spend several weeks of their winter break working for Obama 2012. She pointed to one of the signs she wrote, “I’m in because he brought troops home,” explaining that she felt strongly about the president ending the war in Iraq. The Manchester office, the largest of seven such locations around the state, has housed hundreds of volunteers over the past few months, and during a visit from MTV’s Power of 12 team on Tuesday afternoon, young volunteers were sprawled on couches, on the floor and across several rooms as they clutched their call sheets and reached out to remind voters to make it to the polls before they closed at 8 p.m. Her friend and fellow volunteer, Long Island, New York’s Morgan Farra, 20, said she’s in because the president has helped make college affordable for students like her by increasing the number of Pell grant recipients by 3 million so far. “It’s really important to me because if you don’t have an education, you’re missing out on one of the greatest experiences of your life,” she said. Inspired by the unprecedented grassroots campaign run by Obama in 2008, 19-year-old Natalie Deduck said she has been putting in the 10 to 12-hour days at the Manchester office because she knows the importance of starting early and strong in order to rally the troops again. Jameson Cherilus, 22, is typical of the office’s volunteers. He started his day around 8 a.m. outside an elementary school, where he held up signs for the president and reminded primary voters that Obama was on the ballot before hitting the office for a long day of phone calls. “I’m here because President Obama supports small business,” read another sign that shouted out Flanders Fish Market in East Lyme, Connecticut. “It’s been pretty hard getting my … friends involved in the campaign [because] they honestly don’t understand how important it is to start now even though it’s only January,” said Odiah about the challenges she’s faced while making calls in Manchester and speaking to her peers about what she’s doing. “We have to explain to people that we need to start now. [Once] Republicans choose who they’re going to have for their candidate, they’re already going to have half of the votes. … Yeah, [Obama’s] going to win the primary, but this is a dry run. This is our way of knowing this is what it’s going to look like in November. It’s hard.” MTV is on the scene in New Hampshire! Rob Lowe to Replace Regis Philbin on Live?

Regis Philbin’s replacement on ABC could be Rob Lowe, reports say. Lowe just finished a two-day stint guest hosting with Kelly Ripa and an ABC source says the top network brass “loved the chemistry between them.” Network executives have spoken with Lowe’s reps about making it a permanent gig, but Lowe, who stars on Parks and Recreation , is non-committal. There’s a big surprise. One of the more itinerant actors around, Lowe has departed in the middle of numerous programs’ runs in pursuit of other projects. Rob was just asked by TMZ whether he’s moving to New York. He said: “We were just talking about that. I love New York. I love the energy. It would be a change of pace. I’m a California boy, but it could be fun.” Thoughts? Rob Lowe replacing Regis Philbin …

John McCain Mistakenly Endorses President Obama

Honest mistake or Freudian slip? Sen. John McCain mixed up Barack Obama and Republican candidate Mitt Romney, who he endorsed this week , in a campaign appearance on the latter’s behalf. Speaking on Romney’s behalf in South Carolina, the 2008 GOP nominee opined that he has little doubt President Obama will get the country going again. Pretty funny. McCain Mixes Up Obama, Romney

Nephew of Rick Santorum: Vote Ron Paul!

Former U.S. Senator Rick Santorum catapulted himself to the top tier of the Republican presidential race this week, losing the Iowa caucus by just eight votes. With newly-minted contender status comes increased scrutiny, however. Santorum was booed off stage in New Hampshire yesterday for comments about gay marriage. Not everyone in his own family is convinced he’s up to the task, either. This week his nephew penned an editorial for the Daily Caller in support of … Ron Paul. “If you want another big-government politician who supports the status quo to run our country, you should vote for my uncle, Rick Santorum,” John Garver writes. Garver, a 19-year-old student at the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown, continues: “America is based on a strong belief in individual liberty. My uncle’s interventionist policies, both domestic and foreign, stem from his irrational fear of freedom not working . It is not the government’s job to dictate to individuals how they must live. The Constitution was designed to protect individual liberty. My Uncle Rick cannot fathom a society in which people cooperate and work with each other freely. When Republicans were spending so much money under President Bush, my uncle was right there along with them as a senator. The reason we have so much debt is not only because of Democrats, but also because of big-spending Republicans like my Uncle Rick. It is because of this inability of status quo politicians to recognize the importance of our individual liberties that I have been drawn to Ron Paul. Unlike my uncle, he does not believe the American people are incapable of forming decisions. He believes that an individual is more powerful than any group (a notion our founding fathers also believed in). Another important reason I support Ron Paul is his position on foreign policy. He is the only candidate willing to bring our troops home, not only from the Middle East, but from around the world. Ron Paul seems to be the only candidate trying to win the election for a reason other than simply winning the election. This year, I’ll vote for an honest change in our government. I’ll vote for real hope. I’ll vote for a real leader. This year, I will vote for Ron Paul.” The candidates square off, along with frontrunner Mitt Romney , in debates Saturday night and Sunday morning in New Hampshire, which holds its primary Tuesday. Expect fireworks.

MTV’s Power Of 12 Headed To New Hampshire

Sway Calloway tells CBS’ ‘Early Show’ about MTV’s New Hampshire primary coverage and election-year plans. By Gil Kaufman Sway Calloway on CBS’ “The Early Show” Photo: CBS News MTV News already showed you some of the Power of 12 on Tuesday in Iowa when we spoke to a number of poll-goers about their choices in that first-in-the-nation presidential caucus. And our young voter initiative will continue on next Tuesday as we descend on New Hampshire for the first primary of the season. This time, our correspondent Sway Calloway will be on hand to speak to voters about what issues are on their minds, which candidates are likely to get their vote and what they’re looking for from their leaders as campaign 2012 heats up. Sway dropped in on CBS’ “Early Show” on Friday (January 6) to talk up the initiative, telling reporters Nancy Cordes and Jim Axelrod why the nation’s 45 million millennial (18-29) voters could hold the key to this year’s contest. “They can help set the agenda,” Sway said. “It’s about the individual vote and, collectively, they could change the whole entire election. We’ve seen this in the past, just four year ago. That’s what the Power of 12 is all about.” And that’s the reason, he said, why MTV created the Power of 12 hub as a clearinghouse for information on voting and a resource for young voters to get information and become informed about the issues. A continuation of MTV’s two-decade-plus commitment to political engagement, the Power of 12 initiative is an updated way to engage a new generation in the importance of political participation. “The Power of 12 is about now. It’s about 2012. It’s about this generation who are experiencing a different economic climate, as well as political climate,” Sway explained. “A lot of young Americans are feeling disillusioned, but they’re not disengaged with the political process. We saw the turnout with Occupy Wall Street . But when I go out in the streets and I talk to young potential voters, some of their concerns are student loans, how to pay for college and coming out of college and not having jobs.” It remains to be seen whether young voters will come out to support the remaining Republican candidates in New Hampshire. But in Iowa they showed up loud and proud for libertarian Ron Paul , even if voters under 30 only ended up representing 4 percent of the total vote in the Hawkeye state. Asked whether those voters will turn out for incumbent president Barack Obama they way they did in 2008, Sway said that while Obama still has the highest approval rating among that group for Democrats, “young voters will definitely set the agenda. If the candidates are wise, it would behoove them to tap into this ‘Power of 12’ and utilize this power and talk to this young vote.” Check back here around the clock for up-to-the-minute coverage on the primary caucuses and stick with PowerOf12.org throughout the 2012 presidential election season.
