Mavado On Co-Starring In Drake’s ‘Find Your Love’ Video

Dancehall star says he may appear on a remix for the song. By Rahman Dukes Mavado Photo: Young Money Dancehall artist Mavado is one bad dude. In the Anthony Mandler-directed clip for Drake’s latest single, “Find Your Love,” the singer delivers on his promise of a threat against Drizzy, who was warned to stay away from the Boss’ lady. As a result, Drake pays the ultimate price for his decision to move forward with his romantic pursuit of Mavado’s leading lady (or does he? The ending of the video is left open). But when the cameras are off, Movado says he Drake are good friends. “Me and Drake were friends for quite some time now,” Mavado told MTV News on Tuesday (May 11). “He ended up coming to Jamaica together with me while I was finishing my album. And he said, ‘Yo, I want to do this in Jamaica.’ The video with me and Drake, it’s a bit different, but trust me, it’s very perfect. I’m loving that video.” Mavado’s character in “Find Your Love,” Puffy, is first introduced in the video at Kingston’s landmark Asylum Club, although it’s called “The Building” in the clip. Mavado said that’s just one of the ideas he brought to the table for the dramatic clip. “They came up with the script and I knew what they really wanted,” he said. “Me and my man, we’re in Jamaica and I’m on the ‘Gully Side,’ so I know just the perfect spot.” Contrary to the storyline in the video, which ends with Drake’s capture by some of the island’s most notorious thugs — a.k.a. “dogs” — Mavado said his people had nothing but love for the Canadian. “It’s a good vibe on the ‘Gully Side’ and the part where I’m from, the people love him there.” Last month during his Away From Home Tour, Drake echoed Mavado’s words “We went to this ‘hood. They call it the ‘gully’ side’ ” Drake said. “It’s bad out there, real bad. They had ‘Young Money’ sprayed on the gates, ‘Drake and Wayne,’ ’cause I came to shoot the video out there. I’m talking about you drive by people’s homes, they had ‘Drake,’ ‘Young Money,’ ‘Drake, Welcome Here,’ ‘Drake We Love You’ — crazy sh–, man. It was so crazy. This dude was like, ‘Original Weezy tha God! You tha boss! Weezy tha God!’ It’s crazy. They love us, ’cause we show love out there.” According to Mavado, the collaboration on “Find Your Love” is just the first offering between the pair, and fans should expect more to come. “Me and Drake, we already been talking about it but you know, Drake is on his tour doing his thing. But I guess when it’s the right time, it’s going to happen. I believe it’s soon. I’m supposed to do a remix for that song.” What do you think of Drake’s new video? Let us know in the comments below! Drake Was ‘Fearless’ In Making ‘Find Your Love’ Video, Director Says

‘It’s kind of like the anti-love love story,’ Anthony Mandler says. By Jayson Rodriguez Drake Photo: Young Money Entertainment As both a newcomer and budding superstar, Drake draws a high level of scrutiny toward himself with each new song or video he releases. That trend continued Tuesday (May 11) with the premiere of his latest clip, “Find Your Love,” directed by Anthony Mandler. “It’s unbelievable the amount of attention that he garners,” Mandler told MTV News. “Since the video dropped, I think I’ve received 200 e-mails, Facebook questions, tweets. There’s a fascination with him and there’s certainly been a void in music that he’s come to fill.” According to Mandler, Drake’s allure lies in his ability to fit in across various groups. That idea was at the heart of the two clips he’s helmed for Drake, “Over” and “Find Your Love.” For their collaboration, he explained, the two played against the convention of who Drake may or may not be. “I think part of that is the kind of way he works across genres, the way he works across tonalities: is he black, is he white, he’s aligned with Wayne and the streets, but he’s a nice guy from Toronto,” Mandler said. “And that really was the theme with ‘Over.’ Especially with the album and the dualities in the music to come, in one song he rhymes and another song he sings, the artists he working with — he’s very hard to pin down. Part of the objective of making this video was to do that same twist again, to give you something unexpected, not only tonality with the song but with the video thematically. It’s kind of like the anti-love love story.” In the video, Drake is advised to get out of dodge when he tries to woo the love interest of a local gang lord. He ignores the words of the elder Jamaican sage and instead ventures into the ghettos of “Gully Side” to see his leading lady once more. As Drake and the man speak, words run across the screen warning of the perils of unknowingly taking things too far. “It’s really about crossing lines, what was said in the first scene,” Mandler said about Drake’s chase for love. “It’s about really understanding what’s right and what’s wrong and it’s really easy to lose that when you’re the center of attention.” The director said the idea of “Find Your Love” was to serve as a follow-up to “Over,” which he felt helped to clear the slate of everything pre- Thank Me Later, Drake’s forthcoming debut album. The idea behind “Find You Love” was to feature visuals to begin a new story in the young rapper’s life. Mandler applauded Drake’s efforts in making the clip happen. “He did it fearlessly,” Mandler beamed. “He did it without any sign of hesitation. That was incredible. He wanted to do something that went further with the song, that took the essence of the song but communicated it with imagery that made people think, rather than go up the middle and make an obvious R&B video. That’s completely not who Drake is.” What do you think the story behind Drake’s video? Let us know in the comments! Related Videos Storyllne Videos: Drake, Lady Gaga, M.I.A

Drake Messes With Wrong Girl In ‘Find Your Love’ Video

Rapper is chased down by a gang after pursuing the boss’ lady. By Jayson Rodriguez Drake in his “Find Your Love” video Photo: Young Money You don’t mess with the boss’ girl. It’s an age-old adage that Drake is apparently still learning in his new video, “Find Your Love,” which premiered Tuesday (May 11) on MTV.com. In the clip, directed by Anthony Mandler (who’s worked with Jay-Z, John Mayer and Mary J. Blige), an ominous message runs across the bottom of the screen foreshadowing the action to come, as an elderly man advises Drake to get out of town: “The worst thing about crossing a line is when you don’t know you already have. …” Drake fires back, ignoring the advice, as images of his leading lady Maliah Michel flash before his eyes: “It’s just hard for me to up and leave like that. “I don’t understand how you can own somebody,” he continues. “If I leave and I don’t see her, I feel like I really have a regret, I’m gonna go home and think what if?” From there, things rewind to Drake in a dancehall club in the heart of Kingston, Jamaica . Standing in the VIP area with scantily-clad females gyrating around him, the Toronto MC ignores his present company when he spots Michel, who’s dancing suggestively herself with dancehall superstar Mavado , who plays the head gangster in the clip. Drake and Michel’s eyes lock in a gaze, however, and soon he’s making his move on the video vixen. In the next scene, at a beach party, Drake approaches Michel as members of Mavado’s gang idle nearby and watch the interaction. The crooning rapper then kisses her on the hand and she pulls him in closer with a welcoming smile. As Drake and Michel leave the party to walk to the beach, the gang members ride out on their motorcycles to relay to the boss what’s going on with his lady. Mavado is informed about the “brown boy” who’s been causing trouble and orders action. “Do it now,” he tells his underling. Back in the present, an unsuspecting Drake is walking through “Gully” town, searching for his lover. Memories of his rendezvous with her play back in his mind, from their playful flirtation on the beach to the sizzling bedroom scene. When Drake arrives at the compound where Michel is located, he peers over the gate to call for her right when Mavado and his rude boys descend behind him. Guns are drawn and Drake is captured by the goons. The camera zooms in toward the house, where Michel appears to have a look of consternation on her face. The Young Money rookie is then tied up and placed in a chair in a basement, surrounded by members of Mavado’s gang. A weary but unharmed Drake quietly sits as Mavado chastises him for coming to Jamaica and thinking he could take his woman. Then, much to Drake’s surprise, his would-be love, sitting on Mavado’s lap, coldly rises to her feet, takes the gun placed on the gangster’s lap and walks slowly toward her fling. Clarity washes over Drake as he realizes he was set up from the beginning. Michel makes her way behind Drake, raises the gun, and then three gunshots ring out in synch with the words “Find Your Love” flashing across the screen. What do you think about Drake’s new video? Drake Says Jay-Z Wasn’t Immediately Sold On ‘Over’

Jay likened the Thank Me Later single to a girl who isn’t the cutest but is still sexy. By Jayson Rodriguez Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images Drake’s breakout mixtape, So Far Gone, set the bar pretty high for his upcoming debut album, Thank Me Later. His first offering, “Over,” was intensely debated, but DJs co-signed the single almost immediately. One critic, however, wasn’t as quick to deliver praise. According to Drake, Jay-Z had to warm up to the record. “I got a funny e-mail today from Jay-Z about [‘Over’],” Drake said during a conference call for DJs . The Toronto lyricist said Jay offered an analogy to describe the way the track grew on him. He compared the song to “the girl you see at the club, she’s not the cutest,” Drake explained. “But then you speak to her and realize that she’s one of the sexiest women of all time.” Drake premiered his follow-up to “Over” early Thursday morning (April 29), the Kanye West-produced “Find Your Love.” He recently shot a video for the track in Jamaica, and images from the set have leaked online. Two other Thank Me Later tracks, “Fireworks” and “Shut It Down” (featuring The-Dream), have sprung up online. Drake also revealed during the call that he might have a bonus track on his debut album featuring Lupe Fiasco and upstart MC J. Cole. “I think that would be a special moment for hip-hop fans,” he said, before adding a joke. “For people that are disappointed when I drop songs like ‘Find Your Love,’ I think they would appreciate that. Hopefully they’re both willing.” Do you want to hear Drake’s collabo with Lupe and J. Cole? Let us know in the comments! Related Artists Drake Jay-Z

Drake Keeps Lil Wayne’s Name Alive At BMI Unsigned Urban Showcase

Birdman, Lloyd, Big Boi, Sean Garrett, DJ Drama and others take the stage at 13th annual Atlanta show. By Jayson Rodriguez Drake performs at BMI’s 13th Annual Unsigned Urban Showcase on Tuesday Photo: Jayson Rodriguez/ MTV News ATLANTA — Drake’s a man of his word. On his latest single, “Over,” the young spitter promises that “the Young Money ship is never sinking.” And with Lil Wayne away, the So Far Gone lyricist has continued to soldier on for the camp as evident on his Away From Home tour . On Tuesday night, Drake headlined BMI’s 13th Annual Unsigned Urban Showcase and gave a shout to his incarcerated YM boss, along with fellow jailed MCs Lil Boosie and Gucci Mane. “Free Tunechi and Boosie and free Gucci,” Drake rapped during a freestyle, before telling the crowd that “they make some great music.” The event, held at the Havana Club, was hosted by crooner Lloyd and featured opening act Travis Porter and OutKast’s Big Boi, who was honored with the Legends of ATL Award. Lloyd pulled double duty during the festivities, joining Drake and his band onstage for a series of R&B-tinged hits, like “Successful” and “A Night Off.” Drake then picked things up with rowdier fare like “Uptown” and “Over.” “I know way too many people here right now that I didn’t know last year, who the f— are y’all?” he sang on the hook. Those in attendance for the packed performance included Jermaine Dupri, songwriter Sean Garrett, producer Jazze Pha, Bobby V., and DJ Drama, who co-hosted the proceedings. Drake later pulled Birdman onstage with him for their collaboration “Money to Blow.” The Cash Money boss and Drizzy did their best to keep Wayne’s name active while the rapper completes his jail sentence. “When I say ‘free,’ you say ‘Weezy,’ ” Drake directed the crowd. “I’m gonna do everything I told him I would do, what I said in the song: keep us afloat till he gets back,” Drake told MTV News last month, shortly after Lil Wayne turned himself in to police. “You won’t even notice he’s gone. Promise.” Have you seen Drake on tour? Share your own concert reviews in the comments! Related Artists Drake Lil Wayne

Drake Joins Justin Bieber Onstage At Juno Awards

MC fills in for Ludacris on ‘Baby,’ in surprise collaboration. By Cristina Ramos Justin Bieber and Drake perform during the 2010 Juno Awards Photo: George Pimentel/ WireImage Although he walked away empty-handed from Canada’s Juno Awards on Sunday, Justin Bieber’s performance of “Baby” stole the show when fellow Canuck Drake took to the stage, joining him in a surprise appearance. “I got some big surprises tonight for you,” Bieber tweeted before the show began — and a big surprise it was. Bieber’s performance was an acoustic rendition of the hit from his recent My World 2.0 LP (currently the #1 album on the Billboard U.S. albums chart), featuring a group of singers and a guitarist, with Drake rapping in place of Ludacris’ original (although Drake does appear in the song’s video ). “Please put away the cameras, we just in the club getting MC-hammered,” Drake rapped. “God forbid I ever trade the wisdom for the glamour / I know I’m just a boy that a woman could make a man of/ So make me one, I know that she could make me one/ I just want a woman that looks 30 when she’s 81/ Please don’t give it all away, I hope that she could save me some/ Justin, why don’t you tell them where your baby’s from?” Although Bieber lost two awards to Michael Bubl

Drake Says He’s On A Remix Of Lil Wayne’s ‘I’m Single’

We got something all the Taylors will be interested in real soon. Now, down to business — we recently brought you clarified word that Lil Wayne appears on Drake’s June 15 LP Thank Me Later via the track “Miss Me.” But there’s more Wayne and Drake in the can. Drizzy sings on a remix of Wayne’s No Ceilings jam “I’m Single.” Drake was so enamored with the record, he wanted to get on the hook. That version is nestled in the Young Money vaults. “I love that song,” Drake told us earlier this week. “I love that song. 40 produced that record for Wayne. I did that a while ago. I love that song. It’s one of those songs I wish was my song. I tried to slither my way on that record. I called Tez like, ‘Tez, let me get on that hook.’ There’s a version with me on it. I don’t know if it’s gonna get out there. Music is someone else’s creation. Once it’s done, it’s hard to say I wanna be a part of it. But me and Wayne, I get excited when Wayne wants to be on one of my songs. Musically we share that. We like doing songs together. I don’t think it’s a bad thing when we do songs together. … So there’s definitely a version with me on it. But that song is amazing on its own.” As for “Miss Me,” Drake said it’s “straightforward.” “It’s a pretty straightforward [song],” Drake said. “It’s a song about being away from what you love and hoping that when you’re gone, doing you, somebody out there misses you. It goes for Wayne in his situation and it goes for me in my situation, ’cause I’m on the road for I don’t how long right now.” The video for the version of “I”m Single” that appears on No Ceilings debuts this Sunday on MTV2’s “Sucker Free Sunday” countdown and on MTV Jams as the Jam of the Week. “The thing with Wayne, if you don’t get a chance to see how hard he worked on the record and the wit and pizazz he had with it, he wants to give you that same feeling the first time you hear it,” said DJ Scoob Doo, who directed the video. “Which he does audio-wise, but him performing it for you in the studio is really what it’s about, as far as this video.” For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines . Drake’s Music ‘Doesn’t Really Call For’ Lil Wayne-Type Energy

‘It’s more about me connecting with the audience,’ MC says about being more laid-back onstage. By Shaheem Reid Drake Photo: Sam Hendrick/ MTV News Drake has thankfully recovered from last year’s knee injury — the 23-year-old Toronto native has been onstage all this week performing as part of his Away From Home Tour . “I had an assessment a week ago,” Drake told MTV News last week. “They told me that I’m definitely able to get out there and perform to the fullest. I’m still not going to be able to play basketball. I’m gonna stay far away from that, actually. But I’m ready to come back. I think I’m coming back with more maturity as far as connecting with the audience and less about running around. A lot of my performance energy before came from watching Lil Wayne. I always felt I needed to be just as energetic, running back and forth on the stage. In preparing for this tour, I realized my brand of music doesn’t really call for that. It’s more about me connecting with the audience and them enjoying the way we flip these songs around. I want them to walk away and be like, ‘That was a great night.’ ” Drizzy has openers Francis and the Lights and K-OS on the road with him. “I chose these acts with Oliver who works with me,” he explained. “They’re on the tour because they’re who I’m a fan of. I know I could have brought out other younger artists or rappers, but I want this to be an experience. I want them to be refreshed about music. Not like, ‘Oh, I went to another rap show.’ ” What do you think of Drake’s live show? Let us know in the comments below! Drake Premieres New Song At Away From Home Tour Kickoff

MC debuts new track ‘Fireworks’ during high-energy set in Pennsylvania. By Shaheem Reid Drake performs in Slippery Rock, PA on Monday night Photo: MTV News SLIPPERY ROCK, Pennsylvania — Backstage at Slippery Rock University, Drake was calm and cool as always, but you could tell that the 23-year-old Canadian superstar was eager to kick off the first night of his Away From Home tour . Since collapsing onstage because of a knee injury last fall, Drake has had to focus more on his album ( Thank Me Later, due out June 15 ) than on live performances. But on Monday night, he showed no signs of rust. With the lights down, the energy all the way turned up, Drake commenced his tour with “Forever.” Backed by a four-piece band and a DJ, Drizzy stepped to the stage and sang, “I want this thing forever, man.” Even though Drake has obviously been concentrating on being a lyrical bulldozer, the Young Money cleanup hitter hasn’t sacrificed his crooning. Drake’s live singing sounds like it does on MP3s, and his bars cut sharp as the fans rapped along. “Faded off the brown,” he spit. “Nino!” They answered, finishing his rhyme. “Unstoppable” came next, and the fans went in extra heavy on the first verse, even drowning Drake out. “Uptown” followed. “I’m so excited to share this moment with you, because it’s really my first show back in six months,” Drake told the crowd, and then turned to the band, saying, “Take me somewhere, please.” “Lust for Life” and “Houstatlantavegas” came in the aftermath. Even at this young stage in his career, Drake’s stage presence seems to indicate that it won’t be long until he graduates from college basketball gyms to the Madison Square Gardens of the world. There’s just a certain connection elite MCs make with their audiences. Of course you have to have those monster radio hits and deeper album cuts (in Drake’s case, mixtape cuts), but some performers make the audience buy into the person, not just the rapper. Drake is there already. He knows when to play up his ferocity, like with “Fear,” where he went with a more conversational style of delivery (especially with the closing verse). Drizzy can also play that shy, unassuming role for the ladies perfectly. He performed his part from “I Invented Sex” and switched around Trey Songz’ lines: “Which one of y’all coming home with Drizzy?” he sang. “Is it you? You sure?” he asked a young lady in the audience. He actually brought a woman onstage to dance with him while the band played Alicia Keys’ “Unthinkable,” but she was so nervous, Drake sent her back in about a minute. Another woman threw her bra at Drake during “A Night Off,” but it didn’t quite make the stage. Drake debuted the much talked about “Fireworks,” which will start off Thank Me Later. The record starts with the sound of fireworks and gives a snapshot of where the two-time Grammy nominee is in his life. “Money just changed everything,” he rapped. “My 15 minutes started an hour ago … / Wayne put me right here … / Something I would die for, October’s very own, but it’s feeling like July 4.” Later, Drake performed his string of collabos such as “Say Something” and “Bedrock,” during which he gave an extra-special tribute to Aaliyah. Lil Wayne was saluted on “Best I Ever Had.” “When I say, ‘Young Money,’ you say, ‘Free Weezy!’ ” he instructed, and the exchange played out for a few minutes. “Free my brother Lil Wayne,” Drake said. “Over” was the closer as Drake encouraged more crowd participation, chanting, “I’m doin’ me, I’m doin’ me,” before he left.
