Obama Admin to Speed Up Offshore Wind Power Development

Photo: Kim Hansen , Wikimedia, CC As it stands, it typically takes a staggering 7 years — at the very least — for an offshore wind project to receive federal approval to begin construction. And as we’ve seen with the infamous Cape Wind project , there’s plenty of red tape on the local and state levels as well. So its no surprise that the the US is seriously lagging in the offshore wind power sector. But the Dept. of the… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Lady Gaga’s VMA Outfits: Fashion Week Attendees Weigh In

‘She is like a work of art!’ ‘Behind the Velvet Ropes’ hostess Lauren Ezersky says. By Christopher MacAllister Lady Gaga at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards Photo: WireImage NEW YORK — Even though Lady Gaga managed to cut down her costume changes from last year’s Video Music Awards to just three for the 2010 Video Music Awards , they still sparked the interest of many who turned up and tuned in. We asked the opinions some New York Fashion Week attendees which of the three costumes was their favorite. Lisa Liu perceived her arrival outfit , designed by Alexander McQueen, as “her tamest outfit of the evening. But I thought it looked very Lady Gaga.” Becky Boudwyn described her as “an out-of-control couture Pocahontas.” “Behind the Velvet Ropes” hostess Lauren Ezersky said, “She is like a work of art! When I look at her, it’s almost like looking at a painting by an old master. … When you look at her, you can’t just look once, there’s always something else to see! I love her first outfit, I just love it!” This dress was seen as the favorite by many, including Chris Futrell, who praised the fact that it was “very detailed oriented.” When we brought up outfit number two , people were not afraid to mention the fact that Gaga could barely walk in it. It was praised by Teasea and Duane Bennett as being “quite exquisite” and “very gothic,” but was disliked by fashion stylist Celine Griscom, who described it as “slightly dumpy … doesn’t have enough leanness to it,” and Ayoka Lucas, who said, “It’s not flattering to her body at all, unfortunately!” The third and final dress, the controversial meat dress , definitely left a bad taste in people’s mouths as reactions were unified in perceiving this dress as “something different and something you would not see at an awards show such as the VMAs” (Chris Futrell). Lauren Ezersky praised the dress, joking that “She’s cookin! In fact, she needs to cook! … I love the look of it, but I’m not quite sure if I would want to sit next to her! How would they bring that to her? Like, in a freezer!? I don’t know! I think it’s totally cool! You go, girl!” The speculation about whether or not it was real meat was not lost on Lisa Liu, who noticed that no one was “shy to hug her so I wasn’t sure if it was real meat.” Most people shared the opinion of Teasea Bennett, who said, “I think she was able to pull it off. I wasn’t too fond of that one, to be honest, but it suited her! I think it suited Gaga. She can pull anything off! Even a bag, a plain plastic bag, she’d rock that!” Lauren Ezersky summarized her opinion of Gaga’s fashion choices, saying, “She gives young people inspiration that it’s OK to be different, it’s OK to look the way you want to look.” And in relation to the recent passing of Alexander McQueen, the designer of the first two dresses, Ezersky pointed out, “It was a beautiful homage to him because we all really miss him in this industry. I got to meet him one time and he was an amazing artistic genius. … She will bring out the new Alexander McQueen. She’ll find them and wear them.” The Moonmen have all been handed out and the stars have gone home, but there’s plenty of 2010 MTV Video Music Awards news, interviews, behind-the-scenes scoop, party reports and more still to come, so keep it locked on MTVNews.com. ‘The Hills’ Ladies Go Glam For Red-Carpet Finale

While Kristin, Lo and the rest of the girls opt for head-turning mini-dresses, Brody and Frankie go way casual. By Nuzhat Naoreen Kristin Cavallari Photo: John Shearer / WireImage During six seasons of “The Hills,” the ladies always managed to leave an impression when it came to fashion. It was no different when the stylish castmembers arrived to walk the red carpet at Los Angeles’ Roosevelt Hotel, just before the show’s series finale was set to air on Tuesday night. Although Lauren Conrad , Whitney Port and Heidi Montag were notably absent from the pre-show carpet, the rest of the “Hills” cast showed up in their finest to celebrate “The Hills Live: A Hollywood Ending” aftershow. And while the guys stepped out in casual looks, the girls mostly opted for designer mini-dresses. Lo Bosworth, one of the first to arrive, bared her shoulders in a short, white Tadashi Shoji dress that she said was straight from the designer’s latest runway collection. Her pal Kristin Cavallari had one of the night’s standout looks, decked out in a gorgeous form-fitting, flesh-tone dress that was delicately crisscrossed with silver sparkles. Unfortunately, though Kristin’s dress was generating lots of talk, the reality-TV star couldn’t recall the name of its designer. (Her co-star Frankie Delgado tried in vain to help by searching for a tag.) Both Lo and Kristin opted for neutral colors on the red carpet, but Audrina Patridge mixed things up a bit, arriving in a bright purple mini with cutouts at the waist and along the shoulder. Like Audrina, Stephanie Pratt also opted for color. And while Stephanie’s dress might have been a last-minute find — she told MTV News she’d gone shopping the morning of the finale — it was a really good one. Her strapless H

The City Recap: Whitney Port Gets a Curtain Call, Olivia Palermo Gets to Keep Her Job

Last week was a rough one career-wise as Olivia Palermo was put on the chopping block and Whitney Port was basically told she’s not a real designer on The City. This week marked a renaissance of sorts for both. Olivia rose to the occasion somehow and avoided being fired, while Whit’s fashion show in Miami was a big hit. Here’s THG’s plus-minus recap of last night’s The City … Whitney Port travels to Miami with Roxy Olin (for some reason) and feels the pressure of competition and putting on a show without Kelly. Real world, girl. Plus 5 . Olivia vows her “personal relationship” with Zac Posen will score an interview. We’ve heard that before. Minus 4 . But Joe Zee says get it or you’re fired! Plus 4 . When model Erica is seen with another designer, she suggests “sharing” but Whitney basically calls dibs. Models. Just like pieces of meat, we tell you. Plus 7 . At the launch party, Olivia poses on the red carpet (obviously, because she’s a star) before Joe sends her to get Zac … then decides to tail her a$$. Plus 8 . Impressed, Joe says this is “the reason he hired” Olivia. Minus 19 , because dude, she got lucky like once, and should have been fired months ago. Get real. At a Miami boutique, Whitney and Roxy Olin decide her designs would fit in well. Roxy is actually useful and meets the buyer, who agrees to peep it. Plus 5 . Editor-in-chief Robbie and editorial director Keith watch Olivia. Erin says they should compare it to Louise Roe’s recent interview. Dun-dun-dunnn! Plus 6 . Amazingly, they determine that “everyone has their strengths” and “Olivia is good at what she does.” No idea what that would be, but sure thing! Minus 11 . Louise and Olivia meet and hit it off. Plus 4 , since Olivia is either clueless about Louise angling to take her job, or just doesn’t care, since MTV won’t let her. Roxy appears to be quite frustrated about the apparent disorganization at the show. Roxy? Complaining about a lack of focus? Who’d have guessed. Minus 5 . Despite setbacks, the show is a success, and Whitney Port takes a well-deserved curtain call – and Shari and Pamela decide to carry Whitney Eve! Plus 10 . TOTAL: +10 . SEASON: -53 .
