By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Josh Hutcherson Photo: MTV News Although there were a few skeptics out there who questioned the casting of Jennifer Lawrence in “The Hunger Games,” most of that chatter died down when Lionsgate started releasing photos and clips of the Oscar nominee in action as Katniss Everdeen. Now, as we inch closer and closer toward the release date of the highly anticipated film, Lawrence’s castmates have been saying how she embodies the spirit of the beloved and critically acclaimed protagonist created by author Suzanne Collins. Lawrence’s co-star and real-life friend Josh Hutcherson recently told MTV News that despite being a very different person from Katniss, the actress’ ability to quickly turn the character on and off was startling. “She is literally 180 degrees different from Katniss,” Hutcherson said. “It’s amazing, honestly, to watch her effortlessly flip back and forth, because she’s very fun, very hilarious, and to watch her on ‘Action!’ go boom, right into the character is kind of impressive, so much so that she’s talking and being Jennifer up until they’re rolling sound and when they say ‘Action!’ boom, [she goes] right into character.” Hutcherson said Lawrence’s abilities are so good they’re unsettling. “That’s what crazy people do. Crazy people change who they are as a person just like that, so she’s a crazy person,” he joked. Perry debuts the video for her hit on ‘MTV First: Katy Perry’ on Wednesday, March 21, at 7:23 p.m. ET on MTV. By John Mitchell Katy Perry in her “Part of Me” music video Photo: Capitol Much has been made about who the subject of Katy Perry ‘s latest hit, “Part of Me,” might be. Is it her ex-husband, Russell Brand, or, given that she wrote it a while back, her other famous ex, Gym Class Heroes frontman Travie McCoy? Does it even matter? The song is an emotional breakup anthem that just about anyone can relate to; set to a 130-beat-per-minute house beat, it’s sure to have club kids the world over dancing their faces off. With the military-themed video for “Part of Me” premiering as part of “MTV First: Katy Perry” on Wednesday (March 21) at 7:23 p.m. ET on MTV, we decided to take an in-depth look at the song to let you know what it’s all about. “Part of Me” was written two years ago during Perry’s sessions for Teenage Dream. Perry co-wrote the song with Bonnie McKee and the writing/production team behind Dream ‘s biggest hits, Dr. Luke and Max Martin (“Teenage Dream,” “Last Friday Night,” “The One That Got Away”). While she reportedly did rework the lyrics after a demo of the track leaked online, Perry told MTV News recently that the kiss-off track is not directly about her relationship with Brand. “Some people that I work with were like, ‘You should just say you wrote it a couple of weeks ago.’ I’m like, ‘I’m not a d—, I’m going to tell the truth,’ ” she said. “I wrote it two years ago when I was writing and recording Teenage Dream, [but] it didn’t feel right on the record. I’d have to take out one of my other songs that [made the album] a nice, complete package.” Katy Perry’s Wild Road to “Part of Me” On the track, Perry declares herself unbreakable after a breakup, singing, “Days like this I want to drive away/ Pack my bags and watch your shadow fade/ ‘Cause you chewed me up and spit me out/ Like I was poison in your mouth/ You took my light, you drained me down/ But that was then and this is now.” The plan, according to Perry, had always been to release the song as part of a deluxe edition of her record-breaking album. “I always planned to put it out in the spring of this year, to possibly perform it at a big thing,” Perry told MTV News. And that’s exactly what she’s done. The track is included on Teenage Dream: The Complete Confection, out March 26, and Perry debuted “Part of Me” in February during her performance at the 54th Grammy Awards. She segued from her spacey “E.T.” into the new dance-pop track while rocking the stage at Los Angeles’ Staples Center wearing a body-hugging silver and gold bodysuit. The performance was her first since announcing her divorce from Brand, and because the lyrics so directly deal with moving on after a failed relationship, speculation ran rampant that the song was her kiss-off to Brand . While that’s definitely not the case, Perry admits the parallel between the lyrical content and what is going on in her own life is “serendipitous.” “I sit down and I write all these songs at once, all these emotions and feelings and thoughts, and then, like, it just feels like sometimes I’m caught in this movie where my life is paralleling my music,” Perry told MTV News. “It seems very serendipitous, but for me, as un-fun as it sounds, I prepare everything. I’m overly prepared and kind of a control freak in the best of ways.” Still, all that planning has paid off in spades. “Part of Me” debuted at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in late February after selling a staggering 448,000 downloads in its debut frame, the most of any song since Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way” dropped almost exactly a year earlier. Vocal issues are to blame, but singer/songwriter still plans to release his Born and Raised album on May 22. Just weeks after revealing his dates for a spring tour , the singer announced Friday (March 9) that he’d no longer be able to hit the road due to a new spate of vocal problems. “During rehearsal on Tuesday, it came to mind that I should see my throat doctor because something didn’t feel/sound right. I went in for a visit on Wednesday and a scope of my vocal cords revealed that the granuloma has grown back where it had mostly healed. This is bad news,” he wrote on his Tumblr . “Because of this, I have no choice but to take an indefinite break from live performing. Though there will be a day when all of this will be behind me, it will sideline me for a longer period of time than I care to have you count down.” He then went on to describe what the condition is, writing, “A granuloma forms and continues to snowball because it’s in a spot where the vocal cords hit together and there’s no way to really give it a chance to heal without a good stretch of time and some pretty intensive treatment. In short, it’s one giant pain in the ass.” For now, he says his album, Born and Raised, is still slated to be released May 22. Earlier this month he released his first single, “Shadow Days.” “I’m pretty emotionally burnt out at the moment, but please know how hard I tried to resolve this and how disappointed I am that I can’t perform this record yet. I’m completely bummed, especially for all of you who started making plans to see a show. Nothing feels worse than having to break the stage down before the performance, and I mean nothing,” he wrote. “I love this band you were going to hear, I love the guys and girls I work with, and the only thing that stops me from devolving into a puddle of tears is knowing that it’s a long life, and the greatest gift in the world is being able to create music no matter what the circumstances. So these are the new circumstances, and I’ll find a way to make it mean something. That’s all you can ever do.” In the post, he also revealed that while Born and Raised has yet to drop, he feels inspired to start work on his next album — but only after he seeks treatment for his vocal condition. “I’m going to begin writing the next album very soon,” he wrote. “I feel really vibrant as a writer at the moment and there’s no reason not to begin the next album project in the time I would have been touring. MTV News takes a look at why Madge’s upcoming album is a drug worth taking. By Jocelyn Vena Madonna’s MDNA Photo: Interscope Madonna wants us to dance the heartbreak away on MDNA. The record, set to drop on March 26, has some of the finest musical moments we’ve heard from the pop legend in the last few years, recalling the finer songs and themes she explored on Ray of Light and Confessions on a Dance Floor. It’s clear that Madge had her heart broken, most likely by her former hubby and British auteur, Guy Ritchie. She explores the pain of life post-divorce on many of the songs on the album, and most of the time, it works perfectly. Madonna really understands heartbreak and she understands even better how it can empower someone to be a better person. While all the buzz seems to be about “I Don’t Give A” and the bit too on-the-nose confessions she makes about her divorce (where she even sings about falling off a horse), her anger is even darker on the William Orbit-produced “Gang Bang.” Sparse at times and always punctuated by a pulsing beat, it’s incredibly hard. It’s the type of record you’d expect to hear at some after-hours club that your really edgy friend knows about. It’s about falling completely in love and falling more deeply into hate when it’s over. Serving as a pop-song revenge fantasy, Madonna sings, “And I’m going straight to hell/ And I’ve got a lot of friends there/ And if I see that b—- in Hell/ I’m gonna shoot him in the head again/ Cause I wanna see him die/ Over and over and over.” On the disco-tinged “Love Spent,” Madge sings about feeling like nothing more than a bank to a former lover (she did have one very costly breakup from Ritchie), and on the remorseful, melodic “Best Friend,” she admits, “Your picture’s off the wall, but I’m still waiting for your call/ And every man that walks through the door/ Will be compared to you.” “Superstar” is light and airy, recalling some of the singer’s highlights from the ’80s. The mid-tempo’s production, which comes courtesy of Hardy “Indiigo” Muanza, certainly helps distract from some of the sillier lyrics that have Madonna comparing her boy toy to famed dudes like Al Capone and James Dean. If anyone was wondering why she called the album MDNA, all they need to do is look to “I’m Addicted,” the super club-thumping track full of bleeping noises, spare moments and then big chugging ones, which are filled out with loopy instances. It’s about letting go and loving someone completely: “Now that your name/ Pumps like blood in my veins/ Pulsing through my body, lighting my mind/ It’s like MDNA and that’s OK.” MDNA, of course, is also known as ecstasy, giving the track the perfect metaphor for love on the dance floor. While most of the album addresses the highs and lows of falling in love, “Some Girls” is all about Madonna proclaiming her awesomeness. Another Orbit jam, it’s a crunchy, robotic, thumping anthem that puts Madonna right in the center of female empowerment. “I’m not like the rest,” she proclaims, as if anyone would ever question that. “Some girls are second best.” On the chorus, she declares, “Some girls are not like me/ I’m everything you’ve ever dreamed of/ I got you begging please.” One of the highlights is “Turn Up the Radio,” which sounds like it was born to be this summer’s feel-good anthem. It’s bright, happy and fun, all about letting go of the past. Over Martin Solveig’s sunny production, Madge sings, “It was time I opened my eyes/ I’m leaving the past behind/ Nothing’s ever what it seems/ Including this time and this crazy dream.” She’s not wrong to be that confident on this album. She’s certainly in the groove. And the album is full of strength, but it’s also her vulnerability that rounds it out. First, the sexiness: Asked about her divorce from Saturday Night Live player Fred Armisten, meanwhile, Moss at first told the publication “it’s so hard to talk about,” but then added: “One of the greatest things I heard someone say about [Fred] is, ‘He’s so great at doing impersonations. IV His Son asks the listener if they are supposed to follow Long and Dollar in lieu of all the controversy surrounding their “prosperity gospel,” as well as the sexual accusations that Long settled out of court despite vowing to fight them.
