Diplomats Say, ‘Together, We Can Always Do Better’

Reunited Dipset show up for ‘RapFix Live,’ where Jim Jones says he’s glad to have his ‘brothers back.’ By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Sway Calloway The Diplomats Photo: MTV News When it comes to the reunited Diplomats , the Harlem collective’s spat was largely between frontman Cam’ron and capo Jim Jones. Cam and Jim tossed barbs at each other during interviews, though they were civil enough to acknowledge their childhood friendship. And while Juelz Santana remained neutral for a long time (he eventually sided with Jones), it was Freekey Zekey who constantly urged the pair to put aside their differences. “Zeke never had a problem with anyone, so he was always trying to get everybody to talk,” Cam’ron told host Sway during the Dipset’s appearance on “RapFix Live” on Thursday (January 20). “I think everyone just needed to come to an understanding. We could all do great by ourselves, but if we all together, we can always do better. Like Snoop said, I can do whatever I want by myself but when I’m with Dr. Dre, it’s breakthroughs, it’s miracles, it’s stars and it’s all types of things in the air.” The rift between Cam and Jones lasted roughly three years until last year when the two announced they’d reconciled; in April 2010 they revealed they were in negotiations for a new record deal. A month later, in Atlanta, the two made their most pronounced appearance together in years when they joined forces at a Converse-sponsored hoops tournament , where they took first place. Since then, the Harlem crew have been back to their old tricks — with an added wrinkle in new affiliate and Cam prot

MTV’s New Awards Show Will Honor Digital Music, Media

‘Expect to see something that you wouldn’t typically see,’ MTV rep says. By James Montgomery Photo: MTV When it comes to awards shows, MTV has spent the past three decades breaking the mold. Come spring, they’ll try to invent a new mold altogether. On Wednesday, the network revealed it is planning an entirely new awards show, one aimed at honoring digital music and media. And unlike the long-running Video Music Awards and Movie Awards — which lampoon traditionally stodgy fetes like the Grammys and the Oscars — this time out, there’s no pre-existing blueprint to go up against. This will be an entirely new undertaking. “I think the idea we’re trying to convey is: We have the current heavyweight champions of music and movie awards shows, and we love them — they’re a great place for celebrating music and movies — but we also think something new is going on,” Dermot McCormack, head of digital for MTV Music and Logo Group, told MTV News on Thursday (January 20). “The industry has evolved into a digital medium, and fans have evolved right along with it. So we figured it was time to re-examine how we reward achievement in these new mediums.” McCormack said the still-untitled show will premiere in the spring, and will air live on the Internet, on social media sites and mobile devices — but will not be broadcast. “This is a tent pole born from the digital medium, so the rules of television don’t really apply here,” he said. “We’re a multi-screen company, and everything we do should take advantage of all our screens. This show may air, but it definitely will not be something live from 8 to 10 p.m. on MTV. One of the great opportunities with digital is that we remove constraints. And when we do, we think great creativity will show up.” And while the awards categories are still being determined, McCormack said fans can expect to see their favorite music apps and blogs honored in a way that’s befitting of MTV’s awards-show legacy. “Expect to see something that you wouldn’t typically see,” he said. “The idea here is to create a response to this great renaissance that’s happening, the activity and revolution in the music business. It’s not only about where music is today, but where it’s going too. We want to stake a claim in that while still dipping into our heritage. When the first VMAs happened [in 1984], you had Dan Aykroyd coming out smoking a cigarette. That’s the same spirit we’d like to capture here.” What ideas do you have for MTV’s new digital awards show? Tell us in the comments below!

“Last Train To Paris” Isn’t Exactly Raking In That Dirty Money

Last week, Diddy was all proud that his heavy promo convinced 100,000 people to go pick up Last Train To Nowhere. This week? Not so much, we think. The album dropped from number 7 to number 44 on the Billboard Hot 200 charts, after moving roughly 30,000 copies in week two. It’s gonna be a slow crawl to Platinum for Dirty Money. But it’s not all bad news for Urban music. The week’s highest new entry comes from Jamie Foxx’s “Best Night Of My Life,” which parties it up at No. 6 with 144,000. It’s Foxx’s third straight set to see a late December release, following “Unpredictable” (issued on Dec. 20, 2005) and “Intuition” (Dec. 16, 2008). The latter set opened at No. 3 with 265,000 while the earlier album climbed in at No. 2 with 598,000 (before hitting No. 1 the week following). Eminem’s “Recovery” is right behind Foxx, flying 15 rungs to No. 7 with 137,000 (up 100%). It benefits from sale pricing in the iTunes Store and also zips 15-1 on the Digital Albums chart with a whopping 513% jump in sales. Nicki Minaj’s “Pink Friday” stands at No. 8 for a second week, selling 133,000 (up 36%). Keyshia Cole’s “Calling All Hearts” is the list’s second biggest debut, starting at No. 9 with 128,000. Her last album, “A Different Me,” was released, coincidentally enough, on the same day as Foxx’s last effort, on Dec. 16, 2008. “Different” launched at No. 2 with 322,000, one step ahead of “Intuition’s” 265,000. Both albums were blocked from No. 1 that week by the woman who reigns this week: Taylor Swift. Her “Fearless” set was in its third non-consecutive week atop the list, selling 330,000. Closing out the top 10 on the Billboard 200 is Rihanna’s “Loud,” climbing one spot to No. 10 with 111,000 (up 33%). Right behind her at No. 11 is the debut of Keri Hilson’s sophomore effort “No Boys Allowed” with 102,000. Hilson’s first release, “In a Perfect World,” debuted and peaked at No. 4 in April of 2009 with 94,000. We definitely didn’t expect Keri to break 100,000 copies her first week. Guess the ho sh*t paid off. Source
