#BlackAIDSDay: How You Can Live With HIV With No Shame

Source: Aryah Lester / Aryah Lester This post originally appeared on  A Girl Like Me , a blog for women and girls on  The Well Project , and is part of collaboration with HelloBeautiful for National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day . “I still have a dream,” said Martin Luther King, “it is deeply rooted in the American Dream.” Earlier in history, Henry David Thoreau was quoted as saying: “Go confidently in the direction of your dreams.  Live the life you’ve imagined!” Dreams that are tied to a confident, better you, tied to career goals and an impact in society, are of the few remnants of our innocent and wondrous childhood fantasies. However, in reality, many of us see career goals bringing personal happiness as fictional as wishing on stars. Discrimination, HIV stigma and social statuses seem to plant us in mud, with a generous percentage of people just achieving enough to manage the next breath. There are times that hope shines through the dense polluted clouds of realism, and we find ourselves thinking that by chance a rare opportunity is afforded to our lives.  An unforeseen position, promotion or opportunity teases us with the goals of fantasy coming into the waking light and telling our stories in all facets of public health. If only for a moment, the thought of living our ‘lottery of life’ enters the mind and holds root within the desert of desperation. The dream continues to be just that: an occurrence within our minds that never quite translates into our reality. Hope can be manufactured into dreams coming true, outside the realm of “princesses castles’ and ‘heroes destined to change the world.” My own foray into the world of HIV advocacy and activism for an underserved and vulnerable population has so far seen many of my dreams come true, while at the same time having no visibly viable resources to speak of to many in my community. I now find myself to be the Deputy Executive Director of the Transgender Strategy Center , devoted to the needs of my community, in an area where, historically, there has never existed anything like what we created. It had only previously existed in my dreams. Here are the main ten steps that could assist you with achieving the same for yourself. Simplify your life. Don’t hesitate for opportunities within your ability. Join HIV committees/boards. Volunteer. Network socially. Network online. Network. Make relationships with organizations with a similar mission. Form a coalition. Find volunteers/pro-bono contractors. Search for sponsors to conferences and trainings. Realize realistic time factors. Whatever you do, just don’t give up. The Well Project is a non-profit organization whose mission is to change the course of the   HIV /AIDS pandemic through a unique and comprehensive focus on women and girls. Visit their website,  www.thewellproject.org , to access fact sheets (English and Spanish),   blogs , and advocacy tools, and to join a global community of women living with   HIV . #Free21Savage: 21 Savage Inhumanely Locked In ICE Cell 23 Hours Per Day, Please Sign Petition For His Release

Source: Prince Williams / Getty Sign The Petition To Help Free 21 Savage From ICE Custody 21 Savage has become a victim of this anti-immigrant political climate helmed by the Trump administration. If you listened to the #SOTU address last night then you know that the idea of 21 being deported from America would make these Republican a$$holes smile like the Grinch stealing Christmas. Despite the shameless people on Twitter who think this is hilarious, there are people who are treating this situation with the seriousness it deserves. The folks at Since The 80s, Black Lives Matter, Color of Change, BAJI (Black Alliance For Just Immigration), Define American, UndocuBlack Network have launched a petition directed at ICE Field Office Director, Sean Gallagher for the immediate release of the Atlanta father, son, friend and superstar. They are asking for 300,000 signatures and they are sitting on 221,776 at the time of this writing. We ask, beg, and implore each and every one of you to sign this petition and do all you can to make your voice heard on behalf of Shéyaa Bin Abraham-Joseph. 21’s manager Meezy recently tweeted that he spoke to Savage on the phone and was told that the rapper is being locked down for 23 and 1, which means only ONE hour outside of his cell per day. They are clearly trying to break him, but we’re not going to let that happen. Go to OrganizeFor to sign the petition. Dead the corny “jokes” and do something good with your life.

Issa Good Kid: All The Times 21 Savage Made Us Love Him

See the rest here:

Source: Prince Williams / Getty It’s been a pretty tough and confusing weekend for 21 Savage and anyone that’s a fan of his music. Over the weekend, the rapper was taken into custody for possible removal from the U.S. TMZ reported, “21 Savage was picked up by ICE early Sunday morning. He apparently entered the U.S. legally in 2005 but his visa expired and he reportedly is here illegally. He reportedly is being held for removal proceedings … this for being in the country illegally and for being a felon. He was convicted of drug charges in 2014.” Lots of folks have pointed out that the timing of 21’s arrest is an eyebrow raiser. Not only that, but isn’t ICE’s job capture immigrants who are involved in illegal activity? We all know that Savage, whose r eal name is Shayaa Bin Abraham-Joseph , has a past — but he’s pretty much been on a strait and narrow for several years and doing so much for the African-American community. There’s so much more to the young star than tattoos, guns and an expired visa. Hit the flip for all the times 21 Savage made us love him.

Saving Our Daughters on FOX STAR SET Black History Month

Source: Curtis B / Radio One (Friday, January 25th) The girls of the Ron Clark Academy (RCA) had an exciting, eye opening experience as they toured the set of the Fox television HIT show STAR, co-created by Lee Daniels. The 5th-7th graders that participated in the special field trip are part of the “Saving Our Daughter’s Cinderella” program, co-founded by actress and singer, Keke Palmer, who is also a guest star on STAR. Going on its second year of the STAR and Saving Our Daughters special set visits; this field trip was coordinated and hosted by Assistant to James E. Williams of Star Season 3, Taylor Williams. In addition to setting up a tour of the stages and sets, Q&A with some of the crew enlightened the girls of the team effort involved in the development of the show. Tasha Smith (Actress, Director) Mack Price (Production Assistant), Rachel Guilfoyle (Costumes Coordinator), Carrie Clever (Seamstress), Natalie Rhooms (Set Director), Zoey Wang (Art Coordinator )and Aamina Gant (Music Coordinator) spoke to and visited with the RCA Cinderellas about what it is like to work on a television series, their professions and the life choices they made that led them to STAR. Source: Curtis B / Radio One Source: Curtis B / Radio One “FOX Television & the STAR team’s openness to provide these opportunities are priceless. It’s takes a village to bring awareness of the possible careers in the arts and to encourage young girls to push through their challenges and pursue their dreams. Thank you again for sharing your gifts with us.” – Saving Our Daughters’ Co-Founder, Debbie Benjamin The girls had the pleasure of meeting everyone from wardrobe, production design, photography and set decoration. They were blessed and encouraged after talking in depth with Tasha Smith. To hear Tasha’s personal testimony of overcoming bullying, childhood adversities and drug abuse in her family; to evolve into an assertive, successful actress, director and producer left a lasting impression on the students. Watching the anticipation build as the girls were about to witness an actual rehearsal scene in the recording studio, their faces beamed with amazement, as actresses/singers Jude Demorest (Star) and Ryan Destiny (Alexandria) came out to encourage the girls, take photos and give hugs to each girl. Source: Curtis B / Radio One Source: Curtis B / Radio One Source: Curtis B / Radio One Source: Curtis B / Radio One What some of the RCA Cinderellas had to say on their STAR Visit; Ryann Gholston, 8th “My visit to the set of STAR was very informational. I am so grateful for the experience! When we arrived, we were given a tour of the set where we met a few workers who all had completely different but exciting jobs. These jobs included costume design, production assistant, and set design. It was really cool for me to see how much preparation goes behind filming just one scene. We even met Jude Demorest and Ryan Destiny, two of the stars of the show. We also met the director, the one and only Ms. Tasha Smith! I really appreciate how the Saving Our Cinderellas program continues to reach out to girls like me to expose us to new things we don’t get to do or see every day!” Sanaa Dais, 6th “It was an honor to have been chosen to view the set of Star. The experience was awesome and the I will never forget that memory. I met some terrific and talented individuals. How many people can say they’ve met Tasha Smith? Meeting the cast was great. Thank you for an awesome experience.” Joy Udoh, 6th “My Savings Our Cinderella’s experience has been nothing short of amazing. I loved getting to see the tv set and seeing what goes on behind the scenes. Being a young girl, it’s truly inspiring to watch other women take the lead in fields that you didn’t even know existed. I am extremely grateful for the opportunity and I absolutely loved it.” Haley Crawley, 7th “I was invited to the set of STAR and had the opportunity of meeting Jude (Star), Ryan (Alexandra), Taylor, and Mac. I loved the whole thing. I got to learn about the set. I learned about the roles of an assistant director, a production assistant, and a set designer. We also learned what happened in the design and art studio. My favorite part was the fashion designers. I love fashion. Thank you for the amazing experience.” Zoey Little, 6th “I really enjoyed being on the set of Star. I know a lot of people do not get the experience that I got to have, let alone meet two of the main characters, Star and Alexandra. My favorite part overall was going to the costume department where I got to ask questions about how many costumes one character has and about the budget. I really enjoyed this experience as it changed my outlook on how much work goes on behind the scenes in the filming industry.”

Celebrity Big Brother Recap: Here’s What Really Happened to Anthony Scaramucci

When the Celebrity Big Brother live feeds opened on Tuesday night, many eagle-eyed viewers noticed a glaring omission to the cast: Anthony Scaramucci. The man who lasted ten or eleven days inside the White House had seemingly left the Big Brother house in just six days.  While he resurfaced at an event in Switzerland, Friday’s episode of the CBS juggernaut was all about filling in the blanks.  It turns out, Anthony was always supposed to stay in the house for a handful of days. He appeared via video message in a President Trump-like set-up and revealed the new to his houseguests.  “I’m actually not a Big Brother houseguest, but I am part of a Big Brother twist” the former White House Director of Communications revealed at the top of the hour. “Just like I left my mark in Washington, I’m going to leave my mark on the Big Brother game. First off: From this moment on, I’m out of the house.” “That means you’re all one step closer to the quarter-million dollar prize. The Big Brother house is just like my experience in Washington; you get judged quickly before people know who you really are — and you don’t get a second chance.” “So I’m giving the current nominees a second chance at safety.” With that, we learned that there was one more veto competition for the week, giving Jonathan and Tom a second chance to get off the block.  Before that, Ryan had to nominate another houseguest to take the Mooch’s place on the block.  He chose Kandi Burruss, citing the fact that their personalities “don’t really mesh.” Yes, really, and Kandi was pissed.  Ryan immediately followed up her nomination by trying to hug her, but she was not about all the fakery, so she told the Olympian to keep his distance from her.  Kato won the special POV, meaning the nominations would remain the same, or they could be changed in some way.  Kato went with saving his ally, Tom, and Ryan was forced to nominate another houseguest. He went with Joey Lawrence this time.  Dina votes to evict: Kandi  Kato votes to evict: Jonathan Tamar votes to evict: Jonathan Ricky votes to evict: Jonathan Tom votes to evict: Jonathan  Lolo votes to evict: Jonathan Natalie votes to evict: Jonathan Jonathan was the first houseguest evicted.  “It went really well, Julie,” Jonathan complained, adding: “Don’t team up with a gold medalist as soon as you enter the house. It’ll put a target on your back.” As for Julie, well she dragged Jonathan for trying to save Dina and not telling his allies.  What are your thoughts on the first eviction? Hit the comments below.  Big Brother continues Sunday at 8/7c on CBS.  View Slideshow: Big Brother: Meet the Most Controversial Houseguests
