Health care reform also touches tanning beds, restaurant menus

(CNN) — The health care bill signed into law Tuesday by President Obama is the nation's most sweeping social legislation in four decades. But it also includes some smaller changes that will directly affect consumers. These include taxes on indoor tanning services, requirements for restaurants to post calorie information and changes to flexible spending accounts. Restaurants There are 540 calories in a Big Mac and 670 calories in a Whopper. Nutritional information will be unavoidable when customers step up to the counter to order. The health care law requires chain restaurants that have more than 20 locations to display calorie information next to the food item on the standard menu. The Food and Drug Administration has the task of establishing more specific regulations and determining when these changes go into effect. The health care law requires “succinct statement concerning suggested daily caloric intake” that are “posted prominently on the menu and designed to enable the public to understand, in the context of a total daily diet, the significance of the caloric information that is provided on the menu.” Dr. Kelly Brownell, a Yale University psychology professor at the Rudd Center for Food Policy and Obesity, conducted research that found that consumers choose lower-calorie food when their menus contained caloric information and a statement that said “an average person consumes 2,000 calories a day.” “A lot of people don't know what it means to have 600 calories,” he said. “They have no context and the legislation requires that anchor statement.” Nutrition facts would also be required to be posted on vending machine products and drive-thru menus. Temporary specials appearing on the menu for less than 60 days, condiments and test market foods are exempt. “Consumers have the right to this info whether or not it makes a difference on the diet,” Brownell said. “But I believe the data will ultimately show that it does.” YAY! There's going to be a food revolution! *throws confetti and dances naked under the stars* added by: Almibry

But It really took me a while mentally to get back to that routine.” Healthy habits “I need structure. I need to get enough sleep. I need to make sure that I’m having regular workouts, and that they put in time for hair and makeup and nails. I have to get facials, because when you’re traveling, the skin doesn’t look as nice.” She loves “My legs never gain weight and that’s the only part that never changes.” She Hates “I’m too short. Lady Gaga Tour Losing Money

Lady Gaga New York Magazine published an article on singer Lady Gaga, now being called Lady CaCa and alternatively Lady HaHa online, due to her odd antics and strange, contrived fashion sense and in it they revealed the person behind the persona dressed and behaved nothing like the singer we see today. The article accurately paints her as a creation of producer and then boyfriend, Rob Fusari, who has since sued her for $30 million dollars, in a breach of contract dispute, regarding the 20% stake he holds in her company. The article gives a very unflattering glimpse at Gaga, who stated, “I don’t like Los Angeles. The people are awful and terribly shallow, and everybody wants to be famous but nobody wants to play the game. I’m from New York. I will kill to get what I need .” In a related item, it was reported her current tour, that has angered parents in Australia, due to its vulgar language and crass sexual content, is actually in the red, as Gaga is demanding a costly stage show that does not recoup its costs after ticket sales. Lady Gaga: The Early Years March 29, 2010, 12:15 PM ET – …Among the noteworthy details: Gaga’s current tour is reportedly losing money (as much as $3 million, according to insiders cited in the piece) because she refuses to cut corners on the elaborate stage show… Grigoriadis on Gaga’s interview presentation: “Gaga spoke carefully in a very odd accent—some combination of Madonna as Madge and a robot, an affect enhanced by the fact that she refused to remove her lightly tinted sunglasses over the course of two hours.” Gaga on her diet: “Pop stars should not eat.” Former Gaga producer Rob Fusari on her fashion faux-pas: “Gaga wasn’t into fashion at this point: She liked leggings and sweatshirts, maybe with a shoulder out. “A couple times, she came to the studio in sweatpants, and I said, ‘Really, Stef?’ ” says Fusari. “ ‘What if I had Clive Davis in here today? I should call the session right now. Prince doesn’t pick up ice cream at the 7-Eleven looking like Chris Rock.”… http://blogs.wsj.com Growing Up Gaga http://nymag.com Continue reading

Answer to Weight Reduction Now Promises An Even Brighter Solution!

digitaljournal   Weight Loss is almost synonymous to an unwinnable battle. It is a basic knowledge that in order to reduce, one must eat less and exercise more, but in this day and age where your life is juggling job stress and family crises, the temptation of eating convenient fast and fatty foods encourages you to do the opposite. A healthy diet and regular exercise are certainly the best weapons against weight gain, but the fact is that sometimes they aren’t enough. And that’s where science may someday be able to help. In research laboratories around the country, researchers are studying closely at the biological mechanisms of obesity, finding the solution why some bodies store fat so readily, and why others are better at burning the calories they consume. They are discovering a surprising array of metabolic and physiologic factors that contribute to weight.  Your intestines are teeming with bacteria that can either promote or curb weight gain. The type of hyperactive fat that is called brown fat which is abundant in newborns — that actually burns a lot of calories, unlike the traditional white fat that adults commonly store in their midsection. These and other findings about the biology of weight gain could be the answer to slimming our collective waistline, if scientists can someday use them to create better treatments for obesity. And we could use the help: in the decade between 1991 and 2000, the prevalence of overweight adults in the U.S. increased by 61%, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Last year, 30% of children in 30 states tipped the scales as either overweight or obese. “With hundreds of millions of obese people that we’ve got in our country now, physicians can’t treat them all,” says Dr. Michael Jensen, professor of medicine at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester. “We just don’t have enough physicians.” If the latest findings from obesity labs — in both humans and animals — prove as practical as they are promising, they could someday make the job of fighting obesity easier for physicians and patients, and help all of us get an extra boost from our diet and exercise programs. Is Kirstie Alley’s New Weight Loss Program a Scientology Scam? [Scams]

Anti-Scientology campaign group Anonymous, and some blogs, are airing accusations that Scientologist Kirstie Alley ‘s new weight loss program, Organic Liaison , is based on quackery preached by L. Ron Hubbard, and that the company has links to the ‘church’. Alley, who is herself still not at her stated target weight of 140lbs, has been shilling for her new venture on Oprah, and it features heavily (pun intended) in her upcoming A&E reality series, Kirstie Alley’s Big Life (pun intended there too, we’re sure). Anonymous have found links between Organic Liaison LLC and Scientology — the firm’s accountant, Saul B Lipson, is a known Scientologist whose company is approved by the church and based near its headquarters in Clearwater, Florida. Along with utter quacks like Hollywood mystical doctor Soram Khalsa , the board features Michelle Seward, an active Scientologist. While this is not enough to support Anonymous’ claim that money from Organic Liaison will be channeled directly into the church, it does lend credence to the assertion that the program itself is, to some extent, based on a Scientology plan called the purification rundown . This was prescribed by L. Ron Hubbard himself, but criticized for being at best bullshit that claims to detox through vitamins, minerals, drinking vegetable oil and sitting in saunas, and at worst dangerous. As it is part of the Narconon program, that Alley has said helped her break a cocaine addiction, it is fairly safe to presume she has been through it. Organic Liaison offers to combine an organic food diet with “organic and natural diet supplements that replenish your body with essential vitamins, minerals and nutrients without the pangs of starvation or cravings you may have felt on other diet plans.” It’s certainly priced like a Scientology scam. Membership costs $10 per month, or $89 for a year, and the package of supplements, called Rescue Me, is a whopping $139 per month. One you’ve ordered the kit, it auto-ships and bills your card again every month until you stop it. The kit contains three supplements, Rescue Me (claimed detox and appetite suppresser), Release Me (claimed relaxant) and Nightingale (claimed sleep aid), featuring many cheaply-available vitamins, minerals, amino acids, herbs and aids like vitamin C, folic acid, L-Tryptophan, fiber, green tea, calcium and magnesium. The company also offers other supplements — notably Relieve Me, an anti-constipation supplement that Anonymous claim is related to Cal-Mag, a noxious-sounding dietary liquid developed by Hubbard that contains calcium, magnesium, vinegar and hot water. And that led some of those church members forced to drink it to, um, relieve themselves. The evidence, while suggestive, is by no means conclusive. What is safe to say is that thousands, millions even, of people will be over-paying for unproven herbal supplements combined with a common-sense diet. We’ll do some of our own digging into Organic Liaision, and its connection to Scientology, and see if it comes back Clear. [ Pic via A&E ]

WTF Alert: Roseanne Barr Randomly Blames Suicide of Marie Osmond’s Son on Sexual Preference

Late last month, the 17-year old son of Marie Osmond jumped from his Los Angeles apartment building and killed himself . It was a tragic event and the reaction of most celebrities was to pass along their sympathy to the family before politely leaving the Osmonds alone. Except for Roseanne Barr, that is. The former sitcom star has taken to her blog and randomly cited Marie’s homosexuality as the basis for his death, placing a lot of blame on the Osmond’s church and pretty much calling Marie a liar. She wrote the following: marie osmonds poor gay son killed himself… because he had been told how wrong and how sick he was every day of his life by his church and the people in it. Calling that “depression” is a lie! Yet the Osmonds still talk lovingly about their church, saying nothing about its extremely anti-gay Crusade. Marie also has a gay daughter! Hey, I want her and all the gay kids in the world to know that they are just fine being gay and that they deserve love and respect instead of insults and rebuke! I have gay people in my family and my circle of friends and I am kicking bigot ass and taking names! She continued: Marie please don’t talk about how your faith in your church has helped you get through this one! Please get some integrity and tell that church of yours that you will leave it and stop giving it ten percent of your money if they don’t stop trying to destroy your kids’ and all gay people’s civil rights and dreams and hopes!! G-d is trying to use you for something good and this is your opportunity! Your church is wrong and on the wrong wrong wrong side of things! Get as vocal about that as you are about your diet. G-d bless you too, Marie. The only reaction we can come up with to this: WTF?!? Who calls out the mother of a son that just committed suicide?!? THG readers, send in your most hateful judgments on Roseanne right now…

Bill Clinton Released From Hospital After Surgery

Bill Clinton was released this morning from a New York hospital after having two stents into a clogged coronary artery Thursday after complaining of chest pains. The one-hour procedure went smoothly, according to the former President’s cardiologist, and the 63-year-old was discharged this morning “in excellent health.” Clinton will soon return to his work on Haiti’s relief and long-term recovery, his office said, and will both recover fully and resume his “very active lifestyle.” Bill, who could have suffered a heart attack had this gone untreated, had the heart surgery at the same place where he had quadruple bypass surgery in 2004. “This was not a result of either his lifestyle or his diet, which have been excellent,” Clinton’s cardiologist, Alan Schwartz, told reporters from the hospital steps. A few stents won’t slow a good former president down. Schwartz said putting in stents were just another step in an ongoing process: “Just as illnesses have natural histories, treatments have natural histories.” Clinton has been working at a grueling pace since the January 12 earthquake in Haiti, but says his demanding schedule did not contribute to heart problems. Clinton, the U.N. special envoy to Haiti, is overseeing the U.S. response with former president George W. Bush and has been there twice in recent weeks. Clinton was working on issues related to Haiti when he felt chest pains. As he was being wheeled into the operating room, he was still on a conference call. Pretty standard for this guy. Bill’s daughter, Chelsea , joined him at the hospital, an aide said, as did wife and Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton. President Barack Obama called Clinton yesterday evening and wished him “a speedy recovery,” a White House aide said. THG wishes Big Daddy the same.
