T.I.’s No Mercy: An Album Guide

Released as he serves an 11-month prison bid, Tip confronts his demons on introspective new LP. By Jayson Rodriguez T.I. Photo: Moses Robinson/ WireImage When T.I. announced after his release from prison earlier this year that his next album would be titled King Uncaged, the Atlanta rapper explained that the project would touch on his time behind bars but also hark back to the themes of his earlier material, which leaned heavily on street narratives. However, when he was arrested again in October — and subsequently sentenced to 11 months in prison — Tip reconfigured the album, including a title change. No Mercy arrived in stores and online on Tuesday (December 7). If the LP’s new name doesn’t convey the sentiment of the project, the content certainly does. Throughout No Mercy, T.I. is equal parts repentant about his mistakes but also fiery as he attacks his detractors, accusing them of turning their backs on him during hard times that have included two jail stints in less than 12 months’ time. “No Mercy” On the title track featuring The-Dream, Tip strikes a good balance, looking in the mirror while also turning it around on those who can’t see past his success, where he says he’s actually battling demons. “There’s no mercy for me, no crying myself to sleep,” The-Dream sings in his airy falsetto. “No mercy for me/ Nightmares have become my dreams.” “His wife and sons and daughter know that every day he tried to be a better person,” Tip raps over the measured production. “All they want is better verses/ To market to the merchants/ But when it’s closed curtains …” “Get Back Up” The theme of clemency continues on “Get Back Up” featuring Chris Brown . The sprightly number is loaded with rhymes that lash out against the media and blogs, among others, but the lyrics are conveyed in melodic tones, hushing the vitriol. The Atlanta MC, though, also shows signs of accepting responsibility for his faults, behavior that he carried over from his days in the trap: “I admit, yeah, I done some dumb sh–,” he raps in the song. “Disappointed everybody, I know/ Try not to hold that against me, though/ My road to redemption has no GPS/ So guess time must be invested for this to be manifested/ Yes, it’s hard living life in the spotlight/ Trying to dodge the haters the same time as the cop light/ The Bible says let he without sin cast the stone first/ The sinners are the ones that judge him, who was wrong first?” “Welcome to This World” No Mercy isn’t all gloom. T.I. is still an exceptional MC, and he holds his own lyrically with a list of guests that would excite a five-star hotel manager. On the brooding “Welcome to This World,” featuring Kanye West and Kid Cudi, Tip and ‘Ye trade boastful verses about the high-life. “She coming home with me, she finnin’ meet her doom,” Tip spits. “She ain’t saying I’m the greatest, finnin’ to change her tune/ The coldest and the hottest, call me December and June/ Deliver euphoria straight to your room.” “All She Wrote” On “All She Wrote,” Tip and Eminem swap bars about spending time with the wrong woman. “Poppin’ Bottles ” After jumping on Drake’s breakout 2010 track “Fancy,” the Toronto MC reunites with Tip for “Poppin’ Bottles,” a woozy strip-club anthem. “Amazing” And “Amazing” is a bottom-heavy banger, courtesy of the Neptunes, that also finds Tip setting aside the album’s weightier themes. But the best work on No Mercy stems from Tip dealing with adversity . The rapper admitted to a pill addiction in a Vibe magazine cover story and recently penned a blog on his personal website confessing that he’s “sick and tired” of being in and out of prison “Castle Walls” He teams with Christina Aguilera for the deeply personal “Castle Walls.” It’s here that Tip confronts the consequences of his actions; a captivating documentation of this chapter in his life. “Honestly, to me, I think I lose every benefit/ Of all that I’ve accomplished if my kids never win at sh–,” he raps. “Me knowing this, why should the verse I laid/ Be more important to me than the persons I raised? “I guess I’m saying that to say that opportunity today,” Tip continues. “Don’t equate to all the time it takes away from your kids.” What do you think of T.I.’s No Mercy ? Taylor Swift’s ‘Mine’ Recalls Other Pop-Culture Love Stories

Taylor’s flash forward calls up images from ‘The Notebook,’ Guns N’ Roses videos and more. By Jocelyn Vena Taylor Swift and Toby Hemingway in “Mine” Photo: Big Machine Records Taylor Swift’s “Mine” video, directed by Roman White, travels forward in time as it tells a love story from beginning to end. But in its imagery, the clip also goes back in time, referencing some familiar moments in pop culture. Kelly Clarkson’s “Because of You” : When Swift’s character remembers the fights her parents used to have, her memories mirror Clarkson’s attempts to exorcise the demons of her past to find love in her future. “The Notebook” : Granted, any time fans of chick flicks see two good-looking people very much in love, they think of “The Notebook.” And like Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams, Swift and her love interest, played by Toby Hemingway, spent some romantic time in a boat. “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” : “Mine” plays some head games with its viewers, and fantasy and reality are sometimes hard to distinguish from one another — much like the dreamlike ups and downs of the love affair between Joel Barish (Jim Carrey) and Clementine Kruczynski (Kate Winslet) in Michel Gondry’s 2004 flick. “November Rain” : The fact that Taylor’s wedding scene reminds us of that great scene in the Guns N’ Roses video when Stephanie Seymour and Axl Rose emerge from the church is maybe a bit unsettling. “Love the Way You Lie” : Much like in the recent Eminem and Rihanna video, Taylor and Toby have an epic fight in a kitchen. At least they’re less dysfunctional than Dominic and Megan. Britney Spears’ Fantasy : Brit’s perfume ad features the same “flash into the future” structure after the pop star in question locks eyes with a would-be suitor. Taylor Swift videos : Yeah, Swift even references herself in “Mine.” The video’s loose definition of time and space recalls her “Romeo and Juliet”-inspired clip for “Love Story” and her VMA-nominated “Fifteen.” This time, however, Taylor’s growing up, not looking back. What pop-culture references have you spotted in Taylor Swift’s “Mine”? Talk about it in the comments. Related Videos Taylor Swift’s ‘Mine’ Premieres Related Artists Taylor Swift

Harvey Pekar: In His Own Words

MTV News caught up with the late comics icon last September. By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Rick Marshall Harvey Pekar Photo: Evan Agostini/ Getty Images “American Splendor” author Harvey Pekar died early Monday (July 12) at the age of 70, leaving behind a voluminous exploration of his grumpy musings and everyman life experiences, his anxieties and his foibles, his pals and his demons. Pekar’s comics, illustrated by the likes of legend R. Crumb, were like a mid-’70s version of a blog, an almost living journal in which the author committed every triumph and every indignity to the page. He toiled as an underground comic for years, popping up every so often on “Late Night With David Letterman” for memorably disastrous appearances. Then in 2003, Paul Giamatti played Pekar in the Sundance-winning, Oscar-nominated biopic “American Splendor,” and Pekar’s work went from cult object to well-known commodity. Last September, MTV News had the opportunity to chat with Pekar as he launched “The Pekar Project,” a new webcomic series. As we look back and celebrate the life and work of a true artist, here is Harvey Pekar in his own words: On His Writing Process : “It’s real easy for me to write a lot of stories. I just go and I live through something and I go home and write about it. It’s that quick.” On Artistic Innovation : “I’d like to see the comics’ style expanded. I’d like to see artists synthesize traditional comics arts style with fine-arts styles or whatever. I like to see innovation. I don’t like it when an art form becomes stagnant.” On Writing His Own Webcomics : “It’s not that I got anything against technology. It’s that technology has something against me. I have nothing against [publishing] stuff on the computer, even though I can’t use one. … I’ve just been writing stuff as it comes to me. I haven’t thought as, ‘Let me write some kind of a major opus.’ I want to see what happens. I’ll stand behind what I did.” On Comics Writers Turning to the Internet : “I think it was meant to be. When the Internet came about, that was the logical place for everyone to turn. If you look at blogs, a lot of them are memoirs or opinion pieces — stuff that’s been done in the past. Blogs are fairly short, and they’re used on the Internet. I don’t think the content of a lot of the blogs is very different. I think the medium is different, and you’re able to reach huge audiences with a minimal amount of spending.” On His Love of Jazz : “Jazz is in a very, very precarious situation right now. A respectable-sized audience hasn’t really been able to follow developments in jazz since the free jazz movement in the ’60s. Some of them can’t even get with John Coltrane. Audiences are diminishing more and more rapidly. Some of the top young musicians with something new to say can’t get record companies to put out their stuff. Jazz won’t die exactly. Jazz musicians are all going to be playing old music if they want to make a living at it, like what Wynton Marsalis is doing.” Share your memories of Harvey Pekar’s work in the comments below.

Howard Stern’s sidekick Artie Lange hospitalized after suicide attempt

Stand-up comic, published author and co-star of The Howard Stern radio show Artie Lange was quietly rushed to the hospital Sunday night . At that time, there was no further explanation and Stern remained tight-lipped about it on his show. But now, Page Six is reporting that the troubled comedian, who has a long history of drug and alcohol abuse, gambling addiction and depression, tried to commit suicide by cutting himself nine times. Troubled comic Artie Lange landed in the hospital after stabbing himself nine times in an apparent suicide attempt, sources told The Post. Lange’s frantic mom called 911 Saturday morning after she entered his Hoboken apartment and found the bloodied funnyman, a law-enforcement source said. Lange sustained six “hesitation wounds” and three deep plunges. A source close to Lange’s management team confirmed that the Howard Stern sidekick stabbed himself, adding that his mother had come to visit him that day to drop off food. Surgeons managed to save Lange despite heavy bleeding. “We all have our demons,” Stern said on-air this week, referring to Lange’s past battles with addiction. “Artie has given this show tremendous moments of great comedy. He’s a tremendous contributor. He is a good man. Don’t forget how great he is.” [From Page Six] Lange is a textbook example of a “Crying on the inside” comedian. Love him or hate him, this is pretty darn sad. Stabbing yourself is a desperate act, indicative of someone at the end of their rope. Anyone who listens to the show knows that Artie has been in a bad way for quite some time, but hasn’t been ready to do the work needed to stay off drugs, treat his depression and take better care of himself. At least, not for more than a couple of weeks at a time. I hope he takes some time off and focuses on his mental and physical health. Jennifer Aniston Shows Off her Lonely Old Legs of the Day

The funny thing about Jennifer Aniston is that she’s not that ugly for a 40 year old, but she just can’t land a husband, or someone willing to knock her up and that makes me laugh. She’s a typical cunt who thinks she’s got so much going on that she’s too good for the average dude who is into her. So she runs after these Brad Pitt replacements that constantly reject her because with bitches with high standards, comes high maintenance and when you’re just fucking her because you’ve wanted to since you saw her on friends, you realize that it’s not worth the fucking headaches, so bitch ends up alone cuz even with all the rejection, she still thinks she’s too good to get with dudes who would actually put up with her bullshit….The good news is that there will always be cats to keep her company and fill her big empty house when she stops getting work and is forced to face her demons with no distractions a few years down the road. That’s when she’ll be good for moving in on, like the old maids in my neighborhood who couldn’t have kids cuz they had their uterus removed thanks to cancer caused by their careers as prostitutes, a career that made marriage a fantasy…. Sarah Palin and her association with NAR. "Everyone but Christians understands that Jesus was nonviolent." Mahatma Gandhi.

Researcher Rachel Tabachnick, reported regarding NAR videos that they “demonstrate the taking control of communities and nations through large networks of ‘prayer warriors’ whose spiritual warfare is used to expel and destroy the demons that cause societal ills. Once the territorial demons, witches, and generational curses are removed, the ‘born-again’ Christians in the videos take control of society.” “The movement’s notion of “spiritual warfare” has spread from the California suburbs to an East-Coast inner city, and has impacted policy decisions in the developing world. Movement operatives are well-connected enough to have testified before Congress and to have received millions of dollars in government abstinence-only sex-education grants. Leaders in the NAR movement refer to themselves as ‘apostles.’”[1] When Palin was 24, she joined a spiritual warfare network. Rachel Tabachnick, continues: “These communication networks allow apostles to disseminate new prophecy to their ‘prayer warriors.’ During the presidential election this included prophecies about Palin, including one in which Glazier described a vision that Palin would take the ‘mantle’ of leadership after a period of national mourning, apparently following John McCain’s demise. “The first Transformation film so impressed pastors in Wasilla, Alaska, that they contacted some of the religious leaders featured in the movie including Thomas Muthee, who was shown driving a witch out of Kiambu, Kenya. Wasilla Assembly of God developed an ongoing relationship with Muthee and a 2005 church video shows him anointing Palin. Unfortunately the press picked up on the witch part of the story, and not the more important fact that Palin has ties to top leaders of the New Apostolic Reformation. “I believe this movement’s threat to separation of church and state is greater than some of the more overtly theocratic movements of the religious right. The inclusion of women and all races in leadership roles, and their enthusiastic sponsorship of social services conflicts with a popular notion about religious fundamentalism. Despite their radical strategies, leaders in the movement have been labeled in the press as moderate…a ‘new evangelical.’ I have written on this topic a number of times in the past and believe it is very important and frightening information that should be read and understood by as many people as possible. This is a very well written and researched post that will have the hairs on the back of your neck standing on end. Please click the title to read the entire article. My friend Leah Burton, from “God’s Own Party”, should have returned from her speaking engagement and be back at the keyboard in the next day or so, and I trust she will have much to add on this topic as well.
