Elizabeth Edwards Passes Away at 61

Elizabeth Edwards, a lawyer, best-selling author, mother of three and the wife of two-time presidential candidate John Edwards, died in her North Carolina home. She was 61. Just days after doctors advised her to suspend her cancer treatment , Elizabeth tragically succumbed after battling the disease for over six years. Elizabeth Edwards was surrounded by friends and family in her last days, including John himself. She and John were estranged following the Rielle Hunter scandal. R.I.P. Elizabeth Edwards (1949-2010). Monday, Elizabeth posted what read like a farewell message on her Facebook page reading, “The days of our lives, for all of us, are numbered. We know that.” “And yes, there are certainly times when we aren’t able to muster as much strength and patience as we would like. It’s called being human,”she added. “But I have found that in the simple act of living with hope, and in the daily effort to have a positive impact in the world, the days I do have are made all the more meaningful and precious. And for that, I am grateful.” Elizabeth is survived by a grown daughter, Cate, and two young children, Jack and Emma. Her son Wade died in a car accident at age 16 back in 1996. A graduate of the University of North Carolina Law School, she was her famous husband’s intellectual equal, his chief ideologue and most of all, his rock. Edwards helped remake the role of the political spouse in this era. She was the driving force behind her husband’s rise to the Democratic political elite. As strategist, campaign manager, surrogate and public interpreter for her husband, she earned a nation’s respect – but that respect grew in recent years. John Edwards’ career unraveled as quickly and shockingly after he fathered a love child with Hunter, then lied and possibly illegally tried to cover it up. But Elizabeth’s charm, intelligence and class never wavered, and her willingness to condemn John’s actions and separate from him spoke volumes. Our condolences go out to her children and loved ones.

Elizabeth Edwards Dies At 61

Wife of former presidential candidate John Edwards and best-selling author loses six-year battle with cancer. By Eric Ditzian Elizabeth Edwards Photo: Jeffrey Mayer/ WireImage Elizabeth Edwards, the wife of former presidential candidate John Edwards, died at her home in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, after a six-year fight with cancer, according to multiple reports. A best-selling author and a driving force behind her husband’s political career, Mrs. Edwards discovered she had breast cancer on Election Day in 2004, when Senator John Kerry and Mr. Edwards, his running mate, lost to President George W. Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney. She underwent extensive radiation and chemotherapy, sending her cancer into temporary remission, an ordeal she detailed in her 2006 memoir, “Saving Graces: Finding Solace and Strength from Friends and Strangers.” Using his wife’s cancer as a driving force (the disease returned in 2007), heath care reform became a central platform for Mr. Edwards’ second presidential bid. But shortly after his defeat in the Democratic primaries, Mr. Edwards admitted that he had carried on an extramarital affair with a campaign worker, though he insisted the relationship took place during his wife’s remission. “Although John believes he should stand alone and take the consequences of his action now, when the door closes behind him, he has his family waiting for him,” Mrs. Edwards said in a statement at the time. She’d go on to address the affair in a second memoir, “Resilience: Reflections on the Burdens and Gifts of Facing Life’s Adversities.” Mr. Edwards would later admit he fathered a child with the campaign worker, Rielle Hunter, and Mr. and Mrs. Edwards became legally separated in January. A graduate of the University of North Carolina Law School, Mrs. Edwards practiced law for many years and raised two children with her husband. In 1996, her 16-year-old son was killed in a car accident, a tragedy that spurred Mr. Edwards’ decision to run for the Senate in 1998. When Mrs. Edwards’ cancer returned in 2004, it was said to be malignant, to have spread to her bones, lungs and lymph nodes, and to be treatable but not curable. Just days ago, the Edwards family announced that the cancer had spread to her liver and that she had stopped all treatment. She was released from the hospital and returned home, where her family, including her husband, was said to be by her side. Share your thoughts for the Edwards family in the comments.

Elizabeth Edwards Gravely Ill, Suspends Treatment as Cancer Spreads

Elizabeth Edwards’ cancer fight has taken a turn for the worse. With the disease spreading to her liver, the wife of John Edwards revealed that she is resting at home and no longer seeking treatment for the disease. “Elizabeth has been advised by her doctors that further treatment of her cancer would be unproductive,” the Edwards family says in a statement. On Monday, the ailing Edwards posted a Facebook message to her friends that can be tragically interpreted as a farewell of sorts. She writes: “I have been sustained by three saving graces – my family, my friends, and a faith in the power of resilience and hope. These graces have carried me through difficult times and have brought more joy to the good times than I ever could have imagined.” “The days of our lives, for all of us, are numbered. We know that.” “It isn’t possible to put into words the love and gratitude I feel to everyone who has and continues to support and inspire me every day,” Elizabeth Edwards continued. “To you I simply say: you know. With love, Elizabeth.” Edwards, who was first diagnosed with breast cancer in November 2004, was briefly hospitalized last week after not feeling well over Thanksgiving. Doctors said her cancer had metastasized to the liver. Family members – including adult daughter Cate, a Washington lawyer, and her brother and sister, Jay and Nancy Anania – rushed home to be with her. Elizabeth and John Edwards, the two-time White House hopeful who has been estranged from her following the infamous birth of his love child with Rielle Hunter , also have two younger children together, Jack and Emma. Our thoughts are with Elizabeth and those close to her.

Ex-Wife, Daughter Speak on John Edwards Affair, Savaging of Their Lives

John Edwards and his daughter Cate used to be tight. Then, the disgraced politician became one of the worst people alive, cheating on his cancer-stricken wife, knocking up his mistress, paying an aide to take responsibility for the child. That sort of thing. Now, in her first comments since her father’s secret life became exposed, Cate is siding – strongly – with her mother, Elizabeth. She told People : “There are the things she taught without words, [such as] how to continue to live your life on your own terms when it somehow becomes savaged by people you never invited into it.” (Pssst, Rielle Hunter : We think she’s talking about you.) Elizabeth Edwards also speaks on in next week’s issue of the magazine, saying she’s hard at work on a paperback edition of her memoir, Resilience . It will include a new chapter reflecting on the most damaging aspects of the fallout from her husband’s infidelity. Says Mrs. Edwards: “It’s my story and I’m writing it from here on out – nobody else.”

Rielle Hunter Wants to Get Paid

The incomparable Rielle Hunter, John Edwards’ mistress, mother of his love child and possible sex tape partner, thinks she should be cashing in on this more. The Rielle Deal is requesting all the profits from The Politician , the shocking tell-all memoir from Edwards’ former aide and co-conspirator, Andrew Young. Hunter believes she is entitled to all money generated by The Politician and any movie made from its contents, which largely revolve around herself. In it, Andrew Young describes his efforts to help the former presidential candidate conceal his affair with Hunter and his paternity of their daughter. Court documents allege that Rielle Hunter pictures and other personal property Young used in the book were private property and used illegally. SEDUCTION : Rielle Hunter breaks marriages. Now she wants to break the bank . Hunter and Young spoke privately in a Charlotte courtroom last month. A grand jury is still investigating Edwards’ use of campaign funds to silence her. Young has testified that he helped Edwards cover up the affair and the fact that he knocked up Rielle, even claiming that he , not John, fathered the kid. Rielle is also suing for every copy of the alleged John Edwards sex tape , made when she was pregnant with their child. You’re welcome for that imagery. Hunter also wants photos from Young’s laptop and a computer file. On a side note, today’s her baby daddy’s birthday . Woo hoo!

John Edwards: Seeking Plea Deal, Scared of Jail

Disgraced politician John Edwards is determined to work out a “plea deal” to avoid jail time as the federal grand jury investigating continues to examine his case. The bombshell developments surfaced earlier this week about the former U.S. Senator and presidential candidate from sources close to the situation in Raleigh, N.C. John Edwards has been investigated by both the FBI and IRS for possible campaign violations related to paying hush money to his weird mistress Rielle Hunter . The grand jury convened back in April 2009, and the National Enquirer reported this March that an indictment was imminent and Edwards will face consequences. Sources say “John is terrified” of jail, too. Better man up, Johnny! Will John Edwards do time for his bribes to Rielle Hunter? But he may escape that fate yet. Edwards is working “around the clock behind the scenes with his lawyers to work out a deal with prosecutors,” a source disclosed. “John does not want to be indicted – and he certainly doesn’t want to go to jail! It appears he’s willing to cop to a misdemeanor . He’s asking to keep his law license.” It appears, however, that “he will admit some guilt.” Beginning in 2007, a series of stories blew the lid off Edwards’ affair with blonde divorcee Rielle Hunter and the birth of their love child, daughter Frances Quinn. Rielle was on Edwards’ campaign payroll. In August 2008, the issue of “hush money” paid to Rielle and Andrew Young , a married Edwards’ aide, first arose. It was Young who helped cover up the affair by claiming he, not Edwards, was involved with Rielle and had fathered her child, he later admitted.
