BRENDAN SMIALOWSKI/AFP/Getty Images Houston Hit By Flooding After Harvey Houston residents are being urged to “shelter in place” or wait on top of their roofs for rescue after the damning effects of Hurricane Harvey. The storm which was a category 4 at landfall dumped torrential rain on the city and southeast Texas causing hundreds of water rescues. “This is a life-threatening situation,” said Michael Palmer, lead meteorologist at the Weather Channel. According to NBC News , the U.S. Coast Guard said it was conducting urban search and rescue operations in the greater Houston area and that its local command center had received more than 300 requests. “Currently there are five MH-65 Dolphin Helicopters conducting rescues,” the statement said. Hurricane Harvey’s claimed at least two lives. One person was found dead in a vehicle in Houston on Saturday night and another died in a house fire in Aransas County that rescuers could not reach because of flooding. So far, President Trump who told residents in the storm’s path “good luck”, has tweeted that this is the “worst storm/hurricane” some people have ever seen. What year is it again??? Jury Declines To Indict Paul Wall And Baby Bash On Drug Charges Two Houston artists are celebrating today after the drug charges were pending against them. As previously reported Paul Wall and Baby Bash were arrested in December after a police raid today for the distribution and manufacturing of a controlled substance. That controlled substance turned out to be THC, the compound that gives marijuana its high, after authorities alleged that they were selling weed out of the Paradise Smoke Shop. According to ABC 13 , five people were indicted on drug charges for their alleged roles in the shop and declined to indict five others including Baby Bash and Paul Wall. Texas also has a Misdemeanor Marijuana Diversion Program that offers persons who meet certain criteria the option to avoid being charged and prosecuted for misdemeanor amounts of marijuana if they successfully complete a rehabilitative program on decision making. Earlier this month, on Febrauary 7, Muhammad Ali Jr., the son of boxing great Muhammad Ali, and is mother Khalilah Camacho-Ali who was the boxer’s second wife were returning to Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport after visiting Jamaica for a Black History Month speaking engagement in Montego Bay when customs officials pulled them aside because of their “Arabic-sounding” names. USA Today reports that the officials let Camacho-Ali go after she showed them a photo of herself and her former husband, but family lawyer Chris Mancini says Ali Jr. was held for almost two hours and repeatedly asked questions about his name including: “Where did you get your name from?” and “Are you Muslim?” After Ali Jr. responded that he is a Muslim, he continued to be barraged with questions about his religion and place of birth — stupid because they had his U.S. passport which lists Philadelphia as his birthplace. “The line of questioning is indicative of profiling and designed to produce answers that corroborate what officials want to hear,” Mancini said. Neither Camacho-Ali nor Ali Jr. have ever been subjected to detainment before, despite extensive global travel experience, he said. “To the Ali family, it’s crystal clear that this is directly linked to Mr. Trump’s efforts to ban Muslims from the United States,” Mancini said, referring to President Trump’s executive order signed Jan. 27 that instituted a ban for citizens of seven predominantly Muslim countries. Mancini said he and the Ali family are contemplating filing a federal lawsuit and are currently trying to find out how many other people have been subjected to the same treatment as Ali Jr. “Imagine walking into an airport and being asked about your religion,” he said. “This is classic customs profiling.” Just INSANE!!! Fair or foul??? Dr. William R. Harvey Disapproves Of BET’s “The Quad” While some people are entranced by BET’s “The Quad” and its HBCU based storytelling, others think it’s an absolute disgrace, timed to shame historically black institutions during black history month. In particular, the President of a certain prominent historically black college is none too pleased with BET’s new show. Dr. William R. Harvey, the longstanding President of Virginia’s Hampton University , sent a scathing letter out to Debra Lee and BET for “The Quad”, the new series that depicts HBCU culture at “Georgia A&M University.” According to Harvey it’s a poor representation of historically black colleges because the drama centers around “unethical behavior” including sex and drugs and the fictitious school is driven almost solely by the band program. “Devoid of any reference to academics, The Quad is about a president who is promiscuous, trustees who are unwilling to deal with a rogue band director, and a band director who condones criminal activity on the part of his drum major.,” wrote Harvey according to HBCU Digest who obtained copies of the 3-page letter. “The Quad will lead many to believe that HBCUs exist because of their marching bands; that our presidents are unethical; that our boards are dysfunctional and have misplaced priorities; that our faculty, students and administrators are driven by sex, alcohol, marijuana, low self-esteem, parties and a preoccupation with music; that it is acceptable to disrespect women; that university policy can be set by a band director; and that there are no standards of conduct or penalties for bad behavior. Doctor Harvey also went on to call it “fake news” and said that its February debut is especially offensive. “We cannot afford this kind of storytelling,” wrote Harvey. “It amounts to the type of ‘fake news’ that is prevalent today. You see, all that most people know about HBCUs is what they see on television. What I saw on BET February 1st was not accurate; rather, it was a bogus representation of very important and historic institutions.” Dr. Harvey is known for his strong opinions, he previously defended Talladega College for performing during Trump’s inauguration.
