Royal Society to Study the Impact of Population Growth

While many species on Earth have been teetering on the edge of extinction in recent decades, human beings have witnessed a population boom on a scale that is quite difficult imagine . It was just in 1804 that the human population first numbered one billion, which seems quaint considering that 200 years later, there’s about 6.7 billion of us on Earth. So far, no one is really sure what this unchecked population growth means for the future of mankind — or how… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Vuvuzelas are ”World Cup”s symbol” say organisers

JOHANNESBURG: They might be driving some players and supporters to distraction but World Cup organisers on Saturday decreed that the ear-splitting vuvuzela trumpet was the symbol of the tournaement. “Everybody loves vuvuzelas,” Rich Mkhondo, spokesman for the Local Organising Committee said at a press conference. “They are the symbol of the tournament.” The tuneless plastic horns, which generate more decibels than a drum or chainsaw, have split opinion almost as much as they have split ears. Commentators struggled to make themselves heard during the opening matches of the month-long tournament which kicked off on Friday. Many spectators have complained of headaches and some players say they affect their concentration. However FIFA president Sepp Blatter has said they are part of African football culture and South Africa”s goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune complained they were not loud enough at the hosts” tournament opener against Mexico. “We want more support and louder vuvuzelas when we play our next match against Uruguay in Pretoria on Wednesday,” he said. “We could hardly hear the fans who were quiet at stages during the game.” Mkhondo said that no complaints about the vuvuzela had been lodged while a spokesman for FIFA said that fans had so far respected calls not to blow their horns at sensitive moments. “A few days ago, FIFA asked the fans to respect the ceremonies, speeches and anthems,” said the spokesman Nicolas Maingot. “We have had no problem with that”.

Magical Messi inspires Argentina to victory over Nigeria

JOHANNESBURG: Lionel Messi conjured a spellbinding opening to the World Cup highlighting Argentina”s 1-0 win over Nigeria in their Group B match at Ellis Park Stadium here on Saturday. The world”s best player was in irresistible form as the two-time world champions dominated Nigeria, but only had Gabriel Heinze”s sixth-minute goal to show for their superiority in an exhilarating spectacle before 55,686 noisy fans. Messi taunted the Africans with his mesmerising skill and virtuosity and was denied his first goal at South Africa 2010 only by the acrobatic saves of Nigerian goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama. With coach Diego Maradona prowling his sideline technical area for the whole match, Argentina could not find the second killer goal as the uninhibited Nigerians came close several times in the second half to grabbing an equaliser. It was a rasping Messi volley tipped over the bar by Enyeama that indirectly led to the only goal in the opening minutes. Sebastian Veron”s corner picked up unmarked Heinze hurtling in late and the Marseille defender headed powerfully past Enyeama to send the large contingent of Argentine fans wild. Argentina had numerous scoring chances, none more so than Messi”s charge on goal nine minutes from time. Yet again he was thwarted by Enyeama”s blocking feet to keep the Nigerians in the game. On another occasion Carlos Tevez triggered a counter-attack from deep inside his own half in the 65th minute and set up Messi only for him to shoot agonisingly past the post with Enyeama beaten. Left-back Taye Taiwo came closest for Nigeria in the second half with his thumping volley just fizzing past the far post on 71 minutes. But the Nigerians made the openings only to spoil their chances with errant finishing with Hoffenheim”s left winger Chinedu Ogbuke Obasi going close on a couple of occasions in the first half. Argentina”s Newcastle United defensive midfielder Jonas Gutierrez and Nigeria midfielder Lukman Haruna picked up yellow cards in the match. Argentina have won all three of their matches with Nigeria at the World Cup after winning 2-1 at the 1994 tournament in the USA – Maradona”s last international appearance as he was then sent home in disgrace for failing a drugs test – and 1-0 at the 2002 Korea/Japan edition. Nigeria”s last victory at the World Cup was back in 1998 when they beat Bulgaria 1-0 and since then the Super Eagles have lost five games and drawn one.

Green blunder pegs England back

RUSTENBURG: England”s hopes of a winning start to their World Cup campaign were shattered by an extraordinary blunder by goalkeeper Robert Green that gifted the United States their equaliser in a 1-1 draw here on Saturday. England captain Steven Gerrard gave his side a dream start to their Group C campaign with a fourth minute strike at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium. But Fabio Capello”s men were sent back to square one when Green let in Clint Dempsey”s tame, 25-yard shot five minutes from half-time. “The idea tonight was to win the game, but unfortunately we have let a poor goal in and we couldn”t go on and get the winner,” said Gerrard. “The target now has got to be seven points.” US coach Bob Bradley praised his side. “It was a great team effort to come back and equalise. At half-time we said we had a chance to win and at the end we took a point,” he said. England had gone ahead from their first foray into opposition territory. Picking up a Glen Johnson throw-in from the right, Frank Lampard threaded a pass that was flicked on by Wayne Rooney to Emile Heskey on the edge of the area. The Aston Villa striker got in front of Jay DeMerit and his first-time ball anticipated an untracked run by Gerrard, who prodded the ball past Tim Howard with the outside of his boot. That might have precipitated a collapse from less resilient sides but the Americans were soon creating problems, particularly down the right. England had a significant let-off when Jozy Altidore headed Landon Donovan”s chip wide after outjumping Ledley King but they generally looked in control of the match until Green”s 40th-minute blunder. Gerrard was partly culpable, having allowed Dempsey to twist away from him on the edge of the area but still there seemed no danger as the West Ham goalkeeper knelt to gather a shot directed straight at him. Somehow the man Capello had selected ahead of the more experienced David James allowed the ball to spin off his right glove and over the line. England hit back through Glen Johnson, who tested Tim Howard after a mazy run to the edge of the area, but they were unable to restore their advantage before the interval. Heskey should have done so soon after the restart, when Aaron Lennon”s first-time pass sent him clear of a flat-footed American defence. But the striker”s shot was unleashed too early and straight at Howard. England”s frustration was clear as Jamie Carragher, on as a second half substitute for King, and Gerrard picked up bookings in quick succession for late challenges. Lampard made his presence felt with a left-foot drive that Howard had to touch over at full stretch. But it was the Americans who enjoyed the clearest chance of a winner, Donovan releasing Altidore whose close range strike was touched on to the post by Green. England”s best chance of the second period fell to Shaun Wright-Phillips, but Howard was able to comfortably beat away the Manchester City winger”s poorly directed shot from the left of the goalmouth and it was the Americans who finished the match pressing for a winner.

Video: Deaf Baby Hearing for the First Time Intended to Make You Cry, Ovulate

So there's this video going around the internet of a little boy after receiving a cochlear implant — the surgically implanted device designed to help the hearing-impaired or fully-deaf actually hear — and hearing for the first time. Woman, man, whatever — if your biological clock is ticking at any volume, you will not want to watch this, because you will cry, and then find the closest child/baby/animal/unusually small person, and adopt it. http://blogs.villagevoice.com/runninscared/archives/2010/05/video_boy_heari.php added by: unimatrix0

Porn Actor Accused of Murder Dies After Cliff-Top Standoff in L.A.

LOS ANGELES, USA — A porn actor wanted for allegedly murdering a co-worker with a samurai-style sword died after jumping from a cliff edge following a standoff with Los Angeles police, police said. Stephen Hill plunged around 50 feet off a sheer rock face after being stunned with a Taser by Los Angeles Police Department officers who had been negotiating with him for several hours. Television footage of the incident showed Hill scrambling off the edge of the cliff feet first as police moved in after stunning him. “He jumped down off the cliff after he was Tased,” LAPD spokesman Bruce Borihanh said. Whether Hill died from being Tasered, the fall or possibly landing on the sword he was armed with was under investigation, Borihanh said. Hill was wanted for one count of murder and five counts of attempted murder after attacking colleagues at a pornographic film distribution company warehouse in Los Angeles on Tuesday. Saturday's dramatic denouement began when police received a tip-off that Hill had been spotted at a property in the San Fernando Valley. Hill was discovered at the property and was subsequentely cornered by officers at the edge of a steep cliff near the house, where he had threatened to kill himself, police said. Local media initially reported that Hill was in police custody and being treated by paramedics. Television footage had earlier showed the actor holding a samurai sword and shouting at police to keep their distance. Hill, who has appeared in several porn films under the stage name “Steve Driver,” is alleged to have murdered fellow actor Herbert Wong at the warehouse-style offices of Ultima DVD on Tuesday. Wong, who had appeared in two films with Hill under the name “Tom Dong,” died as he tried to help other staff to escape, the company's owner said. Hill's rampage appeared to have been triggered by the discovery that he was about to be fired and evicted from the office where he had been living, according to local media reports. from (APF) added by: CarlosBobthe3rd

Green Lantern May Be Orange

I know they’re doing some nontraditional things with the costume for The Green Lantern , but did they really have to mess with Ryan Reynolds’s face? Our good friends at the WOW Report noticed that in a paparazzi picture snapped on the set, the actor was seen sporting a shade of fake tan that goes past “Michael Kors” and teeters on the edge of “insensitive blackface routine from Mad Men .” Take a powder, guys!
