‘Prometheus’ FX Supervisor Gives Inside Look At First Scene

Martin Hill tells the Daily how he set the stage with the visually arresting opening scene. By Kevin P. Sullivan An Engineer in “Prometheus” Photo: This article contains “Prometheus” spoilers. Ridley Scott’s ” Prometheus ” begins with some of the film’s most arresting images. A hairless, pale-skinned Engineer stands atop a waterfall. He drinks a liquid that we may never learn more about, disintegrates and, in turn, creates all of life on Earth. The visuals set the stage for the rest of the film and show Scott’s use of 3-D simultaneously, and now, new videos from the Daily explore the effects work that went into making that shot and the Prometheus’ crash with the Engineer ship. Visual effects supervisor Martin Hill from WETA Digital goes into great detail during his interview about the opening sequence, the creation of life. Not only was the team challenged with creating an impressive visual, but one that succinctly told a complex story. “Because we had such a short amount of time to tell the story of the DNA getting infected, breaking apart, and then re-forming and recombining to show Earth DNA, we had to make the designs of the different DNA quite graphical, quite illustrative of what they were,” Hill said. After some time, the sequence shifts to the microscopic level, traveling inside the veins of the Engineer. For those sequences, Scott instructed the visual effects team to emphasize the destruction being done. “The Engineer’s DNA, we thought, ‘This needs to be quite sinister, but we know it’s going to get infected, and the infection has to look more messed up than the Engineer’s DNA,’ ” Hill said. “We used quite a light color palette for Engineer’s DNA, and then the infection comes on and it’s very melted looking. Ridley actually said to us, ‘It has to feel like war in there. The DNA is just being torn apart.’ ” The actual scene of genetic destruction came together from computer-generated elements, but the inspiration for the look came from a very real-life source of inspiration. “We try to use as much reality as possible, so we were looking at all different kinds of reference, so eventually we settled on fish bones, actual decayed fish spines, to represent the structure of the DNA,” Hill said. “For the infection that rolls across the infected DNA, what we did was carve actual blocks of silicone with the vein structures in there and pumped black ink and oils and all kinds of different materials through those, filmed them, and used the motion of those as the basis for all of our effects for the veins and the effect coursing through his body.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Prometheus.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

WATCH: Moonrise Kingdom Animated Short Brings Suzy’s Children’s Books to Life

Wes Anderson ‘s nostalgic kid romance Moonrise Kingdom is on its way to wide release later this month (June 29), when even more folks will have the chance to fall in love with the tale of New England youngsters Sam (Jared Gilman) and Suzy (Kara Hayward). As a special treat, Focus Features has released an utterly charming supplemental short — introduced by Bob Balaban as the island of New Penzance’s narrator/cartographer and, as it turns out, local librarian — in which the six young adult fantasy books glimpsed in the film come to life via Hayward’s narration and some magical animation. In Moonrise , star-crossed tween lovers Sam and Suzy pact to run away together, sending the entire island into a tizzy. The soulmates’ plan for escape is as practical as it is impractical; they’ve packed camping gear and kitten food, but Suzy’s suitcase is filled with library books. And what books! Shelly and the Secret Universe , The Francine Odysseys , The Girl from Jupiter , Disappearance of the 6th Grade , The Light of Seven Matchsticks , The Return of Auntie Lorraine … Anderson commissioned different artists to design each novel, a small but potent detail that goes a long way in capturing that elusive sense of childhood wonderment, at least for this childhood sci-fi/fantasy book nerd.

Damon Lindelof on Prometheus’s Ending and a Handy, Spoilery Alien Infographic

The Prometheus post-mortem continues (really, the fact that it’s still provoking discourse says something… right?) with screenwriter Damon Lindelof talking end-of-movie spoilers with TIME Magazine. Namely, what does it mean that you-know-who does you-know-what with the whatsit at the end? Kidding! Dive in to hear the LOST veteran address the certain future of our heroes, plus: An infographic that breaks down Prometheus ‘s DNA in one handy chart. Spoilers throughout! First up, TIME talks with Lindelof about the smoke monster. I mean the android, David (Michael Fassbender), who pulls some seriously heinous moves in Prometheus at the behest of one master, only to seemingly switch allegiances at the end. Can Shaw (Noomi Rapace) trust David’s head to direct her where she wants to go, i.e. the space beyond space, from whence the Engineers of doom hail? Lindelof says yes, because David has a robot crush on her . I think they’re going where she wants to go. His fundamental programming has been scrapped. Weyland [the man who built and programmed him] is dead and so now his programming is coming from God knows where. Is he being programmed by Elizabeth, or is it his own internal curiosity now that Weyland isn’t telling him what to do any more? He’s always been interested in Elizabeth, remember that: He’s watching her dreams when she’s sleeping in much the same way that he watches Lawrence of Arabia . He’s a strange robot that has a curious crush on a human being , and when Weyland is eliminated, I think he is genuinely interested in what she’s interested in. He reaches out partly for survival, but partly out of curiosity, and I think he’s sincere that he’ll take her wherever she wants to go. Right. Well, interspecies relations have taken stranger routes in the Alien universe. Speaking of which, artist Carlos Poon whipped up a handy infographic (via the folks at Dangerous Minds ) to help your brain keep track of the origins of species in Prometheus . Alright gang, mysteries solved! Right? RIIIIGHT?? [ TIME , Dangerous Minds ]

Race Matters: Michelle Rodriguez Recently Discovered Her Father’s Ancestors Practiced Inbreeding To Keep The Fam “Light And Bright”

SMH… Some Latino folk have serious “complexion” issues — and have gone to extremes to keep the kids lightskinned! Just ask Michelle Rodriguez , who recently learned that many of her ancestors wed their first cousins. Michelle Rodriguez Learned Her Ancestors Practiced Incest To Keep The Bloodline Lightskinned “Lost” hottie MICHELLE RODRIGUEZ is the product of kissing cousins! The 33-year-old actress recently learned that her great-great grandparents on her father’s side were first cousins — and that several more of her dad’s relatives practiced inbreeding! “I guess my father’s side loved to do it in the family,” quipped Michelle, who soared to stardom in the 2000 indie hit “Girlfight.” Researchers discovered her family’s incestuous link when Michelle’s genealogical background was explored on the PBS show “Finding Your Roots with Henry Louis Gates, Jr.” she also Learned that three of her great-grandfathers were brothers, and that her father’s Puerto Rican ancestors deliberately married family members in a practice known as endogamy. They inbred in a bid to maintain the family’s lighter skin color because they believed lighter-skinned people were more high class than dark-skinned folks. The “Avatar” actress, who was born in San Antonio, Texas, said that she witnessed the effects of endogamy first-hand as a child when her father’s light-skinned Puerto Rican family looked down on her mother’s darker relatives from the Dominican Republic. Her parents divorced when she was 8, and Michelle — who has several DUI busts under her belt — credits her difficult childhood for her tough-girl image both on and off the screen. “My dad was so clouded and miserable part of the time, so he just hit the bottle hard,” she said. “My mom wasn’t about that stuff.” On the PBS show, the “Machete” star was also stunned to learn that her DNA lineage was 72 percent European, 21 percent black and 6 percent Native American. “I’m appalled,” said Michelle. “I’m European? Ewww! I wanted to be Native American!” As for the news that she’s got a lot of African- American blood, Michelle said: “I need to shoot over there (Africa) and get in touch with my roots.” And commenting on her ancestors’ marital history, the still-single beauty told a pal: “Even though my great-grandparents were first cousins, I don’t think I’ll ever go down that path if I ever get married.” So does this mean Michelle will settle down with a nice brownskinned lady partner when she’s ready? Movie Nudity Report: Piranha 3DD

Piranha 3DD hits theaters and VOD today, and there’s just one question on Skin Central (and undoubtedly everyone else’s) mind: Does it deliver? “We wanted to double everything ,” screenwriter Marcus Dunstan told Yahoo! news earlier this week. “If the first one had laughs, we wanted to double the laughs. If the first one had violence, we wanted to double the violence. If the first one had offensive elements, well, actually, we wanted to triple the offensive elements. That was always the DNA of this movie.” So does that DNA include T&A? Our Skin Skout saw a screening of the movie last night, and the answer is a qualified “Yes, but…” Read a full (and spoiler-heavy, you’ve been warned) report on Piranha 3DD after the jump!

Johnny Depp Secures Place As ‘Alpha Vampire’

‘Dark Shadows’ star tells Robert Pattinson that ‘there’s room for two vampires on this block.’ By Jocelyn Vena Johnny Depp and Robert Pattinson Photo: Warner Bros./ Summit In a recent interview with this big screen vampire, Johnny Depp opened up about any potential vampy face-offs with fellow heartthrob and big-screen bloodsucker Robert Pattinson. When asked if there’s any sort of blood feud with the “Twilight” star, Depp noted that it’s all cool between the two actors. “There’s room for two vampires on this block — as long as he remembers I am the Alpha Vampire,” he told UsMagazine.com at the London premiere of his campy vampire flick, “Dark Shadows,” which opens this weekend. Of course Edward Cullen and Barnabas Collins aren’t really cut from the same vampire DNA. Where Edward is brooding and sullen, Barnabas is on the other end of the spectrum, with his oddball charm and old-world demeanor. And their transitions to the modern world are quite different. While Edward had been living in the world over the course of his vampire life, Barnabas had been in a coffin for 200 years before emerging in the 1970s. When MTV News spoke to Depp about the film , he noted that exploring Barnabas’ evolution in the contemporary world was what drew him to the story. “Playing a kind of reluctant vampire, in a sense, the reluctant vampire who has been locked in a box for 200 years and his misfortune to be let out in an age when things are probably at their most surreal in terms of 1972,” Depp said. “It’s a very odd period. Things are changing radically; the sort of peace and love thing was over with, and we were rapidly approaching disco, so musically and aesthetically, that was the fun of it, to place this hyper-elegant figure from the late 18th century into one of the weirdest times of all time.” The film is the latest collaboration between Deep and director Tim Burton. It’s the big-screen adaptation of the 1960s soap opera of the same name. Who do you think is the Alpha Vampire: Edward Cullen or Barnabas Collins? Leave your pick below! Watch Wisecracking Guy Pearce Get Interrogated in First Five Minutes of Lockout

This week’s Guy Pearce -starring, Luc Besson -produced Lockout might look like a run of the mill action pic — that vague title doesn’t help things — but, as the film’s opening scenes show, it’s got a blustery ’80s-style hero at its core and a punny sense of humor to move things along. Get a taste for the brawny bravado and hijinks to come in the film’s first five minutes, viewable after the jump. The thing about the first five minutes of Lockout is that you’re either with it or not, and this is indeed your cup of tea, Lockout might be the most surprisingly fun action movie of 2012 you never saw coming. Pearce stars as Snow, a government agent wrongfully convicted after a mission gone wrong who is tapped to lead a one-man job into a high-security space prison to save the President’s daughter (Maggie Grace) from the psycho inmates who’ve taken over the place. It’s Pearce’s show, and though he told Movieline recently that he hadn’t had Snake Plisskin in mind during the shoot, there are more than a few strands of Escape from New York and its antihero in Lockout ‘s DNA. (Stay tuned for Movieline’s full chat with Pearce this week.) Much of this was featured in the first European trailer : The opening scene highlights both Pearce’s tough-guy appeal and his character’s penchant for baiting just about everyone with surly jokes, but the sequence is also notable for the tongue-in-cheek flair of co-directors Irish writer-directors James Mather and Stephen St. Leger. It’s a neat trick and a ballsy one to kick off a movie with, and that’s even before the flashback, bathroom fight scene, bed sheet gun flip, space helicopter assault, rooftop fall, and night market shootout. All in the first five minutes . Lockout is based on an original idea by co-writer Besson (of course) and hits theaters this Friday. [via MovieWeb ]
