Engineering the climate

“Giant engineering schemes to reflect sunlight or suck carbon dioxide from the air could be the only way to save the Earth from runaway global warming, according to a group of leading scientists. But they say that these schemes could have their own catastrophic consequences, such as disrupting rainfall patterns, and should be deployed only as a last resort if attempts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions fail. The Royal Society, a fellowship of 1,400 of the world’s most eminent scientists, published a report yesterday on the feasibility and possible dangers of technologies for cooling down the Earth, known as geoengineering.

Space station experiment to hunt antimatter galaxies

Antimatter galaxies and dark matter have long haunted physicists' theories, but no instrument in orbit has had the power to confirm or deny their existence. Now a $1.5 billion cosmic ray detector scheduled for launch in 2010 could usher in a new era for discovering all that's weird and wonderful about the universe. Cosmic rays consist of high-energy particles that emerge from catastrophic events such as supernovas, and may also hold the clues to whether antimatter galaxies and dark matter truly exist

Report: DNA Test Proves John Edwards Knocked Up Rielle Hunter

Sources say a DNA test shows what we already knew – that former presidential hopeful John Edwards fathered former campaign aide Rielle Hunter’s baby. The National Enquirer , which last year broke the story of Edwards’ affair with the weird campaign videographer, said the test was taken after Hunter tried to get financial help from Edwards for her 18-month-old daughter, Frances Quinn. Rielle Hunter agreed to testify to a federal grand jury investigating John Edwards for allegedly paying “hush” money out of his campaign coffers to Hunter and another former aide who claimed paternity of the child, Andrew Young

New study says there probably isn’t any life on Mars

If there's any life on Mars, it's not likely to exist on or just below the planet's surface, concludes a new study of Mars' mysterious methane, a gas which on Earth is tied to biological processes. The discovery of rich plumes of methane on Mars earlier this year fed theories that the planet could host underground colonies of micro-organisms. However, rapid destruction of methane suggests that the planet's environment may be too hostile to support life.
