End Of Days: Tornado Shuts Down St. Louis Airport

Another local weather emergency makes national headlines. The National Weather Service confirmed a tornado struck the airport, and it was conducting a survey of other possible tornadoes, forecaster Scott Truett told CNN. The region was receiving more rainfall Saturday. A tornado warning for the airport was issued at 7:36 p.m. Friday, about 35 minutes before the twister struck. Truett said “one parent thunderstorm” formed near Jefferson City, Missouri, on Friday and moved east toward St. Louis. The tornado that struck the airport may first have touched down in New Melle, about 30 miles to the west. About 30,000 homes in the county remained without power, and five shelters had been established. Major highways were open, but officials advised people to stay home. Searchers were going door to door in several communities. “We’re looking for the family that may be missing,” Earls told CNN. Inspections of buildings will take several days and hauling off debris will take longer. “We are doing a second door-to-door search right now,” said Bridgeton Police Chief Don Hood. So far, everyone has been accounted for and there were no reported injuries, he said. Many homes in the town were heavily damaged. Most of the city was without power and some roads were not passable, Hood told CNN. Airport officials were relieved that the severe storm Friday evening injured only a relative few passengers. Five people were taken to hospitals for minor injuries and about a dozen others were treated at the airport for cuts and scrapes after the storm struck around 8:15 p.m. Friday, said airport spokesman Jeff Lea. “It’s amazing given the number of people and the amount of damage,” he said. Airport Director Rhonda Hamm-Niebruegge said one terminal was in good shape and the other also will be able to provide service Sunday. A few hundred passengers were stranded, but most stayed at hotels, she said. Concourse C in the main terminal, however, will take a while to repair and carriers will have to use other locations in the airport, she said. Concourse C is used by American Airlines, Frontier, AirTran and Cape Air. A van was left hanging precariously off the edge of a terminal parking garage. A video posted on YouTube showed strong winds pushing a Southwest Airlines plane away from a walkway and passengers moving quickly away from tall windows, dark clouds moving in. Passengers were hit with flying glass and debris as winds ripped off part of the roof in the airport’s C concourse, CNN affiliate KSDK said. “All the windows were busted. … The airport looks like a war zone,” Elizabeth Rastberger, 32, told CNN’s iReport. All this stuff can’t be coincidental, man. Source

You Can’t Be Serious…Kemba Walker Admits To Just Recently Reading His First Full Book Ever!!

We appreciate your honesty sir, but you certainly are an ignorant mickiefickie… New York – UConn’s star guard concedes that he’s only read one book cover-to-cover in his entire life… and yet somehow managed to complete college in three years. Earlier this month, Kemba Walker led the University of Connecticut Huskies to victory in the NCAA men’s basketball championship. The hardworking star guard is now slated to go pro, and is expected to earn a degree after just three years at UConn. Given the number of college stars who turn pro without graduating, Walker’s academic commitment had been widely celebrated… until now. In a Sports Illustrated interview, the 20-year-old made a “ridiculous” admission: He’s just finished his first book, William C. Rhoden’s Forty Million Dollar Slaves: The Rise, Fall, and Redemption of the Black Athlete. “That’s true,” Walker told SI. “You can write that. It is the first book I’ve ever read.” What does Walker’s rather short reading list say about the state of college athletics? This is unbelievable: “How does anyone graduate from a Division I university — in three years, no less! — without ever finishing a single book in his life?” asks Dashiell Bennett at Business Insider. Simply remarkable. But, hey, at least the one book he has read probably has a chapter on education, or lack thereof, in college athletics. It shows just how entitled college athletes are: “I’m sick of pundits saying these kids should be paid on top of being given, oh, just a couple hundred thousand dollars in scholarship money,” says Matt Kiebus at Death + Taxes. Not only do college athletes get “an invaluable college education for free,” they also, it seems, have to put in a fraction of the academic effort as their peers. Who else but a celebrated athlete could skate through college without reading a book? Teachers and coaches are also complicit: “Walker’s teachers and coaches — both in high school and college — had to have been well aware of any academic shortcomings, but all were ignored in order for these schools to have a winning team,” says Hayat Mohamed at The Root. This is “seriously wrong,” and Walker alone is not to blame. “He was clearly robbed of a true education,” and now, “yet another undereducated black man joins the league — way to go, NBA.” Let it be known that there is nothing cool about this at all. Everyone doesn’t have the same thirst for reading and we understand that, but to be 20 years old and only read one book in your life is just plain sad. Get it together please. Source

Don’t Get Caught Slipping: Sexting The Proper Way

Sexting. When this phenomenon first stepped on the scene, it was for the teeny boppers. Parents were running around in a tizzy and news outlets had a field day trying to “uncover” this new fad. Well now that all the dust has settled, women, emphasis on women, are starting to realize that sexting can be yet another tool in the “keep-him-interested” arsenal. It’s taken off; yet, even some of us grown folks could stand a lesson or two in sexting etiquette. Class and sexting may seem like two conflicting worlds, but there’s always a way to be a lady about yours…until you get home. ( Continue reading… )

Bolitics: Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer Puts The Smackdown On “Birther Bill”, Says It’s Insulting To President Obama

Wow, for a second there we thought “they” were going to let this slide. Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer vetoed a controversial ‘birther’ bill on Monday night that would have required presidential candidates to submit a long-form birth certificate in order to be on the ballot. Approved in the state legislature last Thursday, the bill called for candidates to produce two or more qualifying documents in the absence of a long-form birth certificate, which include a “hospital birth record, early baptismal certificate, circumcision certificate, early census record or postpartum medical record signed by whoever delivered the child,” the Arizona Republic reported. The legislation was a clear attack on President Barack Obama, who has been the target of rumors he was not born in the United States since he began his first presidential campaign. Brewer, notorious for being a hard-line conservative, shot down the bill on Monday as going “too far” even for the red state. Brewer says: “I never imagined being presented with a bill that could require candidates for President of the greatest and most powerful nation on earth to submit their ‘early baptismal or circumcision certificates’…this is a bridge too far,” she said in a statement. “This measure creates significant new problems while failing to do anything constructive for Arizona.” President Obama took a second to brush the salt off his shoulders that these haters been throwing. “There’s been an effort to go at me in a way that is politically expedient in the short term for Republicans but creates I think a problem for them when they want to actually run in the general election, where most people feel pretty confident the President was born where he says he was, in Hawaii,” Obama said. Did this Negro just say “go at me”??? We LOVE it! We’re glad that Gov. Brewer is a decent Republican person and had enough sense to shoot down this stupid a** bill. Source

Is It Finally Kelly Rowland’s Turn To Shine?

For some music fans, it may be hard for former Destiny’s Child member Kelly Rowland to get from underneath Beyoncé’s shadow. Despite being without a label for almost a year, Rowland has been recording songs for an as-of-yet-to-be titled album through Universal Motown Records. But don’t be mistaken—it wasn’t as if Rowland took a hiatus from music like Beyoncé has for the past year. Ms. Kelly has chose to grind. But with the growing murmurs that B is coming back bigger, better and blacker than ever this summer, will all of Rowland’s work be in vain? After collaborating to record the theme song for the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa, Rowland toured Europe, Asia, and Australia. She earned critical acclaim from the electro-pop community for her work with David Guetta, and as one of the headlining acts of the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Party with George Michael. You Might Need To Move: The Top 10 Most Violent States (New York Didn’t Make The List!)

We were a little surprised on this one. The Institute for Economics and Peace just released its newest U.S. Peace Index, which rates states by their level of peacefulness. They come up with this list by looking at five factors: (1) number of homicides per 100,000 people, (2) number of violent crimes per 100,000 people, (3) number of people in jail per 100,000 people, (4) number of police officers per 100,000 people and (5) general availability of small arms. The national average is 2.056, almost a full point lower than #10 on this list. Three of these states we might have guessed would make, but the others threw us for a loop. Flip through and let us know if any of them shocked you.

For Your Info: What Is A Cloud And What Does It Mean For You Music Lovers Out There??

Recently the tech world has been absolutely buzzing about “cloud” systems and music. Amazon has charged ahead with theirs, claiming that they need no license from the record labels, and Google is reportedly, furtively, working on their own system as well. If so, this could be the latest power move from the tech scene which could make for yet more waves within the already turbulent music industry. But given that Black music has consistently been so coveted (helped by tech advances in ringtones to downloads) just how could this development affect the young artists behind the creativity and who constitute a chunk of our Black GDP?
