Michelle Obama DNC Speech: An Instant Classic

Yes, Sarah Silverman may have delivered the single line that stood out the most on Monday night at the Democratic National Convention. But Michelle Obama delivered the speech that will stand the test of time. Framing the argument for this election not around party lines, but around “who will have the power to shape our children for the next four or eight years of their lives,” Obama endorsed Hillary Clinton in the most passionate way possible. Speaking candidly about Sasha and Malia, Obama brought up the topic of bullying, a clear reference to Republican nominee Donald Trump. “We don't stoop to their level. Our motto is: 'When they go low, we go high,'” she said. Words matter, she said. Actions matter. When she and her husband moved into the White House years ago and and their 10-year old and their 7-year old went off to school with armed Secret Service agents, Obama recalled: “I saw their little faces pressed up against the window and all I could think was, 'What have we done?'”  Ever since then, she had focused primarily on making this experience into an important one for her kids. “We urge them to ignore those who question their father's citizenship or faith,” she said. “We insist that the hateful language they hear from public figures on TV does not represent the true spirit of this country.” Obama used this angle as a way to segue into why Clinton needs to be elected President. “What I admire most about Hillary is she never buckled under pressure,” the First Lady said. “Hillary Clinton has never quit on anything in her life. “When I think of the kind of president I want for my girls and all our children, that's what I want – the proven strength to persevere.” Later on, Obama talked emotionally about how the White House was built by slaves. About how her two African-American daughters now play on its lawn with their dog. And about how the Republicans spent their Convention trying to tell viewers about all the awful things now going on in the country. “Don't let anyone ever tell you that this country isn't great,” she said in a pointed reference to Trump's campaign slogan. “This, right now, is the greatest country on earth.” The speech was lauded as one of the all-time best on social media. And a certain Commander-in-Chief clearly liked it: It made you understand why someone might want to plagiarize Michelle Obama . Prepare for some waterworks, and don't be ashamed if you stand and cheer at one point, as you watch the full Michelle Obama speech from the DNC below:

You With Her? Hillary Clinton Says Ignorant Whites Need To Start Listening To African-American Concerns

Hillary Clinton Says White People Need To Listen To Black Folks’ “Legitimate Cries” The tragic killings of black men at the hands of police officers this week is no doubt going to make fodder for politicians during this election year. The presidential hopeful is taking the opportunity to put her outrage on full display as she recently spoke to white folks about getting their mind right… Via HuffingtonPost Presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton said on Friday that white people must do more to understand the experiences that African-Americans have had with police officers. Speaking with CNN’s Wolf Blitzer, Clinton made the remarks in response to questions about why she believes she’s more qualified than presumptive GOP nominee Donald Trump to close the racial divide in America. “I will call for white people, like myself, to put ourselves in the shoes of those African-American families, who fear every time their children go somewhere, who have to have the talk about … how to really protect themselves, when they are the ones who should be expecting protection from encounters with the police,” Clinton said. “I’m going to be talking to white people. I think we are the ones who have to start listening to the legitimate cries that are coming from our African-American fellow citizens, and we have so much more to be done, and we have got to get about the business of doing it,” said Clinton. “We can’t be engaging in hateful rhetoric or incitement of violence. We need to bring people together.” SOUNDS good. But are you buying what Hillary is selling? Image via WENN

Mischa Barton Apologizes for Wildly Inappropriate Instagram Post

Mischa Barton is not perfect, people. Anyone who watched her performance as Marissa Cooper on The OC is well aware of this fact. But the actress (former actress?) has taken to Instagram in order to drive this point home in the form of an apology. Barton came under major fire this week when she addressed the sad situation of Alton Sterling being shot dead by police in Louisiana. The tragic incident took place on Tuesday. Based on the video (below), it certainly appears as if Sterling had already been detained by officers and placed on the ground at the time these cops opened fire, ending his life on the spot. Take a look at the disturbing footage for yourself: Alton Sterling: New Video Emerges of Deadly Louisiana Shooting In response to the seemingly senseless death, Barton wrote the following on her social media account: I’m truly heart broken to watch videos like the #altonsterling execution. This may have been going on forever in the United States but thank god the pigs get caught on camera now. Its unthinkable and an embarrassment to America. The country I was brought up in. Somebody make change. We need gun control and unity. And a real President so think about that when this election is around the corner. The world is a precarious place right now.#stop #reflect and #act appropriately. It’s hard to take issue with any of these words, right? So, what was the problem with Barton’s post? She included the following photo along with it: Somehow, it did not occur to Barton that an image of her relaxing in a bikini on board a yacht might not be the most appropriate setting in which one ought to touch on the topic of racial injustice. After deleting the photo, yet still receiving a great deal of backlash, Barton shared the following Mea Culpa on her Instagram account today: “I’m human, I’m not perfect, and I’m sorry if my Instagram post went out of context. I didn’t mean to offend anyone.” We can’t say we’re big fans of the I’m not perfect defense, but whatever. It’s better than no apology at all, right? In the wake of Sterling’s death, along with subsequent shooting of  Philando Castile , many stars have sent messages of pain, anger and hope on social media. HERE IS WHAT BEYONCE SAID . HERE IS WHAT TYGA WROTE . HERE IS A LOOK AT DRAKE’S MESSAGE . Race Matters: Study Shows Young Black Americans Are LEAST Likely To Vote In Elections

Young Black Americans Are LEAST Likely To Vote A new study shows that young African Americans are not finding their way to the ballot box according to Washington Post : African Americans account for a larger share of Democratic primary voters this year than they did in 2008, but that is because of older black voters, not higher participation by younger black people. Across two dozen states where exit polls were conducted in 2008 and this year, black voters older than 45 grew from 12 percent of the electorate on average in 2008 to 16 percent this year. In those same states, black voters younger than 45 made up 11 percent of voters in 2008 vs. 10 percent this year. Democratic candidates and strategists have stressed the importance this year of all young voters, who heavily favored Obama in both of his election contests — and Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont in this year’s Democratic primaries. But younger Americans are the least likely to turn out in elections: The share of eligible voters ages 18 to 29 who cast ballots fell from a record high of 48 percent in 2008 to 41 percent in the 2012 presidential election, according to the U.S. Elections Project. Fredrick Harris, a political science professor and director of the Institute for Research in African American Studies at Columbia University, said the success of the Black Lives Matter movement should not be measured only by voter turnout or candidate preference. It has succeeded at doing what no other black leaders have done, especially those who have lined up to endorse either Sanders or Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton. “Voting is definitely one way, and I wouldn’t insult my ancestors by telling people they shouldn’t vote, but there are other ways of reimagining and restructuring the world, and that lies in organizing our communities,” said Ashley Williams, a 23-year-old activist who attends the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Discuss.

Sister Wives Catfish Scandal: "Lover" Pens Tell-All

Meri Brown’s sticky wicket of an affair is getting worse. The Sister Wives  star and Kody Brown’s ex-wife was involved in a catfish debacle, where she thought she was falling in love with a man on the interwebs. In reality it was Oklahoma whack job Jackie Overton, who has just announced plans to write a 200-page book about the relationship, aptly titled Almost Meri’ed . According to Radar Online , Overton bills the tell-all as a “love story,” filled with “photos, more text snippets and lots of things” that she’s never “told anyone about the affair.” The $6 book, which Overton says will be published before Christmas, “is funny in some parts: it’s very humbling” and promises a “huge twist and surprise ending.” When they first met, Overton pretended to be a man named “Sam” and managed to make Meri fall for her. There are recordings of Meri telling “Sam” that he was “kinder and sweeter” than Kody. A source told In Touch that news of the book “could be really embarrassing for her.” Could be? “They could have had phone sex!” the source said. “It’s so scary for her that the book is being written,” “This is just humiliating for Meri to be so intimate with someone who’s really, for all intents and purposes, a very scary woman from Oklahoma.” Meri admitted to the affair on a TLC special, citing her daughter leaving for college and estrangement from Kody as the reasons for seeking out a relationship. “Meri just wants to move past this already, but she may be paying the price for her actions for a long time to come,” the source added. When the scandal unfolded, Meri released a statement to In Touch :  “During an emotional and vulnerable time earlier this year, I began speaking with someone online who turned out not to be who they said they were. “I never met this person and I regret being drawn into the situation, but I hope because of it I can help others who find themselves in similar circumstances. “Throughout this whole ordeal, my family has supported and stood by me.I am grateful to them for their love and strength through this difficult time.”
