‘Hunger Games’ Director Gary Ross Out For Sequel

‘After difficult but sincere consideration, I have decided not to direct ‘Catching Fire,’ ‘ Ross says in a statement. By Katie Byrne and Kara Warner Gary Ross Photo: Dimitrios Kambouris/ Getty Images A roller-coaster week for “The Hunger Games” just got even bumpier: Director Gary Ross has officially announced he won’t direct the sequel, “Catching Fire.” The week began positively enough, with “The Hunger Games” topping the box office for the third weekend in a row, earning nearly $303 million since its debut. But that news was quickly followed Monday with a surprising Playlist story claiming Ross wouldn’t return for the movie adaptation of “Catching Fire,” a report that has now been confirmed via statements from Ross himself and “Games” studio Lionsgate. “Despite recent speculation in the media, and after difficult but sincere consideration, I have decided not to direct ‘Catching Fire,’ ” Ross said in his statement. “As a writer and a director, I simply don’t have the time I need to write and prep the movie I would have wanted to make because of the fixed and tight production schedule. “I loved making ‘The Hunger Games’ — it was the happiest experience of my professional life,” the statement continued. “Lionsgate was supportive of me in a manner that few directors ever experience in a franchise: they empowered me to make the film I wanted to make and backed the movie in a way that requires no explanation beyond the remarkable results. And contrary to what has been reported, negotiations with Lionsgate have not been problematic. They have also been very understanding of me through this difficult decision.” Lionsgate echoed Ross’ disappointment in the ended “Games” partnership: “We’re very sorry that Gary Ross has chosen not to direct Catching Fire. We were really looking forward to making the movie with him. He did an incredible job on the first film and we are grateful for his work. This will not be the end of our relationship, as we consider Ross to be part of the Lionsgate family and look forward to working with him in the future.” Ross’ heartfelt sentiments did not end with his thanks to the studio. “I also cannot say enough about the people I worked with: Producer Nina Jacobson, a great collaborator and a true friend; the brilliant Suzanne Collins, who entrusted us with her most amazing and important story; the gifted and remarkable Jennifer Lawrence whose performance exceeded my wildest expectations, and the rest of the incredible cast, whom I am proud to call my friends,” he added in his statement. “To the fans I want to say thank you for your support your faith, your enthusiasm and your trust. Hard as this may be to understand I am trying to keep that trust with you. Thank you all. It’s been a wonderful experience.” There will likely be a long list of directors gunning to fill Ross’ shoes, but until we receive word of an official list of names, we have a very well-thought-out list of our own we hope Lionsgate considers. Let’s Decipher Adam McKay’s Hints About the Plot of Anchorman 2

Since Will Ferrell dropped the late-night bombshell that Anchorman 2 was a go the other week, the world’s been wondering: What has Ron Burgundy been up to since 2004’s Anchorman ? Speaking with AM760/Salon , co-writer/director Adam McKay dropped a few hints about the sequel, which is currently being scripted. “I don’t want to give away too much, but I’ll just give a couple pieces of ideas that we’ve kicked around. Keep in mind we’re still writing the story, but I’ll say one phrase for you: custody battle. I’ll give you that. I’ll give you one other one: bowling for dollars.” So… any guesses? It has been eight real world years since Ron wooed his lady co-anchor Veronica Corningstone with his sweet jazz flute stylings circa 1975, so assuming the same amount of time has passed in Anchorman years it’d make sense if they now have a little Burgundy running around. Mind you, this is pure speculation, but just think about that for a second: A MINI RON BURGUNDY. YES PLEASE. Maybe the pressures of co-hosting World News Center drove a wedge in Ron and Veronica’s relationship and they’re fighting over their kid, Kramer vs. Kramer -style and the only way to get his family back is with… bowling? That’s all I’ve got with so little to go on. So have at it, Movieliners; what could Ron Burgundy be up to in Anchorman 2 — and what would you like to see from him and the rest of the Channel Four News Team? [AM760/ Salon ]

Infamous Katherine Heigl-Tom Sizemore Bomb Zyzzyx Road to Be Resurrected This Summer

After making just $30 in its initial limited release theatrical run in 2006, Leo Grillo’s indie noir Zyzzyx Road — which starred an on-the-cusp Katherine Heigl and an in-decline Tom Sizemore and also managed to misspell the California desert locale it was named for , unless that was intentional — will be released digitally this summer by the intrepid folks at GoDigital. “We love the story behind this film and are thrilled to be part of what we believe will be a happy ending, I am confident it will make us more than $30,” said GoDigital Director of Marketing Barry Daffurn of the distribution coup. Ba-dum ching! Oh, humor. What’s not funny: Actually watching any part of Zyzzyx Road . Here’s the trailer, see for yourself! Every time you curse Heigl for making yet another inane chick flick , just remember: She’s already paid her penance in advance. Zyzzyx Road will be available digitally via GoDigital this summer. The Wanted Tease Guest MC, Video For ‘Chasing The Sun’

‘There’s an American rapper, potentially, and he’s very good and I can’t mention who he is,’ Tom Parker hints to MTV News. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Kelly Marino The Wanted Photo: MTV News The Wanted dropped their swagged-out party track “Chasing the Sun” this week, and despite any literal interpretations one might expect from a video for a song with that title, the guys say they want to go a bit more fun and less obvious. “We’re gonna be flying through space, literally, running after the sun the whole three minutes,” Nathan Sykes joked to MTV News after they stepped off the “American Idol” stage Thursday night. But bandmate Jay McGuiness quickly clarified that’s not the case at all. “We saw a lot of treatments and a lot of them took it literally, somewhere chasing the sun,” he said. “But we decided we weren’t into that. We worked with a director called Director X, so we know it’s going to be a good party. But we’ll leave the details until we release it.” Director X has already hooked up with the guys on two of their videos, the sun-drenched “Glad You Came” and the darker clip for “Warzone.” “Chasing the Sun” is the lead single from the Wanted’s forthcoming U.S. debut , set for release later this month, and Max George is counting down the days until it drops. “We’ve got an EP coming out in the 24th of April that’s all ready to go. I wish it was out now, really,” he said. “We’re really excited for it to come out. Hopefully all our fans will love the other songs. We’ve got some singles we’ve done in the U.K. We’ve got some new songs we’ve written. I think they’ll like it, I hope.” And while the album is done, Tom Parker noted there could be a last-minute guest on it. “For ‘Chasing the Sun’ there’s an American rapper, potentially, and he’s very good and I can’t mention who he is,” he teased. The guys added he’s someone who loves cats but noted it’s not Cee Lo Green, who frequently chills with his cat Purrfect on “The Voice.” Sykes said the rapper would appear on “just the single version; the full version of the track will be on the EP. Potentially the single version is with this unnamed rapper. He’s very talented.” What is your favorite song by the Wanted? Let us know in the comments! Related Artists The Wanted

‘Titanic 3D’: The Reviews Are In!

Critics are overwhelmingly impressed with James Cameron’s 3-D conversion. By Kevin P. Sullivan Kate Winslet at the “Titanic 3D” premiere Photo: Getty Images James Cameron has never been known for taking things halfway, and the new 3-D conversion of his epic “Titanic” is no exception. Cameron and his team spent years adding computer-generated depth to each frame to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the tragedy. When the director screened 20 minutes of footage for journalists last October, they responded with warm reviews, but now the final product is ready to set sail. Cameron has always stood by 3-D technology for film, through seemingly endless criticism, and now the reviews for his latest 3-D product are coming in as raves. Drew McWeeny from HitFix doled out high praise for “Titanic 3D,” calling it “the very best 3-D conversion of a film that I’ve seen so far.” Though the quality of the 3-D impressed McWeeny overall, he concluded that nothing about the new version of “Titanic” is really that different. “Adding 3-D to that works technically, but I’m not sure it changed anything, one way or another, emotionally,” he said. When converting a film as iconic as “Titanic,” expectations for the re-release can be very high. Lou Lumenick from the New York Post applauded Cameron’s use of 3-D, saying that it even enhanced the quality of the film. “James Cameron’s spectacular new 3-D version of ‘Titanic’ is everything I’d hoped for, and more,” Lumenick said. “He judiciously — and sometimes with great subtlety — uses the technology to make a great film even greater.” Lumenick said he found “Titanic 3D” “less of a strain on the eyes” than Cameron’s “Avatar.” While most 3-D movies come with complaints from the critics, post-conversion tends to suffer a worse fate. Scott Mantz from “Access Hollywood,” however, wrote that the post work on “Titanic” surpasses even films made for the format. “But what’s amazing is that for a movie that was shot in 2-D, ‘Titanic’ looks amazing in 3-D — almost like it was meant to be in 3-D all along.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Titanic.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . The Human Centipede 3 Dispute: Legit Beef or Publicity Stunt?

Breaking news: The third installment of Tom Six ‘s Human Centipede saga — which the director promised would see 500 human beings stitched together… in America ! — may be in trouble. According to reports cobbled together through press releases and Twitter missives from Six and his Human Centipede star, Dieter Laser, the German actor took issue with certain script elements, causing him to walk. Six says he’ll sue. Will the script and contract issues be resolved in time to get the erstwhile Dr. Heiter on set for the shoot, commencing later this year? WILL THE PEOPLE OF EARTH GET THE HUMAN CENTIPEDE THREEQUEL THEY WANT DESERVE DREAD?? On closer examination, Laser’s statement explaining why he parted ways with Six actually seems fairly reasonable. That said, what does it mean that Laser claims to be a method actor? *Shudder* Read Laser’s statement , via Best Movies Ever Screen Read: “It’s very simple: I loved the story when it was told, got the contract and the promise to have the script in 4 to 6 weeks. When it arrived – half a year later and only after the official announcement – I didn’t like the realization at all, couldn’t identify with the character the way it was written and developed immediately and enthusiastically in a day and night marathon a version full of concrete and practical suggestions which would enable me to play the lead full throttle – same procedure as with Dr. Heiter – but this time it also would have had some unavoidable effects to the dramatic structure. That was too much for Tom and since he couldn’t live with my suggestions and I as a method actor couldn’t identify with his version, I told him that I couldn’t see any other way than that he would have to ‘change horses.’ That’s it.” Of course, there is the pesky business of legal contracts to contend with. And since Six’s vision involves both Dr. Heiter and Human Centipede 2 ‘s Martin, I can’t imagine Six will let Laser walk without a lot of trouble. This ought to make for a harmonious set. Six Tweeted the following earlier today: @tom_six Tom Six An actor who demands his own script changes which I as the THC creator didnt like. It was his way or the highway after he signed a contract! Mar 29 via web Favorite Retweet Reply Of course, it’s entirely possible, given the self-reflexive nature of The Human Centipede 2 (in which Six and HC1 star Ashlynn Yennie play themselves as the focus of an obsessed Human Centipede fan) that this is all part of some weird meta-narrative in which Six plays himself sparring with his star in real life to frame whatever shenanigans go down in The Human Centipede 3 . Method acting and Hollywood industry inside talk would fit into the U.S.-centric theme, I suppose. What do you think, Movieliners: Publicity stunt or legit creative difference? ‘Titanic’ Looks ‘Spectacular’ In 3-D, James Cameron Says

Film’s 3-D conversion ‘takes it to a whole different level,’ director tells MTV News at U.K. premiere of re-release. By Kevin P. Sullivan, with reporting by Vicky Nwosu-Hope James Cameron and his wife at the “Titanic 3D” premiere Photo: Getty Images Nearly 15 years after “Titanic” became the biggest movie ever to grace the silver screen, director James Cameron has expanded his blockbuster into the third dimension. On April 4, “Titanic” sets sail in 3-D after a painstaking conversion that Cameron believes enhances the picture’s overall effect. MTV News spoke with the director in London, on the red carpet for the U.K. premiere of the re-release, which hits theaters days before the 100th anniversary of the ship’s sinking. “It’s really a dream come true to get this film back into cinema because it just has a whole different effect on people when they take three hours out of their life to just sit and have the unbroken experience and let the story take them along,” Cameron said. “It can be quite a profoundly emotional experience, and you’re not going to get that watching it on video. The 3-D just enhances the whole thing. It takes it to a whole different level. ” Cameron decided to begin the process in 2005, while he was prepping his next ambitious project, “Avatar.” “I was pretty convinced at that time that 3-D was really going to transform the cinema experience. I wanted cinema owners, the exhibitors, to embrace the conversion to digital projection, so that there’d be a place to show 3-D movies,” Cameron said. “I was thinking of ‘Avatar,’ but I was also saying, ‘Look, we can do films like “Titanic.” We can take “Jaws,” “Star Wars,” whatever your favorite movies are, we can convert them to 3-D and give them a whole new life.’ So we started doing test to see what a conversion of ‘Titanic’ would look like. We did a minute and a half of it, and it looked spectacular. ” The 3-D re-release offered Cameron the opportunity to reflect on what made “Titanic” a worldwide sensation. Cameron said he feels that it didn’t have everything to do with the movie’s young star Leonardo DiCaprio . “Women could relate to it, not just because of the Leo-mania thing, but because a lot of young women struggle with the sense of identity in societal expectation. The character of Rose was really written very much about those ideas,” Cameron said. “I think it was a simplification after the fact that [DiCaprio] is why women were so attracted to the movie.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Titanic.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Michael Bay To ‘Ninja Turtles’ Fans: We Won’t Let You Down!

‘Everything that is near and dear to fans will still be there,’ director Jonathan Liebesman tells MTV News after producer catches flak for reboot. By Kara Warner Michael Bay Photo: Dr. Billy Ingram/WireImage Who could have predicted that a Michael Bay-produced re-imagining of “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” would cause such a stir? While fans were largely onboard for a reboot, the tide turned when Bay recently announced that he would give our half-shell heroes an alien origin story. Fan reaction to the news has been negative, to say the least. So much so that Bay has already twice taken to his Shoot for the Edit message board to tell fans that the reboot will not disappoint. On Tuesday (March 27), Bay hit the boards again, promising that the new movie will include “everything you remember” from the original; he also explained why the film’s name is “Ninja Turtles,” not “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.” “Paramount marketing changed the name. They made the title simple,” he wrote. “The characters you all remember are exactly the same, and yes they still act like teenagers,” he added. “Everything you remember, why you liked the characters, is in the movie. This script is being developed by two very smart writers, with one of the original creators of Ninja Turtles. They care VERY MUCH about making this film for the fans. Everyone on this team cares about the fans. Just give them a chance. Jonathan [Liebesman], the director, is a major fan of the whole franchise. HE’S NOT GOING TO LET YOU DOWN.” Speaking of Liebesman, MTV News caught up with the director as he promoted his latest, “Wrath of the Titans,” and he seemed to share Bay’s sentiment, saying the new version will preserve “the essence” of the original. “What’s important to me are the characters that Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird created, the essence is preserved, and we’re true to that,” Liebesman said. “And everything that is near and dear to fans will still be there, every new thing we think of is tied into the mythology. We’re not going to betray anything that has been there before — I’m a fan myself.” “Ninja Turtles” is due in theaters Christmas 2013.
