Canada’s Cannabis Car

Enter the Kestrel. Designed and engineered by Motive Industries, a Canadian firm based in Alberta, the fully electric car features a body shell made of hemp–which may be better known as Cannabis Sativa L. The hemp for the Kestrel's body is grown by Alberta Innovates Technology Futures (AITF) under license from the Canadian government. Unlike the cannabis Californians may find available at their local medical marijuana dispensaries, hemp grown by AITF ends up on a production line, where it is turned into a composite material that has the impact resistance of fiberglass. But unlike fiberglass, the hemp bio-composite is cheaper to produce and has fewer health risks connected with its manufacture. It is also significantly lighter than glass-based composites traditionally used in racing cars. http://www.foxnews.com/leisure/2010/08/24/canadian-cannabis-car/ added by: JackHerer

Nissan Diverts 2/3 of Electric LEAFs from U.S. to Japan

Photo: Nissan Only 3,300 LEAFs in U.S. Until March 2011 One of the things that makes the Nissan LEAF electric car so promising is that Nissan was aiming for mass-production from the very beginning (f.ex. The Smyrna plant is expected to produce up to 150,000 vehicles annually, and there are other high-capacity Nissan EV plants in Oppama, Japan and Sunderland, England). Other car makers are no doubt thinking about big numbers for their upcoming EVs, but so far they’ve been more timid… In any case, it looks like would-be buyers of the LEAF in the United States will have to be patient,… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Astonishing Transformer Furniture (Video)

Transformer furniture holds a lot of great promise: multi-function furnishings that really do multiple things well, thereby saving space and resources. But I’d wager that most of the designs we see do more to tingle the imagination than offer true practical utility. This questionable punching bag/love seat (from the same mind as the ping pong door ) is a good example. As Rain Noe at Core77 observes, “…much of … Read the full story on TreeHugger

Renault Unveils DeZir 100% Electric Concept Supercar

Photo: Renault Zero to 60 in About 5 Seconds Concept cars can be annoying. The bad ones are a waste of time, and the good ones don’t always go into production, which is frustrating. But they’re still useful because they show us what engineers and designers are working on, and they give us clues about the future direction of car companies. This is why Renault’s DeZir electric concept car is interesting (DeZir is close to the French “désir”, which translates to “desire”), especially when taken along with Renault’s more practical

Dispatch from the Gulf Oil Spill: Why We Are All Responsible for the Cleanup

Photo courtesy of Philippe Cousteau We made it into Tampa late last night and took the one hour drive to the beach near St. Petersburg. It was going to be another long day and we were prepared to get up early and get to the beach for the cleanup. I had come here in partnership with the Ocean Conservancy, one of the leading ocean conservation organizations in the country. The whole idea was to organize a beach cleanup as a way to channel the collective sense of frustration and demonstrate that people can take action to help the oceans…with or without oil. … Read the full story on TreeHugger
