Lou Reed, a rock legend who fronted the Velvet Underground and wrote a majority of that band’s singles, passed this morning, according to Rolling Stone . He was 71 years old. Details surrounding the musician’s death are unclear at this time, but he underwent a liver transplant in May. The Velvet Underground is recognized as one of the most influential group’s in music history, having a major effect on American culture and bringing pop art into the mainstream during its impressive run. Reed – who played guitar and sang – famously collaborated with Andy Warhol and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996 along with members from the Velvet Underground. He was born in Brooklyn and actually underwent electroshock therapy as a teenager after coming out as bisexual. Reed married artist Laurie Anderson in 2008.
