Zac Efron Visits Peru, Thanks Fans for Support

Zac Efron may have recently vacationed in Peru, but his thoughts were always back home with his fans. The actor, who spent time earlier this year in rehab, posted a photo of himself abroad to WhoSay this week and included with it a caption of gratitude that reads: Hey guys! Just returned from an incredible trip to Peru with my dad and wanted to thank you all for your support these past few weeks… means the world to me. Love you guys! In came out in mid-September that Efron sought professional help in the spring. Rumors then circulated that Efron became hooked on cocaine partly to deal with a floundering career and partly over pressure from his parents. According to the latest report, the ex-High School Musical star overdosed on oxycodone (AKA “hillbilly heroin”) during a wild night out on January 3. An onlooker who spent that evening with Efron even claims he had to be revived by guests at a party. “I was scared for him,” the source says. “If he doesn’t clean himself up, he’ll be Hollywood’s next big drug tragedy.” Fortunately, it appears as if the young star got the message. We send him our best.

Nicole Kidman Talks ‘Raw And Dangerous’ ‘Paperboy’ At Cannes

Lee Daniels-directed film, also starring Zac Efron and Matthew McConaughey, has met with decidedly mixed reception. By Kara Warner Nicole Kidman in “The Paperboy” Photo: Lee Daniels Entertainment Much ado is made over the glitz and glamour that surrounds the exotic Cannes Film Festival each year. A lot of what brings so many celebrities and so much attention to the international film fest is its location. Who doesn’t want to travel to the sandy shores of the French Riviera for “work”? The other big draw, of course, is the opportunity to see movies of all genres, budgets, origin, etc., many of which can get an early jump into awards-season consideration with positive reviews from the notoriously hard-to-please Cannes audiences. From the outside looking in, “The Paperboy” is one of the films at the festival that has major awards-buzz potential because of its director, Oscar nominee Lee Daniels (“Precious”), and its cast: Nicole Kidman, Zac Efron, Matthew McConaughey and John Cusack. Judging from the initial reactions to the small-town, sexed-up murder mystery, however, the reception has been decidedly mixed. “Daniels wants to show us realities that other movies don’t, and I truly think that he’s got the talent and drive to do it. But there’s a major downside to that impulse,” wrote . “If what happens on screen is in any way odd or exaggerated or, even worse, if it defies common sense, the clang of falseness is going to be deafening. “The line on this movie in Cannes is the same one that a lot of critics, including me, took on Daniels’ ‘Shadowboxer’: that it’s so luridly overripe it’s nuts — or, at the very least, high camp,” Gleiberman continued. “Certainly, you’re going to have that feeling during the scene when Kidman, at the beach, saves Efron from a jellyfish sting by urinating on him — which is an anti-jellyfish home remedy, but the way the scene is shot, I think Daniels had something else in mind. The wrong notes, the extremeness, just piles up from there.” Efron and Kidman spoke to the film’s extremes during a press conference Thursday (May 24). “I don’t think I was supposed to feel comfortable,” Efron said. “It’s like life. This character is supposed to be learning the ways of the world, and that can be very uncomfortable. But it’s also exciting.” “I’d been looking as an actor for something raw and something dangerous,” Kidman said. “I may be uncomfortable watching the movie. But that’s my job — it’s my job to give over to something, not to censor it, not to put my own judgments of how I feel as Nicole playing the character. I am there to portray a truth.” And no matter the discomfort surrounding the onscreen nudity, sex or the pee scene, Efron said he loved the experience of making the movie. “I’ve been in love with her for a long time, since ‘Moulin Rouge,’ “the actor said of Kidman. “It was the loveliest time in the world for me.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . My Big Fat American Gypsy Wedding Fight Must Be Seen to Be Believed

Move aside, Basketball Wives . Step off, Jenelle Evans. Two girls on TLC’s My Big Fat American Gypsy Wedding just set the new high water mark for reality TV fights, and it may take a long time to top this. At a wedding in West Virginia, two girls (one from each side of the family) got into it after one said the soon-to-be newlyweds are basically a bad fit. My Big Fat American Gypsy Wedding Fight Mellie (the smaller of the two) hails from the groom’s side, while Diamond was the maid of honor on the bride’s side. There was no love lost to start with. The tipping point came after the ceremony, though, when Mellie began running her mouth about how the bride and groom don’t belong together. Diamond then shoved Mellie to the ground HARD … outside the church. The ladies proceeded to beat the ever-loving snot out of each other, tearing at clothing, rolling around on the ground until they were both half naked, etc. Your move, Jenelle .

Zac Efron Offers Pickup, Marriage Tips

We know Zac Efron is having sex these days. The actor accidentally proved by dropping a condom at the premiere of The Lorax last month. But what would prompt him to go from intercourse to all-out commitment? Women’s Health asked the star what makes a woman “marriage material” in its latest issue. “A sense of ambition and a sense of freedom, which is a careful mix,” The Lucky One actor said. “You have to balance those two. I haven’t exactly found it yet. Among other Q&A topics for Efron: What are his feminine qualities? Sometimes I take a while to get ready to go out. It’s not excessive, but it takes me some time to find clean clothes that match. What is his favorite pickup line? So do you like High School Musical ? I’m kidding! If the situation’s right, buy someone a drink. Think on your toes, use what’s around you, and come up with something organic and fun. How does he know a date is going well? I think when it ends up going on longer than planned… and you don’t even realize it. You don’t want it to end. What’s the best compliment he ever received? A woman called me interesting once, and it kind of blew my mind. She said, “You’re one of the most interesting people I’ve ever met,” and I was like, Wow. I’m still high on that one.

Zac Efron Reveals Best Music For Setting The Mood

‘Phil Collins,’ ‘Lucky One’ star deadpans to MTV News. By Kara Warner Zac Efron Photo: MTV News In a discussion of the finer aspects of the recently released romantic drama “The Lucky One” with stars Zac Efron and Taylor Schilling, one of the most entertaining subjects to come up revolved around prolific romance author Nicholas Sparks, author of the novel upon which the film is based . Specifically, we wondered whether Efron and Schilling had ever experienced any Sparks-like fantasy romance scenarios in real life. “I’m sure I’ve said some of those lines,” Efron admitted to MTV News. “They’re probably worse — not as good as the ones [Sparks has] written, but they were excellent in the moment.” “I’m sure they were great,” Schilling offered. “I’m sure they worked in the moment.” “I feel like they were good,” Efron said with a smile. “It’s about the right moment,” Schilling added, referring to the fact that there’s a perfect time and place for romantic gestures. “There have been a few sweeping gestures [in my life] but what means the most to me are the little things from the heart. There have been a few notes and well-timed flowers that mean more than anything else.” “Every once in a while when you look into each other’s eyes and that music starts playing, I love that,” Efron joked, which prompted us to ask a follow-up question about which song you should play when trying to set the mood. “That’s a good question. What would be your song that you would play?” Schilling asked Efron. “I have no answer.” “Phil Collins,” Efron deadpanned, which sent his co-star into a fit of giggles. “That’s great!” she said, laughing. “That’s a good blanket artist. It’s a great answer.” “I think so,” Efron said. We can just picture it now, Efron and a very lucky lady about to lock lips with Collins’ classics “In the Air Tonight” or “Against All Odds” playing in the background. ‘The Lucky One’: The Reviews Are In!

Critics find Zac Efron film to be typical Nicholas Sparks fare. By Fallon Prinzivalli Zac Efron in “The Lucky One” Photo: Warner Bros. In the film adaptation of the Nicholas Sparks novel “The Lucky One,” Zac Efron plays Logan, a Marine who returns from Iraq in search of the woman he believes was his good luck charm overseas. He finds her (Beth, played by Taylor Schilling ) and learns she runs a dog kennel with her son Ben and grandmother Ellie. Despite Beth’s reservations, Ellie hires Logan to help with the work around the kennel, and Ellie ends up warming to the soldier. Overall, critics are not impressed with the Scott Hicks-directed movie, but their reviews are mixed. Some claim that the acting is bland and the storyline is the typical “boy-meets-girl” Sparks experience, while others believe the romance is “well-constructed” given the source material. Either way, the film is sure to appeal to the author’s fans and should fare well with romance lovers at this weekend’s box office. The Story “The Sparks-styled romance has almost become its own movie genre — predictable, pure of heart, sentimental and never straying from the boy-meets-girl basics, or the surface, for that matter — and in that ‘The Lucky One’ delivers.” — Betsy Sharkey, Los Angeles Times The Romance “The central love story is well-constructed for what it is; it offers the requisite amount of fantasy with just a miniscule dollop of realism.” — James Berardinelli, Reelviews “Their love scenes, like every other element of Hicks’ film, are lighted in a way that gives everything an impossibly warm, romantic glow. You can roll your eyes, or you can give in.” — Christy Lemire, The Associated Press Zac Efron “Efron does fill out the hunky-guy uniform nicely. He’s no longer the scrawny teen from ‘High School Musical.’ But despite his promise in smaller movies like ‘Me and Orson Welles,’ here he’s all flat affect, taking bottled-up angst to an extreme where you never actually see it. He’s perfectly likable but never riveting, dropping the ball on the chance to portray the complicated psychology of a war veteran. Apart from one early scene in which he flinches at a video-game shooting, you never have the sense he’s dealing with combat repercussions.” — Sara Stewart, New York Post The Final Word “Part of the experience of a Nicholas Sparks movie is encountering revelations and reversals in the plot that challenge your sense of the preposterous. That’s how destiny works: unlikely incidents pile up [and] good intentions go awry … If realism is what you’re after, you’ll do better at ‘The Three Stooges.’ ‘The Lucky One’ is where you will find death, redemption and kisses in the rain.” — A. O. Scott,
