Matt Lauer vs. Bill O’Reilly: Did the Media Exploit Whitney Houston?

On The Today Show this morning, Matt Lauer and Bill O’Reilly engaged in a fascinating debate. It stemmed from the latter’s belief that Whitney Houston had a death wish, that nobody abuses drugs or alcohol in such a way ” if they want to stay on the planet .” Lauer countered this point by saying “addiction is a disease,” but O’Reilly shot back: “It’s a mental disease. You have free will when it comes to addiction. You don’t have free will when it comes to lung cancer.” Matt Lauer Interviews Bill O’Reilly (Audio) The main topic of the discourse, though, centered on the media’s handling of Whitney’s long struggle with substance abuse, with O’Reilly labeling all reports over the years as “sensationalized to exploit the woman’s condition, not try to help her. “You know what we in the media do, Lauer?” he asked. “We wink-wink it. We Snoop Dogg it. We Willie Nelson it. ‘Hey, oh yeah, they’re stoned, that’s fine.'” Is O’Reilly in favor of lowering flags in New Jersey Saturday in honor of Houston’s funeral? Yes, he believes we should respect the singer’s life. But he also believes journalists should have done the same for her before she died by taking a harsher stance on her drug problem. Listen to the audio above and take a side.

Adele is very sorry, but she’s also very sick. The ultra talented, popular singer canceled one show at Plymouth Pavilions in England last night and has done the same for this evening’s scheduled performance at Bournemouth International Centre. The Latest Trailer for Footloose Does Not — In Fact — Cut Loose

First 50/50 released a theatrical trailer some 30 seconds shorter than its teaser trailer, and now Footloose has done the same thing. Is this the beginnings of a trend? Have the definitions of “trailer” and “teaser” been reversed at some point in the last 48 hours? Will there be a memo sent out explaining the cause? Silly questions, sure, but also more interesting than what’s presented in the somewhat boring new trailer for Footloose . Bring back the “teaser”!

Camille Grammer Sues for Custody of Children, Kelsey Fires Back

In round 216 of their never-ending, nauseating battle, Camille Grammer has fired back at her ex, Kelsey. In mid-May, the former sitcom star filed for custody of the children he shares with the Real Housewife of Beverly Hills. Now, claiming the actor took such a step “in order to create a false impression to the media and to wrongfully disparage” her, Camille has essentially done the same, submitting documents and fighting for primary custody of sons Mason, 9, and Jude, 6. In response, TMZ has obtained the legal papers Kelsey has filed in return, which state he has no hope that a settlement will be reached and – once an expert has completed an investigation of all involved – he wants the case to move to trial. It’s an ugly mess, with two young children caught in between. [Photos: WENN.com]

Katy Perry Compares Miley Cyrus to Britney Spears

Last month, Miley Cyrus compared herself to Britney Spears . Now, Katy Perry has gone ahead and done the same thing – but with a very different meaning behind it. According to Life & Style , Perry caught a glimpse of Miley’s outfits at the 2010 MuchMusic Awards and said to a friend: “Oh my God, poor girl… She’s Britney Spears all over again. It’s happening right before our eyes… she’s definitely headed the Britney route. It’s worse. Look at those outfits. It’s bad.” We’ve been saying the same thing for weeks, of course… but we don’t go around posing for Esquire like this . Makes it a bit tough for Perry to present her case, doesn’t it? Meanwhile, Cyrus joined Dolly Parton on stage for a duet outside Knoxville this weekend. She actually sounded great, making her current image that much more frustrating. As you can see below, when Miley sings country and wears clothing, she’s a quality artist: Miley and Dolly

‘Karate Kid’ Reboot Has ‘A Different Vibe,’ Ralph Macchio Says

‘They are two different movies with the same story,’ he tells MTV News. By Susannah Gora Ralph Macchio in “The Karate Kid” Photo: Columbia Pictures Thanks to Ralph Macchio , many of us who came of age in the 1980s spent our formative years perfecting our “standing crane” karate technique on the beach, trying to catch flies with chopsticks or searching fruitlessly for a shower-curtain Halloween costume. Macchio’s endearing, uplifting and now-iconic portrayal of Daniel LaRusso, the titular character in 1984’s “The Karate Kid,” helped the film achieve massive commercial success (it grossed more than $90 million in an era when that really meant something and spawned three sequels) and critical respect. The original franchise was a tough act to follow, and yet, Columbia Pictures did just that, with a reboot starring Jaden Smith and Jackie Chan that debuted at #1 at the box office last week. After attending the remake’s premiere, Macchio said the new film “has a very different vibe.” Indeed, the action has shifted from Southern California to Beijing, the protagonist is a preteen and, uh, nobody’s doing karate (the remake centers on kung fu instead).”It is bigger, the fighting’s more intense, and the landscape is international. It is well-done and effective, as they have stuck to the original’s story points. … They are two different movies with the same story.” He also said Smith and Chan have a nice connection onscreen: “Jaden and Jackie have strong chemistry, which is important.” And what of the fact that the remake focuses on a different martial art altogether? “It’s all kung fu, so the decision to call it ‘The Karate Kid’ is clearly a studio, show-business decision.” Macchio is getting a lot of attention these days from a self-mocking Funny or Die video called “Wax On, F— Off.” The clip is a trailer for a faux documentary, in which the sweet, mild-mannered Macchio tries to jumpstart his career by acting like a bad boy — or his version of it. Featuring cameos from the likes of Molly Ringwald (who deadpans, “He tried to get into the Brat Pack, but he wanted to change the name to the Smile Bunch”), the video “takes shots at me,” Macchio said. “My nice-guy persona, my legacy and youthful-ish looks, and it also comments on scandal and the media.” One image in the video — when Macchio stands in front of the poster of the “Karate Kid” remake and tries, unsuccessfully, to do a karate kick — is both funny and bittersweet. “What makes ‘Karate Kid’ such a timeless story is the relatable human element,” Macchio said of the 1984 film. “We’ve all been the kid attempting to navigate through adolescence and looking for guidance. Having the mentor to help see you through is something we all yearn for when faced with obstacles. Young or old, generations have embraced Daniel and Miyagi — those characters have become a part of everyone’s lives growing up. It’s a privilege to be a part of that magic. Regardless of the success of this remake, the soul, magic and legacy of our original film will always stand.” Susannah Gora is the author of “You Couldn’t Ignore Me If You Tried: The Brat Pack, John Hughes, And Their Impact on a Generation.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Karate Kid.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Megan Fox Hopes She’s ‘Lucky Enough’ To Have A Long Career

‘I haven’t done the same thing twice, and I want to keep moving in that direction,’ ‘Jonah Hex’ actress tells MTV News. By Josh Wigler, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Megan Fox Photo: Bill Sloyer/ MTV News Sometimes, it’s hard to fathom that Megan Fox ‘s prominent place in the pop-culture conversation only dates back to her 2007 breakout role as Mikaela Banes in director Michael Bay’s “Transformers.” Since then, she’s appeared in four films and has two more completed projects on the way, including this weekend’s “Jonah Hex.” And if Fox has her way, she’ll be kicking around on the big screen for several more years to come. “If I’m lucky enough,” Fox told MTV News about her hopes to make her acting career a longtime commitment. “I mean, I would love the opportunity to do that. But that’s not really up to me; that’s up to the world.” Surely, the world would throw its support behind Fox’s desires to stay on the big screen, if only because of her incredibly entertaining offscreen antics (see: her notorious Michael Bay feud ). But Fox doesn’t believe she’s a provocative personality , so much as a misinterpreted one. “I don’t feel like I’ve ever necessarily said anything that was provocative,” she said. “I think that people take relatively innocent statements and turn them into provocative things. … People have no idea how to react. It’s not that the statement itself is outrageous.” As for what the future holds for Fox aside from “Jonah Hex,” the actress will be seen opposite Mickey Rourke in “Passion Play,” a film in which she plays a winged circus performer. Additionally, she remains attached to “Fathom,” an action film based on the comic book created by the late Michael Turner. Beyond those commitments, Fox has only one concrete plan: mixing it up. “I don’t have anything specific, like, a specific genre film that I want to do,” she said. “I just want to keep doing things that are completely different, because so far, I haven’t done the same thing twice, and I want to keep moving in that direction.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Jonah Hex.” For breaking news and previews of the latest comic book movies — updated around the clock — visit SplashPage.MTV.com . New Kate Gosselin Book Tanks Hard

Kate Gosselin’s latest book isn’t exactly flying off the shelves, which is a good thing too, because if it were, the apocalypse might be imminent. Since its April 13 release, I Just Want You to Know: Letters to My Kids on Love, Faith, and Family has sold 10,084 copies, according to reports. That’s 10,084 more than we’d hope, but still a low total. Gosselin’s new non-fiction title debuted at #11 on the New York Times ‘ non fiction bestseller list, and at #103 on USA Today’s bestsellers chart. By Thursday afternoon, its Amazon rank was #862. This is in spite of Kate Gosselin relentlessly hawking the book (while being absent from the kids, ironically), and being on Dancing with the Stars. Has the book-buying public tired of Kate? Jim Milliot, business and news director of Publishers Weekly , recently stated that the numbers “nowhere near a blockbuster” and ” not that impressive .” Not that surprising, either. A Kate Gosselin book about parenting? After all this? Would you buy a Lindsay Lohan book on teetotalling? Just curious. By contrast, the 35-year-old mom’s first two books, Multiple Blessings and Eight Little Faces, both climbed to number five on the New York Times ‘ list. Multiple Blessings sold 523,000 copies in 2009. I Just Want You to Know “continues [Kate’s] story of faith and family. Using excerpts and written prayers from her journal, Kate offers an intimate look at the heart of a mother during the years her family transitioned from obscurity to fame.” In related news, Jon Gosselin is reportedly penning a memoir, I Just Want to Hit That: A Divorced Father of Eight’s Quest For Mediocre Rebound Girls .
