The Bird’s Nest Tree House at the Treehotel Hides Among The Branches

TreeHugger has previously admired the Almost Invisible Mirrored Tree House Built In Sweden at the wonderful Treehotel , but it is only one of six remarkable structures. Another way of making oneself less visible and intrusive is camouflage, the approach taken by Bertil Harström of Inredningsgruppen ; He covers his suite in sticks and makes like a birds nest…. Got a plan to get us back to the Moon? NASA’s got $30 million worth of motivation!

In the clearest indication yet that the future of space exploration lies as much in the private sector as government agencies, NASA announced it's offering $30.1 million for the first commercial group to land a probe on the Moon. Specifically, NASA says it will buy data from whoever can successfully design a lunar rover and actually get it to the Moon. This basically doubles Google's Lunar X prize, which offers 30 million to the first successful commercial moonshot. This is a huge boon to the 21 different developers gunning for the Google prize, because many had already incorporated data purchases from organizations like NASA into their business model, and the chance of a 60.1 million dollar payday should provide ample incentive for one of the companies to succeed. In a press release, the space agency explained just what it's looking for: [NASA] challenges industry to demonstrate Earth-to-lunar surface flight system capabilities and test technologies. Data provided to NASA should include information related to landing using a human mission profile; identification of hazards during landing; precision landing; and imagery and long-duration surface operations. [NASA] asks for information about the design and demonstration of an end-to-end lunar landing mission. This includes data associated with hardware design, development and testing; ground operations and integration; launch; trajectory correction maneuvers; lunar braking, burn and landing; and enhanced capabilities. This is potentially a big win-win for NASA, as it can help support the advancement of space travel while still only spending a fraction of the money it would take to send one of its own probes to the Moon. Like the Lunar X prize, there is a time limit on the prize – companies only have until 2012 to collect the full 60.1 million, after which both the Google and NASA sides of the prize shrink. After that, NASA says it will offer up to 15 million for data until 2014, and if nobody has claimed the money by then, the offer expires. Also, for any enterprising readers feeling like making a late entry, be warned – the deadline for proposals is September 8. http://io9.com/5607572/got-a-plan-to-get-us-back-to-the-moon-nasas-got-30-millio… added by: pjacobs51

Kardashian Klothing Line: Konfirmed!

Do you wanna look like THIS ? If so, you’re in luck: Kourtney, Khloe and Kim Kardashian have confirmed that they will partner with Australian designer Bruno Schiavi’s Jupi Corp. to create a line of clothing. It will debut early next year and include accessories, lingerie, swimwear and shoes. “We obviously waited on a big partnership like this for a long time because we’ve had so many different offers and we wanted to make sure that we had a huge say in the design and that our personalities would come through,” Kim said. Their personalities would come through? Does this mean all outfits inspired by Kim will resemble a robot? These sisters own a pair of Dash clothing stores in California and Miami (though THG reporting proves the Florida establishment is rarely actually open for business) and also designed a fall line for Bebe this year. The new collection will hit major retail stores in 17 countries in 2011 and be comprised of pieces that flatter all body types, including ugly one-shoulder dresses , jumpsuits, blazers and leggings. “All three of us have similar bones, but we have different shapes and sizes,” Khloe said. “I’m tall, Kim is curvy and Kourtney is petite – and we know how to dress up our best assets.” Translation: they show off their big breasts a lot.

‘Captain America’ Director’s ‘Entire Career’ Got Him Job, Marvel Boss Says

Joe Johnston’s groundbreaking design work on ‘Star Wars,’ ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark’ helped land him ‘Captain’ chair, Kevin Feige says. By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Captain America Photo: Marvel Comics Summer 2011 is going to be a big one for comic book movies — specifically because of two features from Marvel Studios: “Captain America” and “Thor.” And while there’s still almost a full year to go until those films are released, ever since the casts of the two flicks made appearances at San Diego Comic-Con last month, the Internets have been buzzing with anticipation for the star-spangled hero and the God of Thunder. When Marvel’s head honcho Kevin Feige stopped by our live stream during the Con, we peppered him with questions about all of their upcoming projects, including how they decided on putting Joe Johnston and Kenneth Branagh in the director’s chairs . With Branagh, who’ll helm “Thor,” Feige said, in a nutshell, he “chased it.” In Johnston’s case, however, the reasons had more to do with Johnston’s already well-established filmmaking cred. “I think Joe’s entire career has been leading up to this,” Feige told MTV News. “When you look at the design work he did on the original ‘Star Wars,’ I saw a bunch of people dressed as Boba Fett already lined-up for his signing,” Feige recalled fondly. “The work he did with [Steven] Spielberg on Raiders [of the Lost Ark], the two films he directed, of course ‘The Rocketeer.’ I think his whole career has been leading up to this movie.” Johnston is certainly no stranger to genre/fantasy filmmaking. In addition to having served as art director on some of the most visually intense and celebrated movies of all time — the first two original “Star Wars” films and the aforementioned “Raiders of the Lost Ark” — he also directed “Honey, I Shrunk the Kids,” “Hidalgo” and “The Wolfman.” As for Johnston’s take on “Captain America,” his star, Chris Evans , told us that the film will be highly stylized, but not too “glossy” and not too dark. “I definitely asked Joe, what kind of gloss are we going for here? Is this going to have the kind of ‘Spider-Man,’ ‘Fantastic Four’ shine?” Evans recalled. “He said it’s not going to be that glossy, not that colorful, but we’re not going as dark as something like ‘Batman.’ ” Check out everything we’ve got on “Thor” and “Captain America: The First Avenger” . Bethenny Getting Married Season Finale: Finding a Balance

It’s all about balance. That’s what Bethenny Frankel learned on last night’s season finale of her reality show, as both business and baby beckoned. As usual, a THG intern has reviewed the episode in depth, sharing her snark with readers below. Take it away! I have to say that for a finale episode, this one was quasi-boring.

Engineers Use Rocket Science for Self-Sufficient Wastewater Treatment

Photo via divemasterking2000 Nitrates are commonly found in groundwater, ending up there after they’re used for fertilizing crops or from storm-water run-off. Typically a contaminate to worry about, a group of engineers from Stanford University have figured out how to turn the problem of nitrates in the water in to a possible solution for energy generation. While their design started out as a nitrous oxide thruster for spacecraft, they figured out how it could also be used at wastewater treatment plants to turn decompose nitrous oxide gas into… Read the full story on TreeHugger
