China’s Censorship: Sensitive Words

The Chinese author Han Han wrote a blog post announcing, “Other Chinese nominees include sensitive word, sensitive word and sensitive word.” It sounded like a joke, but one that Han’s huge fan base would immediately get. “Sensitive word” was a back stab at China’s web censors’ habit of sometime blocking common place such as blog posts and Web searches. Within a few weeks, his post created more than 25,000 comments, and almost all of the posts are in favor of the writer, only just a few who opposed are irritable about the state of online freedom in China. Some critics in China regarding the censorship forecasted that the information will inescapably dodge efforts to prevent it. There are acceptable reasons why the Chinese government applied limited access to the internet to abolish abhorrent discussions such as independence drives in the regions of Tibet and Xiangjiang and the banned religious movement call Falun Gong. There are tens of thousands of censors adapted by the Chinese government; restricting access to information both at home and abroad is a very difficult. Each work is screened by workers from large Web portals who take care of blocking contents which are inappropriate to the standards given by the Chinese government. This is popularly known as the “Great Firewall of China,” which authorities blocks access to overseas Web pages deemed offensive and secure domestic sites. Regardless of those restrictions, the internet in China rolls with debate over current events. China now has estimated 384 internet users, greater than the total population of the U.S. China’s Censorship: Sensitive Words is a post from: Daily World Buzz Continue reading

Philippines Celebrates ‘Salubong’; A Unique Way of Welcoming Easter

Being a Catholic country, Philippines is making the Lenten season a holiday. It is week long commemoration of the life that Jesus experienced on His quest to the cross up to the day that He has risen. In every Philippine municipality, you could also find a catholic church wherein it houses the municipality’s patron saint. During Lenten Season, Easter celebration is the most festive among the days. Every catholic church will have the Salubong , a Tagalog term which means “meeting of two people”. It believed to be the meet up of the risen Jesus and His mother Mary. This meet up is done during the break of the dawn and a lot of people would gather to witness it as they catch flower confetti thrown by the singing children dressed up as little angels. These little angels would sing hymns as the meet up takes place and the lead angel, who is seated in a suspended chair decorated with flowers, removed the black veil of Mary. After the removal of veil, the angels will throw the confetti of flowers to the crowd. Afterwhich, the crowd will enter the church and attend the first mass of the day. This is how Filipinos welcome Easter Sunday followed by egg huntings and beach celebrations afterwards. Keira Knightley Gutted By Missing ‘My Fair Lady’ Role

Pirates of the Caribbean star Keira Knightley is reportedly “gutted” at missing out on the lead role in a movie adaptation of My Fair Lady . According to the Sunday Mirror , Knightley, 25, has reportedly been working hard with singing lessons in a bid to get the role but lost out to An Education star Carey Mulligan , 24. “Keira wanted to play the role. She’s been linked to the production for nearly four years. She’s always loved Audrey Hepburn, who starred in the original movie, and had spent the last year working her backside off with private singing lessons. She knew she didn’t have a huge voice but she was willing to put the effort in for the role. It would have been a role of a lifetime for Keira, and she’s gutted that it hasn’t worked out.” As disappointed as Keira is, we think Carey is a much better choice.

Earth Hour 2010

One of the global problems that each and everyone is experiencing is the Global Warming which can also be associated to climate change. Because of its success, many cities around the world adopted the event in 2008. During the 2009 Earth Hour movement, 611 MWh of electricity was able to saved by Philippines which was equivalent to shutting off dozen of coal-fired power plants for an hour. This year, 2010, 120 countries will participate the event. That means that even the well recognized countries will participate. This will be on March 27, 2010, from 8:30 to 9:30PM local time. Maggie Gyllenhaal Boggled By Britishisms

Maggie Gyllenhaal, while walking the blue carpet for the Leicester Square premiere of her new movie with Emma Thompson , Nanny McPhee and The Big Bang , she spoke of her American-centric travels to Britain, where she needed a translator often. The actress said that although she and husband Pete Sarsgaard spent a lot of time across the pond for his acclaimed flick An Education , the culture gap remained vast according to Contact Music . “You know, I have been here so much we shot The Dark Knight here, my husband shot An Education here, but I think it’s funny – we speak the same language and so many things are similar about New York and London but culturally there are huge differences. I have to do a lot of translating, ‘what do they mean by that?’ But I love London, like, love it.” It must be all those extra “U’s” that really confuse here.

Outside Texas, alarm over textbook changes – latimes.com

Interesting take on the Texas education board decision. When Texas' conservative-leaning Board of Education voted for new social studies standards this month, parents, teachers and lawmakers far beyond the Lone Star state — particularly the liberal ones — took notice. With the changes, Texas' curriculum is likely to de-emphasize the concept in U.S. history of separating church and state, and the influence of Thomas Jefferson on 18th century world history. It would also cast a positive light on conservatives, such as Phyllis Schlafly and the late Sen. Joseph McCarthy. Concerned observers have warned that those ideas could seep into textbooks throughout the country, because Texas is one of the nation's largest textbook buyers. In California last week, state Sen. Leland Yee (D-San Francisco) announced that he was working out the details of legislation that would inoculate California students from the Texas version of history. “While some Texas politicians may want to set their educational standards back 50 years, California should not be subject to their backward curriculum changes,” he said. But it is far from clear that non-Texans will be subjected to the proposed changes, once they are finalized, as expected, in May. Though none of the three major K-12 textbook publishers — Pearson Education Inc., Houghton Mifflin Harcourt and McGraw-Hill — would comment for this article, observers of the $8-billion industry offered differing views on the likelihood that Texas could wield such influence beyond its borders — in part because the textbook business, like American history itself, is a fluid affair influenced by commerce, culture, legislation and technology. Texas and California are not just the two largest textbook markets in the nation. They are also among 20 states that industry insiders refer to as “adoption” states, meaning that they choose which textbooks can be used statewide. The remaining states let local schools and districts essentially choose whatever books they want, as long as the students who read them meet state-mandated standards.
