Carmelo Anthony Says He Couldn’t Do Anything Without Education

‘I had to take care of school, and then everything else just fell in place,’ NBA phenom reminds kids at Get Schooled event. By Mawuse Ziegbe, with reporting by Jeff Schneider Carmelo Anthony Photo: MTV News Carmelo Anthony’s mesmerizing moves on the court wouldn’t be possible without one key factor — and it’s not just putting in extra work at practice. “Without education, I couldn’t really do nothing,” Anthony told MTV News at a Get Schooled event at Denver’s George Washington High School, which was also attended by Ludacris, indie MC Saigon and ‘Melo’s wife La La Vazquez. “Without my grades, I couldn’t really play ball, I couldn’t really hang out. I had to take care of school, and then everything else just fell in place.” The Denver Nuggets forward insisted that anybody who wants to score success should use a strong educational background as their jumping-off point. “Education should be first in everybody’s agenda. I think high school and just education gets you prepared for the real world,” ‘Melo maintained. As challenging as homework may be, the megastar baller said making a mark outside of the classroom is a lot harder. “All the subjects that you think is hard right now in high school, trust me, it gets harder out there in the real world,” he explained. “So this is where it starts, this is the stepping-stone.” Anthony said he enjoyed his face time with the high-schoolers at the event and dreamed big about taking the project to the next level. “I think Get Schooled probably, for me, is one of the best programs that I’ve been involved in — and I’m not just saying that because I’m on here,” Anthony said. “Just for the simple fact that we get a chance to hear from young kids what’s going on in their mind and their life and what can they do to better their education. “I wish that we could just do it on a much bigger scale. Hopefully we can just grow the tour to 20 cities next time,” he continued. “And not just have us come out there and talk, but actually showing the statistics and the videos, just everything that goes along with it.” Stay tuned to MTV News for more information about how you can get the president to speak at your commencement celebration at the end of this school year. Get Schooled is a national program aimed at increasing high school and college graduation rates and promoting the importance of education, developed by Viacom in partnership with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Have we found the universe that existed before the Big Bang?

The current cosmological census is that the universe began 13.7 billion years ago with the Big Bang. But a legendary physicist says he's found the first evidence of an eternal, cyclic cosmos. The Big Bang model holds that everything that now comprises the universe was once concentrated in a single point of near-infinite density. Before this singularity exploded and the universe began, there was absolutely nothing – indeed, it's not clear whether one can even use the term “before” in reference to a pre-Big-Bang cosmos, as time itself may not have existed yet. In the current model, the universe began with the Big Bang, underwent cosmic inflation for a fraction of a second, then settled into the much more gradual expansion that is still going on, and likely will end with the universe as an infinitely expanded, featureless cosmos. Sir Roger Penrose, one of the most renowned physicists of the last fifty years, takes issue with this view. He points out that the universe was apparently born in a very low state of entropy, meaning a very high degree of order initially existed, and this is what made the complex matter we see all around us (and are composed of) possible in the first place. His objection is that the Big Bang model can't explain why such a low entropy state existed, and he believes he has a solution – that the universe is just one of many in a cyclical chain, with each Big Bang starting up a new universe in place of the one before. How does this help? Well, Penrose posits the end of each universe will involve a return to low entropy. This is because black holes suck in all the matter, energy, and information they encounter, which works to remove entropy from our universe. (Where that entropy might go is another question entirely.) The universe's continued expansion into eventual nothingness causes the black holes themselves to evaporate, which ultimately leaves the universe in a highly ordered state once again, ready to contract into another singularity and set off the next Big Bang. As alternative theories go, it's not without its merits, but there's no evidence to support it…until now. He says he's found evidence for his ideas in the cosmic microwave background, the microwave radiation that permeates the universe and was thought to have formed 300,000 years after the Big Bang, providing a record of the universe at that far distant time. Penrose and his colleague Vahe Gurzadyan have discovered clear concentric circles within the data, which suggests regions of the radiation have much smaller temperature ranges than elsewhere. So what does that mean? Penrose believes these circles are windows into the previous universe, spherical ripples left behind by the gravitational effects of colliding black holes in the previous universe. He also says these circles don't work well at all in the current inflationary model, which holds all temperature variations in the CMB should be truly random. Here's where the fun begins. If the circles are really there and are really doing what Penrose says they're doing, then he's managed to overthrow the standard inflationary model. But there's a long way to go between where we are now and that point, assuming it ever happens. The inflationary model has become the consensus for a good reason – it's the best explanation we've got for the universe we have now – and so cosmologists will examine any results that appear to disprove it very critically. There are also a couple key assumptions in Penrose's theory, particularly that all particles will lose their mass towards the end of the universe. Right now, we don't know whether that will actually happen – in particular, there's no proof that electrons ever decay. http://io9.com/5694701/does-cosmic-background-radiation-reveal-the-universe-befo… added by: pjacobs51

CBS inadvertently revealed motive for the 9/11 terror attacks

“It's very good…….Well, it's not good, but it will generate immediate sympathy (for Israel)” -Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's sttatements to the New York Times, September 12, 2001. @ 43 seconds a newly released video from a lawsuit against The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), CBS reported that on September 23, 2001, Israeli and major Jewish leaders from around the world were supposed to meet in the United States to rally political support for Israel which was waning at the time. Oh yeah and they also reported that a third explosion at the base of the towers brought down WTC 1, plus reports of other explosions and fires in Washington by people on the ground carrying out the attacks. added by: maasanova

What would a truly progressive society look like?

In thinking about the “what is a progressive?” issue, I realized that it might help to ask the question a slightly different way: what would a genuinely progressive society look like? Maybe I can better understand what it means to be progressive in 2010 if I reverse-engineer the definition from a vision of the future where things work the way they ought to. added by: hoosierdaddy

Propaganda Alert: AP reports Small Farms are Exempt from Food Safety Bill

A day after the Food Safety Modernization Act (S.510) passed cloture with a vote of 74-25, theAssociated Press put out some world-class propaganda claiming that “Somesmall farms would be exempt from government efforts to prevent foodborne illness under a Senate agreement on food safety legislation.” The article claims a last-minute deal was struck to allow small farms to “avoid expensive food safety plans:” The agreement brokered by Democratic Sen. Jon Tester of Montana and announced Thursday would attempt to allay concerns of smaller farms about a food safety bill now pending in the Senate. That bill would give the FDA more authority to recall tainted products, increase inspections of food processors and require producers to follow stricter standards for keeping food safe. The agreement brokered by Tester would allow farmers who make less than $500,000 a year in revenue and sell directly to consumers, restaurants or grocery stores within their states or within 275 miles of their farms to avoid expensive food safety plans required of larger operations. That all sounds well and good, but it only exempts them from having to submit food safety plans, not from inspections that they get billed for, licensing requirements with expensive quality controls, product confiscation without cause or recourse, and even armed raids. We've already seen all of these ugly faces of food fascism unfold in America. Private organic co-ops have beenraided by armed guards, lemonade standsfined and closed down, Amish Dairies raided, and a family farm had 50,000 pounds of cheese confiscated. This type of food tyranny is only likely to increase when the food safety bill passes, seizing the righteousness of protecting the people. Evidently, the bill essentially transfers the authority over food regulation enforcement from the FDA to the Department of Homeland Securitywho brought us the liberty-killing, child-molesting TSA. Finally, this bill will do nothing to protect the public from foodborne diseases, because it does nothing to fundamentally change the factory food production methods that allow them to fester. The bill will allow the big agri-cartel to further consolidate the food industry, thus gaining even more control over food and humanity itself. This, clearly, is the real purpose of this bill. We can expect to see the “authorities” raiding a lot more small, private health-food cooperatives like in the video below. Tyranny is coming to a family farm or organic co-op near you. added by: GLOBALPOLITICAL
