Avril Lavigne ‘Really Excited To Be Back’ With ‘What The Hell’

Song’s 3-D video will premiere Sunday. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Kelly Marino Avril Lavigne Photo: MTV News Avril Lavigne is as bratty as ever on her new single, the catchy, almost bubbly “What the Hell.” The lead single off Lavigne’s upcoming release, Goodbye Lullaby , due March 8, has not only been burning up the iTunes charts, but it’s also gotten some Twitter love from Kanye West and Kim Kardashian. “I’m just really excited to be back,” the former teen star told MTV News. “It’s been a few years, and I’m excited to see that ‘What the Hell’ [is] doing good so far on iTunes and [with] the fans. The response has been really great, so I’m happy.” The song also just had an impressive debut on the Billboard charts , landing at #6 on the Digital Songs chart, beating Kanye West and Jay-Z’s new song, “H.A.M.” This Sunday, fans will finally get the chance to see the clip for the video when it debuts on ABC Family. “The music video for ‘What the Hell’: It’s kind of a guy chasing me around, and I hop into a random cab, and he’s chasing me,” Lavigne explained. “And I go through a clothing store and he chases me, but at the end of the video, it’s really just me having a bunch of fun with him, and he’s my boyfriend, so I like him in the end.” The video is special because it was shot in 3-D. “The music video’s in 3-D, and my favorite part of the video is the rock-out scene at the end where I jump onstage and I’m with my band,” she said. “When we shot it and I got to watch it back in 3-D with the glasses and actually you can see the crowd’s hands and it felt like you were live in a crowd, so it was kind of cool.” Are you a fan of “What the Hell”? Taylor Swift Tapes Thank-You Message For ‘Mine’ Success

Country/pop star ties a Billboard record with single’s #3 debut. By James Dinh Taylor Swift Photo: Stephen Lovekin/Getty Images It’s only been a week since Taylor Swift’s “Mine” hit radio , but the lead single from her new album, Speak Now, is already making a splash on the upcoming Billboard Hot 100 with a #3 debut. According to Billboard, “Mine” makes chart history since Swift is only the second female artist in the history of the Hot 100 chart to debut multiple songs (“Mine” and “Today Was a Fairy Tale”) in the top five during a one-year time frame. Mariah Carey also accomplished this feat with her hits “Fantasy” and “One Sweet Day” in 1995. While “Mine” wasn’t able to dethrone Eminem and Rihanna’s “Love the Way You Lie” from the #1 spot, she is on top of the Hot Digital Songs chart with 297,000 in downloads. Swift recorded a video message thanking country radio for all the support, saying, “Konnichiwa! I just wanted to say hi to everybody, all my friends on country radio. I’m about to play for 45,000 people in Japan. Wish me luck. Thank you for the first week. I love you.” Fans will get their first glimpse of Swift performing “Mine” during a pre-recorded performance on the upcoming TV special “CMA Music Festival: Country’s Night to Rock,” which airs September 1. Swift’s highly anticipated new album is set to hit stores October 25. Are you excited to see Taylor’s upcoming performances and video for “Mine”? Share your thoughts below! Katy Perry’s ‘California Gurls’ Makes History In Rise To #1

‘Gurls’ is the fastest-rising single released by a Capitol Records artist in more than 40 years. By James Montgomery Katy Perry in “California Gurls” Photo: Capitol She may have come up short against Lady Gaga in MTV News’ 2010 Summer Jam contest , but there’s one place Katy Perry is clearly #1: the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart. On Wednesday (June 8), Billboard announced that Perry’s “California Gurls” will be #1 on the Hot 100 chart — following her performance of the song at the MTV Movie Awards Sunday night — making it all the way to the top spot in just four short weeks — and, in the process, making a little history too. “Gurls” becomes the fastest-rising single released by an artist signed to Capitol Records in more than 40 years, tying a mark set way back in 1967 by “Ode to Billie Joe,” a song released by Capitol artist Bobbie Gentry. Five months before that, “Penny Lane,” the iconic single by the Beatles also made it to #1 in four weeks. Perry’s hit made it to the top of the Hot 100 (which is based on radio plays and sales) thanks in part to its massive digital sales. The song tallied more than 318,000 downloads this week alone — up 18 percent from the previous week, according to Nielsen SoundScan — and it will top the Digital Songs chart for a third straight week. “Gurls” also jumped from #10 to #6 on the Radio Songs chart. The song is Perry’s second Hot 100 #1, following her breakout single “I Kissed a Girl,” which topped the chart for seven weeks beginning in July 2008. It also gave Snoop Dogg — who guests on the track — his third Hot 100 #1, after 2004’s “Drop It Like It’s Hot” and Akon’s “I Wanna Love You,” on which he guested, in 2006.
