Drake Thinks JoJo ‘Killed It’ On ‘Marvin’s Room’ Remix

‘It meant a lot coming from him,’ JoJo tells MTV News on VMA black carpet about Drizzy’s response. By Jocelyn Vena JoJo Photo: MTV News LOS ANGELES — JoJo has certainly grown up somewhere between releasing “Leave (Get Out)” back in 2004 as a 14-year-old and her very NSFW remix of Drake’s “Marvin’s Room.” As soon as JoJo dropped the sultry, sassy track , redubbed “Marvin’s Room (Can’t Do Better),” earlier this summer, blogs and music lovers went crazy over her mature voice and even more mature lyrical content. In the song, she coos lines like “F— that new girl that you like so bad/ She’s not crazy like me, I bet you like that.” Much like the Drizzy version, JoJo’s version is a swirling ode to drunk dialing that special someone, and the longing of the track seemed to resonate with folks — which is the most surprising part to JoJo, considering she drops a few F-bombs. “I was shocked!” she told MTV News on Sunday night on the VMA black carpet about the overwhelmingly positive reaction to the remix. So how did she end up recording her answer to Drake’s track? “Well, one of my friends was like, ‘Jo, you gotta hear this new Drake song!’ I loved it, and I thought Drake was really emotional and honest,” she explained. “I was like, ‘This a great record,’ so I had a little time in the car ride [on my way to the airport]. So I wrote my version in the car ride, and I landed in L.A., I went to the studio, I recorded it, and the next day I put it on the Internet, and people really, really loved it. And I was totally shocked, ’cause I was scared to use the F-word, and I didn’t know how people would respond to it.” The track, produced by Jordan Gatsby and featuring vocals from Travis Garland, is not only fan-approved, but also approved by the Canadian rapper himself. “He said I killed it and that he was really happy with everyone’s response,” she said of Drake’s reaction. “It meant a lot coming from him. It was all out of respect.” The 28th annual MTV Video Music Awards have wrapped, but the real action is just getting started! Urban music’s top creators shared the stage August 26 at BMI’s Urban Awards at the Pantages Theater in Hollywood. The annual event celebrates the songwriters, producers and music publishers of the past year’s most-performed r&b, rap and hip-hop songs in the BMI repertoire. Lil Wayne And Drake To Drop Joint Album

‘That’s definitely going to get done,’ Cash Money honcho Birdman confirms to XXLmag.com. By Rob Markman Drake and Lil Wayne Photo: Julia Beverly Move over Jay-Z and Kanye West , here come Lil Wayne and Drake . While Hov and Yeezy have pretty much dominated the hip-hop conversation this week with the release of their collaborative Watch the Throne, Cash Money CEO Bryan “Birdman” Williams took it up a notch when he confirmed on Friday (August 12) that Weezy and Drizzy Drake will also be joining forces on an upcoming project. “Wayne and I recently talked about [the Weezy/Drake collabo album],” Baby told XXLmag.com . “That’s definitely going to get done.” Birdman is himself no stranger to joint LPs: In 2006, the #1 Stunna shared billing with Wayne on their Like Father, Like Son album. Now, in 2011, the tag-team trend appears to be gaining even more traction. Eminem and Royce Da 5’9″ got together as Bad Meets Evil on their Hell: The Sequel EP in June. Of course, there’s Jay and ‘Ye’s Throne, which dropped this week, as did Gucci Mane and Waka Flocka Flame’s Ferrari Boyz LP . Back in January, during a radio interview with the U.K.’s Tim Westwood, Drake spoke on his plans to work with Wayne on a joint project. “We still got to do that album,” he said. “I heard some other guys are coming out with an album too. There’s two other rappers that are coming out with an album together. … I don’t know where they got that idea but …” Hear why Royce Da 5’9″ thinks tag-team albums are good for the game. Baby drew a clear distinction, however, between the Throne’s sound and the sound that Drake and Weezy will be coming with. “It’s older versus younger,” he said. “I listened to a few songs [off Watch the Throne ], and it feels like an older feel to me. I think with Drake and Wayne, they young, they young cats. You got 23 and 28. Then you got Jay-Z and them, who are older and really on their way out the game. Then you got Wayne and Drake and them, who are still youthful to the game. So it’s two different types of music all the way across the board.” Baby did acknowledge the mark that Jay and Kanye have made on the music industry with their WTT release. “But what they’re doing is great. I think it’s great for the game, great for the business, great for retail as a whole,” he continued. “I just think when Wayne and Drake get together, [it’s] going to be something real special also because we more youthful.” With songs like “Successful,” “Miss Me” and “Right Above It” already under their belts, there is no doubt that Wayne and Drake have developed a chemistry, but as for when the duo would actually drop the project, Birdman couldn’t say. Wayne’s Tha Carter IV is due on August 29 and Drake’s sophomore work, Take Care, drops just two months later on October 24, so it may be some time.
