Madonna Kicks Off MDNA Tour Wrapped In Israeli Flag

Singer totes rifle, dances with monks and dresses up as marching band conductor during high-energy Tel Aviv concert on Thursday. By Gil Kaufman Madonna in her MDNA tour in Tel Aviv, Israel Photo: Getty Images Leave it to the queen of contradiction, Madonna , to kick off her world tour
in support of MDNA in Tel Aviv, Israel, on Thursday night by making a plea for peace in the Middle East during a show in which she brandished a machine gun and a revolver. Performing in front of 32,000 fans at a sold-out Ramat Gan Stadium, Madonna dubbed the show a “Concert for Peace” and handed out hundreds of tickets to Israeli peace activists, according to Israeli newspaper Ha’Aretz . The night was full of the usual mix of controversial images, bare-chested, buff male dancers and multiple high-fashion costume changes from the 53-year-old pop icon. Madonna opened the concert amid images of both crosses and satanic symbols as she took the stage to perform “Girl Gone Wild,” by breaking through the glass window of a confessional using a rifle, according to an Associated Press report. Wearing a black, skintight outfit, she performed the song accompanied by a troupe of dancers dressed as monks. She followed with “Gang Bang,” during which the huge onstage screens filled with blood stains and she brandished the firearms while wrestling with armed intruders. Another song, “Revolver,” had Madonna swinging around a Kalashnikov rifle as her dancers spun around holding Uzi machine guns. Making good on her rehearsed shout-out/dis
of Lady Gaga , “Express Yourself” bled into a bit of Mother Monster’s “Born This Way,” ending with the repeated refrain, “she’s not me.” For that song and the first MDNA single, “Give Me All Your Luvin’,” she was dressed as a marching band conductor and was surrounded by similarly dressed cheerleaders and drum majors. The show also featured several appearance by Madonna’s 11-year-old son, Rocco, who wore a monk’s robe and shiny blue t-shirt and orange headphones as he danced along to mum’s tunes. Madonna is not Jewish, but is a devotee of the Jewish mystical practice of Kabbalah, and the AP reported that at one point in the show she wrapped herself in an Israeli flag and called Israel the “energy center of the world.” According to Ha’Aretz , she also took an opportunity to address the audience about the prospects of long-elusive peace in the Middle East. “You can’t be a fan of mine and not want peace in the world,” she said during the two-hour show at the start of her most extensive world tour ever. “We all bleed the same color. If we can all rise above our egos and our titles and the names of our countries and our religions, and treat everyone around us with dignity and respect, then we are on the road to peace. If there is peace here in the Middle East, there can be peace in the whole world.” Related Artists Madonna

Pete Rock Wanted To Assist Lupe Fiasco On ‘T.R.O.Y.’ Remake

‘I want to give you that same impact that I had when I put that record out,’ Pete Rock says about ‘Around My Way (Freedom Ain’t Free).’ By Rob Markman, with reporting by Sway Calloway Pete Rock Photo: MTV News Pete Rock and CL Smooth ‘s “They Reminisce Over You (T.R.O.Y.)” is an iconic, classic and unforgettable track that hip-hop fans across the world hold near and dear. But as special as the 1992 track is to the listener, it means even more to the creator, who originally made the track in dedication to his fallen friend Troy “Trouble T Roy” Dixon. So when producer Pete Rock first heard Lupe Fiasco ‘s remake, “Around My Way (Freedom Ain’t Free),” on the radio last week, he was quite upset. “At that point, my emotions were working — I’m still thinking about Heavy D and Troy is a dear friend to me, and my emotions got the best of me, and I expressed myself on Twitter,” Pete Rock told MTV News correspondent Sway Calloway on Tuesday, a week after Lupe released his single. Dixon, a former member of the hip-hop group Heavy D & the Boyz, passed away in 1990 after an accidental fall while he was out on tour. Two years later, Pete Rock and his partner CL Smooth released “T.R.O.Y.” to pay homage. The song took on even greater meaning for Rock after Heavy D, his cousin, passed away in November 2011. The Soul Brother said he was approached by Lupe’s label and management to use his classic beat for their new track. Rock agreed, under the one condition: that he was involved in the recording process. “I thought from that point I would be involved with Lupe and being in the studio, tweaking the beat, but I never heard from the record label, and then I turn on the radio, and hear it on the radio,” Rock explained. Instead of involving Pete Rock, Lupe and his team re-created the beat from the original 1967 Tom Scott sample from which “T.R.O.Y.” was crafted. “No disrespect to lupe fiasco and i like him alot but TROY should be left alone. Feel so violated, the beat is next to my heart and was made Outta anguish and pain. When it’s like that it should not be touched by no one,” Rock tweeted after hearing the track. “I’m not flattered @ all. Dat sh– is wack, and the producer should be ashamed of his f—in self. Smh.” The two soon got on the phone, and their respective differences were thought to be solved. “I just got off da phone with lupe, we worked out our difference and we bout to get it in,” Pete tweeted May 23. “Gonna be epic and we gonna give Troy and hev the proper respect they deserve and make history.” The very next day, an irate Lupe phoned into the “Sway in the Morning” radio show and blasted Pete Rock for what he said was a premature tweet. “He wasn’t supposed to say that,” Lupe said in response to Pete’s tweet about plans to collaborate, which has now been deleted from his account. “He was supposed to say the same sh– he said on the phone: ‘Yo, man, it was my bad, that was wack, it was f—ed up for me to say that, it was disrespectful, I was 100 percent in the wrong, I apologize.’ That’s what he was supposed to say.” The two artists clearly have different views, but Pete contends that his aim was to make peace. “When he called, he was upset, and I just tried to talk him through that and say, ‘Look, man, at the end of the day, let’s just fix this thing,’ ” Rock explained to MTV News. “My whole goal was to just squash this thing, fix the music and just move on.” Pete said he’s still a Fiasco fan — naming “Paris, Tokyo” and “Kick, Push” as two of his favorite songs — but he also stands by his original condition: If anyone is to remake “T.R.O.Y.,” he wants to be involved. “If you’re using my track, I want to give you that same impact that I had when I put that record out,” he said. “They Reminisce Over You” has already been redone several times — on mixtapes as well as commercially released albums. Rock said he can’t control the unauthorized mixtape versions, but he would like to be a part of all official remakes, as he was on Mary J. Blige’s 1993 What’s the 411? Remix album. “The Mary J. Blige remix was dope because she involved us and she put CL Smooth on her remix,” he said. What do you think about Lupe Fiasco’s “Around My Way (Freedom Ain’t Free)”? Sound off below! Johnny Depp Vs. Rooney Mara: Movie Awards Transformers

Michelle Williams, Elizabeth Banks and Colin Farrell also up for Best On-Screen Transformation at Sunday’s show. By Josh Wigler Johnny Depp in “Dark Shadows” Photo: Warner Bros. On-screen transformations aren’t purely dominated by Autobots and Decepticons. Actors can undergo their own forms of cinematic overhauls too, from makeup-heavy makeovers to complete 180-degree turns against type to — as the case may be — shocking returns to one’s original form. All of these and more are represented in the Best On-Screen Transformation category at the 2012 MTV Movie Awards . This year’s nominees include the twice-nominated Colin Farrell for his dirtbaggy turn in “Horrible Bosses” and “Hunger Games” favorite Elizabeth Banks’ perfectly pink metamorphosis as the irrepressible Effie Trinket, among others. There’s no shortage of worthy candidates for the Best On-Screen Transformation award, but which nominee will walk away feasting on Golden Popcorn? You can make that choice for yourself by voting over at MovieAwards.MTV.com — but first, let’s re-examine each of the nominees, shall we? Colin Farrell, “Horrible Bosses” The Irish actor is the epitome of the leading man: dark-haired, dark-eyed, smoky-voiced, with an enormous list of credits to his name including “S.W.A.T.” and his Golden Globe-winning turn in “In Bruges.” None of those qualities are on display in Farrell’s “Horrible Bosses” performance as coke fiend Bobby Pellitt, a balding, overweight son of a you-know-what. His physical transformation is as shocking as Tom Cruise’s Les Grossman of “Tropic Thunder” fame. It’s no less award-worthy, either. Elizabeth Banks, “The Hunger Games” Banks was a huge “Hunger Games” fan well before the movie ever got into motion, and her adoration for the world of Panem shines brightly through her performance as the bubbly Effie. It’s no easy task trying to recognize the “Zack and Miri” actress beneath the layers upon layers of pink-and-pale powder, but trust us, she’s there — and she’ll be there for many years to come, thanks to the huge success of the first “Hunger Games” film. Johnny Depp, “21 Jump Street” We did it, guys! No, seriously, we did — MTV News long championed for a Depp cameo in Jonah Hill’s “21 Jump Street,” and the “Pirates of the Caribbean” star delivered with flying colors. Aside from the fact that Depp is virtually unrecognizable in the role, it’s the hilarious and astonishing way that his part plays out that proves just how much of a transformation this “Jump Street” throwback really was for the Oscar-nominated actor. Michelle Williams, “My Week With Marilyn” As Jamie Foxx and Philip Seymour Hoffman will happily tell you, getting under the skin of real-life historical figures is a great way to win yourself an Oscar. That tactic didn’t work for Williams at this year’s Academy Awards, but it could very easily lead to a Golden Popcorn trophy at the Movie Awards on Sunday. Williams is virtually unrecognizable as Monroe, slipping into the iconic entertainer’s tragic life with ease. Rooney Mara, “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” If I were a betting man, I’d put money on Mara taking home the Best On-Screen Transformation award. Seriously, did any of these other candidates get their no-no parts pierced for their roles? I didn’t think so! Beyond the long-term physical adjustments she made to her own body, Mara embraced punk-hacker Lisbeth Salander’s cold and calculating personality wholeheartedly, convincing us beyond a shadow of a doubt that she truly was the girl who played with fire. ‘Hunger Games’ At The Movie Awards: Dos And Don’ts

In this week’s Hobnobbing, we offer advice for the franchise’s first outing at the big show! By Amy Wilkinson Jennifer Lawrence in “Hunger Games” Photo: Lionsgate Come June 3, “The Hunger Games” will enter a brand-new arena: the 2012 MTV Movie Awards . And this is one fiery debut for the film franchise, with eight nominations , including Movie of the Year, Best Cast, Best Female Lead (Jennifer Lawrence), Best Male Performance (Josh Hutcherson), Breakthrough Performance (Liam Hemsworth), Best On-Screen Transformation (Elizabeth Banks), Best Fight (Lawrence and Hutcherson vs. Alexander Ludgwig), and Best Kiss (Lawrence and Hutcherson). Yep, clearly the kind of credentials that would make any sponsor drool. Much like the titular death match, the Movie Awards can be a contentious battle, with franchise facing off against franchise, so preparation is key. In this week’s Hobnobbing, we’re taking on the role of mentor (step aside, Haymitch!) and offering some advice to the tributes. Here are our dos and don’ts for the big night: DO Dress to Impress Effie If there’s one place to let your fashion freak flag fly, it’s most certainly at an MTV awards show. ( Am I right, Rose McGowan ?) Of course, I’m not encouraging any tribute-tushy flashing or donning of flame-licked jumpsuits (such a fire hazard!), but this is a safe space to experiment with fanciful motifs and pieces of flair. For instance, I could see Lawrence sporting a shorter, cropped version of her red, orange and yellow interview dress, or Banks working her sky-high Effie heels. DON’T Tease Us Full disclosure: I personally think “Twilight” co-stars Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart are a lock for a fourth Best Kiss statuette, but if the odds are indeed in Lawrence and Hutcherson’s favor and they’re named victors, I respectfully ask that they give us a show. None of this we-almost-maybe-kinda-sorta-kissed business. If you need some inspiration, Jennifer and Josh, take a page out of Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams’ “Notebook.” DO Bring Your Bow and Arrow The Movie Awards have a storied history of spoofery, and while I have no insider information as to what’s in the works, Lawrence (if in attendance) would be wise to pack her trusty weapon. You never know when it will come in handy for a giggle-worthy gag! (Is this where I put in my request for Lawrence to shoot an apple off of Josh Horowitz ‘s head?) DON’T Drop Your Golden Popcorn ‘Nuff said . DO Bring News About “Catching Fire” We’re getting really hungry here, guys. Any scraps about the November 2013 release would be much appreciated. (Seriously, we’ll retrieve them from a pile of slop and devour them. We’re not proud!) Do you have any Movie Awards advice for the “Hunger Games” gang? Sound off in the comments below and tweet me @amymwilk with your thoughts and suggestions for future columns! Earlier “Hunger Games” columns :

REVIEW: What to Expect From What to Expect When You’re Expecting? A Bunch of Barren Gags

Hollywood, a humble request? I realize that abortion is has become too divisive a topic these days to drop into a mainstream movie product like  What To Expect When You’re Expecting , especially in what’s an overall innocuous ensemble comedy based, somehow, on a bestselling pregnancy guidebook (between this and  Battleship , it’s one strange week for source material). It’s also a tough topic from which to wring laughs. And in something carefully calculated to be as broad in appeal as possible, any mention of the option of terminating a pregnancy is just going to be one more thing that could isolate potential movie audiences, like an ugly poster, being in a foreign language or attempting analysis of the Iraq War. But when you have a young female character who gets pregnant, who’s not in a stable relationship and who’s in an economically tenuous position, can’t you slip in some mention of why she wouldn’t consider the A-word? Religion, personal conviction, future fertility concerns due to some inherited condition, story revealed to be actually taking place in an alternate universe in which Roe v. Wade has been overturned and women are given no choice but to have Chace Crawford’s impeccably handsome babies? Just something to save her from looking nuts, which is the case for Rosie (Anna Kendrick), a 23-year-old food truck worker (guessing that doesn’t come with health insurance) who lives with two roommates and ends up with a little surprise after a spontaneous hookup with former high school classmate and fellow foodie Marco (Crawford). Naturally, those crazy kids decide to stick it out, and things briefly bumble along in  Knocked Up -lite fashion until Rosie loses the baby. She has the misfortune of being stuck with What to Expect When You’re Expecting ‘s miscarriage storyline — the other three Atlanta-based and one Los Angeles-located couples in the Kirk Jones-directed film each shoulder a different first-time child-bearing experience, from a post-35 pregnancy (Cameron Diaz and Matthew Morrison) to twins (Dennis Quaid and Brooklyn Decker) to adoption (Jennifer Lopez and Rodrigo Santoro) to a physically taxing gestation (Elizabeth Banks and Ben Falcone). Also checked off the list are issues of whether or not to circumcise, of money, of breastfeeding, of fertility, of balancing work and of being a good father. It’s a lot to fit into one film, and some of these themes, particularly in the case of Rosie and Marco’s thread, get such short shrift that Jones might have done better to leave them by the wayside — it’s hard to have a serious contemplation of post-miscarriage depression slotted in next to a gag about how pregnancy gives you cankles. It’s not impossible to make an engaging film out of an advice tome — Think Like a Man  managed to be lively and funny , because its characters emerged as more than just vehicles for its source book’s ideas. That doesn’t happen here, though the ensemble is at least notably odd in its spread of professions, which include a breast-milk advocate, an aquarium and baby photographer, the aforementioned food truckers, a NASCAR driver and the host of a  Biggest Loser- style weight-loss show. The variety seems there to make up for the fact that in other ways, the film’s showing a fairly narrow range of childbearing experiences — these are all straight, working couples in the middle- to upper-class range. It’s only in Lopez’s story that the economic crunch of preparing for a child is mentioned, and even then it’s an issue of having to keep living in a fab apartment rather than moving into an even more fab house. What to Expect When You’re Expecting  centers on the belief that having children is the only way to know real fulfillment in life. “When I was young, I thought I was so happy. Now I know that I’m happy,” says Chris Rock, the leader of a weekly gathering of dads who walk around the park enjoying their no-judgment zone. This leads to moments in which the film touches on fears of feminine inadequacy that it doesn’t have the space or depth to process — Banks’s character being so sure she’d have that “glow” and instead finding herself waddling, gassy and miserable; Lopez getting drunk and crying about how she isn’t able to do “the one thing a woman is supposed to do.” The cheerily childless out there don’t get any screen time, not just because this is a film about having kids but because they wouldn’t fit into the overall worldview, which is that you haven’t lived until you’ve spawned, or, barring that, snagged a cute infant from Ethiopia. In the realms of pregnancy comedy,  What to Expect When You’re Expecting doesn’t find new laughs, just layers on attempts at the tried-and-true ones — think one scene in which a woman howls and makes funny faces during labor is funny? How about many of them together? Its sharpest segment is the opening, in which we see Diaz’s celebrity trainer compete on Morrison’s dance show, writhing through ridiculous choreography next to fellow contestants Whitney Port and Dwyane Wade. The film’s skewering of reality show competitions is far more surefooted than any of its celebrations of the joys of parenting, which seem, despite the specificity of the manual that inspired it, more theoretical than sincere.
