True Detective was a surprise runaway hit for HBO, and the 2014 Emmy nominations indicate that the show is just as popular with the Academy as it was with viewers. Naturally, there’s a lot of pressure on showrunner Nic Pizzolatto to deliver again in season 2, and the show’s one-and-done anthology format means that acclaimed stars Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson won’t be returning for a second go-round. So who will fill the (probably gritty, psychologically complex) voice in the show’s second season? Well, rumors that Jessica Chastain will join True Detective were shot down months ago, and no new casting information was leaked until today. According to unconfirmed reports, it now looks as though Irish actor Colin Farrell will continue the show’s tradition of transplanting big screen stars to the world of premium cable. The series will feature an entirely new setting and storyline for season 2, so there’s no telling if Farrell will be drinking heavily and vocally contemplating the nature of existence a la McConaughey in season one. (Read: that’s totally what he’s gonna do.) Early reports indicate that TD will feature three leads this time around, and there’s no word yet on what probably A-list stars will join Farrell. Sadly, the cast shake-up means there will be no more Alexandra Daddario nude scenes . To re-live those, you’ll have to watch True Detective online at TV Fanatic. With an Oscar win and a hit TV series, Matthew McConaughey has been having a pretty solid 2014 thus far. Considering his famous love of chillin’, you might expect the actor to take it easy for a while… but instead McConaughey somehow stepped his game up even more while surfing (of course) on a beach in Malibu recently. According to the National Enquirer , the True Detective star saw a group of teenagers poking a baby seal with a stick to find out if it was injured. Naturally, McConaughey paddled ashore (and, we’d imagine, shook the water droplets from his hair in slow motion) to inform the kids that the seal was just resting and waiting for his mother to return. The best part of this report? “After a 20-minute lecture on sea life, the kids were so anxious to get away, that they didn’t even bother to ask the star to pose for a photo.” Amazing. Of course, McConaughey lost scary weight for Dallas Buyers Club and though he seems to have bulked back up in recent months, the kids may not have recognized the once ab-tastic actor. After all, it’s hard to believe the mature, slimmed down McConaughey of today is the same star who once headlined such critical and commercial favorites as The Ghost of Girlfriends Past and Failure to Launch …actually, we’re beginning to understand why those kids didn’t recognize him. We kid. Past failures aside, the Austin Drawler is killing it like no other actor in the game these days and now he’s savin’ seals and schoolin’ younguns to boot. Long live the McConnaissance. Nearly two decades after Kurt Cobain committed suicide, new photos from the scene of the rocker’s death have been released. A Seattle detective recently reviewed the case, assuming the 20th anniversary of Cobain’s passing would renew interest in the incident, which took place on April 8, 1994. He did not discover any new information but he did some across four rolls of undeveloped rolls of film from the suicide scene. Kurt Cobain Suicide Photos Revealed Authorities released two of those photos to The Associated Press last night, with one depicting a box of drug paraphernalia, a spoon and what appear to be needles on the floor next to half a cigarette and sunglasses. The other shows the same paraphernalia box closed aside some cash, a cigarette pack and a wallet that shows Cobain’s identification. “There was nothing earth-shattering in any of these images,” police spokeswoman Renee Witt said. “The detective went into the case files to refresh himself. The outcome of the case has not changed.” Cobain’s body was discovered in Seattle and an investigation determined that, days prior, the Nirvana frontman had gone into the greenhouse of his large home and taken a massive dose of heroin. He then shot himself with a shotgun. In a statement on the Seattle Police Department’s online blotter, the detective who re-examined the case dismissed speculation of any kind of conspiracy. “Sometimes people believe what they read – some of the disinformation from some of the books, that this was a conspiracy. That’s completely inaccurate,” said Detective Mike Ciesynski. “It’s a suicide. This is a closed case.”
