New details have emerged regarding former Major League Baseball star Manny Ramirez and his arrest yesterday on charges of domestic violence . According to the police report obtained by TMZ , Manny’s wife, Juliana, said her husband “struck her in the left side of the face with an open hand causing her to hit her head against the headboard of the bed” during an argument inside their home. She then dialed 911, but refused medical attention. Ramirez claims he merely “grabbed” Juliana by the shoulders and she accidentally crashed into the headboard when he “shrugged her.” At a hearing this morning in Broward Country, Manny’s bond was set at $2,500 and a judge ordered him against having any contact with his wife until an investigation was complete. The last team the slugger played for, meanwhile, is not suffering from his absence in the lineup: the Tampa Bay Rays only trail the Boston Red Sox by three games in the chase for the American League Wild Card.
Has Tyler Shields crossed a line? A new spread of Glee star Heather Morris depicts the actress with a black eye, causing many to wonder why a photographer would actually invoke an image of domestic violence in such a way. Easy, says the man behind it: I didn’t. “In no way were we promoting domestic violence,” Shields tells E! News “We wanted to do a bruised-up Barbie shoot and that’s exactly what we did!” More shots are available at Tyler’s official site . They all feature Morris with a black eye; some involve the use of an iron and its chord. “I don’t know if Tyler is aware but I’m quite sure there are plenty of women who have been abused by these kinds of household appliances and children as well being hit with electrical cords,” says Rita Smith, executive director for the Denver-based National Coalition Against Domestic Violence. “I’m not sure what the purpose is other than shock value.” Shields has courted controversy in the past with photo shoots. There was this one of Lindsay Lohan , covered in blood, just a few weeks ago. What do you think of the artist’s latest work? Has he gone too far?
It’s hard to believe that its been ten years since Aaliyah left us. Many of us remember exactly where we were when we heard the tragic news that Aaliyah’s life had been cut short by a plane accident in the Bahamas on August 25, 2001. Her memory will not be forgotten anytime soon. The singer-actress began her career in 1991 when her uncle, Barry Hankerson, signed her to Blackground Records. Three years later, her debut album, Age Ain’t Nothin’ But A Number , would be released. Audiences were immediately captivated by the teenager’s street-smart style and angelic voice. Her debut single, “Back & Forth,” topped the Billboard R&B/Hip Hop singles chart for three weeks. The follow-up single, a cover of the Isley Brothers’ “At Your Best (You Are Love),” peaked at number six on the Billboard Hot 100. With the release of her second album, 1996′s One In A Million , Aaliyah helped changed the sound of R&B and Hip-Hop thanks to her new collaborators, Missy Elliot and Timbaland. With singles like “If Your Girl Only Knew,” “One In A Million,” “Hot Like Fire,” and “4 Page Letter,” it was obvious that Aaliyah’s star was on the rise. In 1998, Aaliyah was invited to the Academy Awards ceremony where she performed the Oscar nominated song “Journey To The Past” from the film Anastasia. Later in 1998, Aaliyah released yet another single from a soundtrack. This time it was “Are You That Somebody” from the Eddie Murphy film Dr. Doolittle . The single would become one of Aaliyah’s most popular with its stellar production and highly choreographed video. Two years later the singer would add the title of “actress” to her resume when she starred in the film Romeo Must Die opposite martial arts expert Jet Li. The film debuted at number two on its opening weekend and spawned two hit Aaliyah singles, “Come Back In One Piece” with DMX, and the chart topping “Try Again.” After completing work on Romeo Must Die , Aaliyah went straight to work on the vampire film Queen Of The Damned and was also slated to appear in the sequels to the popular film The Matrix . She also found time to put in work on her third album, the eponymously titled Aaliyah which was preceded by the mysterious and sexy video for “We Need A Resolution.” After wrapping up filming in the Bahamas for the Aaliyah album’s second single, “Rock The Boat,” Aaliyah and eight others were killed in a crash shortly after their plane took off from the island on August 25th, 2001. She was 22 years old. UPDATE: Health insurance companies will now be required to provide women free birth control, in keeping with the new Obama administration guidelines. The new guidelines, which the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) labeled “historic,” will require new health insurance plans to include women’s preventive services including FDA approved contraceptives, breast feeding support, and well-women visits — all without charging a co-payment, co-insurance or a deductible — beginning August 1, 2012. Ladies, keep in mind you still have to protect yourself against sexually transmitted diseases. Michelle Obama: First Female Public Figure To Appear On Better Homes & Garden Another birth control revolution may be on the horizon. Fifty years after the pill was introduced, free contraception for women in the U.S., may be in effect thanks to the new health care law by the Obama administration. According to the LA Times , the Obama administration, is recommending that all U.S.-approved birth control methods — including the “morning after pill,” taken shortly after intercourse to forestall pregnancy — be added to the federal government’s list of preventive health services. The IOM noted that women with unplanned pregnancies were more likely to put off or neglect prenatal care and to smoke, drink or experience depression. The recommendation to add birth control is a big gain for organizations like the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and Planned Parenthood, but is likely to stoke opposition from conservative and religious groups. Other services recommended by IOM include screening for gestational diabetes, testing for human papillomavirus (HPV) in women over 30, counseling for HIV and sexually transmitted infections, lactation counseling, screening for domestic violence and yearly wellness visits. The power of the P-U-*-*-Y A Bronx man stabbed his girlfriend to death on a balcony in full view of terrified neighbors Tuesday, then was shot by cops, police and witnesses said. The mayhem began about 8:30 a.m. when cops responded to a 911 call for a fight between the couple, identified by police sources as Terenace Williams and Frederick Mendez. The pair have a history of domestic violence incidents, police said. “When the argument started, everyone came outside,” said neighbor Tommy Brown, 38. “She didn’t want to have sex, she didn’t want to sleep with him. That’s what they were arguing about.” Cops arrived to find Mendez stabbing Williams and attempting to throw her off their third-floor apartment balcony on Needham Ave. in the Bronx, police said. “He had her by a headlock and kept stabbing her,” said neighbor Oscar Brinson, 47. “A woman kept saying, ‘Let her go!’ and he screamed, ‘No, she ruined my life!’” A cop fired at Mendez, hitting him two or three times, police sources said. Mendez screamed in pain and retreated into the apartment, locking himself inside. Cops on a neighboring balcony pulled Williams to safety. She was taken to Jacobi Medical Center, but could not be saved, cops said. Williams worked as a nurse, neighbors said. What’s sad is that it seems as if the folks in the building might have seen this coming… “That man is a crazy man,” said a neighbor across the hall from the couple who declined to give her name. “He was always so controlling. I told him to leave her alone all the time. He always complained about her, saying she’s a bad person.” All the women in this world and you trippin’ because one wouldn’t give you any?? Parents Television Council and Industry Ears criticize depiction of murder in new clip. By Gil Kaufman Rihanna Photo: Jeff Kravitz/ WireImage Rihanna has more than said her piece about how her 2009 assault at the hands of ex-boyfriend Chris Brown has affected her. But in the new video for her single, “Man Down,” the singer is depicted shooting an unarmed man in the head in cold blood at a train station in what viewers later learn is retaliation for a previous sexual assault. “Mama, I just shot a man dead,” Rihanna sings in the video, which debuted on BET on Tuesday. The Parents Television Council, the Enough Is Enough campaign and the entertainment think tank Industry Ears released a statement on Wednesday condemning the video for what the group said was an apparent enticement to young women to turn to violence. ” ‘Man Down’ is an inexcusable, shock-only, shoot-and-kill theme song,” said Industry Ears co-founder Paul Porter, a former programming director at BET. The lyrics to the song match the narrative of the video, including such lines as, “I didn’t mean to end his life/ I know it wasn’t right … I took his heart when/ I pulled out that gun … Oh mama, mama, mama/ I just shot a man down/ In central station/ In front of a big ol’ crowd.” The PTC lamented that Rihanna had a “golden opportunity” to use her celebrity status to send an important message to young girls and victims of rape and domestic violence with the clip, but had missed the mark. “Instead of telling victims they should seek help, Rihanna released a music video that gives retaliation in the form of premeditated murder the imprimatur of acceptability,” said the PTC’s Melissa Henson. Though a spokesperson for Rihanna could not be reached for comment, the singer took to Twitter on Monday to give her fans a preview of the clip’s message. She wrote that it had a “very strong underlying message 4 girls like me.” MTV News spoke with director Anthony Mandler last month, when he revealed that Rihanna let him take the visual to the extreme. “We shot the video last month in Jamaica, and it’s my favorite song she’s ever recorded, so I was really excited to get involved,” he said. “And it’s just one of those songs that demands a strong narrative and visual, and let’s just say, she let me go all the way. So I think you can expect something that’s dramatic and shocking and intense and emotional and uplifting and enlightening.” The organizations have called for BET to stop airing the video immediately. A spokesperson for BET could not be reached at press time. For her part, Rihanna has continued to tout the empowerment message of the clip, tweeting on Wednesday, “Young girls/women all over the world … we are a lot of things! We’re strong innocent fun flirtatious vulnerable, and sometimes our innocence can cause us to be naive! We always think it could NEVER be us, but in reality, it can happen to ANY of us! So ladies be careful and #listentoyomama! I love you and I care!” It’s not the first time Rihanna has been embroiled in a video controversy. Her sexually-suggestive “S&M” clip was banned in a number of countries earlier this year, and some questioned whether she was glorifying domestic violence around the release of the video for her hit Eminem collaboration, “Love the Way You Lie.” What do you think of Rihanna’s video?
