R.I.P: Donald M. Payne, First African-American Elected To House Of Representatives From New Jersey Dies Of Colon Cancer

We lost another good one y’all. Rep. Donald M. Payne, a Democrat from New Jersey, has died, his Congressional office said in a statement Tuesday. He was 77. Payne was serving his twelfth term in the U.S. Congress, making him one of the longest-serving members of New Jersey’s congressional delegation. In its statement, Payne’s office said the congressman died of complications from colon cancer. Payne announced to his constituents in February he was battling the disease. “New Jersey has lost a noble public servant, and the world has lost an amazing human being,” Payne’s office wrote. “Those of us who have been fortunate enough to know and work with Rep. Payne have lost a dear friend and an inspiring mentor.” In a statement, President Barack Obama said Payne “lived a full and meaningful life.” “Don will be missed, and our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends during this difficult time,” Obama’s statement read. Payne was born in Newark, New Jersey in 1934, according to a biography on his Congressional website. He was the first African-American to be elected to the U.S. House of Representatives from New Jersey, and served as the chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation, a non-profit educational group. In the House, Payne served on the Education and Workforce and Foreign Affairs committees. Among his achievements was founding the Malaria Caucus with former first lady Laura Bush, and helping secure funding to battle other diseases afflicting countries in Africa. He was also recognized for his support of legislation promoting peace in Northern Ireland, and for passing a resolution declaring genocide in Darfur, Sudan. He graduated from Seton Hall University, and held honorary degrees from a number of colleges and universities. Payne’s biography notes he is a widower and a father of three. He will truly be missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends. R.I.P. to Donald M. Payne Source Photo Credit: Bill Clark/CQ Roll Call More On Bossip! John Mayer Announces Spring Tour

His new album, Born and Raised, is also slated for the spring. By Jocelyn Vena John Mayer Photo: Mike Coppola/Getty Images John Mayer announced he needed vocal surgery last fall, and now he’s back and ready to hit the road. On Monday (February 27), the Grammy-winning singer/songwriter announced plans for a spring tour , his first outing in nearly two years. The 18-date trek will kick off April 9 in Bloomington, Indiana, before wrapping up May 6 in Phoenix. The tour will be in support of his forthcoming new album, Born and Raised, which will be released sometime around the outing. The album’s lead single, “Shadow Days,” hits radio Monday. The tour will help raise funds and awareness for the Northern California Institute of Research and Education, which “provides veterans with a healthy reintegration into civilian life.” Mayer will auction off tickets to the shows to help raise money for the organization. Born and Raised will feature production from Don Was, and Mayer will get some vocal and instrumental help from singers David Crosby and Graham Nash, keyboardist/pianist Chuck Leavell, bassist Sean Hurley and drummer Aaron Sterling. On tour, Mayer will be joined by guitarist and vocalist David Ryan Harris, guitarist Doug Pettibone and percussionist Michito Sanchez. Previously, Mayer described the album as having “organic cowboy guitar sounds,” adding that he had this very romantic thought when it came to the album’s vibe: “What would it sound like if I wrote an album of cowboy songs on this guitar under the stars?” “Every new record I start, a new aesthetic comes in. I can’t help it,” he said about the project. “I think it’s gonna be more organic, more natural lyrics and chords and artful simplicity.” Will you check out John Mayer on tour?
