Then, after she reported it to her department, they blew her off. “We have to change something in this department,” she said. “It’s not OK, but sexual harassment happens in this department every day. As women and as cops, we get tough skins and shrug it off, but it’s not going to happen this time.” Yesenia Maida says the bottle was discovered by a 12-year-old girl stopped by to help clean out her office, which was mortifying. “I couldn’t believe it,you couldn’t make up that something like this happened. I feel extremely violated and fear for my safety at the precinct,” Maida, 44, a youth officer at the 52nd Precinct in Norwood, explained. “I’m going into work, looking around and thinking, who could have this to me?” The married mother of two — whose husband works in the same precinct — reported it the next day and claims she almost immediately got pushback from the Internal Affairs Bureau, who she said declined to investigate at first. “They’re telling me that someone ejaculates or puts some foreign substance in my water bottle at a police facility and nothing is going to get done about it?” she said. “I was very upset.” After some pressure from Maida’s commanding officer, Deputy Inspector Thomas Alps, IAB launched an investigation and took the water bottle to be tested. So far the issue has not been resolved. SMH.
EXCLUSIVE: He thought the mailman was coming with a tax return check, instead state and local authorities delivered a warrant on a South Fulton County teen accused of using online business to steal bank accounts, scam the state of Georgia out of more than $20 million @wsbtv at 6 pic.twitter.com/TSiddhHcwh — Nicole Carr (@NicoleCarrWSB) December 6, 2018 Credit cards and the scammers… Charles Turner Arrested For Fraud A Georgia teen who ran an elaborate scammy scheme is behind bars. WSBTV reports that Charles Turner, 18, was on a secret crime spree; making several high-dollar fraudulent transactions, both online and through banks ranging from $14,000 to a whopping $28 million. The teen was arrested this week at his Riverdale, Georgia home while he was waiting on a check he scammed from the State Department of Revenue. Turner’s scam centered around Riverdale X, an electronics business website that “sold” Amazon products for an upcharge. He used customer info to steal their bank account info then used that information to make payments to the Department of Revenue and to pay his car payments. Investigators recently noticed that something seemed off about the money Turner was paying the state on a daily basis that ended up being reversed due to fraud and insufficient funds. Josh Waites, an investigator with the Georgia Department of Revenue told WSBTV exactly how scammy Charles masterminded his plan. “He actually set up a business, set up withholding accounts and sales tax accounts and was overpaying by more than $25 million onto those accounts and then requesting refunds for those same amounts to be returned back to him in his personal checking account,” Waites explained. Last month he finagled himself into an $18,000 payment from a SunTrust Bank using a fraudulent check. The salacious scammer’s mother and brother were home when he was arrested and they, OF COURSE, told investigators that they had NO IDEA what was going on. When he was arrested, however, one of the four cars in the family’s driveway was seized. What do YOU think about this teenager’s fraud scam???
S an Mateo County Sheriff’s Department is trying to cover up for its officers who were involved in the October Taser killing of unarmed Chinedu Valentine Okobi , a 36-year-old father and Morehouse College graduate, according to Okobi’s sister. See Also: Cover-up? Police Narrative Of Jemel Roberson’s Killing Contradicts Eyewitnesses’ Ebele Okobi took to Facebook on Sunday after she and other family members had a private viewing late last week of the police arrest videos, the San Francisco Chronicle reported. The police videos “were shocking because they contradicted, in every single particular, the statement that the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office released and to which San Mateo District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe referred in multiple news outlets after my brother’s murder,” said Okobi, Facebook’s public policy director for Africa, in her post . On Oct. 3, the sheriff’s department reported that an officer confronted Chinedu Okobi running in and out of traffic in the city of Millbrae. He allegedly assaulted a deputy who called for backup. Four other officers responded, and at least one of the officers killed Okobi with a Taser. There are at least two other videos of the arrest, recorded by witnesses, that also contradict the sheriff’s department’s narrative of Chinedu Okobi being aggressive, the family said. They are urging the department to release its video to the public. P hiladelphia’s police commissioner, who’s Black, rejected a report released on Monday that said police racial bias was instrumental in the controversial arrest of two Black men at Starbucks in April. However, many studies point to implicit bias as an ongoing policing problem. SEE ALSO: Starbucks Incident Prompts Philadelphia Police Department To Finally Try De-escalation In Trespass Cases The Police Advisory Commission, comprised of a citizen oversight board, urged police officials to improve officer implicit bias training, the Philadelphia Inquirer reported. “The goal for us was to help everyone understand that issues can be nuanced and tinged with race, or affected by race and racism, and the Police Department, often, is the person at the front lines of all of our issues,” said Hans Menos , executive director of the commission. That didn’t go over well with Philadelphia Commission Richard Ross , who pointed out in a statement that his department bans racially biased policing. “We can agree that biases, whether implicit or explicit, may distort the fears and perception of some citizens who call the police to report crimes,” he stated, shifting the blame to citizens who call the police for help. When they refused to leave, a store manager called the police, who led them out of the store in handcuffs. No charges were filed, and Starbucks profusely apologized for the incident. Starbucks also closed its stores in May for an afternoon of employee anti-bias training. Studies have determined that suspicion and fear of Black men underpin police brutality and make for disproportionate arrests. Unconsciously, white people perceive Black men as larger and more threatening than white men of the same build, according to the American Psychological Association . Stereotypes of Black men as habitual criminals and dangerous people are reinforced through the media, the American Bar Association said. A national survey found that whites overestimated the percentage of Blacks involved in burglaries, drug sales and juvenile crime by up to 30 percent. Police officers bring those attitudes with them, often unconsciously, when policing Black communities. Police departments across the nation are struggling to help their officers eliminate their bias. M any activists paying attention to the treatment of Laquan McDonald ‘s shooting know that this case is still ongoing. A guilty verdict has come against Chicago police officer Jason Van Dyke but other city department officers involved in the shooting were expected to soon face their judgment days. RELATED: ‘ Laquan McDonald Deserved Protection:’ National Black Police Association Reacts To Jason Van Dyke Conviction However, what will happen after Van Dyke’s moment of truth is rather clear: the 40-year-old man who jurors found guilty of second-degree murder and 16 counts of aggravated battery with a firearm after killing the 17-year-old teenager nearly four years ago will face countless years in prison. The former cop, who was being held in solitary lock up at Rock Island County Jail in Illinois, could be sentenced in excess of 96 years. He might be hit with consecutive six-year minimum sentences on each of 16 counts of aggravated battery and an additional consecutive prison term for whatever sentence Judge Vincent Gaughan hands down for his second-degree murder count, according to the Chicago Sun-Times . Van Dyke’s sentencing was scheduled for later this year, with much of the nation watching for the number of years of the prison term. While that was clear-cut, when the Chicago officers charged with conspiracy and covering-up facts in McDonald’s shooting will join him in prison was not yet clear. The next trial connected to Laquan McDonald's death will test the so-called “code of silence” in the Chicago Police Department https://t.co/ZNlZOFeirO — NYT National News (@NYTNational) October 10, 2018 The upcoming trial of three Chicago officer — former Detective David March , ex-Officer Joseph Walsh and Officer Thomas Gaffney — will put a magnifying glass on the hours and day after McDonald’s fatal shooting. Prosecutors will pick apart the officers’ stories during the proceeding, beginning on Nov. 26, in an effort to examine how fiction was sold as fact. March and Walsh, both now retired, played lead detective in the investigation and partner to Van Dyke, respectively. They, along with Gaffney, one of the first responding officers on that night Oct. 20, 2014, were charged with trying to shield Van Dyke from prosecution, blame and wrongdoing, which was shown via graphic dashcam video. Their defense couldn’t stop the wheels of justice in Van Dyke’s trial, which ended with him being held accountable for the unjustified killing. Activists have asked for March, Walsh and Gaffney to also be held accountable, as well as all other parties involved in the shooting. They want the blue wall of silence to come down. Aside from Van Dyke’s sentencing and the other officers’ trial, the Chicago Police Department will have to decide whether it will change how it interacts with Black communities. Trump’s Department of Justice may be vehemently opposing police reform but the demand and need for change won’t die down. The verdict in the Laquan McDonald case affirms the time is now for police to change how it interacts with Black communities. Cities across the US must implement strategies that change the way that police departments interact with Black communities. https://t.co/MrDZsBrFsT pic.twitter.com/MWTNyL6OSE — Shriver Center (@shrivercenter) October 14, 2018 SEE ALSO: Stacey Dash Reportedly Married Another Trump Worshiper Just 10 Days After They Met GOP Contender Seeking Al Franken’s Senate Seat Called Michelle Obama A ‘Chimp ‘ [ione_media_gallery src=”https://newsone.com” id=”3831747″ overlay=”true”]
Theo Wargo/Getty Images for Global Citizen Panic Ensues As People Mistake Fallen Barrier For Gunshots At Festival Every year, thousands of people pack into Central Park in New York City for Global Citizen Festival, a concert that boasts big headliners and free tickets, all for the cause of ending extreme poverty by 2030. This year, however, there was some panic at the festival that almost halted the concert. Just ahead of Janet Jackson’s set at the Global Citizen Festival, a fallen barrier caused panic among the 60,000 attendees–who reportedly thought it was the sound of gunshots. Witnesses at the scene told the New York Times that the confusion and fear of an active shooter at the music festival nearly caused a stampede as concertgoers fled. Chris Martin, who was on the stage at the time, tried to calm the attendees down. “What happened is a barrier I think fell down. Of course it caused people to be a bit frightened and stuff like that. But nobody is trying to hurt nobody. You are all safe,” he said to cheers before handing the microphone to NYPD’s assistant chief Kathleen O’Reilly, who also reassured the safety of the attendees. There was no shots fired. Hopefully the show is going to go on. We just have to reassess the situation and try and create a new safety lane. We’re going to have to try our best.” Global Citizen later tweeted out that there were a few injuries caused by those running away, etc, but the show would go on. Thank you to all the Global Citizens who took action and joined us today. Our thoughts are with those who were injured or afraid after the barrier fell earlier this evening. We're grateful for the first responders who ensured everyone's safety and enabled the festival to go on. pic.twitter.com/K03VEpP8FJ — Global Citizen (@GlblCtzn) September 30, 2018 And the show did just that. After some amazing sets from the likes of Cardi B and Janelle Monae, Janet Jackson took the stage–and even brought out Q-Tip out as a surprise guest to perform their classic hit “Got ’til It’s Gone.” The Weeknd ended out the night with an amazing performance, and the rest of the night went off without a hitch.
