Lil Wayne Collaborators Partners-N-Crime Building Buzz Beyond Bayou

New Orleans duo talk to Mixtape Daily about linking up with Lil Wayne, YMCMB crew as they prep Legendary LP. By Jayson Rodriguez Partners In Crime Photo: NOLA Fire Starter: Partners-N-Crime OK, so these guys might not exactly be new jacks, but Partners-N-Crime are still on the come up. After building an extensive catalog and collaborations with the likes of Lil Wayne, the New Orleans duo are expanding their fanbase. Riding the wave of their new banger “Finally Could Breathe,” featuring Young Money president Mack Maine, Kango Slim and Mista Meana are currently hard at work on their 10th project, Legendary, set to drop next year. It’s an effort they once would have been hard pressed to put together, when their camps warring with each other years ago. “When we were coming up in the game, Wayne was a little bit younger than us,” Slim told Mixtape Daily. “We were on a label at the time called Big Boy and he was with Cash Money Records. And to be honest, both of the labels had a rivalry thing going on. Once Cash Money blew, Big Boy continued to do their thing. They housed Mystikal, Fiend, us, and a couple more artists. At one time, we never looked eye to eye, but as we grew older things began to change.” Wayne helped break the ice when he reached out to the underground vets a couple of years ago offering to record a track together. (The group was also, at one point, signed to former Cash Money member Juvenile’s label.) Partners-N-Crime sent Weezy something they were working on, a rockish number called “We Do What We Want To,” which eventually landed on their last set, We Are Legend. The superstar MC liked what he heard and contributed a verse. (“This was a little bit before he got into the same type of music with Rebirth, ” Meana recalled.) The result was a raucous anthem that helped to push PNC beyond their bayou borders. Before finishing up their Legendary collection, the group is next scheduled to perform at BAM’s 2010 Next Wave Festival in Brooklyn, New York, as part of the Red Hot + New Orleans lineup. Joe Budden Credits Eminem With Slaughterhouse’s Detroit Love

New Jersey MC says Em’ is just one of the most supportive hip-hop people that I’ve met.’ By Mawuse Ziegbe, with reporting by Rahman Dukes Joe Budden Photo: MTV News At the Detroit stops of Jay-Z and Eminem’s Home and Home Tour , there was undeniable crowd support for another hip-hop crew: rap supergroup Slaughterhouse. The team’s New Jersey representative Joe Budden credits a lot of the Midwest love not only to group member and Detroit native Royce Da 5’9″, but also to the support the collective has received from Motor City megastar Eminem. “We get a lot of support out there in the D,” Budden told MTV News. “I attribute a lot of it to just Royce and Em.” Budden said that, despite Eminem’s superstar status, he still has love for the purest elements of the hip-hop art form. The Mood Muzik spitter said Slaughterhouse stand for those same rap essentials, which endears the foursome to the hip-hop luminary. “Em, to be as successful as he is, and I’ll just tell this to anybody with two ears, or one ear for that matter, is just one of the most supportive hip-hop people that I’ve met,” he said. “He’s really, really just into hip-hop and rap and lyrics. He’s just really into all of the things that group was built around.” Although Eminem and the Slaughterhouse crew see eye-to-eye creatively, bringing Budden, Royce, Crooked I and Joell Ortiz into the Shady fold has been an ongoing saga. Earlier this year, Ortiz spoke with MTV News about finalizing a deal with Em. “We in the ninth inning of it, we just keep changing pitchers,” the Brooklyn MC said in May. “I don’t know, man — it’s a lot of hold-ups. I thought on my end I was straight, but I wasn’t. We’re going back and forth with the people I’m working with. Joe [Budden] had some issues or whatever. The interest is still there. Everybody is excited about it; it’s just a lot of people involved in this. Four artists, four separate managers, label situations — a lot of black and white that gotta get settled for it to happen, but verbally, we’re on Shady! Eminem is excited, the whole group is excited. The world is excited. I can’t even do a show without somebody asking that. Without them being, ‘You ripped it, what’s up with Em?’ Everybody is waiting on this, so it’s going to happen. It’s going to happen.” What do you think about Joe Budden’s thoughts about Eminem? Let us know in the comments! Related Artists Joe Budden Eminem Slaughterhouse

Rick Ross ‘Salutes’ Eminem After VMA Rehearsal

‘Seeing him in person brought his rhymes that much more alive to me,’ he says of Em’s Saturday night run-through. By Shaheem Reid Rick Ross Photo: MTV News LOS ANGELES — Rick Ross got the girl, but he wasn’t afraid to give Eminem props. The Bawse got a major look at the MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday night (September 12), picking up host Chelsea Handler on his four-wheeler and driving out of the house. The night before the big show, Ross had the opportunity to play fly on the wall. He saw Eminem’s rehearsal of “Not Afraid” and “Love the Way You Lie” a full day before fans laid their eyes on it. “I actually had a chance to sit through the whole rehearsal yesterday, man, and got to watch Eminem rehearse and perform for the first time,” Ross said on the white carpet. “You know, I gotta salute him. I gotta take my hat off. He’s a dope lyricist. Actually, seeing him in person brought his rhymes that much more alive to me. I’m actually looking forward to seeing Eminem do his thing.” In the past, Ross has both challenged Slim Shady to a battle as well as said he wanted to collaborate with the Detroit rhyme icon. The Miami hitmaker did say that he and Em did not meet during the practice. “Nah, not at all,” Ross said when asked if they crossed paths. “I just played my position. Waited for my opportunity to rehearse. I wanted to take my hat off to commend a fellow MC.” What did you think of Em’s performance? Let us know in the comments! Linkin Park’s Surprise VMA Location: Story Behind Griffith Park Observatory

Location has been featured in dozens of films, TV shows and music videos, including Adam Lambert’s ‘If I Had You.’ By Kara Warner Linkin Park performs at the 2010 VMAs Photo: MTV It’s fair to say that Linkin Park ‘s VMA performance of their hit “The Catalyst” at the Griffith Park Observatory was pretty epic. Naturally, the band’s killer rock stylings were a major part of the effect, but the historic scenery definitely enhanced the experience. For astute pop culture fanatics out there, if you feel like you’ve seen the picturesque setting before, you have — especially if you’ve seen “Transformers” or Adam Lambert’s music video for “If I Had You.” The Griffith Park Observatory is so named for Col. Griffith J. Griffith, an eccentric and generous early L.A. land baron, who bequeathed the land upon which the landmark now sits to the city of Los Angeles in 1896. The historic site is a popular tourist destination for its science- and space-related exhibits, but also because it has been featured in dozens of films, TV shows and music videos. Old-school classics filmed here include “Rebel Without a Cause,” “Back to the Future,” “Who Framed Roger Rabbit,” “The Rocketeer” and Paula Abdul’s video for “Rush Rush.” More recently, “Transformers,” “Yes Man,” “Funny People,” the TV series “24,” “Beverly Hills 90210,” “The Simpsons” and Lambert’s “If I Had You” have included footage from the historic site. Versions of the GP Observatory are also featured in the video games “Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas,” “Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines” and “Future Cop: LAPD.” In addition to the landmark’s pop culture ties, the Griffith Park Observatory’s planetarium was used to train pilots in celestial navigation during World War II, and again in the ’60s to train Apollo program astronauts for the first lunar missions. The observatory underwent a major renovation from 2002 to 2006 and now features an expanded exhibit space, the Leonard Nimoy Event Horizon Theater and Wolfgang Puck’s Caf

Eminem Wins Best Male Video For ‘Not Afraid’

The Detroit MC opened VMAs with a triumphant performance of the comeback anthem. By James Dinh Eminem performs at the 2010 VMAs Photo: Kevin Mazur/ WireImage After a triumphant opening performance of his VMA-nominated “Not Afraid,” Eminem took home the Moonman for Best Male Video at the 2010 Video Music Awards . Although it was a major win for the Detroit MC, Em wasn’t able to accept the award as presenters Katy Perry and Nicki Minaj revealed that he had already left the building and was on a plane to New York. “All right you guys, sit down. Eminem just left the building. He had to catch a flight to go back to New York to perform with Jigga man,” Minaj said referring to the two rappers’ Home and Home tour, which resumes on Monday on Tuesday. In the Rich Lee-directed clip, Eminem takes a journey through the streets of Newark, New Jersey, where he reflects on his personal tribulations. The rapper opened the Video Music Awards with a performance medley of his two smashes: “Not Afraid” and “Hate That I Love You” alongside surprise guest Rihanna. The rapper is also up for several other awards, including Best Hip-Hop Video (Drake, Kanye West, Lil Wayne and Eminem “Forever”) and the coveted Video Of The Year (“Not Afraid”). Eminem’s DJ Alchemist ‘Became A Fan’ In Detroit

‘I knew Em was really comfortable,’ Al says after Thursday’s Home and Home show. By Shaheem Reid, with additional reporting by Sway Calloway Alchemist and Sway Calloway Photo: MTV News DETROIT — To steal a line from Bun B, Jay-Z and Eminem did everything but walk on water for the crowd at Comerica Park on Thursday and Friday. G-Unit, Young Jeezy, Drake, D12 and Dr. Dre were all guests at the shows, playing on a stage so huge, you could fit the entire Tigers and Lions teams on it. Before night two of the Home and Home Tour, MTV News talked to the man who had a very integral role in Em’s set, the Alchemist. Though Em tried out something new with a live band, he also had Al holding down his duties on the 1’s and 2’s. A few hours before taking the stage on Friday night, Al gave us his recap about the combustion at Comerica. “I think Em tested the waters [for these shows in Detroit and New York] when we did the Europe tour,” Alchemist said. “You could tell when he went out there in [Europe], when he saw the reaction of the people again, it was like, ‘Right.’ He’s been through so much. For him to be out there sober, this is the first time he’s hitting the stage — God bless the dead — without Proof. The [European shows] were big shows and a big step. You got the feeling he knew he had the step still, and people love him the same way. “I looked at the crowds in Europe and said, ‘You have to do those shows in America,’ ” he continued. “A lot of times you go overseas. The love is the same. But the energy you see at these festivals [overseas], wow! Coming back from that and hitting the stage [Thursday in Detroit], reassured me, with a little bit of organization and some thought, the energy is the same in America. I was thrilled, like, ‘Wow. We brought it home.’ “From the DJ booth [Thursday] night, it was hard. You see the sea of people on the floor. If I looked up, I saw a full stadium of people. If I squinted my eyes real hard when the records were playing, I could see them going just as hard as the people in the front were. That was amazing. Even when Jay hit the stage, he had to pause and take a moment to take it all in. I felt that too. That’s not scripted. “When Dre came out, that moment of the show, I became a fan. I was no longer DJing. At that moment when Dre came out, it was like, ‘Oooooh.’ He was five feet from me, he came out the floor. He was rising. It was like watching a video. It was the theatrics of a video. When he came out and did his Dre bop, it was like he never left,” Al observed. “When Em said, ‘You see what I do for you, Detroit,’ I knew Em was really comfortable. “When Drake came out, it’s safe to say women really like Drake,” Alchemist added. “The guys, of course, like him as well, but the ladies — it was a shock. I’ve seen them do [‘Forever’] a couple times. Last night was their best interaction. They’re getting into a zone where they are comfortable.” Were you at the Eminem and Jay-Z Home and Home shows?
