During ‘MTV First’ premiere of ‘Wide Awake,’ Katy talks about upcoming documentary, which shows her at her most unpolished. By James Montgomery, with reporting by Sway Calloway Katy Perry Photo: Katy Perry may have closed the book on Teenage Dream with her new “Wide Awake” video , but next month, she’ll wrap that book up (and put a tidy little bow on top) with “Part of Me,” the 3-D documentary that not only captures her meteoric 2011, but her unheralded early days as well. “The movie is all of last year; I had these two guys from London come out [to film], and I said, ‘Will you just capture everything that goes on?’ ” Perry told MTV News’ Sway Calloway during the “MTV First” premiere of the “Wide Awake” video. “Because I felt 2011 would be an important year for me; you could feel it, like tremors of an earthquake. I didn’t know what I was going to catch, but I was going on this extreme tour, playing venues I never dreamed I’d play … I was either going to go bankrupt, have a breakdown or have the greatest success of my life; and I’m sure I did a lot of those things. But we caught all of it and put it together in a film.” Perry wrote “Wide Awake” specifically for the film — the video ends with her triumphantly ascending to the stage during her California Dreams Tour — so it’s little wonder that the clip also features plenty of nods to her past . “Part of Me” also tells the story of how she rose from an unknown to one of the biggest pop stars on the planet, and watching it now, Katy can’t help but be amazed at how eerily prescient she was in her younger days. “There’s some backstory of how I got here, because a lot of people have heard about where I come from, but there’s actual footage … the movie, when it opens up, it’s me at 18 talking about how I want all these things, like, all the things I have now and achieving my dreams,” she said. “But then I’m kind of biting my lip going, ‘But then there’s all this responsibility.’ And then it cuts to me at the arena with thousands of people, essentially being a boss of sorts, a CEO, having to give out orders; it’s pretty crazy.” And unlike many other high-profile docs, this one is delightfully unpolished. There are moments where Perry appears unguarded and unfiltered — which, to her, is one of the most important aspects of the film. It not only documents her rise to fame, but her acceptance of herself too. It’s called “Part of Me” for a reason, after all. “There’s some scenes that I know people will screenshot and be like, ‘Oh, she looks like a fat cow with zits.’ But I put those in there because that’s a part of me, that’s reality, and I’m OK with that now,” she explained. “It’s been a process of learning it’s OK, and I’m accepting of my own skin, but I think it’s important for young kids to see that you don’t have to be perfect in order to achieve your dreams, because I think that the world has this strange, skewed perception of successful people, that they’re just so perfectly made up, and they have all these possessions that make them who they are, and that’s not at all how I got here; I came from nothing, I didn’t have anything. “I just had a dream, and I worked very hard at achieving that dream,” she continued. “And that’s exactly what it takes; it takes a lot of hard work, a lot of sacrifice, a lot of focus, and hopefully that will open the door for you. Hey guys, I’m a Swedish girl whose dreams came true at May 30th 2012. First of all, I’m not gonna start with saying, “I never thought I’d write this” because I did. I believed, I believed in my dreams, just like Justin taught us. As you might know, Justin has never been to my country. When I heard he was coming to Norway , I decided to go, and nothing could stop me this time. It was a tough thing to do, cause first of all it’s quite hard to convince a mother to let her 14 year old daughter go alone to another country . I think I made around 10 different plans, and there was around 10 people who should’ve gone with me. But they all gave up when things got hard. But I didn’t, so in the end I was the only one still believing. I fought for it, worked hard to get the money and I swear I did everything, and it payed off. So I went, I was the happiest – but most shocked girl in the world. I just couldn’t realize it was real life. On May 29th, I started my long journey to Oslo. 1000 kilometers, 12 hours by train , but still I couldn’t catch more than an hour sleep. I kept that smile cause I was aware of that my dreams might come true this day. At 7:00 am, I arrived in Oslo and I went straight to his hotel. It was an amazing atmosphere, us beliebers had so much fun, and whenever we saw a shadow in a window, we screamed our lungs off. Justin didn’t show up, but we got to see Kenny waving and smiling from the balcony, and I couldn’t believe that. Kenny is like my God. We kept on screaming, “JUSTIN BIEBER SHOW YOUR FACE!” and a lot of other stuff, and we sang his songs so loud. Heaps of police and securities started showing up but we were all doing fine and had the time of our lives, I can’t believe why everyone got so worried. At this time, we started singing Happy Birthday for Jazzy, and that’s when Justin walked out on the balcony, waved, went in to get his iPad to film us. My heart stopped and the tears started flooding. We did it. Even though I had promised myself to see him, I got so shocked and couldn’t believe this was really happening. I mean, I’m in JUSTIN DREW BIEBER’S iPAD. For not making this story too long, I also saw White Kenny, Scooter, Ryan Good and Alison Kaye, in different places in Oslo. I love them all so much and they made my dreams come true. In the evening, I was so excited and ready for Justin’s free concert. I was just going to go there and then the police showed up, saying, “You cannot go in there if you don’t have a wristband” and it felt like someone dropped a huge stone on me. What the? What wristbands? Then they said that you had to win them and they gave them out earlier. I was at lunch at that time they gave them out, which kind of made me hate myself. I said, “But I didn’t know..” and the police answered, “Well that sucks for you” and I couldn’t believe that. I tried to pick myself up and myself and some other beliebers went to the fence, we decided to sit there during the concert. We were going to see him, no matter what. I obviously started bawling when he started singing, with that huge smile on his face. Even though I had the worst seats, this was the best moment of my life. This was the best day in my life, thanks to Justin and the incredible crew. And thanks to that, I didn’t give up. So please, people, please don’t give up when things get hard. *wipes tears* Newlywed Woman Loses Husband To Cancer After Only 6 Weeks A woman married the man of her dreams and her best friend since college, only to have him die just six weeks after she walked down the aisle. Bethany Schmidt met future husband, Ryan Smith, when they were both students at the University of Oregon in 2005, and after graduation they moved into a small one-bedroom apartment in Eugene, where she got a job in graphic design and he worked in finance. The smitten girlfriend said Ryan “knew he had it in the bag” from the beginning, and the young couple decided they would get married two years down the road. Sadly time was not on their side, and “in January 2011, Ryan was diagnosed with a very rare form of cancer & began treatment immediately. We stuck together,” Bethany, now 25, wrote on the website that she made as a tribute to her lost love BethanyRyanSmith.com. Smith was suffering from a rare and aggressive form of testicular cancer that was unaffected by chemotherapy and had developed a large tumor in his colon. Despite the devastating blow, the couple was determined not to put their dreams on hold and on July 1 while on a weekend trip to visit Bethany’s parents in Bend, Ryan dropped down to one knee and asked her to marry him. “I dropped to both knees and said yes,” she said. That’s when isht got real, REAL fast… In November, Ryan’s doctors decided enough was enough. “After three different intensive chemotherapies, a major surgery at USC in LA, lots of doctors, and too many nights in the hospital, Ryan’s treatment was discontinued. We were told there wasn’t anything else we could do and his prognosis was about six months,” she said. The only thing left to do was to tie the knot and make their relationship official, so they set their wedding date for two months away, but when the groom’s health took a turn for the worse and his organs began shutting down, they were forced to speed up the process. “With three days notice and the incredible help of friends, family, and some dear angels we were able to do the thing we wanted to most: We got married. We held a small ceremony on December 11th in Bend, Oregon,” wrote Bethany. Tragically, the end was not far away, and on January 18 Ryan, 24, was admitted to the hospital with symptoms they could not control at home. “I stayed next him in his hospital bed until he passed in the early hours of January 24th,” revealed his grieving widow, who calls her late husband: “the most wonderful person I have ever known.” Condolences to Bethany and the family and friends of Ryan Smith. On the 23rd of April our dreams came TRUE as Justin arrived in London! The day began at 4:30am where me, Emily and my friend Lindi got ready and tubed into the central London. While at the ITV Studios we met two guys @harrycooke & @lozzypurry, who without, meeting Justin would not of been possible. They suggested we go to Heathrow Airport to wait for Justin’s flight to land, and it was the best decision we could of made. At 10 am, we waited at terminal 5 for Justin, alongside a huge crowd of beliebers. The next few hours were the most tense but exciting hours of our lives! Jeremy exited through the terminal and our hearts raced and our iPhones shook with adrenaline as we were one step closer to meeting Justin. But he was not on the same flight as Jeremy. When I saw Jeremy, my instant reaction was to run to him, even though I felt bad for asking for a photo after his flight. But I knew it was a one in a lifetime chance, so I did, and he was kind enough to allow it even though he was in a rush. The photo was shaken due to my shaking hands from being near him, but I knew then that even if I didn’t get to meet Justin I would of had an amazing experience. We were confused and contemplated heading into the city centre as rumors circulated that Justin had exited through the Windsor suite. But there was something strange about it all and something in us told us to stay and wait for the next flight in from LAX. Then our dream became a reality. As soon as I heard fans screaming I knew the wait was worth it all. I ran under the terminal barrier and luckily got straight behind Justin. I could not believe what was happening. I was shaking and couldn’t help but scream as I was touching Justin, trying so hard to get his attention. Finally he caught my attention and we had a photo and when I looked at it, I could not process what my eyes were seeing. A photo. Of Justin and myself. In my hands. Security and paparazzi made getting close to him so difficult but I had done it. I was standing next to the most flawless, gorgeous person in the world. I had my Twitter account written down on paper that I wanted him to take. Scooter and security needed to escort him to his car so everyone was rushing to get to him before he left, but I got close to him again and gave him that piece of paper, the piece of paper which the paparazzi took a photo of him holding and I was completely love struck . I was one of the luckiest girls in that crowd, I stood right behind him all of the way to his car and my hands were on his shoulders. He was so lovely to everyone, and ever since I met Justin I haven’t stopped thinking about him. His smile in our photo is beautiful! When he got in the car I stood back and tried to fit together what had just happened. I had just met Justin Bieber. And all my emotions came flooding at once, I cried with happiness like I had never done before, I was in shock. Everyone swarmed to the front Justin yet we were lucky enough to be able to round the back of him. Everyone was going crazy, shoving and pushing. All I remember hearing was Justin continuously saying how he wanted to see us all and have photos with us all one at a time. He was so amazing and sweet even after his 10-hour flight , I was in awe of his kindness. I made sure to remain calm the whole time and not to push or shove, and because of this the security helped hold others back while I was able to go in and get a photo. I remember having my hand on Justin’s hand as I was trying to get my photo and just thinking “OMG HIS HAND IS SO SOFT! WHY IS HIS SKIN SO SOFT!” It was just AMAZING!!! It was the best experience of my life! It was more than I could ever expect! We were determined to catch a glimpse of Justin again so caught the tube to his hotel. That tube journey was surreal. We both sat there for 40 or so minutes unable to stop smiling. At his hotel, we waited in the rain for Justin to come outside, but missed him by minutes. Then we heard of the secret location, thanks to Harry and Loz. We jumped in a taxi and headed to the supper club where Justin and his team were. Even though we didn’t see Justin again, we were happy to be in the amazing atmosphere with all the other beliebers, there to support Justin. Lindi however managed to catch Scooter before he entered his car. I saw Kenny and Alfredo walking out and noticed Kenny talking and hugging people so I left my spot and ran to him alone. Although I was unable to talk to him or Alfredo, I did manage to catch Scooter before he got into his car. I asked for a photo and he was more than happy to have one. I was so happy words cannot describe. After taking the photo, Scooter asked me why I was shaking, and the only response I could come up with was “ajdhfjkidsba cause like ahdjjfjfhshbb”. Slightly embarrassing, but I didn’t know what to say, SCOOTER BRAUN WAS TALKING TO ME. Really was the icing on the cake. That day couldn’t of been more incredible! I love Justin and his crew so much! Nothing will ever change that. Thank you so so much Justin, we were only able to travel to London for the one day, and the realization that we both got to meet you has made us the happiest girls alive. On March 11th, 2012 at around 6 pm, my dreams came true. My name is Laynie. I was staying at a hotel on vacation in Florida. I had absolutely no idea Justin Bieber was there. I was about to go downstairs to go get some dinner. My parents and I got in the elevator and were fooling around, just joking and stuff. We get out of the elevator and I hear some sort of singing. We go through the double doors and there he was . He was walking with Selena and a bodyguard in the opposite direction. I couldn’t process it. I didn’t know what was happening. McGuire, who is receiving treatment for a relapse of the leukemia he was diagnosed with five years ago, is getting dating assistance from his big sister, Tori, who decided to try to lift his spirits after he fretted that he might not be able to get a date once his hair fell out from chemotherapy treatments. “I said, ‘What if I got Taylor Swift to go to the prom with you?’ ” she said she asked her brother. “His eyes lit up for the first time since he was diagnosed.” As a bonus, the prom falls on Kevin’s birthday. So Tori set up the “Taylor Swift Take Kevin McGuire to Prom!” Facebook site , which as of Friday (February 24) morning had more than 77,000 followers. “All throughout Kevin’s treatment he kept his character intact, remained playing basketball, and even started varsity football as a freshman,” she wrote on the Facebook page. “Kevin is known throughout the community as the High school’s ‘real life SUPER MAN!’ Tragically, Kevin had a relapse, and is now fighting cancer for the second time.
