How does one let something like this happen?!? The family of a 79-year-old dialysis patient is suing a Florida nurse who accidentally gave him a deadly dose of a drug that induces paralysis, instead of an antacid. “The hospital killed my dad,” said Marc Smith of Miami, Fla., whose father went into cardiac arrest after the nurse’s mistake at North Shore Medical Center in Miami. Richard Smith, who had a history of kidney disease, had been admitted to the ICU after a dialysis session where he experienced severe shortness of breath. The next day, July 30, 2010, he complained of an upset stomach, so the doctor prescribed the antacid. Marc Smith came by to visit that morning, and found his dad “unconscious, unresponsive and on a respirator.” “The nurse said my dad had coded. I said, ‘He coded? When did that happen?’” Smith looked at his dad’s chart, and found his father had been resuscitated about 10 minutes earlier. “The nurse basically told me, ‘Talk to the doctor,” Marc Smith said. When he did, he says, the doctor told him, “I’m sorry to have to tell you this but the nurse administered the wrong medication and sent your dad into respiratory arrest. He said the packaging looked the same and he grabbed the wrong package,” Marc Smith recalled. Uvo Ologboride, the nurse named in the lawsuit, had given Smith pancuronium. The drug, which is typically used during intubations, acts as a muscle relaxant and paralytic. In higher doses, pancuronium is used to administer lethal injections. Thirty minutes later, Smith was found unresponsive. Although doctors were able to revive Richard Smith, he was brain dead. He remained in a vegetative state until he died a month later. Wow. We can’t imagine what that family must be going through.. Source

In an interview conducted shortly before he was convicted of involuntary manslaughter, Dr. Conrad Murray says he doesn’t feel guilty about Michael Jackson dying. “I didn’t do anything wrong,” the cardiologist insists. The Today Show aired portions of an intense sit-down interview with Murray that was conducted before the guilty verdict was reached by a jury earlier this week. In it, he completely contradicts what he told police. Dr. Conrad Murray Documentary: Part 1 During the interview, Murray says he put Jackson to sleep that fateful day, then left the room to talk on the phone, because he didn’t want to wake Michael up. How courteous. Except MJ was on a hospital-grade anesthetic and shouldn’t have been unmonitored … and he told cops he only went to the can for two minutes. Murray’s admission seems to alter the timeline, again. Asked if he regretted leaving the room, he thought about it and said, “I regret that Michael has passed.” Read : I regret that I was blamed for it, due to my own gross negligence, and will now make a shameless film to slander the dead in a desperate PR move . Tonight, MSNBC aired its controversial documentary, Michael Jackson and the Doctor: A Fatal Friendship , which paints the singer in a very unflattering light . Among other things, it reveals potentially embarrassing medical details and shows Murray’s legal strategy meetings. Penn State wide receivers coach Mike McQueary, who witnessed Jerry Sandusky allegedly rape a boy in the team’s locker room in 2002, won’t coach this weekend. Out of fear for McQueary’s safety, the coach, who somehow still has a job, will not be on the field when the embattled Nittany Lions take on Nebraska tomorrow. The university released a statement reading, “Due to multiple threats made against assistant coach Mike McQueary, the university has decided it would be in the best interest of all for assistant coach McQueary not to be in attendance .” McQueary has been under fire for not doing anything to stop the alleged rape, and then going to Joe Paterno, the legendary head coach, instead of the police. Penn State fired Joe Paterno abruptly Wednesday night. Despite the fact that he didn’t stop Sandusky, the team’s former defensive coordinator, who was just indicted on 40 counts of child sex abuse, his job is safe for now. According to Pennsylvania’s Morning Call newspaper, the board, which was decisive in axing Paterno, does not plan to fire McQueary or ask him to step down. But he won’t be on the field tomorrow. The Penn State board of trustees have reportedly asked new interim coach Tom Bradley to keep Mike McQueary from coaching from the sidelines Saturday. As the sex scandal at the storied college football program continues to unravel, no word on whether Ashton Kutcher’s Twitter editors will weigh in on the latest.

Michael Jackson is not exactly portrayed glowingly in the new documentary centered on Dr. Conrad Murray. No wonder there is outrage among his family and fans. The controversial film debuted in the UK last night, just three days after Murray was found guilty of manslaughter in the death of Jackson. One major revelation: Emphatically, the doctor states that AEG Live CEO Randy Phillips told him before the This Is It tour Michael Jackson “does not have a f**king cent” to his name. Murray claims Phillips pulled him aside after a meeting about the London concerts and angrily said : “What’s this bullshit all about? Listen this guy is next to skid row.” “He’s going to be homeless. Nine security guards? Why does he need that? I’m paying for that s**t. I’m paying for the toilet paper he wipes his f**king ass with.” Or so Murray says in the documentary. Phillips took the stand during the manslaughter trial and, under oath, denied that conversation with Murray ever happened. “Michael Jackson and the Doctor: A Fatal Friendship” also reveals the strategy meetings between Dr. Murray and his two attorneys, Ed Chernoff and J. Michael Flanagan. During one session, Flanagan’s wife, Susan, offers this insight: “Explain to me a 50-year-old man who sleeps with a baby doll and has pictures of basically infants to 2-year-old children looking at him every night.” Chernoff says, “I think that the media made him appear weirder than he is.” Flanagan: “You gotta be kidding me, he can’t be any weirder than he is.” In the documetary, Murray claims Michael Jackson “always had a chamber that was exclusively his. The bedroom that he slept in … I had to persuade him, eventually to have it cleaned. Because … one, he peed the bed.” “It did not smell good. It was mildew, and I had to get it clean.” “Who would ever believe that a man his age would still be wetting his bed?” Murray added, noting that it wasn’t due to medication, but purely psychological. The documentary airs in the states, Friday night on MSNBC. Despite the objections of La Toya Jackson and MJ’s estate, the network will air it as planned.

‘Michael Jackson and the Doctor’ will premiere on MSNBC. By Gil Kaufman Dr. Conrad Murray Photo: Al Seib/ Getty Images Just five days after his conviction on a felony count of involuntary manslaughter in the death of Michael Jackson , a documentary about Dr. Conrad Murray will air on MSNBC. The special, “Michael Jackson and the Doctor,” will include footage of Murray insisting that Jackson “begged and pleaded” for the surgical anesthetic propofol. It will hit the airwaves a few days after Murray settled into Los Angeles County Jail , where he is awaiting a November 29 sentencing hearing following his conviction. “He asked me, ‘Please, please, Dr. Conrad … I need some milk [propofol] so that I can sleep,” Murray says in the special, according to MSNBC . “If I don’t get any sleep today, I cannot perform, I cannot do anything.” After nearly 10 hours of deliberation, the jury in the Murray case came back with a unanimous guilty verdict, agreeing the doctor acted in a fashion that caused Jackson’s death. The seven-man, five-woman jury made the decision after 49 witnesses and some bruising testimony from prosecution experts lashing Murray, a cardiologist with clinics in Texas and Las Vegas who was recruited in 2009 by Jackson to help the then-50-year-old star stay healthy in the run-up to his planned 50-date comeback tour, This Is It. The prosecution brought a long list of medical experts and emergency-room doctors to the stand to testify that Murray had not followed proper procedure in dealing with Jackson when the singer was in distress on the morning of June 25, 2009. They also presented evidence that the care Murray provided for Jackson in the weeks and months leading up to that fateful morning were substandard or outside the bounds of legal and ethical requirements. The witnesses concluded that Murray lacked the proper monitoring equipment to administer the surgical anesthetic propofol to Jackson, an off-label use of the intravenously delivered drug that was reportedly employed to help chronic insomniac Jackson get to sleep. According to TMZ , Murray signed on for the documentary back in 2009 just after MJ’s death, and it will feature scenes of infighting among his defense team. The MSNBC special will chronicle the trial from the perspective of Murray — who did not take the stand in the trial — and his defense team, including an interview with the doctor about the day Jackson died, in which he shares details about his relationship with the pop star. In one segment, Murray describes Jackson’s appearance the morning he died, saying the singer looked “hysterical” and was so distraught he resembled his ghoulish alter-ego from the iconic 1982 “Thriller” video. Cameras have followed Murray and his defense team for two years in compiling the film. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the movie’s distributor also acquired the rights to an exclusive interview Murray gave to British broadcaster Steve Hewlett on October 30, which is reportedly the only interview Murray plans to give on the trial. “I think in many ways, there were some mirror images in our lives,” Murray says about MJ in the special. “I’ve seen him cry so many times. He lived a life greater than a hundred years of pain of any human.” The verdict is in on the Conrad Murray trial. Stick with MTV News for continued coverage, updates and analysis on MTVNews.com . Giuliana Rancic has cancer. The E! personality had an announcement to make during a Monday appearance on Today, which we expected to be a joyous one: That she was pregnant at last. That made the actual announcement all the more heartbreaking. “I have early stage breast cancer,” the 37-year-old told Today host Ann Curry, adding that her doctor made the frightening discovery back in August as she was about to begin IVF. Rancic explained that her doctor sternly insisted that she get a mammogram before going through with the third IVF treatment. That might have saved her life. The star, who said she has no family history of breast cancer, “wasn’t prepared to get a mammogram until I was 40 years old,” she admitted. “I never in my wildest dreams expected anything to be wrong.” When the hospital called a few days later to tell her the shocking news, Rancic says she was “sobbing… It was like the world just crashed around me.” But she says, “I will be okay, because I found it early. I’m doing surgery this coming week, and then I go to radiation for six and a half weeks.” At her side throughout the ordeal, of course, is doting husband Bill Rancic. “Bill is unbelievable,” Giuliana gushed. “He lets me cry when I want to cry.” “He just lets me feel what I want to feel.” As for her pregnancy plans, she says this: “I’m not gonna give up. That baby will have saved my life,” she mused. “There’s some master plan. Now I know that [God] was looking out for me. I think a lot of us think we’re invincible. We have to start putting ourselves on the to do list.” Terrifying as it must have been, thank goodness it was caught early. Here’s wishing Giuliana and all those suffering from cancer a full and fast recovery. [Photo: WENN.com]
