Another Crack: Petermann Glacier, Giant Ice Island, Breaks Off Into The Sea

A NASA image shows the large chunk of ice breaking away from Greenland’s Petermann Glacier. Russia is of course baking in record heat and now the Petermann Glacier in northern Greenland has lost an iceberg of 87 square kilometers in size. For scale, the ice sheet is said to be 4 times the size of Manhattan. … Read the full story on TreeHugger

Tyson Foods May Have a Sustainability Report But It Doesn’t Mean Factory Farming is Ever Sustainable

I normally don’t take direct aim at other people’s reporting, but a recent post on Tyson Foods new sustainability report over at SmartPlanet made me wonder if I was living on that same planet as the author. What’s sure is we have differing definitions for ‘sustainable’ and the place of factory farming in the world…. Read the full story on TreeHugger

Changes in Ocean Oxygen Levels Means Coastal Creatures Can’t Fight Illness

Photo by nukeit1 In normal conditions, marine animals are well equipped to fight off infection from the plethora of bacteria and viruses lurking in the oceans. However, that means having a hearty immune system that can react quickly if they get hurt. Researcher are finding that areas with low oxygen, such as within and around dead zones, and high carbon dioxide can wreak havoc on coastal animals’ ability to ward off disease. They are finding that for animals living in polluted areas such as these, it takes only half as much bacteria to be lethal. … Read the full story on TreeHugger

Is ‘Conscious Capitalism’ an Oxymoron? (Video)

There’s no doubt that the last decade or so has seen the rise of what we might term ‘conscious capitalism’. Few would argue that this has been a positive development. But there’s at least one man who’s doing exactly that: the philosopher Slavoj Zizek. In this animated feature, he argues that ‘conscious capitalism’ is really just making us feel better about maintaining what is at its core an u… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Biologist Creates Noah’s Ark-Style Preserve for Animals Threatened by Gulf Oil Disaster

Photo via Sunphol Sorakul The Gulf oil disaster is having a massive impact on wildlife, with waves of animal deaths continuing into the foreseeable future thanks to both the oil and toxic clean-up methods. The disaster is so great that the extinction of some species is not an outlandish possibility, so it seems like a good idea to create a sanctuary elsewhere for the species who call the gulf home until the oil can be cleaned up. Naturalist Jack Rudloe has started just such a haven at his home in Tallahassee, building a Noah’s Ark-style preserve… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Credit: Minneapolis Public Library The message on posters from World Wars I and II are often similar to the messages we try to send at TreeHugger, such as growing your own food, walking instead of driving, reducing waste and conserving.
