Architect Builds House Using 4.5 Million Boeing 747 Parts

Architect David Hertz is building Francie Rehwald the home of her dreams: an eco-friendly house on 55 acres in the remote hills of Malibu, California. Called the Wing House, the structure is being built using a commercial Boeing 747-200. We first reported the plans for the house back in 2005. But the structure requires FAA approval as to not be mistaken for a crash site. digg_url = ‘http://www.treehugger.com/files/2010/06/architect_builds_house_using_45_million… Read the full story on TreeHugger

BP Buys 32 Oil Cleanup Machines from Kevin Costner (Video)

Photos: screen grabs, ABC One More Tool to Combat this Interminable Oil Spill A month ago I wrote something about Kevin Costner’s machine that can separate oil and water . Back then, most of us thought that the oil leaks in the Gulf of Mexico would soon be plugged and that this disaster would at least stop getting worse. Well, we know how that turned out… This catastrophe has been going on for so long that BP has had time to test one of … Read the full story on TreeHugger

Weekday Vegetarian: Use Up Your Less Than Perfect Strawberries with this Strawberry Bread

Photo: Kelly Rossiter I had a big dinner party last week and I served fresh strawberries in chocolate cups for dessert. As usual, I bought too many strawberries, and we had lots left over. They were quite ripe, so eating them before they went bad was proving to be a bit of a challenge. I can’t stand food waste, especially when it is something as delectible as fresh strawberries, so I had to figure out a way to use them up before I had to throw them away. … Read the full story on TreeHugger

1.1 Million Gallons of Toxic Chemical Dispersants Now in the Gulf

Photo via OSTC With the gruesome pictures of oil-covered birds and soiled shorelines now rolling in, and the narrative of the spill split between BP’s continued inability to get a handle on the flow from the source and the federal government’s inability to get a handle on BP, an important element of this debacle has slid under the radar: BP has continued to deploy hundreds of thousands of toxic chemical dispersants into the Gulf — despite repeated directives from the EPA demanding th… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Dispatch from the Gulf Oil Spill: Why We Are All Responsible for the Cleanup

Photo courtesy of Philippe Cousteau We made it into Tampa late last night and took the one hour drive to the beach near St. Petersburg. It was going to be another long day and we were prepared to get up early and get to the beach for the cleanup. I had come here in partnership with the Ocean Conservancy, one of the leading ocean conservation organizations in the country. The whole idea was to organize a beach cleanup as a way to channel the collective sense of frustration and demonstrate that people can take action to help the oceans…with or without oil. … Read the full story on TreeHugger

Most Major Oil Co’s Have Same Fabricated Spill "Response Plan" as BP

Image via Ocean World Earlier today, executives from other major oil companies engaged in offshore drilling testified before Washington. They attempted to convince the legislators that their drilling procedures and containment plans were much safer than BP’s, and that they can be trusted to continue drilling safely in deep waters. But some disturbing details surfaced at the hearing: Especially that many of the major oil companies’ response plans in the event of a major spill were ac… Read the full story on TreeHugger
