Debi Nova Explains ‘Coming To America’ Moment On ‘When I Was 17’

Costa Rica native was overwhelmed by the sheer number of toilet-paper varieties. By MTV News staff Debi Nova Photo: MTV News Since “When I Was 17” premiered in May, we’ve heard celebrity stories of teenage heartbreak and hilarity, triumph and defeat, and OK, a whole lot of foolishness. Drake shared memories of his days rocking what he called a “terrible afro,” Queen Latifah recalled the day she landed her first record deal, and Bret Michaels shared intimate details about the night he lost his virginity. This Saturday’s episode brings us a tale of hope for the future — and a bit of terror at the present. When “Drummer Boy” singer Debi Nova was 17, she emigrated from Costa Rica to Los Angeles. What she found in La La Land was enormously enticing and more than a little overwhelming. “There was a very specific story that marked my coming-to-America moment,” she explains. The event took place almost as soon as her plane had touched down in California and she set out to get some household supplies. “Very first week I get here, I go into the supermarket because I need some toilet paper,” she said. “I go in the toilet-paper aisle and I’m like, ‘OK, unscented, aloe vera, recycled, non-recycled, double-ply, triple-ply, four rolls, eight rolls, 12 rolls, 32 rolls. What do you want?’ ” Tune into Saturday’s show to hear more about Nova’s first year in America, including the embarrassing time she failed her driver’s license test. New York Yankees ace CC Sabathia , who already stood 6-foot-6 before he’d even hit his 18th birthday, and Ciara, who found out what it was like to be cheated on at the tender age of 17, are also featured in the new episode. “When I Was 17” — this week featuring Debi Nova, CC Sabathia and Ciara — airs Saturday at 11 a.m. on MTV. Killer of Five Children Executed in Ohio; AP Story Allows Half-Truths and Untruths to Live On

In October 2007, I put up a BizzyBlog post (also cross-posted at the Cleveland Plain Dealer’s short-lived Wide Open Blog ) about William Garner (pictured at right), the Ohio man who killed five children (three of them and the lone survivor also pictured at right) to cover up a burglary in 1992. At the time, it appeared that Garner’s date with the executioner had been indefinitely called off, for specious Miranda-related reasons that you have to read to believe (and even then, it will be difficult). On Tuesday, Garner’s attempts to avoid his death sentence ultimately failed. Sadly, the Associated Press’s unbylined coverage of  his execution by lethal injection Tuesday allowed Garner and his lawyers to put forth one final batch of half-truths and untruths that require refutation (bolds and numbered tags are mine): An Ohio man said he was “heartily sorry” for his carelessness (1) before he was executed Tuesday for the murders of five children in a 1992 Cincinnati apartment fire he set in an attempt to destroy evidence of a burglary. William Garner, 37, died at 10:38 a.m. at the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility, 18 minutes after the lethal injection began. As he lay on the execution table, Garner held a dreadlock of hair from a female friend and read a mostly inaudible lengthy final statement from notebook paper held by the execution team leader. He thanked several people as well as the state of Ohio. “I’m heartily sorry,” he said. “God bless everyone who has been robbed in this procedure. I thought I’d never be free, but I’m free now.” Garner was sentenced to death for the Jan. 26, 1992, pre-dawn deaths of the children in the apartment of Addie Mack, who was in the emergency room of a nearby hospital. Garner had stolen keys from her purse while she received care and took a cab to the apartment to steal a television, radio, VCR and telephone. Four girls and two boys, ages 8 to 13, were at the apartment alone, and Garner knew they were there when he threw a lit match onto a couch. Garner has admitted setting the fire but said he thought the children would escape (2). Only one, 13-year-old Rod Mack, made it out alive. … Because so many people wanted to witness the execution on behalf of the young victims, the prison opened a second viewing room, prisons spokeswoman Julie Walburn said. Six witnesses for the victims and Garner’s niece and legal team were accommodated in the witness room facing the execution chamber, and another three victims’ witnesses watched on closed-circuit TV in the spillover room, she said. … Garner had said a secondary motivation for setting the fire was to draw attention to the children’s squalid living conditions (3). He told police that he had noticed the bedroom “full of girls” and that one of them had asked him for water, which he provided, according to a report by the Ohio Parole Board. He also said he had been in another bedroom where the two boys slept. His lawyers had argued that the death sentences be set aside because Garner had developmental disabilities, a limited IQ and a violent, abusive upbringing (4) that caused him to function on the level of a 14-year-old at the time of the deaths. How is this AP story incomplete and wrong? Let’s count the ways. But first, brace yourself for the horror that follows. A Cincinnati Enquirer report that is no longer available but is excerpted at the October 2007 BizzyBlog post shows that Garner was a cold-blooded, calculating burglar who did everything he could not to leave any tracks, even if it meant killing six children who were sleeping (as noted earlier, one got out alive): Hours before the fire, Garner slipped into University Hospital, looking for an easy mark. There, he found (apartment unit residents Marshandra) Jackson and Addie Mack, who had fallen and hurt her wrist. Garner snatched up Mack’s purse when she wasn’t looking, stealing money and her apartment keys. He took a taxi to the English Woods apartment, telling the driver to wait while he retrieved his belongings. He carted out electronic equipment, at one point waking up one of the children. Garner spun a tale about her mother sending him to check everyone and sent her back to bed with a glass of water. Before leaving, Garner set three fires in the apartment. Then, he grabbed the phone and smoke detectors and left … Now let’s get to the bolded and tagged items in the AP excerpt. (1) – “Carelessness”? The Enquirer excerpt, which originates in Garner’s original police questioning and confession, thoroughly discredits that risible claim. (2) – He “thought the children would escape”? He set three fires, plural (i.e., earth to AP, he did a lot more than throw “a lit match on a couch”). He removed the landline phone and the smoke detectors. How were these children supposed to call for help? How were they going to escape if they weren’t going to wake up until the flames were already out of control? (3) – He wanted “to draw attention to the children’s squalid living conditions”? Mr. Garner had a sick way of demonstrating his concern. The original Enquirer article gave no indication that Mr. Garner had such “noble” thoughts, and I daresay you won’t find any such thoughts expressed in police or legal documents relating to the original arrest and trial. (4) He had “developmental disabilities, a limited IQ and a violent, abusive upbringing”? Gee, he was clever enough to sneak in and out of a hospital; patient enough to wait for the right moment to snatch a purse; cool-headed enough to keep one of his victims calm, giving her a drink of water before sending her back to bed; and sufficiently forward-thinking to disconnect the children’s two best defenses against getting burned alive. Nobody had the slightest reason to believe that Garner was disabled or mentally challenged in 1992 when he was arrested and confessed, or when he was tried and convicted. There’s plenty of reason to believe that his lawyers’ contention while Garner was on Death Row was a fundamentally dishonest, after-the-fact concoction with no basis in fact whose only purpose was to prevent the state from carrying out its sentence. The AP’s weak coverage of Garner’s heinous crime is perhaps instructive to all who read future establishment press dispatches concerning death-penalty executions. The lesson is that the true story and full circumstances of what the killer did may be much worse than what the press chooses to tell readers on Execution Day. Cross-posted at BizzyBlog.com .

Illegals rob elderly citizen, citizens fires gun, prosecutors charge the citizen–and not the illegals

This is a CLASSIC example of how, in cities like Denver where the politicians have promoted sanctuary city policies, illegal aliens are given more rights than citizens. There is a local news video on the page below: http://www.kdvr.com/news/kdvr-elderly-man-shoots-thieves-txt,0,1105363.story *** Elderly man facing serious charges for shooting at thieves Julie Hayden Investigative Reporter 7:22 PM MDT, July 7, 2010 WHEAT RIDGE, Colo. – Legal analyst Dan Recht said he believes the Jefferson County District Attorney is “seriously overcharging” a Wheat Ridge homeowner, accused of attempted first degree murder for shooting at two thieves. 82-year-old Robert Wallace said he fired two shots at two men when they tried to run him over while stealing his flatbed trailer. Wallace now faces twelve felony counts, including four counts of attempted first degree murder, for what he described as an act of defending his property and his life. If convicted, he could spend the rest of his life in prison. One of the thieves, Damacio Torres later admitted to the theft. He and his partner in crime, Alvara Cardano both have prior arrest records and are believed to be in the country illegally. But they are not facing any charges. Recht said, in his experience, prosecutors overcharge cases to force a person to plea bargain. He argued that it's just not right to put a person through that kind of mental and financial stress. Jefferson County DA, Scott Storey, indicated he'll take a closer look at his office's decision to throw the book at the homeowner and hinted the charges could be reduced. He said the investigation continues into the confessed thieves. *** There are additional details you need to know: 1) the two illegal aliens had many prior arrests for theft. At one point recently they stole a $60,000 piece of farm equipment on a trailer in a very similar theft. 2) investigators said they believe the two criminals are part of a car theft ring, and wanted the trailer for additional thefts. 3) the driver of the truck was hit by a bullet and is now paralized, and wants to sue the elderly man “for everything he has” 4) First Degree Murder is a capital punishment offense, so this 82 year old gentleman could go to jail for the rest of his life or even receive the death penalty for defending his life and property. http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20070817192825AAdnJoq 5) In interviews on Denver radio programs, local defense lawyers, former prosecutors and former Congressmen in colorado have stated that had the “victims” been anything other than illegal immigrants, Mr Wallace would not be charged at all. 6) the prosecuting attorneys have pressed NO CHARGES against the illegal immigrant theives. Lohan is placed on 36 months’ probation and required to complete an 18-month alcohol-education program and pay hundreds of dollars in fines. She also is to finish a three-day county coroner program that required her to visit a morgue and talk to victims of drunken drivers. “It is clear to me that my life has become completely unmanageable because I am addicted to alcohol and drugs,” Lohan writes in a statement released to MTV News. October 5, 2007 : Lohan leaves a two-month rehab stint at the Cirque Lodge Treatment Center in Utah. She is also seen with her estranged father, Michael, who was carrying her suitcases. Out of the Rough: DNA Test Proves Tiger Woods NOT Devon James’ Baby Daddy!

Tiger Woods may have stuck his driver in one too many open bags (if you know what we mean!) – but new evidence proves these extra practice rounds did NOT lead to the one result for which a golfer can never take a mulligan: A baby. Over the last couple weeks, Devon James – mistress number… who the heck knows at this point?!? – has claimed to anyone with a microphone that Tiger is the father of her nine-year old son. She stuck by this statement even after sources confirmed the existence of a DNA test that disproved Woods’ paternity. Now, that test has actually been made public. Giving credit to Kikster.com for breaking the news, TMZ has in its possession documents that say Devon was made aware in 2002 that her son is the child of some dude named Pele Watkins. If there was ever a reason for a fist pump… In fact, according to science, there’s a .001% chance that anyone other than Watkins is the dad. So you can breathe a major sigh of relief, Tiger. To understand how low those odds are, consider: they are the same as Elin ever taking you back.

Our How-To Guide: Is Your Favorite Driver Is Good Or Not?

Casey Mears is out at Red Bull and, at least for New Hampshire, Reed Sorenson is in. Is that an upgrade? We weren’t quite sure how to quantify if Sorenson is “good” or not. Megan Fox Talks Playing A Prostitute In ‘Jonah Hex’

‘It’s a western and there were not really a lot of things that women did back then,’ Fox explains. By Kara Warner, with reporting by Joshua Horowitz Megan Fox Photo: Bill Sloyer/ MTV News From Audrey Hepburn in “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” to Jodie Foster in “Taxi Driver” and Julia Roberts in “Pretty Woman,” in Hollywood, playing a prostitute can seem like a rite of passage for many actresses. Screen vixen Megan Fox will join the ranks of A-listers cast as paid temptresses when “Jonah Hex” opens on Friday. Fox plays gun-toting, no-nonsense prostitute Lila in the Warner Bros. comic book adaptation. When MTV News caught up with the star, she suggested that all actors should at some point take on the role of lady of the night. (Actually, she even recommended it to our own Josh Horowitz, but added he might first consider shaving what she called his “Jaws” beard.) “Everyone should do it at least once,” said Fox, who endured her share of discomfort while filming in her character’s tight-fitting vintage corset. Fox explained that Lila’s occupation was reflective of the period in which “Jonah Hex” is set, a time when women were often forced into prostitution because of a dearth of alternative work options. “[The film] is not a spaghetti western but it’s a western and there were not really a lot of things that women did back then,” the 24-year-old told MTV News. “They did the child-rearing and as vocation or occupation — and unfortunately it was hard times — they were prostitutes. That’s just the reality of the time period.” What do you think of Megan taking on the gun-slinging role? Tell us in the comments! USA Today’s Request Ted Kennedy-Related FBI Documents Ends with Surprising Lack of Chappaquiddick Papers

USA Today released the results of its Freedom of Information Act requests for FBI documents related to Ted Kennedy. John Fritze’s story leans heavily on the sympathetic “barrage of threats” angle to begin his story, and downplayed the lack of documents on the death at Chappaquiddick. Fritze began:  Sen. Edward Kennedy, who buried two brothers killed by assassins, endured a barrage of threats on his life that continued for much of his political career, thousands of FBI documents released Monday show. More than 2,200 pages of previously secret documents reveal Kennedy, the brother of President John F. Kennedy, received a constant stream of anonymous threats and warnings from members of the Ku Klux Klan and the militant anti-communist “Minutemen.” Fritze arrived at Chappaquiddick late in the article, and hinted without outrage that the Kennedy family may have removed a pile of documents that might have tainted the Ted Kennedy image:  “There might be a lead here or there,” said David Kaiser, a professor at the U.S. Naval War College who has written on the Kennedys. But Kaiser said he is “surprised by what wasn’t there,” including correspondence between the White House and the FBI over Chappaquiddick. The Kennedy family was given a chance to review the documents before they were released. Rep. Patrick Kennedy, D-R.I., and family representatives did not respond to requests for comment. So much for “Freedom of Information.” Remember this one the next time leftists start complaining about George W. Bush being tight with presidential records. Fritze reported that documents show Nixon aide John Dean was asking the FBI to determine if Mary Jo Kopechne, who died in the car Ted Kennedy drove off of Dyke Bridge in 1969, had visited Greece in 1968. Bryan Bender of the Boston Globe suggests the Nixon team was trying to see if Kopechne accompanied the Senator on a Greek vacation.  The Washington Post story by Jerry Markon reported that former Kennedy adviser Bob Shrum said Ted Kennedy delayed running for president until 1980 because of the threats, and somehow not because the threat of Chappaquiddick would also be hanging over his campaign:  Kennedy waited 12 years after Robert was assassinated before running for president, largely because of his family’s concerns about such threats, according to a longtime aide, Robert Shrum. “You took precautions,” said Shrum, Kennedy’s speechwriter during his 1980 presidential campaign. “We had a doctor with us everywhere we went. We had ambulances in most places. The memory was there. But you just lived with it.” Markon’s story ended by relaying only 77 of the 2,200 pages of Ted Kennedy documents were on Chappaquiddick: The files include 77 pages on the drowning of Mary Jo Kopechne when Kennedy drove his car off a bridge on Chappaquiddick Island off Martha’s Vineyard in 1969. The pages are nearly all newspaper articles, but one internal FBI document informed Hoover of the accident and says the police chief in Edgartown, Mass., “confidentially” advised that Kennedy was the driver. “Stated fact Senator Kennedy was driver is not being revealed to anyone,” the document said.

One Dead, More Than 100 Arrested At Bonnaroo

29-year-old David Sloan appeared to die from heat exhaustion. By Gil Kaufman Fans at Bonnaroo on Sunday Photo: Jeff Gentner/ Getty Images A 29-year-old man, North Carolina’s David Sloan, died on Sunday (June 13) after falling ill at the Bonnaroo festival in Manchester, Tennessee. According to the Tullahoma News and Guardian , officials believe that Sloan was overcome by heat , which caused him to collapse early Sunday morning in front of medical personnel after his core body temperature reached 108 degrees. Sloane was rushed to an area hospital, where he later died. The Tennessean reported that, with temperatures in the low to mid-90s and a heat index over 100 degrees for much of the weekend, air-conditioned medical tents were treating about 25 percent more concertgoers than in years past. As of noon on Saturday, more than two dozen fans had been transported to area hospitals for heat-related emergencies or other injuries that couldn’t be treated on site. The festival, which featured sets from Jay-Z, the Dave Matthews Band, Stevie Wonder, Conan O’Brien, the Flaming Lips, Kings of Leon, Weezer and Kid Cudi — who jetted to the site just hours after his arrest for criminal mischief and possession of a controlled substance — also saw a fairly typical number of arrests. More than 50 people were arrested for drug-related charges and disorderly behavior, with local officials expecting the total citations to reach more than 200 by the end of the festival’s ninth year. Among the arrests, according to WBIR News, was a sting on wanted felon Sytanya Darren Fells , who was arrested for possession of “synthetic marijuana” during a traffic stop Friday night. Fells was in a camper traveling on on one of the congested highways into the festival when police pulled the vehicle over and found the driver, Larry Thurber, in possession of 38 Xanax pills and “Mojo,” a synthetic herbal incense that mimics the effects of pot. WSB reported that the local sheriff’s office had begun a crackdown on drugs in the days leading up to the event’s Thursday kickoff, issuing more than 100 citations for offenses ranging from possession of marijuana to underage possession of alcohol along the I-75 corridor leading to Manchester. More than 70 Bonnaroo-bound drivers were arrested before the music even started. Related Photos Performances At Bonnaroo 2010
