Hoy En Mi Gente News: Democratic House Rep Luis Gutierrez Is Arrested In Front Of The White House For Protesting Deportations

Really? A civil protest is illegal now?? Rep. Luis Gutierrez (D-Ill.) and 10 other immigration reform supporters were arrested in front of the White House on Tuesday for protesting against the Obama administration’s deportation of young people and families. Gutierrez has been arrested for protesting twice before — once, in the mid-1990s, against the bombing of Vieques, Puerto Rico, and again in 2010 against the Obama administration’s deportation record. On Tuesday, he and other deportation critics sat down in front of the White House with a sign reading “One million deported under President Obama.” After about 20 minutes, they were arrested by U.S. Park Police. The 11 protesters will be processed and then released after paying a small fine. Gutierrez is a vocal critic of the deportation of young people and families, who he says should be protected from removal by an executive order by the White House. But President Barack Obama has repeatedly refused to make such an order, calling for Congress to act on immigration reform instead. Barry-O has way bigger problems to deal with than to be making sure that you don’t get send to jail sir. In case you haven’t heard, there is a financial crisis in this country…SMH Source

For Discussion: New Study Shows That Self-Esteem Levels Vary Between Race And Age

Check out this article and let us know what you think. Although Hispanics tend to have lower self-esteem than blacks or whites in the teen years, by age 30 their self-esteem has increased to the point that they have higher self-esteem than whites, a new study suggests. And in both adolescence and young adulthood, blacks have higher self-esteem than whites. By age 30, whites trailed both Hispanics and blacks in terms of self-esteem, according to the report published online July 4 in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology. Researchers at the University of Basel in Switzerland made this finding after analyzing U.S. survey data of more than 7,000 young adults from 1994 to 2008. The participants ranged in age from 14 to 30 years. Over the course of 14 years, the study authors examined how five personality traits (openness, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness and neuroticism) affected the youth’s self-esteem. In addition, the researchers also looked at the participants’ sense of life mastery, risk-taking tendencies, gender, ethnicity, health and income. “We tested for factors that we thought would have an impact on how self-esteem develops,” the study’s lead author, Ruth Yasemin Erol, said in news release from the American Psychological Association. “Understanding the trajectory of self-esteem is important to pinpointing and timing interventions that could improve people’s self-esteem.” The researchers found that conscientiousness, emotional stability, a feeling of mastery and being extraverted are key to predicting the direction a person’s self-esteem will take as they grow up, and that income did not affect this course. These findings, they pointed out, could assist health professionals in targeting treatments. We’re honestly surprised that older whites tend to lag in self-esteem in their latter years in comparison to blacks and hispanics. Hit up the comments section and state your piece. Source

Bossip Sports Exclusive: NBA Legend Dr. J And His Son Are Set To Relaunch The ABA!

Looks like the old school is going to make a big comeback! According to sports industry insiders Julius “Dr. J” Erving and his son Julius “J. Erv” Erving III, along with Ether Marketing owner Deon Taylor have acquired the rights to the American Basketball Association (ABA) in which Dr. J won 3 championships and four MVP awards while a member of the Virgina Squires. The Dr. and his music executive son own a sports marketing firm call 6 Sports, will re-launch the defunct league (Julius Erving III) Sources say that the resurgence of the ABA will be akin to the feeling of “old school” basketball with a slightly updated style. Hard-nosed play, free-flowing offense, and a overall more exciting brand of basketball minus the antics of an And1 or Harlem Globetrotters type of game. In addition, we are told that there will be a push for celebrities to own the teams outright to help draw attention to league. Of the twelve teams scheduled to participate in Miami, Atlanta, New York, New Jersey, Toronto, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Baltimore, Los Angeles, etc, high-profile stars like Drake, Leonardo DiCaprio, Lady Gaga, and others could possibly be the head honchos of their own city’s team. With the impending NBA lockout next year this league could easily be the best brand of professional basketball around in 2012. Players from all realms of basketball from college, current NBA players, to blackballed NBA players like Allen Iverson or Stephon Marbury. From what we understand there already several networks scrambling to retain the TV rights to air the games once everything is in place. Neither Dr. J, Julius Erving III, nor Deon Taylor have commented on the newly acquired league.

Elsewhere In The World: Egypt Fires Hundreds Of Dirty Cops For Killing Innocent Citizens During Anti-Mubarak Protests

If you think this means there’s a little more justice in Egypt, we hate to tell you that’s not the case. Over 600 Egyptian police officers were let go today, but it was more to try to get people complaining about the lack of justice for the fallen to shut up. Because really, not much has changed in Egypt since Hosni Mubarak left. The move came on the same day the military council ruling the country announced that parliamentary elections planned for September would be delayed until October or November. The postponement will help new political parties challenge the more experienced Muslim Brotherhood, which was expected to win at least 25% of the seats in parliament. Secular parties had pressed for a delay, fearing that a parliament heavily influenced by the Muslim Brotherhood’s conservative agenda would threaten human rights and religious tolerance. The Islamist organization’s reach may be further diminished by new regulations for choosing the 100-member assembly that will draft a new constitution. The firing of 669 police officers was the biggest reshuffle in the Interior Ministry’s history. It includes 505 brigadier generals, 82 colonels and 37 officers charged in the deaths of hundreds of protesters during the weeks-long revolution that overthrew Mubarak on Feb. 11. The announcement came during the sixth day of demonstrations in Tahrir Square by activists seeking to pressure the interim government to bring Mubarak and members of his regime to justice. The government and military council fear that the return of tents and banners to the square will further disrupt a nation facing labor strikes, a troubled economy and political unrest. “The firings are to gradually dismantle the police state we used to live in,” said Ammar Ali Hassan, head of the Middle East Center for research and political studies. “Protesters have succeeded in forcing security officials and the police into such changes, despite police efforts to keep the system they had before the Jan. 25 revolution.” So far, only one police officer has been found guilty of killing demonstrators last winter. He was sentenced to death. The country is awaiting the trials of Mubarak and former Interior Minister Habib Adli, both of whom have been accused in the deaths of protesters. We hope that slow crawl to justice doesn’t cost too many more lives. Source

Hi Hater: A New Poll Of Arab Countries Show That The U.S. And President Obama Are Being Viewed More Unfavorably Than Ever!

Not that we’re surprised, but those folks not F’in with us at ALL! The hope that the Arab world had not long ago put in the United States and President Obama has all but evaporated. Two and a half years after Obama came to office, raising expectations for change among many in the Arab world, favorable ratings of the United States have plummeted in the Middle East, according to a new poll conducted by Zogby International for the Arab American Institute Foundation. In most countries surveyed, favorable attitudes toward the United States dropped to levels lower than they were during the last year of the Bush administration. The killing of Osama bin Laden also worsened attitudes toward the United States. In Saudi Arabia, for instance, 30 percent of respondents said they had a favorable view of the United States (compared with 41 percent in 2009), while roughly 5 percent said the same in Egypt (compared with 30 percent in 2009). “The very high expectations that were created in 2009 – there’s been a letdown since then,” said James Zogby, the president and founder of the Arab American Institute, of which the foundation is an affiliate. Fewer than 10 percent of respondents described themselves as having a favorable view of Obama. The president’s ratings were the lowest on “the Palestinian issue” and “engagement with the Muslim world,” as the categories were described in the survey. To his credit the man conducting the poll, James Zogby, had this to say about the POTUS: “He didn’t get a magic wand when he took the oath office,” Zogby said. “They handed him a shovel to get out of a deep hole.” Ok so we’re not at the top of the Arab nations’ “most favorite” list. All we’re saying is, don’t start none, won’t be none… Source

Kush Chronic-les: A Denver Newspaper Has Employs A Writer To Pen Pot Reviews

This guy has got to be the envy of college students across the world… Denver is at the peak of a citywide pot boom. It all started after the U.S. Attorney General’s office — in a shift of policy since the Bush administration — announced in 2009 that it would not prosecute marijuana users if their state permits use of the drug for medical reasons. “It just blew up from there,” William Breathes tells weekends on All Things Considered host Guy Raz. Colorado had permitted use of medical marijuana since 2000, but now it had a stamp of approval from the federal government. So Breathes — employed by Westword, Denver’s weekly alternative newspaper — became perhaps the first professional marijuana critic in the country. William Breathes is his pen name, of course. Like a food critic, he remains anonymous to the businesses he reviews. Says “William” about his writing: “We have more than 100,000 licensed medical marijuana cardholders in the state,” he says. That’s fueled the growth of dispensaries, which now outnumber Starbucks in Denver. More than 300 dispensaries are in business citywide. That’s a lot of options for readers of Westword, Breathes says. “When I’m reviewing marijuana, I’m looking for how clean it’s grown, how well it’s grown,” he says. But he’s also reviewing the dispensary itself. “How would an older patient feel going into this place?” he says. “How would someone new to cannabis feel in this place? If it makes me feel icky going into a place, then it would probably make my grandma feel icky. And there’s plenty of grandmas around the Denver community with medical marijuana cards going to these dispensaries.” Damn Denver, talk about Rocky Mountain “high”. Wonder does Mr. Breathes get the munchies, fall asleep, and miss his deadlines? Source
