Image via TED A weekday vegetarian is someone who only eats meat on the weekends, drastically cutting their food carbon footprint without totally giving up BBQs and beef stews. We can curb climate change by as much as 70%, just by returning to a diet light on meat like we once enjoyed. In February, Graham presented his idea to the audience at TED 2010 . Photo: Klearchos Kapoutsis on Flickr If the trace pharmaceuticals and the spectre of a near-indestructible gyre of swirling plastic the size of Texas weren’t enough to scare you off bottled water, then try this: Canadian researchers have discovered that some bottled brands contain more bacteria than water that comes out of the tap. … Read the full story on TreeHugger

President Bush Evidently Way Cooler, Greener When Not President

Photo via KHL If you met a guy who lived in house that has 25,000 gallons of rainwater storage , ran on geothermal power, and who made use of his high public profile to endorse wind power, you’d probably think he was pretty green. App Calculates Oil Spill Damage, Lets You Play "What If" Games

Image via NASA Goddard Photo and Video Yesterday I was perusing infographics on global oil spills over the years – a great way to feel disturbed and depressed in under an hour – and wondered how it is we even calculate the amount of oil lost in leaks. Turns out, the Oil Spill Training Company Limited has an app called The Slick Calculator And Reporter, which uses the Bonn Agreement Code — an internationally recognized system — to generate the calculations. By using the appearance of the overall … Read the full story on TreeHugger

That doesn’t mean it would be simple, but it’s a counter-arguments to those who think the grid can’t handle much intermittent sources, and the NREL is definitely a credible source…. US team creates first ’synthetic life’

US researchers have developed the first bacteria cell controlled by a synthetic genome, in a breakthrough which may pose philosophical and scientific questions about the bid to recreate life. “This is the first synthetic cell that's been made,” said lead researcher Craig Venter, as the discovery was unveiled. “We call it synthetic because the cell is totally derived from a synthetic chromosome, made with four bottles of chemicals on a chemical synthesizer, starting with information in a computer.” The team said it now hopes to use the method it has developed “to probe the basic machinery of life and to engineer bacteria specially designed to solve environmental or energy problems.” http://rawstory.com/rs/2010/0520/team-creates-synthetic-life/ added by: unimatrix0
