Weekday Vegetarian: Pinto Bean Mole Chili

Photo: Kelly Rossiter I’ve tried lots of vegetarian chilies over the years, but I seldom find them really satisfying. My book club was having a chocolate themed dinner and I found this recipe for Pinto Bean Mole Chili and decided to try it. Everybody loved it, and they ate the entire pot, along with all the other main course offerings that people brought…. Read the full story on TreeHugger

Designer G-Wiz EV Celebrates Its Love Affair with London

Image credit: GoinGreen There was a time when the virus-like spread of the G-Wiz electric vehicle in London (known as the REVA elsewhere) was big news on TreeHugger. And while certain opinionated motoring journalists may have been less than complimentary about the G Wiz , there is no doubt that as an early pioneer of electrified transportation it has filled a niche market for urban emission-free private vehicles. But wit… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Graphene Supercapacitor Breakthrough Offers Energy Density Comparable to NiMH Battery!

Photo: Wikipedia , CC But With all the Advantages of Supercapacitors As you can see above, graphene is a one-atom thick sheet of carbon atoms, very similar to carbon nanotubes , except for the “tube” part. This wonder-material has very interesting electrical properties that have allowed researchers to create a graphene-based supercapacitor that exhibits a “specific energy density of 85.6 Wh/kg at room temperature and 136 Wh/kg at 80 … Read the full story on TreeHugger

Budget Cuts Threaten Healthier School Lunches in the Nation’s Capital

Photo credit: avilasal / Creative Commons When Washington, DC, passed the “Healthy Schools” initiative earlier this year, it took a leap ahead of the rest of the country in terms of serving quality, healthy, food in it’s school districts. With three in four students at risk of hunger and one in three overweight or obese, there is perhaps no place that needed such a program more. But now, due to a $188 million gap in the city’s budget, this program has been stripped of its funding…. Read the full story on TreeHugger

Sweatshop-Free? New Report Grades Levi’s, Gap, and Wal-Mart’s Supply Chain

Photo: As You Sow When it comes to sweatshop-free supply chains, does your favorite fashion brand make the grade? More than a decade ago, in response to controversy sparked by sweatshop conditions in the U.S. companies’ global supply chains, apparel brands adopted vendor codes of conduct to avoid risks. To date, it’s been unclear which brands have actually adopted effective policies and programs to address the issue. A new report, released by corporate responsibility group As You Sow re… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Three Green Building Lawyer Bloggers Predict The Next Big Thing

Stephen Del Percio, Lloyd Alter, Shari Shapiro, Chris Cheatham I follow the three leading bloggers on green building law closely; they make complicated and important issues affecting green building comprehensible. When I saw that they were all on a panel together at Greenbuild, I had to attend and meet them in person, and hear their responses to the question “What’s the Next Big Challenge in Green Building Law?” Although all three are great at making complex issues understandable to non-legal types, I still could not understand my notes well enough to do a post, so I asked them all to look into their crystal ball and send me their… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Are the Galapagos Islands Ready for More Tourism?

This Great Blue Heron, one of the first organisms to greet us upon arrival in the Galapagos, sure doesn’t seem to mind the tourists. All photos credit Collin Dunn. The Galapagos Islands are like no place on earth. The Galapagos Islands have too many tourists. The Galapagos Islands have some of the most interesting, unique plants, animals, landscape, and scenery in the world. The Galapagos Islands aren’t prepared to maintain the level of conservation necessary to preserve the natural wonder of this place in the face of increasing human impact. A case can be made for all of the above, and in some… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Secondhand Smoke Kills More Than 600,000 A Year

photo via Smoke Free Texas I sat outside a Starbucks in Houston, Texas the other day, trying to enjoy my soy latte but I was surrounded by smokers. I didn’t ask them to stop–it was a smoking-allowed area–but perhaps I should have anyway, and I could have told them about a new study, published yesterday in The Lancet, which finds that secondhand smoking kills more than 600,000 lives each year around the world…. 120 Million Acres of Alaska Coast Declared Critical Polar Bear Habitat

Photo: flickrfavorites , Flickr, CC In Alaska, over 187,000 square miles, or 120 million acres, have been designated ‘critical polar bear habitat’ under the Endangered Species Act. The designation resulted as part of a settlement in the ongoing lawsuit brought against the US Department of the Interior by some of the most powerful conservation groups in the country. The lawsuit aims to protect the polar bear by having it listed as ‘endangered’ as opposed to ‘threatened’. Here’s what the news means for polar bears:… Read the full story on TreeHugger
