True Grit: A Revenge Movie for the Whole Family?

Sure, the trailers portray the Coen Brothers’ True Grit as a foreboding revenge piece “from the directors of No Country for Old Men ,” but the duo says that the PG-13 movie is actually modeled after Treasure Island and other adventure films they saw as kids. They also claim the film is tonally different than anything they’ve done before, and fits perfectly with a holiday release date. So perhaps a Western-revenge tale you can take your daughter to has finally arrived. Review embargo breaks today, so stay tuned…[ USA Today ]

Dancing with the Stars Elimination: Bomb Drop!

Dancing with the Stars ‘s first elimination is always such a divine embarrassment. What compares to the moment when an oiled-up pseudo-celeb stands under a spotlight, congratulates himself on his “spirited” cha-cha-cha, and listens just long enough to hear Tom Bergeron fire his ass? Well, I enjoyed it. Now that the first loser has been declared, let’s re-watch his/her routine once more and figure out where it went wrong.

REVIEW: Howl Gives Allen Ginsberg’s Funky Genius the Collage Treatment

Filmmakers feel an understandable urge to rise to the occasion when committing the lives of ’60s saints and mold-busting mavericks like Bob Dylan and Allen Ginsberg to the screen. Dylan got Todd Haynes’s 2007 deconstruction of the biopic, I’m Not There (in which David Cross appears as Ginsburg in an indelible cameo). And now Ginsberg is the subject of Howl , a collagist treatment of his creation myth. Directors Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman began their account of the conception of Ginsburg’s titular declamatory opus and the 1957 obscenity trial that followed its publication as a straight documentary. After roughing out the usual talking heads and archival footage, it became clear to the directors of The Times of Harvey Milk (Epstein only) and The Celluloid Closet that the best way to honor their subject was to get a little funky.

Aaron Johnson Enters X-Men, Fatherhood

Sure, Aaron Johnson didn’t get that Spider-Man role. He didn’t want it anyway! At least the 20-year-old actor has two nifty consolation prizes: a rumored role as Cyclops in X-Men: First Class (where he’d reunite with his Kick-Ass director Matthew Vaughn), and a new baby daughter, Wylda Rose , birthed by his 43-year-old Nowhere Boy director Sam Taylor-Wood. It is safe to say that no one loves his directors more than Aaron Johnson. [ AICN , Daily Mail ]

A Star is Born on the Croisette — and He’s 101 Years Old

Enough with the desperate starlets trying to make a name for themselves on the Croisette in skimpy bathing suits — chickens, really. The sexiest breakout star on the Riviera this year is a 101-year-old Portuguese man. Film-snob circles have deified Manoel de Oliveira for years, since he was an nonagenarian at least. For all you Hollywood power types looking to sign the next big thing, here’s your cheat sheet on who is arguably the biggest story of Cannes thus far.

Do You Recognize Any of the Names in the Directors’ Fortnight Sidebar at Cannes?

Last year at Cannes, the Directors’ Fortnight sidebar opened with a film by a director you may have heard of…some up-and-comer named Francis Ford Coppola? This year is a little different; the lineup was announced today , and it’s teeming with new faces. (Among those missing: Vincent Gallo, who we’ve heard is still seeking money to complete Promises Written in Water .) Still, you may recognize a few.

Lindsay Lohan Playing Linda Lovelace?

Lindsay Lohan is reportedly bragging that she will play notorious porn star Linda Lovelace in a major movie – but the directors insist she has nothing to do with it. Lohan has allegedly been telling pals that she has landed the role as the tragic porn icon who later became a feminist and anti-porn activist, according to Page Six . But the team behind the long-awaited movie Lovelace insist Lindsay has no connection to their film. “Definitely not true for our project, which is ‘Lovelace’,” said Rob Epstein, directing the movie alongside Jeffrey Friedman. “We can’t speak for any other project out there unrelated to our team,” he added, accepting the unlikely possibility Lindsay could be talking about playing the porn star in a totally different film. Lovelace will chronicle Linda Boreman’s rise to fame in the infamous 1972 porn film Deep Throat, to her sudden turn as a feminist and anti-porn activist. The story is told from the point of view of three interviewers at various stages of her life.
