Harry Reids Dream Act – Cap and Gown Amnesty for Votes

The so-called DREAM Act would create an official path to Democratic voter registration for an estimated two million college-age illegal aliens. Look past the public relations-savvy stories of “undocumented” valedictorians left out in the cold. This is not about protecting “children.” It's about preserving electoral power through cap-and-gown amnesty. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid announced this week that he's attaching the DREAM Act to the defense authorization bill. With ethnic activists breathing down his neck and President Obama pushing to fulfill his campaign promise to Hispanics, Reid wants his queasy colleagues to vote on the legislation next week. Open-borders lawmakers have tried and failed to pass the DREAM Act through regular channels for the past decade. That's because informed voters know giving green cards to illegal alien students undermines the rule of law, creates more illegal immigration incentives and grants preferential treatment to illegal alien students over law-abiding native and naturalized American students struggling to get an education in tough economic times. This bad idea is compounded by a companion proposal to recruit more illegal aliens into the military with the lure of citizenship (a fraud-ridden and reckless practice countenanced under the Bush administration). DREAM Act lobbyists are spotlighting heart-wrenching stories of high-achieving teens brought to this country when they were toddlers. But instead of arguing for case-by-case dispensations, the protesters want blanket pardons. The broadly drafted Senate bill would confer benefits on applicants up to age 35, and the House bill contains no age ceiling at all. The academic achievement requirements are minimal. Moreover, illegal aliens who didn't arrive in the country until they turned 15 — after they laid down significant roots in their home country — would be eligible for DREAM Act benefits and eventual U.S. citizenship. And like past amnesty packages, the Democratic plan is devoid of any concrete eligibility and enforcement mechanisms to deter already-rampant immigration benefit fraud. The DREAM Act sponsors have long fought to sabotage a clearly worded provision in the 1996 Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act (IIRIRA) that states: “Notwithstanding any other provision of law, an alien who is not lawfully present in the United States shall not be eligible on the basis of residence within a State (or a political subdivision) for any postsecondary education benefit unless a citizen or national of the United States is eligible for such a benefit (in no less an amount, duration, and scope) without regard to whether the citizen or national is such a resident.” Ten states defied that federal law and offered DREAM Act-style tuition preference to illegal aliens: California, Illinois, Kansas, Nebraska, New Mexico, New York, Oklahoma, Texas, Utah and Washington. The last time DREAM Act champions tried to tack their scheme onto a larger immigration proposal, they snuck in language that would absolve those 10 states of their law-breaking by repealing the 1996 law retroactively — and also offering the special path to green cards and citizenship for illegal alien students. Despite the obvious electoral advantage this plan would give Democrats, several pro-illegal alien amnesty Republicans crossed the aisle to support the DREAM Act, including double-talking Sens. John McCain, Richard Lugar, Bob Bennett, Sam Brownback, Norm Coleman, Susan Collins, Larry Craig, Chuck Hagel, Kay Bailey Hutchison, Mel Martinez and Olympia Snowe, as well as presidential candidate Mike Huckabee (who champions even greater illegal alien student benefits than those proposed by Democrats). After paying lip service to securing the borders, McCain promised DREAM Act demonstrators this week that he supported the bill and would work to “resolve their issues.” Out-of-touch polls might want to pay attention to the world outside their bubble. A recent Quinnipiac University poll shows that Americans across the political spectrum favor tougher enforcement of existing immigration laws over rolling out the amnesty welcome wagon. When asked, “Do you think immigration reform should primarily move in the direction of integrating illegal immigrants into American society or in the direction of stricter enforcement of laws against illegal immigration?” solid majorities of registered Republicans, Democrats and independents chose stricter enforcement over greater integration of the illegal alien population. Democrats outside the Beltway have grown increasingly averse to signing on to illegal alien incentives — especially as the Obama jobs death toll mounts and economic confidence plummets. Here in Colorado, a handful of Democrats joined Republican lawyers to kill a state-level DREAM Act amid massive higher education budget cuts and a bipartisan voter backlash. Asked why she opposed the illegal alien student bailout, one Democratic lawmaker said quite simply: “I listened to my constituents.” An alien concept in Washington, to be sure. http://www.onenewsnow.com/Perspectives/Default.aspx?id=1170564 added by: ReverandG

T.I., Chris Brown Talk Possible ‘Takers’ Prequel

‘There are definitely whispers around the studio about that,’ Tip tells MTV News of the heist flick. By Shaheem Reid T.I. in “Takers” Photo: Columbia Pictures The advance hype for the action-thriller “Takers” will be answered on Friday when the ensemble-powered picture opens in theaters. But the early reaction from fans during preliminary screenings of the movie this summer has been so positive, that a follow-up is already being discussed among the castmembers and the film studio. And if the Takers do get a green light for another adventure, it looks like it would be a prequel rather than a sequel. “There are definitely whispers around the studio about that,” T.I., a star of and producer on the movie, told MTV News recently in LA. “Some phone calls have been made about that. But ultimately, it depends on what happens on August the 27th.”

MLK Sculptor also Painted Glenn Beck in Manure

A lot of liberals think Glenn Beck is full of, well, manure, but one artist Michael Murphy has taken it further than most. He did a picture of Beck using manure instead of paint. And now, anti-Beck demonstrators have hired Murphy to create a sculpture … honoring Martin Luther King Jr. The Washington Post  reported  Aug. 17 that Murphy will unveil “The People’s Memorial to King” in Washington, D.C., on Aug 28, the anniversary of King’s “I Have a Dream” speech. Conservative television and radio host Glenn Beck is scheduled to host a rally that day at the Lincoln Memorial, where King delivered his speech in 1963. The sculpture unveiling is part of a counter-demonstration called “Celebrate the Dream,” which the Post described as “a grass-roots network of artists, community organizers and social activists.” But the Post’s report ignored an intriguing link between the conservative activist and liberal artist: Murphy’s 2009 portrait of Beck, which used “bull manure” as paint. Politico  reported  on Murphy’s painting in September 2009. On his  website , Murphy described the painting as “bull manure and pigment on canvas.” “Murphy, who specializes in large-scale public art installations, said his vision was to create a sculpture that would convey the ideal of ‘unification and bringing people together,'” the Post said of the King sculpture. “Murphy describes the piece as a ‘directional’ sculpture ‘that has four specific vantage points. … If you were to stray from the ideal point of view, the message gets lost,’ Murphy said.” Like this article? ‘American Idol’ Contestants Want Lady Gaga, Harry Connick Jr. To Judge

Season-nine singers Lee DeWyze, Siobhan Magnus and more chat about their dream “Idol” panel for the show’s upcoming tenth season. By Mawuse Ziegbe, with reporting by James Lascina Lee DeWyze Photo: MTV News The rumor-mill has been churning non-stop about which big-name celebs will step behind the “American Idol” judges’ table for the upcoming tenth season. Jennifer Lopez is reportedly in the running, alongside Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler and country diva Shania Twain. Elton John, Justin Timberlake, Paula Abdul and Usher have also turned up on “Idol” judge wish lists. One group of people that has had firsthand experience with the judges’ feedback is the “American Idol” contestants. On the Los Angeles stop of the “Idol” summer tour on Friday (August 13), the season-nine contenders spoke with MTV News about their dream judging panel. “I think Harry Connick Jr. would be really good because he was amazing [as a mentor] on the show,” said Katie Stevens. “Supposedly Elton John was talked about. I think that would be really cool too. Hey, maybe J.Lo, J.Lo’s cool.” Aaron Kelly is also on Team Connick but said that with “Idol’s” newly-lowered age minimum, contestants and fans could benefit from the perspective of an artist who has scored success early on. “I think a young judge would be a good idea. Taylor Swift or somebody that got started young,” Kelly observed. “There’s a lot of teenage fans that watch the show … so also a young judge would bring in that audience.” Spunky singer Siobhan Magnus suggested the show should incorporate celebs outside of music for the next judges’ panel. “I think the best choice, no question, would be Pee Wee Herman. I’m pushing for it. I’m advocating every chance I get to say it. I think that Pee Wee Herman should be a judge on ‘American Idol,’ ” Magnus declared. She did have some musicians in mind for the gig, who would also make the show a big adventure. “Maybe Ozzy [Osbourne]. Just [because] how fun would that be? Everyone would be like, ‘What did he just say?’ [Or] maybe someone zany like Lady Gaga who’s huge now and just so creative.” Other season-nine contestants are feeling the idea of bringing a little comedy to the competition. In addition to suggesting his fellow “Idol” contender Michael Lynche and ’90s hip-hop duo Kid ‘N Play, Andrew Garcia rattled off names like Carrot Top and Tony Danza as stars he would put on his dream judges’ table. “[Tony Danza is] a cool guy and it’d be cool to have him on the show,” Garcia reasoned. Lee DeWyze also mentioned Danza and threw in Twisted Sister’s Dee Snider as potential celebs on his ideal panel, but admitted that he didn’t wasn’t married to a particular lineup. “I don’t know. I’m just throwing random names [out there],” the “Idol” champ shrugged. “But who knows, it could be anybody.” Lynche said he would keep a connection to the original judges’ table but also switch it up with some fresh faces. “You gotta keep the dawg [Randy Jackson] because [he’s] so classic. I thought J. Lo was a good pick. I heard that she was rumored to be one of the people up for it,” Lynche said. The singer also suggested that he has the chops to dole out feedback to “Idol” hopefuls. “Why not just pick me for the last one?” he said. “Put Big Mike up there.” Casey James said he would keep the final decisions about who moves on each week to the fans. “Three random people from the crowd that were clapping really loud for me,” is who James said he would snag as judges. Didi Benami said celebs such as Bret Michaels, Tyler, Twain and Lopez would make good judges but also mentioned that star power isn’t the most important thing when it comes to picking “Idol” critics. “I don’t really have a dream panel,” said Benami. “I just want them to be good and help with the contestants.” Who would be on your dream “American Idol” judging panel? Katy Perry’s ‘Teenage Dream’ Video: Fall In Love All Over Again

Romantic clip for title track of pop star’s forthcoming album co-stars actor Josh Kloss. By James Montgomery Josh Kloss and Katy Perry in the “Teenage Dream” music video Photo: Eric Ford/Danny Mayer/ On Location News You’ve got to hand it to Katy Perry : she’s really hitting on all cylinders these days. “California Gurls,” the first single from her album Teenage Dream , was the official anthem of the first half of summer, a fun and flirty song that probably served as the soundtrack to your various beachfront flings. And now, she’s back with the album’s title track — and second single — which will undoubtedly serve as the soundtrack to one of those flings blossoming. She’s got you covered every step of the way … it’s sorta brilliant, really. Both “Teenage Dream” and its accompanying video are about falling madly in love, about losing your inhibitions and getting jelly-kneed by the mere thought of being near that certain someone. Sure, you may have snogged your fair share of guys or gals down the shore this summer (that’s what “California Gurls” was for), but now you’ve found the one that makes you feel all giddy inside, and you’re ready to let your guard down and go head-over-heels. “Dream” is all those gooey feelings turned into a pop song. The video was directed by Yoann Lemoine, who fills it with gauzy, sunset-tinged scenery: a beach in the waning light, the rapidly darkening hills of California, the incandescent glow of a pool in the early evening. Much like the song itself, the entire clip feels like a wooshing, love-drunk dream. Perry frolics with a frequently shirtless hunk (actor Josh Kloss) and is giddy throughout. She brings her friends (including L.A. socialites Ana Calderon and DJ Skeet Skeet) along to share in the merriment, and they throw impromptu dance parties all over Southern California. It all possesses an unwound, unabashed glee — the kind of bliss that only comes when you first fall in love, when everything seems to be taken from a movie (or, in this case, an Abercrombie & Fitch billboard) and nothing seems impossible. In that regard, it fits the feel of the song perfectly. Perry always stays on message. There is no deviation. It’s ingenious, not to mention a little frightening. Welcome to your favorite song of the second half of 2010, the one you’ll fall in love with (and to). You are powerless to resist. What do you think of Katy Perry’s “Teenage Dream”? Friends rally to get deported student back home in the states

Written by Johnathan Silver, The Shorthorn Saad Nabeel could be back home by February 2011, if friends and friends of friends have something to say about it. Nabeel, a former UTA electrical engineering student, was deported to his home country of Bangladesh November 2009. His friends and supporters congregated on campus Friday to come up with a plan for his return to the states. Now, they’re eying U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder to remove a 10-year ban Nabeel has from the U.S. His family lived in the United States illegally after petitions to stay failed, even though they entered the country with the government’s knowledge more than 15 years ago. When deported, the family’s green cards were in the process of being delivered. Nabeel and his mother pursued political asylum in Canada last year, but following misunderstandings, they were subjected to interrogations and eventually separated and imprisoned. Many people became aware of Nabeel’s story through national and international media. The stories may not have come to light though, if it weren’t for the existence of a Facebook page dedicated to getting Nabeel home. But don’t call the group of people a group, said organizer and UTA political science senior Priscylla Bento. Putting a name on these “individuals” would implement unnecessary protocol that groups endure, she said. “We’re just individuals, with different opinions, coming together to help Saad,” she said. Toward the end of the meeting, attendees contacted Nabeel via text message, and asked him to log on to Skype. Once he was online, meeting attendees asked Nabeel questions concerning his health. He said at first he was sick, but now he’s fine. His only challenge, he said, is dealing with not being able to leave his home since he’s unaccustomed to the foreign culture of his homeland. Beside Nabeel himself, Shawna McNary, a former classmate of Nabeel, has much institutional knowledge of Nabeel’s case. She said Nabeel is American at heart. “His favorite singer is Taylor Swift,” she said. “That says it all.” McNary, who jumped on board Nabeel’s case in the early stages, thought it was unfair for Nabeel to be put in the situation he’s in. Most people don’t think everything in their life could change one day, she said. But that will change soon, she said. “I want them to think your name when they go to sleep,” McNary told Nabeel. While the students are focusing on the U.S. Department of Justice, Nabeel’s immigration adviser Ralph Isenberg is linking Nabeel to the controversial DREAM Act. The DREAM Act is a piece of legislation under review by Congress that would create a path to legal residency for undocumented students. The amendment Isenberg suggested to senior members of the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee, would grant the same path to students who were deported three years prior to the signing of the act. Isenberg said he considered helping Nabeel tackle the 10-year ban, but thought it just would be lost in the court system. “Is there anything that could work that could get this kid here earlier,” he said. “That’s when I thought about the DREAM Act.” Isenberg said Nabeel meets the other requirements for the benefits of the DREAM Act, but the amendment, which he’s considering having named “The Saad Amendment,” would serve Nabeel well. “I thought 'this guy [Nabeel] is a shoo-in,'” he said. “But it’s not just for Saad.” http://www.theshorthorn.com/content/view/19868/265/ added by: Jdharden
